Zeno De Rossi is arrogant and callous. Nothing like the boy I grew up with.
He's poised to take over the most powerful mafia family in New York.
To him, I'm nothing but the daughter of a soldier-a member of the staff at his grand estate...
Until his estranged brother comes home and shows an interest in me.
Now, I'm trapped in a dangerous dance between two men who hate one another.
Both have secrets.
Neither is safe.
They won't quit until they destroy one another, and I have become their weapon of choice.
This is the familiar story of a second daughter, her struggling family, and the wealthy men who can change their fortunes forever; however, you will find no gentlemen on these pages, nor tittering debutants. In this dark retelling of a Jane Austen classic, our elusive hero is a mafia king, ruthless and calculating; and our heroine is a headstrong modern woman born and raised in the servant's quarters of his estate. Complete with romance, heartbreak, violence, manipulation, and mind-blowing twists, this edgy retelling is perfect for Austen fans who like the darker side of Darcy.
Jill is a Texan, born and raised. She manages the hectic social calendars for her three active children and occasionally spends an evening with her dashing husband. Aside from being an author and a mom, she's a travel junkie and loves to read when she is not lost in her own stories.
With Jill’s books, you can count on confident heroines, plenty of steamy tension, and deliciously assertive leading men. There are no guarantees in life, but with her books, you know everything will work out in the end. However, a perfect ending would not be nearly as satisfying without a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Jill loves to add plenty of adversity in her stories, creating unforgettably dynamic characters and sneaky plot twists you will never see coming.
First off, I'm glad that the second book isn't that far off from release because... THIS ONE HAS DRIVEN ME CRAZY & I WANT ME SOME ZENO WITH LUISA ACTION LIKE RIGHT NOW. 🥰🥰🥰
This one was like a beautiful slow cruise, taking you smoothly on a journey with absolutely no clue where the destination is and mind you, each chapter was one to savour with getting to know luisa and her family and her complicated dynamics with Zeno and Nevio, but never would I have imagined it would finally toss me in a whirlwind of complicated emotions and secrets leaving me 😲😲😲😲
Luisa is a independent girl who's made her way in life on her own. She's visiting her family who work for the De Rossi'.
She's had once a friendship with Zeno, the eldest De Rossi, where now they hardly talk to each other. Till date Luisa questions as to what happened all those years before for her Zeno to go from being her best friend to not wanting to even see her face.
When luisa finds somethings she feels she has to protect her father and in order to do that she will have to push ahead her schooling and solve the problem at home. As otherwise her beloved father and the most important man in her life would be in danger.
So she decides to prolong her stay and work for the de rossi'. But things get complicated when she feels the always aloof Zeno changing with the way he looked at her and randomly gave off vibes that he wanted her.
Not only that Zeno's brother, Nevio also wants to pursue her and now Luisa is stuck between deciding. Nevio the charmer and good mannered one or Zeno, whom she feels like fire when together but has no regards for others' feelings even his own family.
I found Zeno to be a enigmatic personality with keeping his feelings tightly closed off to himself while people presumed him to be rude. But you can't deny the sparks that go off between Luisa and Zeno.
I devoured this book with the many family dynamics and complications. BUT THAT FREAKING TWISTED AT THE END EXPLAINING EVERYTHING... OH MY GOODNESS... PLEASE I NEED BOOK 2 RIGHT FREAKING NOW. 😍😍
Also what's is happening between Gia and Carter. Please please Ms. Ramsover we need answers about them. Will they get together? And that connection between Ari and Grace.. Omg... How is that even possible. With Ari being the boss' daughter.
Ahhh.. So many things are going and I need answers. There's just something about the writing that sweeps you off into luisa's world and leaves you yearning for Zeno as much as she does. Loved loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I saw the post on FB of the upcoming release of a new Jill Ramsower book, I was excited because I love her books, but even more so because this one was billed as a "mafia, pride and prejudice" story. I love mafia romances, but Pride and Prejudice is my favorite classic. Imagine how thrilled I was ... after signing up for a chance to receive an ARC ... to learn I'd been selected.
