So Much Snow

Rate this book
A beautifully illustrated, rollicking read-aloud about forest animals who are caught—literally up to their ears and antlers—in a snowstorm.

On Monday, it starts to snow.
Silent swirling.
How high will it go?

Follow seven forest creatures, from a tiny mouse to a giant moose, as they hunker down in a snowstorm. As the week progresses, the snow piles up and up--even past Moose's antlers!

On Sunday, the sun starts to melt the snow, and it seems that, as the next week passes and it grows sunnier, spring has finally sprung. But wait...is that more snow?! This cumulative picture book is at once beautiful and lyrical and playful and joyful, with charming illustrations by a highly acclaimed illustrator.

This is a cute picture book that shows the progression through a snowfall and the subsequent melt, featuring cute animals interacting with the snow. After seven days of snow covering the landscape, the snowfall melts and the animals are revealed in reverse order. Everything looks green again, but then... there's a surprise.

The illustrations are cute, and the text, while spare, works as a nice accompaniment.

Definitely a winner for those looking for books about the seasons and/or cute animals.

The illustrations are utterly charming and it's a pleasant read. I can see the appeal for little ones who will enjoy seeing the snow pile higher and higher and then begin to melt bit by bit -- animals reappearing along the way. Read it for the lovely, whimsical illustrations. The ending is a bit peculiar as I'm not sure if the bear is misinterpreting falling tree blossoms as snow or if there is actually a snowfall immediately after spring bursts out. I imagine this might be puzzling for young ones still making sense of the seasons if they do not live in an area where there can be snowfalls in the spring.

The charm of this book is entirely in the illustrations. There is a sweet sense of humor to the pictures as the forest animals are gradually lost in a world of snow, and the rabbit is just about the cutest one I can imagine.

Good heavens, these illustrations had me squee-ing with their adorableness. So many plump, fluffy, wide-eyed forest creatures! AND I loved the text too, so double win! The text goes through the days of the week, first with the snow accumulating, and then with it melting, with repeated phrases throughout. I can see a lot of ways this would be an effective read-aloud.

Lyrical text and beautiful paintings come together perfectly in this joyful ode to the cycle of snow. As the snow falls for seven days, animals of increasing size, starting with a tiny mouse and progressing to a bear, confront a world blanketed in snow and wonder how high it will go. The animals slowly emerge over the following seven days as the snow melts, revealing a green, budding world. Readers will enjoy this gentle book of discovery and connect the animals actions to their own experiences of snow.

SO MUCH SNOW by Kristen Schroeder and Sarah Jacoby is a fun and charming read aloud. As we follow seven forest creatures, from a tiny mouse, little fox to bears and giant moose. This may not be the snow book you were looking for - I would recommend this book if you are looking for a late winter - early spring book when snow is still possible. It's an adorable days of the week book, too. Students might relate to the feeling of being sick of snow and ready for the warmer days ahead.

This rhyming picture book cleverly teaches kids the days of the week and a bit about how weather comes and goes, leading into seasons. I like the pattern of snowing, snowing, snowing then melting, melting, melting--and a great, surprise ending! Throughout, the lovely art engages readers with its adorable animals.

I saw this at my book fair and just fell in love. I adore the illustrations and I think I might add it to my Mock Caldecott for my kinders. The story is very simple and I don’t know that it will hold the interest of older students, but the repetition should make it a delight for younger kiddos.

This picture book follows a group of woodland creatures who celebrate as snow falls, each wondering, “How high will it go?” Kristen Schroeder’s lyrical and layered text includes an introduction to the days of the week, animals from small to large, circular storytelling structure, and repetition. She expertly weaves a story whose arc rises gently and then descends to a conclusion that will have readers begging to read the book again and again. Sarah Jacoby’s darling, watercolor illustrations capture the magic of snowfall and the joyful expressions of the animal characters as they frolic in the snow. I have a soft spot for bunnies, illustrated end papers, and surprise “undies” covers under the dust jacket, and this book ticks all those boxes, and then some. A perfect read aloud for a group or for a cozy lap-read by the fire, SO MUCH SNOW is a must for your bookshelf!

A fun animal-centered romp in the snow that builds from Monday to Sunday and then melts from Monday to Sunday. With a repeating refrain, fun rhyming language, and gorgeous illustrations, this will be a joyful read-aloud for laps or classrooms and story hours.

While there are many picture books describing the delights of snow, even when it arrives late in the winter season or early in spring, not many of them tell stories about how the animals in the great outdoors react to snowfall. This one--3.5 in my book--does so in a charming way. Not only does the text count down the days of the week from Monday to Sunday twice as the snow fills the landscape and then again as it starts to melt and reveal the tender greenery nestled beneath those snowy mounds, but the text and illustrations play peek-a-boo with readers as the animals that have taken shelter during the snowstorm venture out, one by one, once the snow is disappearing. Repetitive language and the glee of the animals as they watch those first flakes appear and then begin to pile up, making it possible for a fox to frolic on an icy mound, add to this picture book's delights and the story's unique perspective, told through the use of "we" and "I," especially since readers will feel a kinship with the animals, including a mouse, a rabbit, and a bear, among others. The use of poetic language adds to the sense of wonder and the surprise that the snow might not be finished after all. The illustrations, created with watercolors, chalky pastels, and Photoshop, are filled with soft colors that highlight the snowfall and then the freshness of spring being just around the corner. Maybe.

Anything can change in an instant on a winter’s day.

