You're Gonna Make It: Unlocking Resilience When Life Is a Mess

Rate this book
Discover the grit you need to persevere through life's hard times—with the resilience, honesty, and unshakeable joy of Jesus—with the popular pastor and host of Hillsong Channel’s Real with Daniel Fusco and Jesus Is Real Radio

“You’re Gonna Make It will give you the kind of resilience that doesn’t just help you survive hardship, but helps you bounce back even stronger.”—Levi Lusko, lead pastor of Fresh Life Church and bestselling author

Most of us are just trying to get through the next twenty-four hours . . . let alone being ready to deal with the stress, anxiety, and suffering that arise when least expected.

But it’s possible to move from fear and worry to the positive anticipation life should hold. See, there’s a way to survive the maddening chaos of this world, but it is only found in Jesus.

Pastor and author Daniel Fusco discovered this the hard way. He’s experienced his share of loss, including the death of loved ones. Through diving into the Bible and deep times of prayer and reflection, Daniel has found a new closeness to Jesus and uncovered a way of resilience, perseverance, and grit.

Jesus never promised a life of ease. He promised to be with us through everything. God can create good from all things, leading us into His promise of abundant life. We can persevere in hope. Right here. Right now.

You can persevere in God’s promise. Because you’re gonna make it.

This is my first Daniel Fusco book to read, and I didn't know what to expect, but I loaded it into my trusty Kindle and opened the page. My first impression was, wow. Not because the first few words of Fusco's book were astounding, (though they were very good) but because his writer's voice was so conversational. It was like he was sitting across the table from me, just having a nice chat and telling me a story from his past. The book continues in this conversational prose throughout. I found reading Fusco's book very comforting as if he and I were becoming friends and he was encouraging me through God's word to find peace and hope in fostering resilience as I work through life's changes.

Now, I love reading my bible, but I can't always say I love reading biblical nonfiction. Depending on the topic, I can often find them insightful but dry, almost mind numbing and I have to work at staying focused and purposeful when reading and studying. Yet Fusco's book, "You're Gonna Make It," didn't feel that way at all. He does a good job of incorporating personal accounts, pop culture references (to keep it interesting), biblical teachings and pastoral explanations. I continually felt encouraged and fed as I read. I actually spent a few nights reading it in bed and staying up a little too late because I didn't want to put it down, I just had to get to the end of the chapter. This never happens for me when I read nonfiction, so that is a true endorsement!

Anyone going through various trials will be hooked by this book title. I was no different. The author speaks at great length to resilience, grit, hope, and faith all within a Biblical context. There were a lot of reminders to put my trust and hope in the Lord to get through the really hard times. Two of the things that, in particular, resonated with me were the topics of how important it is to be an encouragement and servant to others even while going through hard times. The author's writing style is conversational and funny at times.

There were some exceptions to the book that I did not like. For example, there was a quote at the beginning of a chapter from the Harry Potter's series, there was a passing reference to Enneagram/Myers Briggs, and a reference to suffering in Buddhism's Four Noble Truths (that, the author points out in a hyperlinked note, is "not really Buddha's truth in the first place"). There were also some passing references to lyrics from musical bands. I think the author is trying to find common ground with people and so uses these reference points.

Overall, I thought the book was good and uplifting.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy from NetGalley (WaterBrook and Multnomah). All opinions and thoughts are my own.

I received this book as part of a book launch team for free in exchange for an honest review.
Life has a way of getting overwhelming. Jobs, family, friends, international pandemics or even just a case of your favourite snack being discontinued it can start to add up until you feel like you're going to blow. Pastor Daniel Fusco has had some moments in his life where he felt like it was too much to bear (remember when twinkies were taken off the shelves?) but he has learned the one surefire way to get through any trial in life: leaning on God and using his Word to overcome any obstacles. With some lighthearted anecdotes and serious examples, he shares multiple scriptures that can help you through anything life throws at you.
I saw Pastor Fusco speak on Hour of Power once and appreciated his speaking style, so when an opportunity to read his book came along I jumped at the chance. It didn't disappoint. He has a sense of humour that translates well on the page, and he included footnotes that included both serious notes and jokes he wanted to share. I haven't read any of his other books but I would definitely consider them now, and would recommend him to anyone who asked.