I have to preface this review with the fact that I LOVE the original "Pride and Prejudice". So much so, I've read it more times than I can count and I've watched every movie and t.v. series production of it (multiple times). I've also read too many stories that are billed as modernized, steamy or alternate versions, you name it; even sequels (i.e., Elizabeth and Darcy after marriage) as well as loosely based versions, etc. Most were really bad, especially the steamy versions i've read. I would call them insults to Austen! While a very few were halfway decent NONE, particulatly the modern versions, have captured and conveyed the real essence of the original Austen novel...the subtle, intensity of feelings and emotions that are in the characters' hearts, buried underneath their skin; and especially, not the personalities of the original characters. This story did just that! Jill Ramsower created a totally different, intriguing, modern story involving the mafia, with it's own distinctive characters, and still managed to capture all the personalities of the original Austen characters in her own, as well as all the elements of the Pride and Prejudice story.
If you're expecting a lot of Mafia activity, i.e., violence, murder, etc., you will be disappointed. There is very little in this book. Yes, the male characters are made men in various positions and there is a bookie threatening the silly mom for repayment of a loan; but mostly, this really is a pride and prejudice story. While the story follows the basic elements of Pride and Prejudice, it does it in it's own unique way. For example, there is no Mrs Catherine DeBourgh, rather there is a Mafia Boss. So you're NOT reading Pride and Prejudice. Instead you're reading a totally unrelated and separate story, but you will recognize the elements of Pride and Prejudice as well as the characters (by personality alone) if you are an Austen fan. If you're not, you will still enjoy this story, the twists and turns and the great characters. Also, true to Austen's original, don't expect a lot of steamy sex scenes, at least not in this one. (It would have ruined the tenor of this story.) A kiss or two and some sexting, is all you'll get in this first book of the duet.
Yes, this is a duet. This book ends on the scene where the H, Zeno, has left a letter for the h, Luisa, explaining certain things and past behaviors, similar to Darcy's explanation to Elizabeth after she rebuffed his ill given proposal. Of course, because this story is very different, the past behaviors and reasons thereof, are disparate.
My only complaint is that now I have to wait until December for release of book 2, Silent Prejudice!
Jill Ramsower did what no other author who has ever tried to emulate, recreate, or modernize Austen's novel has ever done. She succeeded in incorporating the theme and all the elements that made Austen's novel great, while writing her own unique, modern story. Jane would be proud!
As previously noted, I received an ARC for an honest review. But I have already pre-ordered the second book in this duet!
This is my second Jill Ramsower book, and I must say, I am lost for words of wondering why it has taken me so long—but OMG, I never thought I would have such a gamut of emotions—I will be reading more of her books. That cliffhanger…I was completely and utterly blown away! This dark and wickedly enticing retelling story of Pride and Prejudice, which is one of my favorite stories, is a modern twist with a Mafia story that grabbed me by the throat and never let go—I was captivated from start to finish! This is Luisa Banetti and Zeno De Rossi’s story.
Gawd, let me tell you, Zeno is an enigma of a man who is a complete douche bag! Zeno never shows weakness, he is overwhelming, conceited, selfish, arrogant, cruel, cold-hearted and always trying to hide his feelings. You either like him or hate him, and right now I am on the latter. Luisa is smart, sweet, lovable, and sassy. Zeno, his brother Nevio, and Luisa knew each other since they were kids and played together all the time… until they didn’t. Zeno distanced himself from Luisa and his brother. Why? That is a good question! Fast forward ten years later—Zeno is now a Capo in the Giordano Mafia organization, and he has the same characteristics as before. Surprises here—No! Unlike most Mafia stories, this story does not have any action and violence. This story is a slow burn enemies to lovers with a hate/love relationship where the main characters are kind of enemies. The explosive attraction between Zeno and Luisa is unparalleled. After an incident occurred, Luisa finds herself at a crossroad, and she is put into an impossible situation where she questioned Zeno’s motives, trust and secrets. What is the secret that Luisa is concealing? What happens next? Well, read this amazing story and find out—you won’t regret it! There are several twists and turns within the story that will tempt the characters in ways they could have never envisioned. Jill Ramsower delivered a powerful and emotional, intense, and all-consuming story that left me obsessed and yearning for more. The anticipation of the next book will be really succulent, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided to me. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I must wait a whole month for the conclusion to come out after the bombshell that was dropped! You all, this is going to be a rough 30 days!
Luisa Banetti came home to visit with her family, unaware that her family's boss had passed away, and she would come face to face with a man she hadn’t seen in 10 years. Louisa helps out the main house and runs in Zeno De Rossi and his brother Nevio. Being around her sisters, she has three, by the way, is always exciting and, of course, never quiet. Not everything is as it seems, and not everyone is as she thought they were.
