About the author

Jo McCall

19 books245 followers
Jo McCall writes dark, contemporary and paranormal romance with a mafia focus.

A paramedic for over ten years, Jo traded in her stethoscope for paper and pen after an injury left her unable to finish out her career.

She is an avid reader of anything dark and steamy and when she isn’t writing, you can find her making a rather large dent in her TBR.

She is a lover of strong but vulnerable heroines who find their own and hot, sexy alpha males who might be a tad bit over-possessive. Jo loves to lose herself in her characters and the flaws and darkness that surround them.

There is no shame found here, and she often gets lost when writing out those erotic, steamy scenes that make women’s (and men’s) fantasies come true.

“There is nothing like getting lost in something. you know is wrong, but still can’t resist.”

Jo currently resides in the beautiful state of Washington with her two dogs.

**I received this as an ARC**

Please make sure to check TWs before going into this book. Also make sure to read the first book of this series Shattered Pieces prior to this one.

Ok, Jo I have a bone to pick with you. That cliffy, what the heck?! This whole book was just one intense moment, and I am living for it. In this book we get answers to some of the questions that we were left with in book 1. We also learn some new information. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole story. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars.

exciting

My goodness what a way to end a book hanging by my finger nails oh my goodness this was such a great book it kept me entertained all the way through Ava what a tough cookie she is just love her and Matthias he needs a good kick up the butt to be thankful what an amazing woman he has. All the players interwoven in the storyline are fabulous Ava’s real family and the psychopath Christian. Now to read the next book hopefully to see Christian get his comeuppance.

Much like McCall's debut and book one of this series, Shattered Remnants ends in a cliffhanger. Ava has woken up elsewhere after an accident at the end of book one. Matthias has now found out that she did not betray him... At least, not the way he'd originally thought.

Ava, despite the circumstances she's thrown into, has made up her mind - she will be the queen she is meant to be in Mafia world. Both of them avoided each other like the plague even though they thought about each other and lived under the same roof.

The cliffhanger left me wanting more of their story. It was yet another striking moment of action.

Despite the fact that I enjoyed Shattered Pieces, I felt like Shattered Remnant's lacked in comparison. I found myself skimming through part of it . Matthias and Ava didn't see each other until about 50% in (maybe that's what lacked in this story: the romance). Personally, I think the story got better after the 60%. Honestly, I never thought I'd say this about a book but the sex saved it.

Shattered Remnants, the second book in Jo McCall’s Shattered World series was yet again another fabulous dark mafia read that will keep you on the edge of your seat!!! I absolutely love this dark underground world that she has created, with phenomenal characters and a storyline that keeps on going and keeps you guessing with all the suspenseful twists and turns along the way.

This story picked up right where book one left us dangling with that delicious cliffhanger—and never stopped going! Secrets are revealed and actions are discovered that set all of our characters on a course for collision and it’s epic!

Ava has grown tremendously throughout this series and I love the fierce woman she’s becoming now that she’s out from under the control of the domineering men in her life—well most anyways. ;) I absolutely loved all the growth that Ava had in this story, and seeing how far she’s come, and how she is truly a force to be reckoned with!

“You were never a lamb, my dear. You were always a wolf.”

Matthias on the other hand was definitely a character you wanted to smack upside the head a few times, just to put him in check. While some of his feelings were founded, after all, the last we saw him he was reeling from the shock of Ava’s betrayal, it still drove me crazy that he was so blind to everything around him!

And while I wish we had more of them together, there’s still plenty of hot, steamy scenes and relationship development to keep a girl happy—especially as the chemistry between Ava and Matthias is off the charts and utter fire!!! Just when you think it can’t get any better, McCall keeps it coming!

Overall this is another definite must read for any dark mafia/criminal underground romance loving fan—especially those that love hot dynamic characters and a plot with twists, turns, secrets and danger lurking at every turn. Just be sure to check your trigger a and buckle us because this is one heck of a ride full of emotions, angst and sheer unbridled passion!!! And that ending?!?! I can’t wait for more and need the next book NOW!

I want to start this off by saying that Shattered Remnants is book two in the Shattered World series, so if you haven’t read book one—please do that! And just like the first, it’s packed full of angst, drama, and action.

One of my absolute favorite things about Shattered Remnants was getting to see the growth in mindset that Ava had. She really came into her own and fully grasped the title of Queen to reflect who she is as a person. There’s nothing I love more than a strong FMC, and Ava fits the description perfectly. She’s been chained, abused, and nearly unalived—among other things. But she doesn’t let anything stop her, nor does she wait for her knight in devilish armor to save her. Ava saves herself, in a way.

