The Compound Network nearly killed them. Now they’re the only ones who can save it.
The rules have changed.
1. The compound can’t be saved . . . unless it can. (Major Henry Mortimer is determined to fix the organization that almost destroyed him and everyone he cares about—even if his “supporters” seem to be working against him.)
2. Empaths are doomed to self-destruct . . . unless they aren’t. (Bastian Lucas thinks he’s accepted that his power is killing him—until a questionable ally offers him a dangerous way out.)
3. Failed experiments get buried . . . unless they don’t. (Laurel was done looking back, but when a presumed-dead asset turns up at the compound very much alive, she has the opportunity to right past wrongs—or to make everything worse.)
With their fledgling new compound sinking into chaos, Henry, Bastian, and Laurel must come together to unravel a conspiracy that starts where their pasts inexplicably meet . . . before everything they've been trying to rebuild goes up in flames.
I'm an indie fantasy author, editor, and YouTuber who writes about snarky, magical people doing snarky, magical things.
When I'm not writing or editing, I can generally be found cross stitching something sassy, daydreaming about hedgehogs, or drinking far too many mochas--usually all at once.
I was somewhat hesitant to read this book considering my mixed reaction to the characters in Dark Empathy, the previous book in the Compound series. Happily, any issues I had were completely blown away by this story. This is not to say the first book in the series is bad, it’s just that this one has stronger writing and stronger characterization and humanization of those characters. And there are quite a few new intriguing characters in this book, as well as a better and more in-depth look at Henry and Bastian, which helped me connect with them and their story.
The writing is strong, the pacing is tight and focused, and the side characters are all of them intriguing.
I realllllly enjoyed this book. But Ill be honest, I very nearly gave up at the start. It didnt have the same connection between the characters, they were all hiding things from eachother. Even with laurels viewpoint.
It was soooo worth sticking out.... I had no way to guess who was with Bastian and Henry and who was against them. I really cant wait for the next book
Okay, so... this is going to be a cliff hanger. So for those of you who hate waiting... try and hold off to not torture yourself like I have just done. This is not a stand alone either. There is too much back story with these characters and world building to pick up on book 2.
If you read my last review, I was disappointed that there were some questions left unanswered from the last book. I feel like most of those have been answered now, so I will chalk it up to good editing on book 1 to cut excess to not drag the story. And speaking of the story, I hope you are ready for a tangled mess of who is on what team, because it is going to get REALLY messy. Sure Henry, Bastian, and Laurel have lofty goals, but of course there are too many people who don't want those goals to succeed. So.... issues abound. Then add in a long lost sparking friend, and well... just keep reading and stop trying to figure it out.
The structure of this story of rearranging the order in which the events of this book was a good move. It quickly captures your attention of what everything is heading towards and I was desperate to find out how we were going to get there. Also really liked having a third POV, from Laurel, in there for a little something different in the narrative. Fun seeing what goes on the head of a plantspeaker who seems like a constant optimist. Still the same great writing from book 1, but more refined. Also expansion on that great world building, along with a bunch of new assets we get to see how their powers work.
Love this story, this concept, and these characters, so I don't have much else to say to convince you. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, but I'll be waiting for book 3 and grabbing that up when I see it's available. I'm excited for others to read it and go on this adventure and to have people to talk about it with. Because that ending... WTF?!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Henry and Bastian had a lot to endure, all in their own way. Henry realizes he is an asset and without his knowledge his memory was wiped. Bastian was forced to act as a human lie detector, destroying the minds of the criminals in the process. The book fail-safe was a very entertaining story with lots of political agenda’s going on. The only reason they promoted Henry and Bastian, so that they want to prove they cannot run a compound with assets, and they would do anything to make them fail.
But it doesn’t seem that they can catch them in the act and must go through extreme measures to get what they want, no matter the cost. It is very clear of the beginning that government and the council cannot be trusted. Neither the military even though it seems they on their side.
The love between Henry and Bastian is endearing, with Henry’s savior complex, he wants to save his love. But Bastian with his martyr complex doesn’t think he deserves to be saved, and he is ready to die. Until an opportunity presents to them that there is an asset out there that can save Bastian's life. How far will they go to find this asset, and will they be on time?
Lauren on the other had gets unsuspected surprise when one of her old compound friends emerges without his memory. But can he be trusted, where did he go for over a year? Lauren is to good trusting, but Bastian feels that there is something more sinister going on.
