I've re-read all of the 38 volume of akayona in one week. And what can I say except that I cherish all of them, all of the characters are really precious to me
I can't wait to see where the story will go next

Oh man this was so hard to read but also I loved it? The war is just so hard to watch happen but I also love how real the mangaka makes it even in its horror? Like I like how she doesn’t sugarcoat the violence or show war as a good thing we should think is fun which, for example, is a problem I had with Spy x Family Volume 8 (where I DNFed the series) with how “funny” the violence Yor was dishing out was portrayed, which is the exact opposite in Yona that I appreciate and love even though it’s super hard to read. Not to mention the hard choices Yona has to make in the battle itself just adds to the horror and terribleness of if all.

Speaking of choices, I’m pretty sure I called Su-Won a moron at least five times in reading this volume. Or was it six? Dunno I lost count, lol. Regardless he deserved all of them because OH MY GOODNESS WHAT WERE YOU THINKING DUDE?!?!?!? Like whaaattt????? It’s almost like his cruel side finally won out to the point where even Keishuk (who I also don’t like) was like “you idiot!” And then Su-Won FINALLY made a mental choice he should have made AGES ago and I was just like, “dude you’re too late on that though at least you finally realize the error of your messed up childhood leading into terrible life choices as an adult!” At least he finally admitted to it (can’t say more because spoilers) though I gotta say I still don’t like him, lol.

And just to jump off Su-Won and his choices here, but I think the greatest strength Yona (and also Hak) has that Su-Won doesn’t is compassion, and I truly believe it’s their compassion and care for everyone in the kingdom that really has the people loving and admiring them so much. Not to mention I would argue that’s what makes Yona more qualified to rule and lead BECAUSE she has so much compassion and love for her people and truly strives to do the right thing for them which then gains loyalty beyond just gaining it because you’re the king and made some things better but never won the people over on a deeper level. Yona’s compassion makes her strong despite others’ doubts, and I love that message.

And YONA IS A TOTAL QUEEN!!!!! I admire and love her so so much especially in just HOW FAR she has come and grown from the very beginning, and I’m so proud of her!!!! And the dragons are amazing as always though I do hope they’re okay… 😬 And Hak is awesome!!!! I’d love to say more but that would all be major spoilers so I will refrain, lol. Just know he’s awesome and I don’t know how he’s going to get out of the sticky situation we left him in and am SOOO nervous about how things are going to turn out there!

Another fantastic and intense volume I had so much fun buddy reading with my friend Laura! Volume 39 can’t come soon enough!

‼️Content‼️

Language: hell (as a place); what the hell

Violence: a man’s almost buried in a mass grave; an arrow strikes someone’s hand; war violence and fighting with weapons and hand to hand (nothing over PG-13); injuries and blood (nothing over PG-13); POWs are used as boulders on catapults to be thrown at the opposing side; a character’s stabbed through the chest and held aloft in a spear (rated R); a threat to cut the fingers off a child and woman for supposed stealing (nothing happens)

¿Pueden, POR FAVOR, volver a reunirse Yona y Hak de una santa vez? Me gusta la parte política/bélica, pero no es mi parte favorita ni mucho menos y estamos teniendo demasiado de eso🥲

Please no one come after me with my four star-rating because anytime the war is heavy and we see Zeno have to use his ability (or be forced into it), it always wrecks my heart! *laugh cries*

LOTS of conflicting emotions on this one and just going to do a bullet-point review because I think it's easier this way. LOL!

- First time I can say I felt a DEEPY loathing for Su-won and if it hadn't been for one phrase he internally thought, I would have echoed the words my friend said of throw that man out the window. ;p
- THANK YOU MANGAKA!! *relieved sobs*
- Yona honestly slays. I am once again at a loss of her strength and how she can show kindness in what has to be one of the hardest positions for her personally.
- My boy Sinha shined for a few pages and internally happy cried. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!! *sobs*
- When Jaeha and Gija both said they hated war, I felt their words on a deep level.
- Loved seeing those two fight together and how they have each other's back. <3
- GEUN-TAE! *ugly sobs*
- I'm glad Yun is somewhere safe...
- Lots of fantastically drawn action!

