Trust No One (Devlin & Falco #1) by Debra Webb

I'm a big fan of police procedurals so I have been excited to start this new series. In Trust No One (and believe me, in this story, you can trust NO one!) Detective Kerri Devlin has a brand new partner, a big homicide case, a thirteen year old daughter who is aggressively shutting her out, and an ex husband who is threatening to take her daughter away. On top of it all, Devlin is a "by the book" detective while her new partner, Detective Luke Falco, is presented as oil to her water...they are sure to have issues with their approach to their jobs.

One of the pillars of the community has been murdered, along with a house guest, and the pregnant wife is missing. As Devlin and Falco investigate the murders, the trail becomes tangled with more important players, more pillars of the community and some seedy underbelly of the city types. Nothing is as it seems and everyone seems to have secrets.

I already have the second book and I plan to read it soon even though I did not connect well with this first offering. We seem to be following dozens of characters, each hiding one or more things. It's like each chapter was a mini cliffhanger as we learn that someone is holding another secret from everyone, including us. Surely there can't be that many murderers and potential murderers with direct ties to this case but apparently so, as the bodies pile up. Everyone connected to the dead man has something to hide and to confound it all, convoluting as it is, Devlin's family and close friend are messed up in this murderous muck, also.

Coincidences, luck, and improbability made for some major eye rollers for me. I tend to think about what is happening in a story and so much that happens doesn't bear inspection. I won't detail the reasons for my skepticism on a lot of points because it would give the story away. I'm hoping that the next book won't be such a "throw in the kitchen sink" of characters and events.

About Devlin and Falco as mismatched partners...really, all it takes is frequent bonding over pizza and they seem to be good to go. I suspect the next book might give us some bedtime bonding but I could be wrong. If there are going to be more books, I could see they will take more time to warm up. The duo has some really corny dialogue but then so did the other characters.

I received this book free through Amazon's First Reads, formerly Kindle First. Frequently there is nothing available through Kindle First which interests me. However the description of this one sounded interesting and the title appealed to me. When I was an Intelligence analyst, "Trust No One" was a mantra with our unit. It was number one followed closely by, "Admit nothing. Deny everything" and " Everyone has secrets." All of which seem to fit this novel and its characters very well.

Chapter one is the shocker, the hook to pull readers in. Chapter two begins ten days earlier. It and chapter three are primarily police procedurals. After that, the main story line begins to combine police procedural with mystery and quite a bit of confused personal relationships and dark secrets. Well before the 25% mark the reader learns a part of the mystery but without details so there are still mysteries and under currents to hold a reader's interest.

I have read reviews of this novel which complained of family and personal relationships to the investigation which are too unbelievable or too coincidental. I would probably agree except that such things do happen particularly in the small world of the moneyed and social elites in a relatively small city. I once had an investigation which directly or indirectly involved a number of people whom I had known all my life, friends, acquaintances, my mother - it began to seem that every time I turned over a leaf there was someone else I knew or with whom I was at least indirectly associated. A very strange experience.

Exciting and well written but too much family drama and angst. I admit that I skimmed a lot of that. More concentration on the mystery and police work and less detail of peripheral family relationships would have made this five stars in my opinion.

Quite a lot of strong language, adultery and sexual activity. Fortunately most of that activity is not explicit.

Once the author moved on for the cheesy dialogue and introspection early in the book it got much better. Detective Kerri Devlin and her brand new partner Detective Luke Falco of the Birmingham, Alabama, PD get themselves a double homicide in a posh neighbourhood. Ben Abbott and his mother-in-law have been killed in their lavish home. Ben’s pregnant wife, Sela, is missing.

There is not much to go on. Everyone they question is of the entitled class and seems to be holding back information. And as soon as they find a person of interest with something to tell them, that person ends up dead too. It feels like someone is ‘cleaning up’ but who and why? Then it starts to get very personal for Devlin as friends and family are drawn into this web of conspiracy and cover up. Sela Abbott is still missing but maybe she should be considered a suspect rather than a victim. But make no assumptions in this twisty tale. This book was good and convoluted and I enjoyed it a lot, better, in fact, than some of Webb’s other books because there was no lame romance involved.

Amazon Prime First Read -July ‘20.