Matthias. I love the man, but he infuriated me the entire book. He feels betrayed, and I fully understand why. But his reluctance to accept her side of the story—even though he’s the one that asked to hear it—made me want to punch him in the face. I felt that we didn’t get enough of them because he spent too much of the book either trying to avoid her or hate-“loving” her.

Then Queen @authorjomccall went and ended on that freaking CLIFFHANGER. Girl! How do I even handle myself right now? I hate him, then I love him, then I hate him, and then you go and pull that stunt at the end right when I start to love him again.

And that shocking twist at the end? I had a feeling—even though I didn’t want it to be true—but still gasped when it was revealed.

I devoured this book in one sitting. We get answers that developed in book 1, then we have new questions that develop in this book. I do think that this book was more plot driven and focused more on the informational aspect rather than the characters, but there’s still plenty of smut, steam, and badassery. Overall, I absolutely loved the book, and I’ll be biting my nails waiting on book 3.

Thank you to Jo for the ARC <3

Thank you so much to Jo McCall for sending me this ARC. I have been dying for this book since I finished the first one.

OMFG, this book ends on a cliff hanger, so please be aware of that but it's a damn good one!

This is Book 2 in the Shattered World Series, it's a dark Mafia romance. Ava is stronger than before and she comes back swinging in this book. She attempts to take her place as queen, after being used by pawns in the men of her world. There isn't a whole lot of spice (this is a personal preference and I'm usually greedy in that regard) but what there is, is amazing and possessive!

The only thing I felt that was lacking for me was Matthias' POV. It's a dual POV, but I wanted a little more of what Mathias was thinking because his POV's are always interesting. Ava started to feel a little bit repetitive and it came across as whiny. I get that she has been used and abused and no one listens to her but sometimes she sounds like a brat (and not in the way you want lol!)

There are more characters introduced and they were fun but also I was overwhelmed with information sometimes. The sensory details in this book are top notch and Jo really places you in the environment.

If you love alpha holes who are possessive, this is for you. I definitely recommend this series. :D

Well after book 1 ended I have been dying to read book 2 and now I have all I have to say is OMG!!! I freaking loved it.

I was hooked from the beginning, this is a story that grabs you from the off and you can’t put it down it’s that engaging. Something happens then you have to see where it leads, then something else happens so it’s a never ending cycle of fabulousness!

Ava in this story has bloomed into an even stronger women who takes no crap from anyone and has found the inner strength to get her opinions across. She has been observing things her whole life as a way to learn everything around her and it has never steered her wrong. She now needs others to understand her thoughts as it will be to their benefit.

Matthias needs to get his head out his ass 🤣 but I seriously love him and his men. Now the Irish are involved too this book is full of humor whilst dealing with dark themes.

This book is just incredible. However I am not happy with that ending 😱 just ripped my heart out and stomped on it why don’t you 🙈😂 and now I’ve got to wait till the next book to know what happened! On a serious note though I love a good cliffhanger and that was a beast!! Just amazing from start to finish!

Fantastic Continuation To Series ❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Review

This is book two and we pick up right where we were hanging from the cliffy. This book was just as amazing and infuriatingly good as the first. Though more from Ava’s side of things our irritating and overly dramatic alpha male Matthias is still present and brooding. Can’t help but fall in love with that irritating man. Still have hope he gets his head on straight and realizes what he’s got but it definitely wasn’t in this book.

This is where we get to see Ava progress and become the woman and Queen she was destined to always become by Matthias’ side and he will eventually see that for himself. While being held by Christian she is forced to protect and save herself by getting her hands bloody and realizing that it will be the only way to get things back to the way they are supposed to be and to take down the people she once called family. But she has a new family now, her true family and they have her back all the way. She also has her husbands men aiding and backing her regardless of how mad that makes her husband. She loves him and will do what she can to win him back even while sassing and nipping at him every chance she gets refusing to break for him. He refuses to accept that he loves her just as much and keeps pushing her away even when he desperately wants and needs her, but he can’t keep going this way for long.

This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, heart pounding anticipating what will happen next. As with book one this also ends on one heck of a cliffhanger that will leave you absolutely traumatized. The next book can’t come quick enough. I highly recommend this book and this series to everyone that loves alpha males and sassy FMC’s!! An absolute must read!!

Jo, Shattered Remnants is AMAZING!!!

