The Minecraft Overworld can be a challenge--but it's nothing like the Nether! With upgraded tools, weapons, and armor, Maria, Mike, Kiera, Adam, and Rose are ready for their first trip into Minecraft's fiery, dangerous second dimension. Or are they? Readers will enjoy the suspense and adventure as the characters venture into another new environment. They'll also learn more Minecraft tips and tricks through the story and illustrations in this intriguing graphic novel.
As a non-player of Minecraft, this review is based on my perceived appeal to my library patrons.
The graphics in this unofficial Minecraft book seem to resemble any of the related merchandise and advertising for the game and does spout foe-names and other phrasing I have heard my students use. The friends in the story are working collaboratively to master levels and one of them, Rose, has a bit of a different goal from the others. When she declares that she may go off on her own and then later takes a tumble that sends her to a different location, she learns a valuable lesson in the benefits of cooperation and friendship. I would bet that this book will do well with the grade 2-4 crowd and with its short length, action driven plot, and sparse text, will also appeal to fans of the game who are more reluctant or struggling to read, even in older grades. No profanity or sexual content and violence is blood and gore free and not excessive.