A double homicide, a missing wife in Birmingham Alabama is the first investigation for the newly created team of Devlin and Falco. This leads them deep into the secrets of the city’s elite and the search for the truth becomes deeply personal fro Devlin. This is a clever, twisty, conspiracy thriller which I enjoyed. It’s a tad convoluted at times hence 4 not 5 stars but apart from that it’s a decent read. I like the two main characters and they compliment each other well and I’ll definitely want to read more featuring this duo.

A 400+ page dialog-based police procedural with undeveloped main characters. The writing is clunky at times, and has so much unnecessary dialog, it is all "telling" with no "showing." The pacing is incredibly slow, with a convoluted and unoriginal plot. There are around 29 witnesses to be interviewed, you forget who is who. This is the first of her novels I have read, and I will not read any more.

Oh Amazon free reads - occasionally I stumble across a gem, but most of the time - as in this case - these books are clunkers.
This was such a stereotypical detective book. The story itself - powerful men doing shady things and never getting caught because of their position in society; a woman spending years plotting incredibly elaborate revenge and (apparently easily) setting up the life she needs to enact that revenge; a detective who walked the fine line between cop and criminal, and has a mysterious (literally redacted) past that he doesn't like to talk about - and who refuses to follow the establishment rules; two detectives who don't give a damn about what their superiors tell them, and pursue a case despite the potential personal ramifications - was all pretty much one cliche after another.
And the writing itself was hackneyed - the word "damn" was in every third sentence.
And the fact that literally every single family member of the protagonist was just coincidentally involved in the case... really?
Two stars because I read the whole thing and while I had pretty much figured out the plot line, I still wanted to see how everything would wrap up. But oof - my eyes sockets hurt from all the rolling around in there.

Here's an excerpt (which I just found by literally opening the book to any page - I didn't highlight this or bookmark the page. I'm sure there are worse examples). If you find this writing appealing or even ok, then for sure, you should read the book. If it makes you roll your eyes right up out of your head, then maybe look for a different potboiler.

"She told herself to stay out of personal territory. But she couldn't do it. He was right. It was late. It was was Sunday. Well past time to go home, and she was suddenly sick of rehashing the disjointed fragments they had raked together.
'Why did you give everything up, Falco?'
He held her gaze for three seconds... five seconds... ten. By the time he spoke, she had decided he wasn't going to answer.
'Because I wasn't fit to be a part of it.'
Somehow this idea of selflessness got to her. Made her want to know things. Exhaustion was really playing with her tonight. 'Why weren't you fit? Because your father abused you?'
'That was part of it.' He closed his eyes for a moment before he opened them again. 'I was undercover for a long time. It was my thing. I was really, really good at it. But I had to go deeper and deeper to get what we needed.' He shrugged. "I ended up in too deep. Drugs became a part of who I was. I...' He exhaled a big breath. "I became like them. I lived, I breathed, I killed... just like them.'
Surprise, regret, sympathy all seared through her so quickly her heart couldn't pound fast enough to catch up. 'But you came through in the end.' She was certain of it. He wouldn't be sitting here otherwise. 'Right?'"

I'm already a fan of Debra Webb, love her Undertaker's Daughter series, so I was excited to get an early look at her newest series involving detectives Devlin and Falco. Set in Birmingham, AL, Trust No One revolves around a multiple murder case with connections to the city's powerful elite as well as having deep reaching tentacles into the past. Devlin and Falco are an interesting partnership, one straight-laced and the other just emerging from years undercover, but their personalities play well off of each other, strengths to weaknesses, and you know that they will make for good reading in the future. There was just enough familiar introduction and past revelations so that we, the readers, could better know why the detectives reacted as they did in certain situations. Yes, this was and will be a good detective series, one a I highly recommend and look forward to reading more of in the future.

Well, this book was certainly a pleasant surprise! I’ve never read a Debra Webb book before, so I didn’t know what to expect. The book is billed as the double homicide of Daniel Webb and his mother-in-law, and the disappearance of his pregnant wife Sela. The investigation is led by harried Detective Kerri Devlin whose former partner and mentor has retired, and now she’s been saddled with a new partner, rebel Detective Luke Falco. The pressure is great to solve this case and to make matters worse, her manipulative ex-husband wants custody of their thirteen-year-old daughter Tori.

The suspects begin to pile up, including a number of high-profile local citizens who have many secrets to protect. In addition, her own niece Amelia goes missing and it seems she is attached to the case as well. As the case intensifies, Devlin must decide who to trust. Will her new partner prove to be trustworthy?