Shattered Remnants is book #2 in the Shattered World series. Make sure to read the trigger warnings! This is a dark mafia romance.

Ava has been beaten and bruised, but she has come back stronger and wiser, ready to take her place as Queen. She is sick of getting used and abused and treated like a pawn.

Matthias doesnt want to have Ava as a weakness, but she is under his skin. He also feels betrayed by her, and doesnt know how to deal with it.

Ava gets answers about her family, all kinds of things are revealed and Ava and Matthias can't decide if they want to fight or f*ck 😂😂

So much happens in this book and that cliffhanger has me wanting to cry!! I can not wait for the next book in the Shattered World!!

Jo McCall has literally come out of the gates swinging in book two of The Shattered World Series. The plot continues from where book one left off, we are introduced to new characters and the story keeps evolving from there.

This book has everything that book one has plus more!!
Ava really starts to emerge as The Queen she is destined to be in this one.

A few of my predictions after book one were correct and I have more for book three.

So if you are looking for you next Mafia/Bratva Series absolutely 200% pick this up.

♥️ Complex Plot
🖤 Enemies To Lovers
❤️ Forced Marriage
🖤 Mafia/Bratva Action
❤️ Dysfuntional Family Drama/Dynamic
🖤 Plenty if Steamy Scenes
❤️ Well written side characters

This does end on a cliffhanger as Jo likes to torture her readers as much as her characters 😉

This does have dark themes so read the trigger warning.

Jo McCall knows just the right way to wreck me but keep me holding onto a tiny string of hope and suck me so deep into the story that I am not only yelling but I am crying with the characters. My reactions through out this entire book were all over that place. I have never made so many notes to try to put things together while reading so fast that I can get to what happens next that I had to immediately read over sections again to see if I found more.
I thought the first book was fantastic but this one brought a whole new level of amazing. This book give Ava her legs to stand on her own and you can see she is going to become the strong smart and unstoppable woman she was meant to be. That doesn't mean the world won't try to stop her, they will. I have no doubt she will become the victor in the end of all of this.
Gah, this was just such a fantastic read and I cannot wait for more.

I love the first book and I love Shattered Remnants just as much, but boy did you aim right for the feels! This book just solidifies that you, Jo, will always be a one click buy author for me regardless of what the book is. The tension in this book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I could not put it down! I devoured the book within hours. I love Matthias and Ava together. Their chemistry is amazing! There is so much more I want to comment on but I can’t without giving more details. I will now be anxiously awaiting the next book. That cliffhanger…if you know, you know.

Is there a way I can give this more than a five star rating? No? Okay, well this book is a 100/10 star rating!

This book blew me away! While it is shorter than the first it doesn’t lose the story. The ending cliffhanger though!? WHAT WAS THAT?!

While I love Matthias he made me so angry at him in this book. His dang big ego and walls guarding his heart make him so hard headed and infuriating.

Ava’s growth in this book was IMMACULATE! It was believable, well written, and empowering. She becomes a strong willed woman and while she’s still weak for Matthias she’s not dependent on him.

This book is AMAZING and I loved it! Can’t wait for more!

The Shattered World series continues with book two picking up where Shattered Pieces left off. Ava and Mathias rollercoaster ride had my stomach in knots. The twists and turns and emotional upheaval is well developed, leaving you wanting to know what happens next. The intensity and chemistry is scorching. Love the fact that Ava is growing into the strong woman I always thought she should be. Her one weak spot is still Mathias but she is her own woman now.
That cliffhanger though had me asking what the heck, why did you do that? Book three can’t come out fast enough.

Holy hell! Jo McCall has done it again. Left me hanging with Ava and Matthias in a precarious cliffhanger. The sexual tension is unbelievable in this book. Back and forth, these two can't make up their minds as to whether they want to kiss or kill each other. The truth is coming out regarding their individual pasts and it has the potential to either blow up in their faces or bring them back to being a cohesive unit. Ava has had so many questions answered as to her birth father and her true family connections while Matthias is having huge problems dealing with his feelings of betrayal. It will all come down to who is willing to give the most to finally decide the fate of their relationship. They must face their common enemy throughout it all which doesn't make matters any easier.

Shattered Remnants will leave you wanting all the answers but waiting for more. Outstanding writing, gripping intensity, phenomenal characters. This is Jo McCall at her absolute best.

Holy cow! This book is everything. Shattered Remnants is the second book in the series and ends on one heck of a cliffhanger 😳
Ava is stronger than ever, determined to stop being used as a pawn. She’s the Queen! Matthias is his alphahole self, but is dealing with betrayal. They fight and make up and fight some more. Their pasts are told, family members enter the picture and a whole lot of drama.

