Love being an author writing about things that get you crying, laughing, thinking - from guys in 'The Cave' to school bullying in 'I Am Jack'

Super Jack by Susanne Gervay

Every institution from Play-school to kindergarten to schools colludes in the illusion that life is about Mum, Dad, two kids and Big Ted. It is extraordinary, still, that so little is written and so little spoken to help children deal with divorce, which is a major trauma in the lives of many. Divorce may be common but it is painful. Susanne Gervay writes humorously but with honesty about the rigours of living in a mix-master family.

Jack’s little sister Samantha thinks life with the new stepdad will be all Coke and chips but Jack knows now “there won’t by any night when she can get into Mum’s bed.”

Jack faces the problems of dealing with a new stepdad. A stepbrother and also having his Gran come and live with them on a family trip to the Gold Coast. Gervay’s strength lies not only in her humour and honesty but in the fact that her characters are the sort you wouldn’t mind sharing the back seat with. Her language is also rich and colourful; her imagery is there to assist the narrative rather than show off in an ostentatious literary display. Jack’s little Italian girlfriend Anna has “chocolate drop eyes.”

The John Marsdens of the writing scene are very good at top-level abuse and the Paul Jennings are excellent in sheer fun but Susanne Gervay is rare in her ability to place common problems for children within the spectrum of normal family life. The result is that she makes it OK for the children to talk about them.

When Jack's mother and her live-in boyfriend Rob decide to take the family on a vacation from their home in Australia to the Gold Coast, Jack is thrilled and smuggles his science experiment, a banana growing fungi, along with him. But the trip becomes complicated once Jack realizes that Rob has also invited his son Leo who lives with his mother. The two try to get along, but both boys are carrying secrets and resentments, and both long for Rob's attention. Still, despite some of the conflicts and the zaniness of all of the family members, the vacationers have a wonderful time. Readers will get a kick out of Jack's grandmother who is always looking for a bargain and purchases large quantities of odd items such as purple underwear, and they'll laugh, perhaps sheepishly, at his mother's laundry day disaster in which all of the family's clothing comes out of the washing machine dyed in the same hues. Filled with humor and some poignant moments, the book allows readers to slowly come to certain realizations about each of the travelers, including Jack's good friend, Anna. Fans of I Am Jack will enjoy this one too.

I have a great family, but they drive me crazy sometimes. There's Nanna, who is obsessed with buying bargains, especially underpants. How many pairs does a kid really need? There's Mum, who does star jumps. I wish she wouldn't do them, especially in public. There's my sort of my step dad. Rob, who is the best dish washer in the whole world. He doesn't get it. I don't care if plates sparkle. There's my sister Samantha, who is love with dogs, especially with floppy, who is big and flat and stuffed. Sometimes I think there's something Wrong with my sister. There's my best friend Anna, Who is ... well, she's nice. And Me Jack. I'm twelve and a scientist. You should see my fantastic fungus.
We're going on a terrific holiday up north. Beaches and theme park. Well, it's terrific apart from LEO, Rob's son. Yuck! Why does he have to come? I KNOW he's going to ruin everything.

I've read all the I am Jack books now and love them. The kids are like every kid sort of funny annoying and all that jazz. This time Jack faces a blended family and its tough but he works it out. Fantastic read for kids and for parents who know the other meanings.
