While introducing Leda Morley, last of an ancient line of gatekeepers, to the ins and outs of her daemon-collecting work, Rachel Wilde encounters something far more dangerous than any daemon: a young boy who stands alone against an unseen yet terrifying enemy that has invaded his home--an inhuman creature who, hellbent on revenge for a minor slight, intends to harm the boy's oblivious family. Meanwhile, Leda's brother, Simon, is feeling left out of his maternal family legacy but is coping partly by helping Rachel's friend Bach--a previously homeless man with unusual mental abilities--get his life back on track.

In the midst of all of this, Bach unintentionally but serendipitously makes contact with a capable otherworldly being who, with great reluctance, agrees to help Bach and his friends take on the dangerous creature that's just become their problem to solve. Together, this group of unlikely allies must put aside their differences to save an innocent child, and his family, from a monster--before it's too late.

Rachel Wilde is a daemon hunter from the Arcana dimension.  On her last mission, she found the last gatekeeper, Leda and tried to stop a person from breaking down interdimensional barriers.  Along the way Rachel also acquired Bach, a human oracle whose insights had driven him to the brink of madness and a defective daemon who now roams her home.  Rachel's new assignments should be easy, she is showing Leda the ropes of what being a gatekeeper means and taking her on some fact finding missions.  However, one of Rachel's fact finding missions turns out to be something more than the typical daemon where a maligned being is torturing a local family for a mistake that a young boy made while discovering his new powers.  Meanwhile, Bach and Leda's brother, Simon are trying to get Bach's life together when they figure out that Bach may be able to help with Rachel's situation.

Blue Flame is another wonderful installment in the Daemon Collecting series.  I would highly recommend reading book one, Gatekeeper first to understand the dimensions and the characters.  I was so glad to continue with many of the characters' stories from the first book and go deeper into their backstories.  Rachel continues to be strong and fierce, with Leda's help she begins to break down her unyielding personality.  Through Leda's human eyes, a better understanding of the Arcana and it's social structure is shown.  Leda's thirst for knowledge and gentle nature unravels some of the mysteries of the Arcana and smooths some of Rachel's edges. I was elated to learn more about Bach's history, see him move forward with his life, get a grip on his gift as well as learn of its origins. The being that Rachel and Leda discover in Blue Flame is surprising and interesting to learn about.  I loved that the point of view switched to these special beings and they were very interesting to read, written in a prose style.  The solution to help the being and the family that is being tortured by it was creative and lends itself towards better relationships in the future.  Blue Flame is an action packed, fast paced urban fantasy adventure that I can't wait to read more of.

Alison Levy creates a world/dimension that is parallel to our own, called Nota, in which everything here exists there but with a twist of Fantasy and Science Fiction being a reality. It is a bit more layered than that. One very young character tries to protect his mother from an enemy only he can see. Another tries to reclaim his life, while another character desires to learn about a culture from another dimension. All this while trying to solve Daemon glitches that threaten the Nota universe/dimension.

My favorite characters are the blunt speaking ARCANAN Daemon Collector RACHEL WILDER. BACH, a seer of sorts who can see the future of people around. NAJI is a young boy trying to protect his mother from a DJINN that only he can see. Then there is AZRAQ, a Djinn who was enslaved thousands of years ago.

The themes explored are Good v Evil, Redemption, Courage and Perseverance, and Revenge. The comparison of cultures and the inclusion of cultures and religions we know into the explanation of how certain characters and elements came to be in the story are well done. The sharing of the differences in what is important in one dimension compared to ‘our’ own makes for quite an insightful and thought-provoking read but all in a Fantasy and Light Science Fiction way.

Overall Blue Flame is a good read that makes me want to read the first book and look forward to what happens in the next book. It has more going on than you realize, with those goings on being connected in ways you don’t see coming. You become invested in some of the futures of the characters.

If you like kicka** heroines, colorful characters, and a unique fantasy you can sink your teeth into, this is the series for you. With tight pacing and clever prose, Levy's world is one you won't want to leave anytime soon.

The second installment of the Daemon Collecting Series picks up right where Gatekeeper left off. Inter-dimensional daemon collector Rachel Wilde is recovering from a vicious attack she and her new friend Leda Morley were lucky to have walked away from. Leda comes from an ancient line of gatekeepers, people whose existence keeps damaged daemons from causing harm. Now that Leda is aware of her lineage, Rachel is showing her the ropes of her daemon-collecting work. Together, they soon learn of a young boy who is battling an unseen enemy, one that may or may not fall within Rachel's jurisdiction. Levy also brings back the lovable Bach who, with the help of Leda's brother Simon, is working hard to put his life back on track. Together, with the help of a cranky and misunderstood djinn, this motley crew must find a way to save the boy and his family before it's too late.

This is a truly unique series. Levy has created a world we haven't seen before, set smack dab in the middle of our own. Her characters are well fleshed out - even the daemons and djinn - and her writing is full of wit and charm. Fun, entertaining, and original story. Looking forward to the next in the series!

This author is wonderful but its also hard for me to get right into this book as she has a specific writing style. This in no way deters from her talent and the greatness of this series.

I would recommend reading book one, Gatekeeper first to understand the dimensions and the characters. I was glad to continue with many of the characters' stories from the first book and go deeper into their backstories. I loved that the point of view switched to these special beings and they were very interesting to read.

This was a really wonderful second book in this series and I was so excited I was approached to read this second book. Cant wait to see what else this author will do or come up with in the future.

Startlingly original, the Blue Flame provides not only an insightful commentary on our society, but also, rich complex characters who will stay with you long after you finish. It takes you on an inventive and imaginative journey that will have you seeing our own world in a perceptive new light. Alison immerses us in a unique world with richly drawn characters you won't soon forget. Engaging. Exciting. Exhilarating. Definitely worth the read!!

I enjoyed reading about Leda Morley. She is the currently the only gate keeper left. She is learning about capturing daemons. Meanwhile she interacts with a young boy who is trying to protect his mother for a daemon.

I received a free epub copy from NetGalley.

This book was an interesting read that I enjoyed. The characters were well developed and likable. The magic system was interesting but not too complicated.

For me this was an excellent fantasy novel. I prefer realistic fantasy that takes place in a world similar to ours, mainly so I have less to learn and keep track of. This novel fit my preferences perfectly.

I liked how enough of the world and magic system was explained to follow what was going on in the story but I wasn't so overwhelmed with all of it that I gave up. This method also gives me a reason to want to keep reading the series to see how the world and magic systems get fleshed out.

I come to this series without reading the first novel so I'm not exactly sure who is new and who will continue but I am interested to see how the boy's magic training goes, how Rachel does going back to working a full load, and what happens to the girl that Bach seems to be intertwined with.

I look forward to reading more of this series.