This series just keeps getting better. So much more unraveling, all kinds of twists, a few surprises and danger lurking. It's an addictive page turner that's executed well. I was very much surprised at how everything came together, it was not expected. Plus the ending totally caught me off. Who knew that that was how it all would end. I am looking forward to the next book and I'd recommend reading this one.

Ava is turning into a major baddy! I’m loving it! Matthias needs to get his head out of his a$$!
Ava finally gets to meet her biological father and some of her siblings and I looooove them! But there’s a snake in the grass there and I hope Ava brings the beat down on them!
There is a BIG ol cliffy that had me yelling at Jo! Smh I’m still salty about it.

Short and Sweet but that Cliffy

Thanks for the Cliffy Jo!! I fell in absolute love with this author her writing and this story with book one! Book two is short and sweet but you absolutely need it! I read books for smut but I also love and excellent plot line and Jo McCall delivers! This second book is needed in order
to get more invested in the plot lines! (It could have been longer tjough 😂) I’m literally dying for more! I wish authors could write as fast as I read!

This story is such a rollercoaster ride of emotions. We switch between them so fast that at times I feel like whiplash! But it is such an adventure.

I loved loved loved watching Ava discover herself in this book but I was disappointed with Mathias this book. I feel he took a nose dive in this book and I’m mad at him.

I really can’t wait for book three in this series!

Please Ma'am can I have some more?
I love getting more of Ava this book. Seeing her connecting with family she didn't know about and learning who she is. Of course I love her and Matthias but seeing her grow is perfection.
That cliffhanger was cruel but I loved it.

This book just got even better than the last. Full of deceptions, mystery, and hot steamy hate scenes. You learn so much more about the characters and how everything fits together. Plenty of surprises still to be had and I need more now! Ends on a cliffhanger, but it leaves you wanting more.

Gripping story, still thinking Matthias needs a good spanking, well you know what I mean, he can't see what's in front of him and so I despair as Ava fights with everything she has. First class all the way with a dodgy of a cliffhanger. I voluntarily reviewed this book.

I am absolutely obsessed with mafia stories and this was a good one! After the cliffhanger in Book 1 and then another one in Book 2 - I am unsure how much more my heart can take! iWith that being said - Ava and Mathias were absolute gold! I loved reading more about these two and I loved that this book highlighted a strong and confident woman! Ava is an absolute Queen and Matthias is her supporting King. I loved that this book highlights a strong woman - because as we know behind every strong man is an even stronger woman! Bring on Book 3!!

CRAZIER THAN ANY SOAP OPERA PLOT!!!!

This book turned out to be so much more than I ever expected! It was insane with twists, turns and plot surprises. Pretty much covers all the craziest soap opera plots of all time, and then some….(I’d wanted to give examples but there’s no way to do it without spoilers, sorry!).

I was a bit thrown at the way the books are labeled- yes, they’re part of a multi-book series but they are NOT STAND-ALONE!!! Cliffhangers everywhere! The first 4 books all follow 1 main couple and even the last (4th) book ends with a gazillion unanswered questions and cliffhangers for various characters. So beware, especially since the series isn’t even close to completion (I would have waited until more books were out before starting the series).

I’m a little torn on my ⭐️ rating just because there were TOO MANY plot-lines and story twists… it made it a little hard to follow/ keep up. While editing wasn’t a huge problem, it made the plot harder to follow when there was mistaken misnamed characters and relationships (grandmother vs great-grandmother, yeah it matters so pay attention!). They mention the multi-headed hydra in this book and it’s exactly how I felt about so many different plot-lines: solve one mystery and end up with 2 new, even crazier plot-lines to follow. It was complex and mostly over-the-top ridiculously unbelievable plot shockers (lots of not-as-dead as we thought characters, baby-swapping, one step below cloning type crazy). Pretty much every character finds out their entire life and family dynamic are a lie. Not to mention that the huge number of “sell-your-child-into-slavery/ kill-your-own-child” level of terrible parents, will have you questioning how many psychopaths there actually are in the world.

At one point I just gave up trying to follow all the different “who the bad-guys are” and “who is related to who” despite the family tree charts (thank you to the author for that!!!). I was still emotionally invested in these characters and would definitely grab the rest of the series if it was out now!

One last warning: there are alot of TW, and I didn’t see them listed anywhere so just be for-warned. Pretty much if you have ANY, they are probably in this book.