And that probably wraps it up for my spoiler-free thoughts!

With how intense things are getting, I'm definitely thinking of waiting to let some volumes stack up again because I appreciated reading volumes 37 and 38 that way (and highly highly HIGHLY recommend you read these back-to-back! I repeat, do NOT start volume 37 without 38!). Granted, I already saw the longgg wait in between releases, but with how the events unfolded with these two volumes, it was VERY much worth the wait.

But man, that's going to be a wait when I have loved being with these characters again…*cries*

...I can't discard them.

I screamed inside my head when I read that line. Even though I know it's a complicated and dysfunctional friendship, many of my favorite scenes from this series involved Yona, Hak, and Soo-Won saving each other. This trio just keeps breaking my heart and putting the pieces back together. Please stop doing the former, guys. Haven't we suffered enough already?! More importantly, Kouka needs all 3 of you.

Yona and Hak, once again, you made me cheer proudly. You two are NOT too soft-hearted to be rulers. On the contrary, the world would be a kinder and brighter place if it has more leaders like you.

Lastly, the art in this volume was amazing! The characters' faces were so expressive! I really felt their intense emotions!

“[Why would you help an enemy?] I just don’t want to go out of my way to kill a living person.”

And so, war, in all its ugliness, has broken out.

I have so many mixed feelings about this volume it's not even funny.

For one, I really liked the way that some of the themes of the story come together a little bit more now. It truly feels like the story is starting its final charge and it could come to a head soon enough, that most of the work has been done to explain all these ideas and now they just need to be put together. And Hak being the one to witness such a moment was quite meaningful.

On the other hand, we have the development of the war and Soo-won's character, and how one affects the other. I've not had rest about Soo-won's character from the very beginning and right now is no different, except for the fact that I'm leaning towards distaste more than ever.

While I appreciate the complexity and the dimension given to his character, there is a fine line between complexity, grayness, and just simple disinterest that just put me off quite fast.

That being said, the story has a history of making my blatant distaste and anger turn more mellow and slightly understanding as the characters develop and grow themselves, so I know that my opinions are not fixed in stone just yet.

Lastly, the element of war is depicted as horridly as it deserves and it chills my bones every time a battle of this scale happens, as they are never pretty, simple affairs in this story.

“The great unifiers. Princess Yona and the Four Dragons now symbolize the kingdom.”

4.25 stars i am not usually one to enjoy action/war scenes, esp in manga bc it's hard to tell what's going on, but this volume was so engaging and tense and kept me on the edge of my seat!! and wow this volume had a GREAT ending

Yona siempre se merece cinco estrellas, especialmente si está en la portada. La verdad, creo que el pacing mejoró mucho (que ya era bueno) y la manera en la Kusanagi explora los sentimientos de Yona es top de top.

Action packed because we’re full on in the war now. Hak remains stranded on enemy territory, healing from his injuries (thank god for that woman who stepped in and saved him) while Yona’s character growth continues. I like to her taking charge. I wonder if Soo-Won will die, though. He’s getting weaker and weaker, and he’s having more interesting realizations. Character redemption incoming? Seems like a good time as any to kill him off, right? I don’t want that but I’m afraid of the writers. Most writers love that kind of stuff.

The political machinations happening while in the middle of a huge battle while also having massive emotional complexity amongst many characters...this continues to be TOP TIER.

Hak got swept away in a flood and might be dead (but likely not, considering he's finally the primary love interest for Yona) and the Kai Empire is at war with Kohka (because of reasons) so off to battle we go even though Su-Won isn't in good health (because his potential cure got swept away with Hak).

But, concern for Hak aside, the real worry is for the Dragons and the Wind Tribe (and the other soldiers too, I guess) because Kai fights dirty.

I finished this a while ago but forgot to mark it as read. I'm pretty sure I enjoyed this volume but just not as much as the others since I haven't bothered to catch up with the newer chapters online and didn't bother to preorder this after reading it. Still a good series but it does have its faults and makes me so frustrated at times, but that's pretty much the whole shojo genre in general.
