3 angsty love triangle stars

If you haven't read More of Us to the West yet, go read that first. These books must be read in order.

It's important to be aware there is a very emotional love triangle that consumes all 695 pages of this book. If you can't handle that kind of angst and drama, I would avoid reading this one altogether.

This book is primarily Chris’ story after the plane crash, alternating with Jack and Bud on another island. I missed some of my favorite characters, like Jim and Lilly. They are in this story, but very minimally. There is A LOT going on in this book. New characters, new conspiracies, and a few answers.

Maria, a flight attendant from the plane, is a character that I initially liked, she is spicy, passionate, argumentative, she doesn't take crap from anyone, including Chris. However, her constant need to scream KREESE every time she needed him became annoying. And the idea that she is mistaken for a was eye rolling.

I had a hard time with Chris in book one, and really didn’t like him in this one. Being inside his head was miserable.
Chris believed a marriage meant something. He took his vows seriously. He had promised to remain faithful to only Alania, and he had given everything to honor the promises he made to her.
Umm, hello? Does Chris not remember what he did in book one? Making out with a naked woman in bed who was NOT his wife? This is still cheating. Don’t Clinton us Chris.

I didn’t want to read about Chris’

To top everything off, there was a second love triangle ! So now we have two intertwining love triangles. It was all too much! I felt like I was watching a bad reality show. And what’s with bringing back I can only hope he will be a red shirt in one of the next books.

In case you want to know about Alaina.

All I’m saying is that if Maria died and we didn’t have to hear her insufferable “KREESE!” I would not shed a tear. Her shallow character and gaslighting Alaina constantly before they became sudden “bffs”, triggered me to no end. Also am I the only one who feels and sees absolutely no chemistry between her and Chris. Honestly them coming out of the island together as platonic friends would have made more sense, rather than an unnecessary love triangle just because Aly had a love interest. Chris and Maria essentially talking shit about Aly and how she “wasn’t there when he needed her” or something along the lines of “now that I think about it she never really did anything romantic for me” OH PLEASE. Maria was a 5 star gaslighter and trouble starter for the sake of her own theatrics ,and made it to one of my top 5 most hated characters of all time including Ryle from It Ends with Us and Luca from Bound by Honor and Gale from the Hunger Games lol.
I loved the first book, so I was a bit sad to give this 3 stars, as though it was more action oriented, I had to slowly trudge along to keep up and hold interest at times :( . Fingers crossed for the next book and that Maria gets left behind!

This is a generous 3.5* rating. I am rounding up because I want to give this book another chance when the Audio version becomes available. However, I anticipate Maria's voice and constant whinging over "Kreese" might do my head in. Trying to be optimistic though - new year ahead and all that. Also, I did read this book while on an island holiday and I am in good headspace.

I really enjoy Trinity Dunn's storytelling. The fact that the book has me so worked up into an emotional frenzy is a good thing. There are some excellent developments in this saga and it moves along at a pretty good pace with a great deal of adventure along the way. I enjoyed the variety of alternating POVs. For the 2nd installment of a series, it kept me engaged/morbidly fascinated through moments of eye-rolling annoyance. As expected, Jim and Lilly continue to steal the show when they make their appearances.

I have been struggling to wrangle my thoughts about the character development. There is the introduction of new characters and events which have a wee bit of resemblance to another book that shall not be named, and the baffling reappearance of a character who lurks in the shadows. I am intrigued to see where the author takes this.

My biggest issue with this book is Maria and Chris. I wanted to like Maria because I think she was intended to be the antithesis of Alaina; but, it is all too much. At least Chris' weirdo behaviour is explained away with a possible traumatic brain injury. Maria, on the other hand, is honestly one of the most annoying characters in any book I have ever read. There is a non-stop stream of bullsh*t and false bravado coming out of her, which makes her appear almost schizophrenic (Dahveed, anyone?). She complains constantly, flirts endlessly, leads men on, whines that they only want one thing, is obsessed with schlongs/sex and then cries that no one has ever loved her. Uggghhh (insert generic Spanish term of frustration here). Then, by the end of the book we are supposed to believe she is the heroine? Or is it the magical life giving Alaina? The author just spent the whole book playing them off one another, now they are buddies? I am so confused.

While I am looking forward to what the author will throw at us in the next book (Remnants on the Tides of Time) all I can keep thinking is, "what just happened". This reminds me of going on the jungle cruise ride at Disneyworld for the first time as a little kid. One minute you are enjoying the most magical place on earth, the next you ask yourself … "WTF, were those cannibals"?