The first part of this book was a slow build, mostly character building, and there were a lot of characters, so many that I had trouble keeping them straight at times. Around the halfway mark it really picked up the pace and I was hooked up until the climatic end. I will be checking out her backlist for sure. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I gave it four stars.

Wow! I had trouble putting this book down. The first scene begins with an altercation between Detective Kerri Devlin and an assailant that ends with Kerri killing the unknown man. We don't find out the particulars until near the end of the book. What happens between those two points is a lot.
Kerri's old partner has retired and she has a new one, Detective Luke Falco, and he has a reputation presiding him, not a great one. As the two work their first case, Falco earns Kerri's respect. They are called to a double murder and missing pregnant woman in a wealthy part of town. There are not many clues to go on and they could have a missing wife who murdered her husband and mother or was abducted. Only no ransom has been called for to the husband's family. This is a mystery involving some very powerful people, movers and shakers, who will stop at nothing to get what they want and maintain their status and power, including covering up those mishaps. But the current situation is apparently related to an event from long ago. People have secrets and are not who they appear to be. Great mystery that is unraveled one small layer at a time but with costs that you will want someone to pay for.

In this book, as in every city across America, the wealthy and the politically connected get away with stuff that no one else could. So unweaving the web of lies and coverups was the best part of this book. Devlin and Falco are new partners, but learn to work together well quite quickly. Not all of the turns the case takes are believable, as Devlin (and her family/friends) is personally connected to too much of the case.

I grew bored with Devlin's angst about her teenage daughter, she seemed irrational where her ex-husband was concerned. I have my own teenage daughters, I don't want to read about someone else's bratty one. The author tried to give Falco some mysterious/sad backstory, but it was vague and uninteresting.

I might have rated this a little higher had it not been for Devlin's actions at the end, I find it hard to believe any honest detective would act as she did.

Neabejotinai mano stiliaus detektyvas 😍 Labai patiko.

A new detective series with great promise.

Not quite a four-star read but certainly worth the time. Devlin & Falco are an intriguing duo and I look forward to discovering more about Falco’s hidden past.

The dialogue had a try-hard, cheesy feel to it at the beginning but progressed to a more realistic tone as the book went on. The plot is unnecessarily convoluted in places but again the creases started to work their way out in the second half.

Excellent potential.

Detective Kerri Devlin and her new partner Detective Falco are called on to investigate a double homicide. A man and his mother-in-law were murdered in their home. But where is the pregnant wife? Is she a victim ... or should she be a suspect?

BOOK BLURB: But just as answers come into view, the case twists, expands, and slithers into Devlin’s personal life. There’s a much more sinister game at work, one she doesn’t even know she’s playing—and she must unravel the truth once and for all to stop the killer before she loses everything.

This is a tightly woven plot surrounding well-developed characters. I really enjoyed how the personal is blended with the professional lives of the main characters. The action starts on the first page and doesn't let up until the very end. It held a suspenseful steady pace amid lies and secrets that make this a real page turner.

Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Amazon Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Another riveting page turner by the master Debra Webb.

I just finished last night and I’m still mulling it all over. I have to say that one characters fate as left me feeling some kind of way...

Interesting characters, an extremely dark and twisted plot with so many bad guys. Conspiracy, political chicanery and murder...so much murder. And when pasts begin to be unearthed, well let’s say the present is truly not what it seems. All this while Detective Devlin deals with her daughter and maneuvering being divorced and a cop. I always love this authors strong women characters.

Thanks so much for the opportunity to read early! This author always takes me on a wild journey. I’m looking forward to what’s next for Detectives Falco & Devlin.

Boy, what a collection of psychologically damaged and downright dangerous characters! The only two worth saving for another go-round are lead characters, Birmingham, Major Investigation Division detectives Kerri Devlin and her new partner Luke Falco. And to be clear, they've got their own background baggage (plus Kerri is in the midst of fighting with her ex-husband for the love, and custody, of their daughter), so even they don't get a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Needless to say, not all the characters make it past this book except Devlin and Falco - this is, after all, the first book in what I presume will be a series. Despite (or maybe because of) their flaws - I dare you to mention any series character who doesn't have any - I enjoyed my first "meeting" with them both and look forward to their next adventure. This one begins in the middle, sort of, with what I'll call a fatal blunder on Devlin's part. Backpedal to 10 days earlier, when she reluctantly meets Falco, who has a reputation for being incorrigible. Her boss makes it clear she's stuck with him, though - at least for the time being.

