Thank you to the author and She Writes Press for a review copy of this book. It really is not the book for me. I am about the age of the author and, while I can still learn, the points she made here are not the kinds of things I need to learn at this point in my life. This is really a YA book, giving many ideas and helpful suggestions to people who need to grow into themselves. Be brave. Stand up for what you believe in. The author's divisions with attendant suggestions did not add up for me. Many acts that she addressed in one section might be applicable to all. I felt she pushed the examples, forcing them into her divisions. She does give helpful suggestions for ways to learn about ourselves/admit the truth to ourselves but her life examples did not fit the arguments she makes. How many marriages? How many one-nighters? She really does not value her body very much. Not such a good example for others. And how many marriages did she rush into without really knowing her new love? She never seemed to learn the difference between real love and infatuation. And I never got the point of the title. She uses her voice every time she speaks up. And she tells us the changes that she brought about. In fact, it seemed like prideful boasting at times. Look at me!! I am thankful for the review copy but I did not get very much from this.

Memoirs are always interesting to me. In some, it’s a reflection of a person's life and what they’ve accomplished. In others, it’s a way to share but can be stuffy and difficult to read. Me, I didn’t find that in this author's book. I was engaged in her honesty. It’s not just her family's struggles or her wishes for her life at a young age. Instead, she lays it out there in a way that makes you feel compassion for her past. There’s also the feeling of hope that she shows in her wants for others to be happy at such a young age. She grew up in a time when there was so, so much change in the world. But a lot of it was centered in her community. Going through such a prolific time in history wasn’t easy. So reading about it from the standpoint of someone who was there or went through so many of the ups and downs helped me connect and understand on a different level. The author has lived a life even though those rollercoaster moments were filled with self discovery, strength, and raw emotion. Her message comes through strong with finding your voice. Such a positive reminder that growing and evolving are so important. The validation in finding who you are shines through. Wonderful read!

Truly LOVEEEEDD this book and Cynthia's transparency of her ups and downs in life. We often read and hear stories about the great moments in people's lives, but we don't usually hear stories about tragedies, disappointments, or mistakes. This autobiography shares both of the good and bad stories from Cynthia's life and explains how she pivots or keeps moving forward after these low points, giving us an example of how we can keep moving forward and make changes in our own lives when things might not go our way.