In his book You’re Gonna Make It, Daniel Fusco walks through what it looks like to unlock resilience and hold onto hope in the middle of suffering, worry, stress, and difficult circumstances. Using Scriptures like the book of Job, Isaiah 40:31, and some of the Psalms, Fusco reminds his readers that the Lord can become the source of our hope and strength during our greatest times of uncertainty and suffering if we look “upward, inward, and outward.” In fact, hope is found in the person who embodies hope and that person is Jesus Christ. If we choose to trust him through our troubles, we will find our resilience and bear fruit through them. This book has the same hope and grit that the author encourages his audience to find. Compelling and powerful, this is a book that any Christian would find encouragement from reading, especially in a post-pandemic world.

YOU'RE GONNA MAKE IT - Daniel Fusco

WOW, what a book. A book/study on making it thru life and building a resilient spirit. Pastor Fusco not only gives examples and stories but also a road map to take what is necessary to get there. I was sent this book to my Kindle for the purpose of review.

I enjoyed the book immensely and found many suggestions to build a life when it seemingly is stuck in the wrong direction. Mr. Fusco gives true stories and a time of reflection and application to help on your journey to building a spirit that can Make It.

His pastors heart is evident in compassion but also in determination help find your path that God has for you. It is a tremendous faith builder and gives confidence which most of us lack.

As a paraplegic I can identify with the need to know God and allow Him to build my character thru challenges. Therefore, I highly recommend this book.

"It doesn't matter whether our faith is the size of a tiny little mustard seed or a huge vat of mustard from Costco..."

Such is the tone of this book. A little bit witty, very encouraging, and down to earth. Fusco knows that so many people right now are struggling with the storms of life. The 2020s haven't been pretty so far, and there doesn't appear to be an end in sight. Faith is something we're running low on in this country, and sometimes it just takes a kind word of encouragement to get your neighbor through the day. That's what this book is -- a warm blanket and a reminder that, while we may not see the big picture, the father does. Consider his words -- "Picture the parents of a kid who has gone off to college. While the kid is studying and partying and doing whatever college kids do, what are the parents doing? Thinking of their kid. Pretty much always."

In these days post pandemic, many people are having problems calming down and finding purpose. This author has planted many Crossroad churches, the one he is pastoring right now is in Vancouver Washington. I can’t say I am drawn to the mega churches, I prefer one 800 to 1000 and not too small.
This book will guide you through life sticky passages, I would say it is written more for those with young families and under 50. He lays out good Biblical principles and tells stories on her own family that will show he is human and understand where you are coming from. Give him a try if you are discouraged. Most chapters have discussion questions. One of the comment he uses with his children is the comment 1, 2, 3, look at me., to get them to stop and pay attention right now. That is very good advice. Told with a light touch and sense of humor.

You're Gonna Make It by Daniel Fusco declares that resilience is the key to "making it". He says that resilience is fueled by hope and grit. Each chapter provides a detailed explanation of Who gives us hope and how we develop grit through His enabling power. Chapters I especially resonated with include: Unlocking Resilience, The Context for Renewal, Hope Has a Name, and Steady Under Stress. Daniel writes in a clear, easily understood style that makes reading this book a pleasure.

An encouraging book at a time when we all have been trying to get back up from the world of 2020 and Covid. Sharing stories from those around him and giving great suggestions on how to get back up and keep going was helpful.

I recommend this book.

Having hit most of the major stressors from health , family issues to moving, I was under a great deal of stress, and worry was my companion. Interesting read. Honest, applicable, and most of all Biblical. A good reminder that we are God's children, and that no matter what we go thru in life God will see us thru.

Have you been going through a hard time? Lately, it seems like we all have thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. But no matter what you're struggling with, Daniel Fusco's book You're Gonna Make It is a reminder that we already have what we need to find our way to the other side of tribulations.

We have God.

And more specifically, hope and faith in God.

Not gonna lie, I took a lot of notes while reading this book, but it's definitely a book that requires you to put forth some effort and actually put what Fusco writes into practice. It takes work to have hope in God and trust in Him, and most of the time, we just try to go it on our own! But we don't have to.

It's okay for you to not like what you're going through! God never promised us an easy life. But if you have hope, faith, and grit (and this book), you will come out better on the other side.

At the end of most chapters, you'll find discussion questions to take you further into your personal experiences. Sometimes there are even activities for you to do that will help bring you closer to God and see something positive in your suffering.

You're Gonna Make It is published by Waterbrook Press and is available to purchase now. I received a free e-book in exchange for this review.
