This novel has the exact same problems as another novel written by the same author called “Card Room:”
1. There are too many characters, so they author only really focused on the main two, and the rest were just used as comic relief. Even the side couple in Card Room had more screen time than the one here. Like Card Room, there was an already established straight couple, but the author once again completely neglected them and their wedding was once again not shown. Why author, just because this is danmei? Zhang Xiaonian, Qin Miao and Lan Yarong especially had no presence (unless they were doing their respective subjects' exams) and most of the side cast in general just felt flat.
2. Some of the subject exam had loopholes, for example, that one maths mystery exam with that killer. Of course MC had an absurd assumption and of course it was right, even though there was hardly any evidence to point to that conclusion. Also I completely blanked out in the maths prime numbers maze and that engineering staircase puzzle but that might just be a me issue lol
Overall though, I did enjoy this. I still prefer Card Room over this, but if I read Card Room now, I definitely wouldn't give it such a high rating. I can't be bothered changing my review of it now though, haha.
Also one thing that triggered me: 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲: . . . . . . . . . . . . In the last leg of the novel... WHAT THE ROYAL FUCK XIN YAN
I've been shipping you with Ke Shaobin since the first sentence you appeared in and then YOU GO AND SEXUALLY ASSAULT HIM?? Why can't danmei author's just write a romance without sexual assault or rape wtf😭
You go into his room in the middle of night and kiss him? And start inappropriately touching him?? And then you act pitiful like a victim so he feels bad for you??? Just so he ends up with you???? That's SA and manipulation wtf I was rooting for you but you're such a red flag😭😭😭
I can excuse this behaviour because this is a work of fiction that's not meant to be taken seriously, but if this happens irl... RUN DON'T WALK🏃🏃🏃
i've read card room from the same author before and loved it so i found this novel with the same genre to read next. if i had to summarise it, this is like a college version of card room with low stakes and no external antagonists.
the main character is super smart in his field of study and is a great leader of his group since he's good at seeing the big picture, while the love interest is also super smart in his field of study and notices more of the smaller details. it's a grumpy x sunshine trope where the mc is v outgoing and friendly while the ml is more reserved and only gentle with the mc.
i really liked the premise of having to take different major courses to escape from the library, i think it's quite creative, and the skills each character gains is also related to their own field of study. the romance between the main couple is also v sweet, although it's slowburn.
there's also a side couple with their own story in the extras. they're also grumpy x sunshine, but also different in the way that the gong's feelings are darker and more obsessive as compared to the main couple. in the side story, he did something questionable to the shou but he also really does love and care for him, so they still had a happy ending together which i can accept.
either way, i personally really enjoyed it since i binge-read this novel within 4 days.
One of the best slowburn romances I've read in a while. The little moments and pre-established friendship make the payoff of them getting together amazing between all the chaos of the different classes. Not particularly scary or horror based for all that it is technically unlimited flow, but the various "courses" they take are pretty unique. I really preferred the reasoning and deduction based ones. Not sure how well it will hold up on a reread considering I know all the tricks and endings now which made up for most of my enjoyment, but it was a solid read overall.
*Spoilers below*
My main issue is with the ending. I didn't realize until after why the story felt so off. This occurred especially during the in-between periods of the different instances. The students spent their "points" earned from the games pretty wontonly and in a lot of instances seemed very casual as to being in a death game. It created a weird dichatomy between them seeming very unfraid as the story tried to push the idea that this is a terrifying situation to be in.
While the author tried to come up with a surprise twist at the ending, it pretty much killed my investment in the story. Reading back over it makes the rest of the story feel rather cheap and kills almost any of the intensity the novel may have had. Personally, I think the author had the idea for the ending first and wrote the story with it in mind. If I had liked the ending, it would have felt like a great revelation, but since outside of the feeling that something was weird I can't remember any foreshadowing it came across as rather jarring (also a company that sketchy with technology that advanced and the government isn't worried about it?).