Two main reasons this doesn’t get 5 stars from me. 1) Maria. I really could not stand her character—she made the first half of this book hard to read. I couldn’t have cared less whether Chris and Alaina got back together or not, but I absolutely wanted to riot at the idea of him with Maria. No reason other than I just don’t like her. That being said, by the time they confessed their loved for each other, I did tear up a little bit and was rooting for them. 3) the third person point of view. I know its preference, and some people may love it, but it takes me right out the story. That is the main reason it took me MONTHS to finish this beast of a book. Going back and forth between first and third person just made it that much worse. Pick one and commit.

Now, aside from that, I loved this book. The story was there, it held my attention. There were a couple of shocking moments. And of course, another brutal cliff hanger. I can’t wait for the third book to see how everything is wrapped up!

Such an addicting book! The best series I’ve read this year. I absolutely love the LOST vibes of this series. It was one of my favorite shows, so this series is like my kryptonite. The action and adventure in this book is just so good. I love the characters (mostly, we’ll get to that), although I missed more content from our original Island family! Jim’s English accent had me cracking up!

Now for some spoilers and things I didn’t care for…

I am not really a Maria/Chris fan. For lots of reasons.

For one thing, Maria shit all over Alaina basically the entire book. Even to her face. Blaming her for shit that she really didn’t deserve. There are two sides to every story and after getting both Alaina and Chris’ perspective chapters, I still feel like neither one of them saw their marriage from the other person’s side. People grieve differently. End of story. Alaina lost her goddamn “miracle” child that she pined for, and probably had postpartum depression, and yet she was supposed to be there for her baby husband. She took TWO months of time to herself to grieve and be away from the things that reminded her of her loss. Two months is nothing. It’s like going to a treatment center, which honestly would have been appropriate for her situation. And he acted like she abandoned him. What???? Not only was she grieving the death of her daughter, but also the very real possibility that this was her ONLY chance to be a mother. And she made it clear many times she wasn’t leaving him, but she just needed to get away and have some time to herself. I’m not saying Alaina is innocent in the failure of their marriage, but Chris made her out to be such a heartless monster and boy did Maria take every opportunity to remind them BOTH of it. I feel like when Alaina talked about the failure of her marriage with Jack she took a lot more responsibility for things, even things that weren’t her fault, whereas Chris seemed to put most of the blame on her. He conveniently left out his cheating history to Maria for a long time, and when he did mention it she was like, “well who could blame you? You were lonely. I would never abandon you like that KREESE!” It was irritating and cringey to read.

And I honestly don’t love Maria the way a lot of people seem to. Yes, she was funny. She did bring some entertainment to the book. However, I personally think she was very manipulative. She demanded Chris do everything for her on the island. I don’t recall reading a single thing she did to contribute to their day to day life for the two months they were stranded alone. He did everything, while being injured and with very little resources provided to them. She called him names and belittled him constantly. She even pressured him into many inappropriate situations, considering he was a married man who made it very clear he was looking for his wife. She even admitted if she would have really known what he was like (in bed) she would have taken him that first night, “wife be damned.” Which shows she harbored lust for him from the beginning and shamelessly flirted with him and tried to provoke him many many times, despite his protests. When she did build him up, it was like, “well this is what a true man is like, and now you are a true man for doing…” She called him her Superman and her hero because she constantly expected him to dote on her and take care of everything for her. And then he had the audacity to have inner monologues about her being independent and how he admired her so much for it when Alaina was so opposite… Maria had a very pampered existence after being rescued from the island, so it was easy for her to shine in certain situations, like when she defended herself or when she killed the chicken birds without hesitation. She never had to work day-to-day the way the rest of the survivors had to.

And then let’s look at Chris’s behavior. It bothered me that it was so easy for him to have romantic thoughts of Maria, especially from the get go. Regardless of what we know played out for Alaina or what the status of their marriage was, I just feel like the love he claimed he had so desperately for her couldn’t have been that great for him to so easily slide into those feelings for Maria. Especially given his history of ALREADY cheating on her! He is a repeat offender at this point. And then to make himself feel better he accuses her of cheating during the time “she left him.”

The way Maria strung John along is also disgusting. And honestly, I don’t blame John for what he did. Especially considering how much pride meant to gentlemen at that time. Maria used John as a back up plan, after claiming she didn’t want to be Chris’ second best. And then after everything and Chris was free, she said she would marry John just so he would help them with their plans, all the while, trying to provoke Chris into admitting his feelings.

In spite of my dislike of Maria/Chris, I really loved the series. The ending was good, and then of course a cliff hanger. It’s one that will clearly lead to a much longer resolution, so I can’t wait to continue reading about my favorite island family’s adventures when the next book comes out next month! I hope we got much more Jim/Lilly content. Even more Bruce/Anna/Magna/Bud. Some background story on them would be so cool!

Sooooo many thoughts, so many feels! I love books that take you on an emotional rollercoaster, and this is definitely one of them.