A story full of plot twists and not sure who you can trust. A secret organization bend on destroying what Bastian and Henry trying to build up. But there are too many secrets, and it doesn’t end well.
I was compelled to read the story until the end, well written, and love the characters. A war between people with abilities and those who have not.
Middle books have the hardest job - they have to continue the story set up in the first, but also strike a balance between staying consistent to the beloved elements of the first and introducing fresh elements in the same vein. They have to be better, with more action, but must do this under the weight of audience expectations the first didn't have, and must still leave room for the finale to later step in and be even bigger and better. The middle book has to simultaneously grow the characters in meaningful ways but also maintain them in preparation for the finale. It's a big job, and even bigger for the author who has to wrangle it, but Katy Morgan handles it with uncanny skill. There are no middle book woes here.
We pick up with Bastian and Henry in a hopeful, but tenuous, new era. They're running the Compound, and if they can just get this right, they could be poised to change the balance of power and just treatment in their world. But the factions around them are divided into more shades of grey than they can see, and the past they all thought gone and buried is just one flick of a match away from bringing everything to ashes.
I could rave about this series for days. If you haven't picked up Dark Empathy yet, you are missing out on the wonderfulness that is the Bastian/Henry ship and the "us against the world" themes of their efforts to save each other, their kind, and the world if there's time.
You've gotta be kidding me!!! I can't - Emotional Overload. I. Just. Can't.
My heart is racing I'm so livid I'm shaking
This is not how it's supposed to happen!
I'm not giving away any spoilers!! I will share that this second book ends on a hanging by a thread, screaming at the top of your lungs "ITSNOTFAIR" cliffhanger
Toss out everything you thought you knew about the compounds
Henry is in charge now and things are going to change
Assets are People and they will be treated as such ... Dream big Henry we need you. And Bastian. ... In this second episode, we get to meet all kinds of new people as well as those we already have rooted (get it?) in our lives Some pretty cool ones Others who are toxic as hades Some who leave us questioning their every motive Others who offer us hope The question is who do we trust?
Don't even hesitate to one click - this blows book one out of the water in terms of edge-of-your-seat spine-tingling backstabbing, action-packed, heart-stopping, suspense And yes Bastian and Henry are still trying to find their legs
This is another long book in the series and picks up a few months after the last one finished. It definitely doesn't work as a stand-alone; you need to know more about Henry, Bastian and Laurel for this book to work properly. Like the last one, this book had plenty of action. In fact, I think even more went on it this one, it was none-stop. The characters all kept me guessing from start to finish. Whilst there were some familiar faces from book 1, there were new secondary characters introduced here too which were interesting to learn about. I also like how Laurel got some of her own chapters in this book too. Her narratives were a wonderful addition and it was great to see a different perspective on things.
Overall, this is a good second book in the series. I wish I'd known in advance that it ends of a massive cliffhanger so beware of that if, like me, you prefer things to be slightly more wrapped up at the end of a book. Despite this, I'd recommend it to others and am looking forward to book 3!
Bastian and Henry are now in charge of the compound, or are they? There are oversite committees and more than one opinion as to what they should be doing. As an empath, it looks like Bastian has a limited life span until an offer comes from a questionable source. Henry is working hard to ensure the compound thrives but supporters may not be so supportive after all and failed experiments keep coming back to haunt them. As everything seems to sink into chaos, it is clear that they can rely on very few. Laurel joins Henry and Bastian as they try to unravel conspiracy on top of conspiracy before everything erupts.
Henry and Bastian are sharing their living quarters and are very much in love. Now the committees are trying to use that against them. Neither man knows who to trust. Laurel is a help but even she is torn between a former colleague and her present ones. Nothing is going as expected and one thing is sure, they do not have all the facts. The ending was not what was expected and leaves you wanting more.
