A memoir of a young boy's journey from being raised in poverty by a single mother in a small, conservative community in Virginia. Keith shares with us the injustices and trauma he suffered as a young, black, gay boy in the bible belt to help others find their voice and confidence to live the life God intended them to live.
This book was written by a friend of mine, Keith Butler, and I am honored to be adding this book to the Goodreads catalog. It's debut was last Sunday, December 12, 2021.
Although slightly biased, I heard this as if Keith was telling me this story versus just reading this. It is heartwarming, tragic and inspirational all in one. He wrote this book for the little black gay boy that might need some encouragement to be accepting of himself and live as God intended him to live, but it isn't just for little black gay boys. To know this man of integrity and dignity, and know what he went through to get there, is a lesson for all.
This a quick and flowing read. It is basically a "how to" book for little black gay boys. I do think it was meant for that audience. But through reading it, one comes to understand that surviving, coming out, and recovering through the process is not easy, and is fraught with peril. I applaud the author for surviving to be his true self and in so doing, provide guidance for a younger audience that may be facing the same situations and experiencing the same trauma.
