Nan Huai-Chin (simplified Chinese: 南怀瑾; traditional Chinese: 南懷瑾; pinyin: Nán Huáijǐn) (March 18, 1918 – September 29, 2012) was a spiritual teacher of contemporary China. He was the most eminent disciple of the lay Chan Buddhist teacher Yuan Huanxian, and received confirmation of his enlightenment by various masters of the Buddhist traditions. He was considered by many to be the major force in the revival of Chinese Buddhism. While Nan was regarded by many in China as one of the most influential Chan Buddhist teachers, he was little known outside the Chinese cultural sphere. Nan died at the age of 95 on Sept. 29th, 2012 in Suzhou, China.
This book gives some suggestions about meditation, yoga and inner calmness by the teachings of Huaijin Nan (Buddhism practitioner) to Peter Senge (lecturer at MIT).
1) Suggestions to reach inner calmness: - Focus on breathing. When our breath is calm, our thoughts and emotions are also calm. (Unsure about the direction of causality here, most likely from emotions to breath, but controlling breath can also help calming down.) 心息相依,心气合一 当你静下来了,呼吸会变得深长,慢慢地自然会成为丹田呼吸
2) Controlling our feeling and desires - Zen story: I control and master my desires, but desires master you, so I am your master's master. 你好好坐着,突然来了一个念头,你就跟着乱跑,你找不到原因 - Prioritize mastering our heart over secular success.