They're called to a grisly murder scene where they find two bodies; a woman known to be living there is missing. Turns out the dead man is filthy rich and from one of the most politically powerful families in Alabama. As the investigation progresses - with precious little to go on at first - we meet Devlin's sister Diana, her husband and daughter, their mutual friend Jen, and Devlin's daughter (the latter a teenager who's caught up in her parents' divorce and is playing it for all it's worth). We also see what's happening from the perspectives of other rich folks, including the dead man's parents and other of the city's power players. Not surprisingly, at some point, all become suspects.

Eventually, the clues begin to form patterns that lead to the culprit's identity. But as that happens and the bodies pile up, Devlin and Falco encounter unexpected obstacles as well as information that could totally upend - or maybe even end - Devlin's own life. All in all, it's the beginning of a solid series - and a great choice for an Amazon Prime Reads monthly offering.

I found a new series while waiting for Melinda Leigh to come out with another story about Bree Taggert. I really enjoyed the start of Kerri Devlin’s and Luke Falco’s work relationship. They were detectives for the Birmingham, Alabama police force and in charge of a double murder with a missing person.

If she didn’t have enough on her plate with a new partner and a big name case, Kerri’s moody 13-year-old daughter and her obnoxious ex-husband filled her remaining hours.

The investigation itself covered eleven days. Ms. Webb started with day 11 which threw me for a loop. After that, she stepped back to the morning of the murders when the discovery of clues was set in motion.

I soon became immersed in good old boy politics, situations rife with the thought to CYA and a bit of necessary melodrama. Yes, I said necessary melodrama, for once. Danger escalated and the big question was who could you Kerri trust?

Lastly, I was reminded of the phrase, what goes around, comes around. Kudos to Ms. Webb for Trust No One. I finished it in less than 48 hours.

I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.

This book starts extremely well, with our main character, evidentially a police officer killing someone she shouldn't out of impassioned anger and after this prologue, we are thrown into seeing Devlin and Falco become partners ten days prior to this event just as they investigate a double murder. The title of this book is apt, trust no one. Everyone has a secret, even those you wish didn't. Kerri Devlin has to deal with this case intersecting with her personal life as they dig deeper and deeper into the events surrounding these murders and discover they are also searching for one of the victim's missing pregnant wife.

I thought I was going to adore this book. It had good ratings, it was well hyped and I love crime books. Why wouldn't I love it? Instead of a nail-biting thriller, I got a 400+ page book filled with dialogue I didn't care about and characters I didn't feel any connection to. The book wasn't bad. It was just too long for what I felt we got out of each chapter. The characters were a little bland, each being quite self-centred in their approach to their own personal drama and there was also far too many of them. I found myself mixing up who was going through what. I couldn't remember was Diana Kerri's sister, was it, Jen, why did they all care about Amelia more than they cared about Tori etc. I found Tori a little intolerable though so maybe that's why.

Naujas detektyvinis romanas?

Nepaisant to, knyga man skaitėsi gana greitai, nuobodžiauti smarkiai taip pat neteko, tačiau mano lūkesčių ši knyga nepateisino.

If Debra Webb is the author, I want to read the book. However, somehow this book got archived before I downloaded on NetGalley. But I really wanted to read it and was planning on purchasing it for review. When I went on Amazon, I discovered that it is on Kindle Unlimited as an ebook and an audiobook. To say that I was pleased is an understatement.

Daniel Abbott and his mother-in-law have been shot to death. and Daniel's wife is missing. Was she the killer, and if she is, then where has she disappeared to? Detective Kerri Devlin has been assigned the case at a time that her life is upside down. She is struggling with her cheating ex-husband and also having difficulties with her daughter, Victoria. They are always knocking heads and that is where Kerri needs to focus her attention right now. However, that is just not possible. She must find the missing Mrs. Abbott and find out who is responsible for the murders.

Kerri's partner is detective Luke Falco. The two turn over every stone possible in order to work the case. As they do so they find that some of the upper echelon in Birmingham have secrets and these secrets are multilayered. How is the apparent corruption tied in with the murders? Will they ever find Mrs. Abbott alive, or will they soon find her body?

