India: A Cultural Voyage, by Udai Narain Tewari, is a breathless dash through India’s rich heritage and customs, a magnificent cultural tour de force exploring the contours of Indian religion, myths, traditions, and life from ancient times until independence.
Professor Tewari swiftly outlines the rich tapestry of Indian culture and geography and how it has shaped life and thought across the vast sub-continent. “From Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” he writes, “India is dotted with sacred streams and caves, places of pilgrimage, magnificent temples, and places for big seasonal cultural-religious gatherings.”
He scans so many aspects of Indian culture that sometimes the reader would prefer him to slow down and give us more explanation. Law, karma, religion, food, sex, caste, science, literature, grammar, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, dance, poetry, festivals, rivers, flowers, and even dance hand gestures are all touched on.
“Indian art and culture are a joint creation of the Dravidian and Aryan genius. a welding together of symbolic and representative, abstract and explicit language and thought,” he writes, exploring the importance of pilgrimage in welding India together,
He walks through the immense and varied history of India, putting Gandhi and Nehru on a pedestal toward the culmination of the book, which concludes around the independence period.
Special opprobrium is reserved for the exploitative period of British rule, although readers interested in that period of pillage would do better to consult William Dalrymple’s outstanding account of the East India Company’s rule in The Anarchy rather than rely on Professor Tewari’s somewhat flowery language.
Overall, a fascinating account of the astounding religious and cultural variety of India.