The repetition was well done. I found it soothing to repeat the same themes and even some of the same words in multiple scenes. It was almost like listening to a lullaby about characters who might temporarily be in a little danger but who you somehow just know will live happily ever by the end. I’ll leave it up to other readers to figure out if that prediction of mine was correct!

I would have liked to see more attention paid to developing the storyline. The basic outline of it was there, but Ms. Schroeder could have done so much more with her ideas about what wild animals think of snowstorms and how they survive in them. I would have happily given this a higher rating if those questions had been better answered.

With that being said, I enjoyed the gentleness of this story. The characters were playful creatures who adored the first day or two of the storm. Seeing them invent new games to play as more snow kept falling made me wonder what they’d come up with next. It was a delight to watch them explore their winter wonderland and figure out how to deal with more snow than they were expecting.

So Much Snow was a peaceful look at late winter in the woods.

SO MUCH SNOW is a cute picture book about the days of the week and weather. The story begins on Monday with some snow. As the days of the week continue, the snow does too. The next Monday, the sun comes out and the snow begins to melt. As the animals come out and the snow goes away, it seems like spring may be coming. That is, until Sunday - and more snow!

What I loved: This is a simple story that helps to teach children about the days of the week and a bit about weather. The book walks through the days of the week with more and more snow, as the reader says hello to different animals who are coming out. In the second week, the snow thaws with other animals coming out to say hello. It seems like spring is coming until it is not - and there is still more snow. The illustrations are simple and bring the animals to life along with the weather.

Final verdict: SO MUCH SNOW is a cute and simple picture book that introduces the days of the week to young readers.

SO MUCH SNOW combines soft illustrations with simple and lively text to show the last big snowfall of winter in a forest.

As snow falls for seven days, forest animals from a mouse to a moose each wonders: “How high will it go?”

Artist Sarah Jacoby used watercolors, chalky pastels, and Photoshop to create a forest disappearing under an increasing amount of snow, and then reappearing with touches of spring as the snow melts.

Author Kristen Schroeder’s active text (flakes floating, drifts dancing) is scattered across the pages, including placed along the curve of a snowdrift and atop a huge mound of snow.

Kids will enjoy comparing the animals between the winter and spring scenes, such as a fox hopping over a pile of snow and standing before a big puddle.
For ages 3-7.

What a beautiful pairing of words and illustrations! Schroeder's text invites readers in by posing the question: - How high will it go? - and introduces various forest animals as they welcome the snow fall. And then there is a wonderful turn of events as the air warms and the snow melts and we get a wonderful second refrain in the book - Oh! Hello! - as we discover the gorgeously created forest animals reappearing as the snow melts. This is a beautiful and creative book on a subject that, of course, has been depicted often in children's books. Schroeder and Jacoby have created a wonderful new addition to this magical time of year.

This book was the loveliest surprise! So simple, calming and beautiful. So snow-full!
From snowfall's crescendo to its melting away again; from the discovery of a host of woodland creatures to the snow's return, this is a lovely ode to Mother Nature's (sometimes surprising) rhythms and returns.
Schroeder's text is delicate and playful as a snowflake, and Jacoby's art is softly textured with glowing hues.
I see Eric Carle & Leo Lionni fans adoring this book--I certainly do. A modern classic for sure.

I really enjoyed SO MUCH SNOW. It's a gentle season book *which I love!* Being a Children's Librarian and a fellow kidlit writer, I read a LOT of books, especially picture books. This story had great pacing and a nice smooth easy to read out loud text- perfect for storytime! The illustrations were adorable (I especially love the leaping fox!) This book also had some subtle but useful teaching hooks: teaching the days of the week, inspiring curiosity and participating by usage of questions to involve little readers, and changing seasons. All in all, a wonderful wintery-spring story!

Kristen Schroeder's book about snow is cleverly structured around the days of the week as the reader sees in Sarah Jacoby's beautiful illustrations the snow mounts up for seven straight days and then watch as the snow starts to melt away in the next seven days. This would be a great mentor text to share with young writers on how to structure similar cyclical stories. The patterned and poetic makes the book very accessible for all readers and an easy book to divide up parts and share together. The book would be a great addition to any classroom or home collection.

As a Wisconsinite, this book hits all the marks! I immediately added this book to my list to read to our pre-K kids in library. Simplistic and beautiful, So Much Snow follows all of our forest friends as the snow begins to fall and take over, a feeling we know all too well. This book is a great winter read but also a great book for the transition between winter and spring (which seems to last for 3 months). I love the illustrations of the animals at play and exploring their surroundings.

A must-add to any picture books shelf!

A perfect read aloud - in any season!
Lovely language and gently beautiful illustrations create an immersive experience for readers of all ages as the snow grows deeper day by day, covering the landscape and a variety of animals in brilliant white drifts. As the week turns, weather warms, and the snow begins to clear away, revealing happy creatures and spring-ready landscapes. A particularly perfect read aloud for preschool and kindergarten, as it reinforces days of the week and concepts of more and less while providing engaging and enchanting images of animals and nature!

So Much Snow is a beautiful celebration of changing seasons. Doubling as a days-of-the-week story, snow builds over Monday, Tuesday and the rest of the week. Kristen Schroeder’s gentle, lyrical text is a perfect match for Sarah Jacoby’s tender watercolors that move from pastels to vibrant colors as the weather changes. This is the perfect read for the first snow of the year—and for every snowy day! Be sure to have a warm blanket on hand as you read this story made for snuggling.