What a thrilling book! It was full of twists and turns and ended up getting very close to Kerri's personal life. Something is going on and whatever it is, the reach is very far. Kerri and Falco must work feverishly hard to solve this case.

This thrilling story lays the groundwork for what will no doubt be an exciting series. As Kerri and Falco work together, we learn what makes them tick, learns snippets of their pasts and easily see how well they are paired together. Oddly enough I couldn't help but think of early Benson and Stabler from Law & Order: SVU. I love it when partners can read each other and we definitely get to see this in Trust No One.

This makes the seventh book I have read by Webb and I definitely got what I was looking for, a very well-written story with compelling characters and an exciting storyline. I am looking forward to continuing this new series with Gone Too Far, set for release in April. I will be stalking NetGalley for an early release read. And, as time permits, I will reading books from Webb's backlist.

Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I'm rounding up on the stars because some of my issues with the book may just be personal preferences. I chose this book with no prior knowledge of the either the author or the series. I was disappointed in the book. Although it has an interesting main story line, the writing tries too hard. Beyond the typical over-use of the characters' names in every sentence, there are strange word choices and over-the-top descriptions that are only a step or two above a Harlequin Romance.
"The urge simmered in the deepest part of her soul."
"The organ throbbed in her chest."
"She wouldn't allow a wrinkle to settle on her perfect face or an extra ounce to settle on her perfect body."
"Jen swallowed the bile rising in her throat even as she shoved a forkful of salad into her mouth." (There's an image for you!! How the heck do you swallow if your mouth is wide open?)
At one point, two characters make ice cream sundaes. This required one of the characters to ransack the bedroom of the children who live in the house to find the M&Ms. Once they have the sundaes made, one of the characters "...spoons the gooey combination into her mouth. She moaned." This was followed by a discussion of how this character was going to allow herself to get fat because she was having her first ice cream in 20 years. Really?
Every character fits in some stereotype: The perfect wife and mother, the sulky, rebellious teenager, the hard-working devoted husband, the rich scoundrel, the criminal mastermind, the rogue cop, the bastard ex-husband, the beautiful mistress, the vengeful wife, the thug-for-hire, the crooked lawyer who erases every misdeed of his wealthy, spoiled, unscrupulous clients, the untouchable rich people, the behind-the-scenes source who can get any piece of information even if the cops can't... All very one dimensional.
The book starts at the end of the story and the entire thing is told from a "ten days earlier" standpoint. The book is overly long and bogged down with unnecessary description and events. By the time I got to the end, I had entirely forgotten that we were in flashback the entire time. The author does nothing to re-orient the reader. She picks up right where chapter 1 left off, so I had moment of confusion while I tried to figure out what was going on. Finally, I went back and re-read chapter 1 in order to pick up the threads.
Despite having lots of characters (most of whom die or get killed off) who all talk in riddles while making oblique references to their various shady pasts, this book is pretty transparent and all of the many "mysteries" are easily solvable.
There was nothing here that would encourage me to pick up another of this author's books.

I just could not get into this story-I tried I just could not get any interested generated. I did not for any of the characters. I do like knowing what the bad guys are doing or thinking-that is a bad turn off for me. I do something I rarely do but I skimmed thru the second half I just wanted to get done I will not be reading the second book in the series. I would not give this book a spin.

A page turner with a twist. There's no doubt about who set things in motion in this murder mystery. But its the "how" and "why" that keep you guessing. A real cat and mouse game. Detectives Devlin and Falco partner to figure out this tangled mystery. This is a start to a new series and I'll definitely be reading the next book. Can't wait.

Detectives Devlin and Falco, of the Birmingham, Alabama PD, are new partners and, suddenly thrust into the double murder investigation of one of the most prominent families in town. Devlin is already dealing with her daughter wanting to spend the summer in NY with her worthless ex-husband. The last thing she needs is a new partner that she doesn't know, much less trust!!
Falco has been deep undercover for another PD for 9 years and, has a history of now following the rules. There is something about Devlin though, that makes him trust her immediately. Good thing as this double murder and, possible kidnapping are just getting bigger and more involved by the day!
This book was slow to start but kept getting more interesting by the chapter and, the complex twits and turns are fascinating to figure out!
