The New Testament Devotional Commentary, Volume 1: Matthew, Mark, and Luke
Bible commentaries are rarely so brief, and even more rarely so insightful or helpful. Bo Giertz's trilogy of New Testament commentaries read as short devotions that not only give the reader a better understanding of the factual context in which these Scriptures were written, but also how they apply to people in their everyday lives. Moving passage by passage, Giertz brings the law to bear in soul searching simplicity before preaching Christ and him crucified for the forgiveness of sins to all who have ears to hear.
This first volume covers the synoptic gospels, highlighting the unique perspective that Matthew, Mark, and Luke bring to us about the earthly life of Jesus. Each section begins with a brief introduction to the book, its author, and its place in history. The subsequent chapters each focus on a single pericope, bursting with gospel insights that will enrich the faith of the pastor and the layman alike.

I enjoy all of Giertz's writings and I am especially glad I purchased this new volume for my commentary library. Giertz explains the exegesis, theology, and spiritual applications of each synoptic gospel verse by verse. He frequently engages with higher critical interpretations of a text and explains why these conclusions err. Giertz infrequently refers to the original languages and only does so when it is important to the theological or exegetical point he is making. This commentary is very accessible to lay readers 12th grade and up. Pastors will find it helpful for Bible Study and sermon preparation.

I think it is rewarding to read commentaries from different periods of history and from different parts of the world. And if you can find one as concise and with some nice insights as this one, you've got something. I've read several of Giertz's books and have enjoyed them. Looking forward to the rest of this series over the next year or two.

This is an excellent, readable commentary for either devotional use or more studied reference. This commentary is just as accessible and useful for lay people as it is for pastors. It is a gift to have Giertz's commentary available in English.
