This was a 5 star novel, maybe more. George Calinescu was one of the most important authors in the Romanian space between the wars. "Bietul Ioanide" describes abundantly the society and the atmosphere of the years before the WWII. The story evolves around a group of friends and acquaintances and their small or big dramas. Politically the story focuses on the legionary movement that followed the lines of the nazi Germany and gained Romanian sympathizers especially in the young generation.

The dialogue is rich and powerful. Although the writing is very fluid and easy to read, G.C. uses plenty of neologisms (some of them I had to look up) but they don't bother (he is not showing off, he is just playing with words). That the author did a lot of research work for the book, and he managed to write quite convincingly about architecture or medicine (medicine i know and it was perfectly introduced - not too many details, but also not too little).

G.C. is a master of writing - he combines character description with story telling and he somehow knows when to stop and turn to dialogue, not to bore the reader. He is good in writing political thriller, murder investigation, philosophical insights. His characters are not out of the ordinary, they are normal people and their special traits (the accurate character study is overwhelming, the way different gestures are studied or different actions are discussed; not to mention the various perspectives he uses to characterize them).
The author offers us political stuff, society gossip, humor, family bonds, death in different forms (natural death, suicide, execution of death penalty), love triangles.

What I liked most, was the fact that the story unfolds slowly. G.C. takes his time. He doesn't rush things. His characters open themselves throughout the whole book, their actions speak sometimes for themselves. Even if the title forces us mentally to concentrate on Ioanide, there are a lot of parallel worthy stories (Pomponescu's life, Gonzalv's, Tudorel's, Ermina's).

I will add some quotes in a short time.

"Bietul Ioanide" is far more appealing and interesting than CAlinescu other work,it is more mature and enables a realistic vision concerning the romanian high society before the second world war.Inspired by Balzac,Calinescu performs a deep analysis of human behaviour, gathering people from all social media and observing their thoughts, gestures and actions with respect to a certain troubled time:1939,the soon invasion of the Germans, the rise of the "Legionary Movement"

Bietul Ioanide by George Calinescu author of Cartea Nuntii http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/12/c...

9 out of 10

This is a note about a book read some forty, maybe forty five years ago – though the added five might just serve as a hyperbole – which has had an impact, back in the communist days, but it might just disappoint, if taken again today, especially given the controversial status of the author, a brilliant intellectual

George Calinescu was in some ways a Renaissance man, with an incredible mind, knowledge, determination, talent, drive, resilience, but who was also a collaborator of the communist regime – indeed, Bietul Ioanide is probably modeled on the writer (this is a general rule otherwise) and embraces that awful doctrine

Given the stature of the intellectual, his siding with the abhorrent new rulers of this unlucky country would have an effect, however small, we could not quantify and say that without him, the soviets would have lost their push into Romania, but the support of this luminary, others like Sadoveanu shared their prestige with the bastards

We have been incredible lucky in high school, when we have been gifted with a luminous, brave, divine professor of literature, Magister Ludi Anton Chevorchian, who shared with his pupils his love of books, the secrets of great literature – many of the masterpieces have a crime plot – and quite a few anecdotes

One concerned George Calinescu, who was prominent and scary, and talked with an alternation between high pitch and grave tones, at one point, he talked about the national poet, Mihai Eminescu, stating that ‘Eminescu will remain in our conscience without equal’, when an official opened the door

It was an amphitheater, and the students were in awe, the visitor wanted to retreat presto, in a flash, but the magisterial, domineering writer, professor, political leader had asked a question in class, and when he saw that the apparatchik (maybe he was one) has beaten such a hasty retreat, he shouted ‘he does not know’

Anyway, the humor of that anecdote lies in the telling, and the amusing way that Calinescu talked, high, then very low…gifted as he was, it is a pity that he joined the ranks of the commies, however impossible it was to oppose them – we have had partisans, some heroes fighting in the mountains for some time nevertheless…

Bietul Ioanide is a great architect that might embrace the new ideology, eventually, although this is not one of the simple, idiotic works that were published as cheap propaganda, the roman has been even called similar to the Balzac works http://realini.blogspot.com/2020/06/u...

We could even speculate and say that the many characters that are present in the narrative would serve a subversive purpose, I remember I was enthused, captivated by the many former aristocrats, rich people of the ancient regime, trying hard to adapt, selling their fare, clothes, art, at the fair, where they all meet

They have a charm, erudition, style, and however ridiculous they are sometimes made to be, so that the censors would see that they are ‘exposed, criticized’, they are fantastic and I remember how much I liked them, sided with them, and loathed whatever communist sympathy was introduced, it is a question of bias

When first reading John Steinbeck, or watching the memorable Grapes of Wrath http://realini.blogspot.com/2016/08/t... the feeling was one of admiration, only once I have found about the political sympathies of the author, the second encounter was not so glorious…

Even quite a number of details connected with architect Ioanide have stayed with me, such as the fact that once the signs of aging have started to appear, he would shave his head, he had a turtle which he called…Seneca, he was superior, erudite, handsome, a lady’s men, however politically incorrect that is today

He strikes a friendship with a communist, and alas, the hero is won over by the ‘many attractions’ of that god damn disgusting doctrine – I know about it first hand, we suffered through it, and as I boast at the end, I took part in the revolution that took out Ceausescu in 1989, and got mentioned in Newsweek, then started working for some newspaper, Radio Sweden, got a push into the American Embassy, then on to do work for AT&T (which abused me, by the way, and if you read this, and know a good lawyer, a way to get them to compensate, let me know) and finally, write lines about forgotten books

Ioanide would be a role model, in that he creates, has many qualities, wins people over, but looking back, his eventual fall into the hands of the brutes is unpardonable now, back in the adolescent days, the excuse was that there was no other way, he would see the book published otherwise, but I still wonder

The truth about that terrible age, and the whole communist system is exposed by George Orwell in his stupendous Animal Farm http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/01/a... ‘all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others’, and Nineteen Eighty Four, Big Brother, double speak, idolatry, tyranny were all part of our lives, and Ioanide somehow promoted that…what a shame!

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/u... – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se

As for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/r...

Some favorite quotes from To The Heritage and other works

‘Fiction is infinitely preferable to real life...As long as you avoid the books of Kafka or Beckett, the everlasting plot of fiction has fewer futile experiences than the careless plot of reality...Fiction's people are fuller, deeper, cleverer, more moving than those in real life…Its actions are more intricate, illuminating, noble, profound…There are many more dramas, climaxes, romantic fulfillment, twists, turns, gratified resolutions…Unlike reality, all of this you can experience without leaving the house or even getting out of bed…What's more, books are a form of intelligent human greatness, as stories are a higher order of sense…As random life is to destiny, so stories are to great authors, who provided us with some of the highest pleasures and the most wonderful mystifications we can find…Few stories are greater than Anna Karenina, that wise epic by an often foolish author…’

‚parturiunt montes, nascetur ridiculus mus’

“From Monty Python - The Meaning of Life...Well, it's nothing very special...Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.”

i loved reading this book from a zoopoetic perspective (Ștolț, Ioanide's dog - there are some delicious passages)
i didn't love how women blatantly refused to acknowledge that they were cheated on; one of them even went on to defend her husband when there were obvious signs of cheating. i just don't like that in the books that i'm reading
but overall it's a pretty nice book!

M-a plictisit... Nu a reușit să mă țină în poveste așa că am abandonat-o... Poate am citit-o la timpul nepotrivit.