There were times I hated it, and there were times I loved it. And while I didn't like it as much as the first book, it was still a remarkable story. Epic really, with so many characters and circumstances to think about.

The biggest thing that turned me off was the Outlander vibes this story gave me, but that could be me overthinking because really, how much could be happening in the 1700? However, if Jack and Alaina are separated for exactly 20 years, I'm gonna be raging! Also, I do like stories told by duel narrators, but the switching from 1st person to 3rd person POV was a mess. It was just too jarring to be thrown back and forth like that.

However, the character development is amazing! These a flawed, authentic, fleshed out people. I seriously got pissed with Alaina. She was selfish and so unfair to Chris. To think of her making endless love to Jack, while Chris was being whipped, chained, and then nearly starved to death in isolation was heart wrenching. I know she didn't know but it doesn't make it better. It's hard to know how to truly feel about her situation because although her and Jack do seem like they are meant to be, the way Chris was left to just turn to Maria felt wrong. And I don't want to feel that way because I love Chris and I love Maria! I loved the way they would fight all day but sleep cuddled up together on the island. But something was missing or off between them. I hope they won't feel like this in book 3.

Favorite quote:
In so many ways, I felt like a feather floating through ember, my edges searing as I waited silently for the conversation to start, my insides burning away as I envisioned having to make the choice between them.

Funniest quote:
“Christ, if ye’ had a thought between the two of ye’ it might die of loneliness!"

"He’s a very dramatic man. I had to make sure he wouldn’t throw himself into the ocean."

Holy shitballs this book was even more amazing than the 1st! Soooo much happens and it’s one obstacle, conspiracy, love triangle and plot twist after another. I was completely glued to every single page.

Someone wrote a review saying these books are like Lost meets Outlander and I couldn’t agree more, only these are wayyyyy better! I need it made into a Netflix series 🙏🏻

The wait for book 3 is going to absolutely kill me 😩

This book is like the television show, Lost merged with Outlander . I'm surprised by how suspenseful this book has been. While the first book focused on the two main characters and surviving on a deserted island, this book added different characters (now there are four main of them) and adapting to more than just being stranded. The twist was unexpected in a big way.

I didn't realize that this was going to end on a cliffhanger. I need the next book stat.

Great read this author is so talented

The author has a great way of making you feel from others perspective because let me tell you I hated Chris. But seeing thing from his prospective I saw his love and his pain. Don’t get me wrong I still don’t like him, but I don’t hate him anymore. This book was great I just wish we got more of our main character and Jim (my favorite). This book has so many characters but I had no problem remembering names Bc they all have such distinct personalities. The one big pet peeve have. Warning slight spoiler but Phil???? We just gonna let him join the group again and pretend he didn’t do what he did??? Like I’m sorry but no throw him over board. And I think our main character had such a small reaction to seeing him again? Anyways I’m sure he’ll do something horrible again and that’s why he was brought back but please for the love of god don’t try to redeem him. ANYWAYS read the book

This series is so much fun! I love how relatable the characters are. How perfect and flawed they are at the same time. I love the storyline as much as the characters. There is no instant love, everyone has to work for their relationships. I am in love with the setting as well! Highly recommend this series to anyone. There's something for everyone from time travel to romance to sea adventures and mystery.

15% in, I CANNOT STAND Maria!

The book was very good, though not as good as book 1. Maria got better, but still not my favourite character. I find the mc, now that their circumstances have changed, are doing a lot of "rewriting history" to justify their actions and feelings now which is annoying. But still a good book. Looking forward to book 3!

Great continuation of a story impossible to put down!

I was so excited when this book showed up in my library. I had pre-ordered it immediately after finishing the first book. It started off slowly and I didn't rally like Chris or Maria at first, but as the story continued, I became as engrossed in the new characters as those I got to know in the first book. It's a great story with the perfect balance between character development and action/suspense. I'm an Outlander super fan and it's clear those books are the inspiration for this story, but it quickly takes on a life of its own. This book, like the first ends on a cliff hanger, but like the first, is a complete story, so while it will be hard to wait for the next book, I'm definitely going to be pre-ordering it as well.

Tiring without getting to the point.

After waiting so long for the 2nd book I had hoped for more information as to what happened and how they would return. I found myself skipping ahead more and more as I got bored with the characters and their obvious story lines. You knew all along how it was going to play out and who would end up together. There is no way I would waste more time on a 3rd book. I should have stopped after the 1st one.

I am not crazy about this book. The first one was great. There were a few things I did not like about this one. One being Maria. What an awful character! Especially being Latina myself, she was absolutely hideous. From her accent to her attitude. I was hoping she would be killed off somehow. The other was Chris. He was such a “tool”. I hated the fact that the author made Alaina the bad guy in the book. At least Jack was kept the same way. I don’t know if I’ll read the rest of the series.