I loved Fail-Safe by Katy Morgan. It's the second book in the Compound series. The books do need to be read in order to understand what is happening since there is a plot that runs through the series. OMG, so much happened in this book with Henry's compound and the arrival of James, who was a friend of Laurel's from her previous compound, which James had burned down and in which she thought had died there. A healer supposedly helped James in the forest, but he can't remember where and Henry orders James, Chloe, and Bastien to search the dead zone to see if James can remember anything. Bastien finds out how to control his power's destructiveness to his own body, but we will see if he has the conscience to use it. We are left with another compound destroyed and the council trying to take over again. I can't wait for the next book to come out to find out what happens to Bastien, Laurel, Angelica, Chloe, Kent, and the rest of the assets. I sure hope the council members get what is coming for them.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Writing a worthy sequel to a series opener as brilliant as Dark Empathy is no easy feat, but Katy Morgan knocks it out of the park. Henry, Bastian and Laurel are in charge of the compound now, trying to turn it into a safe haven and volunteer-only residence and training facility for assets. But they're not left entirely to their own devices. Between the council providing "oversight" and the past coming back to haunt them, they've got their share of troubles to contend with... and that's not even counting the fact that Bastian's health is deteriorating thanks to his power slowly killing him. Suffice it to say that there's plenty of plot to keep the reader hooked, and like with the first book, I remained glued to the page all the way through. I really love these characters (though Laurel was admittedly a lot more annoying than I remembered her) and can't wait to see them again. The only question is: When?? Because damn, that cliffhanger ending is downright evil...
*** I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. ***
Fail-Safe is the second book in Katy Morgan's the Compound Series. Not a standalone and it ends on a dramatic cliffhanger. It's so much better than book one, which I could not like. The beginning of the story was a bit uneven, but it smoothed out not so far in. Henry and Bastian's relationship develops in book two, although quite a few outside forces try interfering. My favorite character has to be Laurel. She's the first character with Phytokinesis that I've come across. Her POV has a distinct voice, adds so much to the storyline. Lots of secrets being kept, lots of twists and turns plot wise. It kept my interest and sometimes kept me on the edge of my seat. All in all, a better experience for me than book one. Good worldbuilding, interesting events. I am not a fan of third person/present tense and it did take me out of the story. Just a bit. A thoughtful read, but not a quick one as I read in fits and starts. The cliffhanger alone is reason for reading book three. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review/
Okay so be forewarned that there is a huge cliffhanger in this one. I can't wait for the next book. Also, this is not a stand-a-lone, you really need to read the first book before getting into this one. There is a lot of backstory & world building in book 1. Now strap in for a wild ride. Trying to keep track of who is a good person & who isn't keep me guessing to the end. Our MC's are trying so hard to make things better for the "assets" after all of the horrors they went through from the first book. And on top of it, Henry is still trying to keep secret his own power. I love Laurel & if you are concerned, this is not a menage with a female partner. I love watching the "assets" come into their own and see how their powers develop.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest opinion
** Cliffhanger Warning** Some people may want to wait until the next book is out as this book ends in a cliffhanger.
This book follows on from the first book about 6 months after the events in Dark Empathy, it is filled with as much action, in fact there is more. This book is more of a thrill ride from the off and trying to maintain any idea of who is an ally for Henry and Bastian is difficult right until the end, but I suspect there is more twists and turns to come. Laurel is a wonderful character and in this book she is given even more of a voice and some chapters of her own meaning, readers get to know her and her truly brilliant personality. The writing style in this book is slightly more refined and more confident to my mind which was nice to see/read. I really can't wait to find out what happens next.
Fail-Safe by Katy Morgan is the thrilling continuation of the Compound Series. In book 2 the stakes are very much higher, and trust is thin on the ground.
While I loved Dark Empathy, Fail-Safe is a better novel. This may just come down to a bit more experience and confidence, but Katy Morgan takes it to the next level. The characters feel more developed. Off and on there tended to be a bit of shallowness in the first book, not so much in Fail-Safe, it definitely feels like the author is finding their feet.
The pacing is much improved too, with fewer lags, or where the story goes off track, the world building and story telling was stronger giving the story the emotional impact it needed. If the author has improved this much with just the second book, I can’t wait to see what happens in the third!
Sooo good!! This picks up where the first book left off. Bastian and Henry are now in charge of the compound. Bastian might have a limited life span as an empath. Henry is working hard to make the compound safe, but things have a way of coming back to haunt them. They are in love and living together. I cannot wait for book 3, this one left off on a cliffhanger. The story kept me engaged, hooked me from the beginning and didn’t let go. Overall, a fantastic read, I cannot wait for the next one! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This is an exciting and compelling continuation of the Compound series. It's a continuing story and picks up where the first book ended, so they must be read in order. Henry and Bastian are now trying to save the Compound, but there are plenty of people who want them to fail. There are plenty more twists and turns in this one, along with some new faces, Questions get answered, but new ones arise. Who is friend, who is foe, and most important, who can be trusted? I really like the story line, the characters, and the world-building. I wish there was more steam between Henry and Bastian, but I guess they are probably too busy with everything else going in. Maybe in the next book....