WOW WOW WOW WOW! I just can't believe the writing of these two books. So well done. And lets stop and appreciate the level of research that was required to pull off book 2! To be transported back to the 1700's and to put so much detail into the book regarding clothing, customs, geography, historical figures, language, etc. I am seriously impressed.

Now - I will admit that the first half of the book was a bit of a slog for me. This was partly due to being in the 1700's (not my cup of tea) and partly because I couldn't care less about Chris and Maria. I understand that knowing what they went through added to the storyline and was necessary to see the full picture, but after the epic love story in book 1 with Alaina and Jack -- I just wanted to jump back to them.

HOLY LOVE TRIANGLE DRAMA in this book! So much drama surrounding who likes who and who loves who yada yada. If you don't like love triangles - STAY AWAY! I thought I would hate it because I am a reverse harem/why choose fiend, but this was well done. The TENSION in this book is palpable. I could just feel it when everyone was in the same room.

Chris and Maria: ugh. just ugh. I feel like the author went above and beyond trying to make us like them and him especially. The way he remained loyal to a wife that he didn't even know was still alive was commendable but it was out of a total sense of obligation. I wanted to like Chris and he had his moments in this book, but book 1 Chris ruined that illusion for me. And then we have Maria. I REALLY REALLY don't like her AT ALL. I am not sure what it was exactly about her. She was just mean and nasty and entitled. Chris would have been more likable if he had a more likable love interest, I think. At the end of the day, Chris deserves love too, and I suppose its his choice (ahaha like these characters are real!!).

Alaina and Jack: man o man am I happy things turned out the way they did. for a second I really thought Jack is just such a likable character. Maybe that is because we had a whole book to fall in love with him?? Alaina is such a great heroine too. She has been through so much and deserves happiness. And can we talk about

All the time travel stuff really started to lose me though. Maybe I was reading too fast, but I have no idea how they have surmised so much about how to get back. It all seems like sketchy patchwork of a plan. To tell you I am anxious for book 3 would be an understatement!!!!

That ending though *insert terrified face*. I did not guess that it would go down like that. And WHY would Jack

ANXIOUSLY AWAITING BOOK 3 SLIGHTLY IMPATIENTLY.

I was highly anticipating this book having ending the first on such a big cliffhanger….why do so many people hate cliffhangers btw? To be completely honest, at first I wasn’t sure I wanted or cared about how Chris and Maria survived. I didn’t hate Chris, I felt bad for him and knew he was also a victim of the worst thing to happen to two people and they both reacted poorly. I wanted to know more about the main characters from the first book. I mean where was Jack, did he even survive? How is Ally going to handle this and will she survive the pregnancy? By the time the book does tell what happened to Jack and Bud on their journey (which was very early on in the story, maybe chapter 4) I couldn’t even care less and I just needed more of Chris and Maria. In fact every time the book switches perspective and the story was away from them I was annoyed. I felt like I already had enough of the other characters and I needed all of Chris and Maria. I loved their chemistry together, the way Maria kept him going when he needed it. They had me laughing out loud so many times throughout this whole story. I can’t wait for the audio! This book does end on another cliffhanger but not bad as before. I can’t wait the 3rd book to see what’s next for our group of survivors.

Não é tão engajante como "More of us to the West".

These books are a must!

First off these books are amazing! I was in a book rut and needed something different from my normal reads and I am so glad that I stumbled upon the adrift series! It’s like Lost meets Outlander but in the pacific islands! There’s romance action different POVs from the female and male main characters and a lot of funny moments too! I loved Maria the sassy Latina we meet in this book she is hilarious her banter with Chris AKA Kreese (Ally’s thought to be dead husband) was the highlight of the book. Jack and Ally are back as well and things get complicated. The rest of the island family is still there as well. My only complaint about this book is I wish Jim had more funny moments and one liners like he did in the last book. I can’t wait for the 3rd book to come out! Thanks Trinity for an amazing adventure for me to escape in!

Okay, I liked this one much better than the first book in the series. I love Maria! She is a spitfire! Unlike Alaina, who is so whiny and high maintenance. I'm listening to the audio version and the narration is superb. Especially the reading of Maria with her accent. I love it. I'm going to buy these for my stepdaughter. As for me, on to book three!

I love the Adrift series!

I waited for months to read this book after finishing More of Us to the West. It did not disappoint! This book tells the story of Chris and how he survived after the plane crash and the circumstances he found himself in while he searched for his wife, Alaina. Their reunion, the choices they make, the ever-strengthening bond among the survivors as well as the introduction of new characters (are they trustworthy or not?) make this book hard to put down.
And now I find myself waiting, once again, for the next book!