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
I don’t know if I would call this series fantasy or science fiction because there are hints of both, but whatever you want to call it it’s an interesting read about characters with powers. They were being exploited and they are trying to make things better, but neither the characters nor we readers are really aware of all that is going on. Katy Morgan does a great job of slowing letting things be found out and keeping the story exciting. Luckily for us readers the last book is coming out soon and hopefully we will get those answers and a happy ending for Henry and Bastian. I have read a number of series about this type of thing and I really enjoyed this one because of the way that the author keeps you guessing.
I got a copy of this book from GRR and this is my honest review
Henry, Bastian, and Laurel, et al, have such hopes for changing the terrible system the psychics have been laboring under now that they have turned in who they think were the worst offenders and forced them into the light of day. However, the government turns out to have stacked the deck against them again. You can feel how earnest Henry is about making life better for everyone, but the forces arrayed against them seem insurmountable. The ending of this book leaves one feeling desperate for all the characters we have gotten to know at The Compound and anticipating the next book to see what will happen to them all. I'm looking forward to next month when the third book is set to be published.
The Second Novel in the Compound series, Fail-Safe Finds our Principles in charge of one of the Compounds psionic potentials are trained and housed. But not all is what it seems, the overall themes of this novel seem to be: “Until you are dead, there is still hope for change,” and “Good intentions aren’t enough, you have to course-correct for idiocy, revenge, and political maneuvering.” The novel ends on kind of a hopeless note, as the noose of a plot seems to draw tight around our principal’s necks.
I do hope that the story plays out positively in the next installment.
Fail-Safe is the second book in the Compound Series. This series is best read in order. We are back with Henry, Bastian, and Lauren for more of the story. This series just gets better and better. We are still on the rollercoaster with all the twists and turns ending in a cliffhanger. Lots of questions get answers but new questions arise. There are lots of things being hidden. Henry and Bastian are growing as a couple even as others try to stop them from completing what they set out to. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book and series.
So we're back with Henry, Bastian and Laurel. Things get complicated and messy because these three have high expectations and so many are doing everything in their power to deter them and you can't quite be sure who's friend or foe. The magic and world building continues to amaze me. The book does suffer from middle book syndrome, in my opinion, it was somewhat sacrificed as a vehicle to simply move the plot along to the finish line and I felt like it took a long time to not really do much.
We pick up right where Book One left off—and the fall into the darkness only gets deeper. Bastian and Henry’s bond grows stronger, their relationship intensifying with every stolen moment. But not everyone wants to see them together. Envy, betrayal, and sabotage threaten to tear them apart, forcing them to fight for what they’ve found in each other.
Emotions run high, loyalties are tested, and just when you think you can breathe… the story drops you off the edge with a heart-stopping cliffhanger.
Oh my gosh, this book was so good! I could not put it down! There are so may moving pieces in this book, who can we trust, who is not to be trusted at all costs, the mysterious voice, Henry's negation power....so much happens and yet not enough! As I got closer to the end, I was thinking that it couldn't be the end, so much had to happen yet! I want the next book SO BAD. I want to know what happens, where do we go from here?!
Alright so get ready for a wild and intense ride. This one takes up right where the first one left off but this one has an intense cliffhanger that is driving me insane. I need the third one so badly. We learn more about the characters which made me so happy. Though some people are still trying to hide things. I am so excited for the next one! I loved this second book and it should be read in order to enjoy it the most.
I enjoyed the first book and this book takes us deeper into the compound. Make sure you read the first book in this series or you will be lost and beware....cliffhanger! (I hate them but this series is good!) This book was snarky and really, really messy but alot of fun to read. So, buckle up and get ready for some twists and turns!
This is book two of the authors Compound series and it needs to be read in order, we are back with the MCs for another action packed story full of twists and turns which kept me interested throughout it did get a little slow in the middle of the story but the cliffhanger ending has me wanting to read book three as soon as possible.
This is the second book in the series and it was as good as the first. The story is very involved in intense and it pulls you ride in. And I have a hard time waiting for the third book in the series.
Now they are going to try and save it. Also there are empaths in here as such that makes it really interesting because so am I one. Three characters go in this that keep you going with wonderment. They have a new compound so turn those pages to see if they succeed.
This was great addition to this fantastic series. The storyline was just as engaging as the previous books and the characters continued to keep my interest, all in all an enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
They had been abused by those in the compound and now it is up to them to save the compound. How will they save the compound? What will they need to do? Can the compound be saved? Will they want to take that next step? See what they decide to do