There are so many secrets in this book. I stayed up late, and I lost sleep; I spent my lunch break reading. I was under the Savage Pride spell. There are so many people in this novel keeping secrets. Big secrets that can have severe consequences. What I want to know is how did Luisa keep her sanity. My sister and I grew up in a decent-sized house where there was plenty of space. Only on vacations did we ever share a bed, and that was rough. Louisa handled her sisters amazingly well, and her father did a fantastic job keeping his cool. There were a few characters that I am not going to name so that no spoilers will be given. Those people put a sour taste in my mouth. Though a few may have the possibility to be redeemed....all but one.
Starting my countdown for the next book and will undoubtedly be testing my patience in wait, but man, oh man, is it going to be worth it!
Jill has done it again!!! She has taken one of my all time favorite classics Pride and Prejudice given it a modern mafia twist but still pays homage and stays true to the original story! Zeno is the darker Darcy indeed and Luisa is the head strong and sassy Elizabeth. This book like all of Jill’s sucked me in from the beginning. There were late nights with just one more chapter just one more chapter, re reading favorite parts to capture every nuance, and now anxiously awaiting the next book to finish Zeno and Luisa’s story! And even though I “know” the end Jill’s fantastic and fresh story telling, amazing details, and phenomenal characters keep you invested, hanging on each word and begging for more! I won’t give details so not to spoil but trust me, you want to read, need to read, have to read Savage Pride!!
I know I say this every time I read Jill's books but her writing style just draws me in, the way she spins her stories is almost hypnotic, once I start I know I won't be coming up for air until I've finished, and this book was no different!
My only complaint is that I wish I'd read slower and savoured it, I found myself going back to re read lines and paragraphs because they were just so impactful!
This is a Pride and Prejudice retelling with a mafia modern day twist and holy hell Jill has NAILED IT!
Luisa is so loveable, I really clicked with her character from the get go, she's strong willed but she's also human but she won't let anybody see her fall apart and I admired her for that.
Zeno, I really wanted to hate the arrogant asshole, but he's wormed his way in like I knew he would because Jill wrote his character FLAWLESSLY! The darker side of Darcy indeed 😈
And the side characters! I'm not sure they can even be called side characters because they all have such a big part to play, and I've become attached to each and every one of them - I don't want to give spoilers but I even liked the guy who were probably not meant to like! If you've read it you probably know who I mean 😂
Okay I know I've not given much information to go on but I don't want to spoil anything - read the book you won't be disappointed I promise! There's so many secrets, betrayals, twists and turns, I didn't see any of them coming and I'm just blown away!
Okay I'm going to stop rambling now because I'm embarrassing myself - but THANK YOU JILL for another flawless read! 🖤
Set aside a full day for this steamy, adult Mafia triangle set in June, mainly near Hardwick House in Tuxedo Park, New York, involving members of the Giordano Crime Family. I had an ARC via NetGalley and this voluntary review is my own opinion.
YASSS!!!! Like OMG YAS!!! As soon as I finished this book I told Jill that I needed MORE!!!
If you love Pride and Prejudice....and love mafia stories.....THIS is a story for you. It is a modern day Pride and Prejudice mafia retelling with a few little twists and turns that I did not expect!
For now...I'ma end my review right here and eagerly await Silent Prejudice, and then I'll bring you a more full review of the duet as a whole. But just trust me....if you're a mafia fan and a P&P fan...don't pass this one up!!!
Savage Pride is the first book in the Pride and Prejudice Duet by Jill Ramsower. Luisa Banetti comes home from the City to find her mother in trouble and that Zeno De Rossi, her childhood friend turned enemy had come home as well. Luisa's family takes care of Zeno's family estate and with Luisa staying at home to fix the situation her mom finds herself in, Zeno is becoming more difficult to avoid. On top of that, Zeno is sending mixed signals about his feelings for Luisa and she doesn't quite know where she stands.
Jill Ramsower is always a one click for me and this dark Pride and Prejudice retelling definitely hit the spot! The story is well written and there's a ton of mystery and suspense. And secrets. Big fat secrets that have these two star crossed lovers firmly apart. This book is a sloooooooowww burn, but I have a feeling it's going to be picking up significantly in the second book. I do wish it moved a little quicker. I found myself skimming a couple of times on the way to the big reveal, but it's definitely worth the journey! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book - lots of unanswered questions still and I can't wait to see how it all plays out between Luisa and Zeno!
It was a lot less dark than I expected. That doesn’t mean that I didn’t like it. Au contraire. This interesting take on Pride and prejudice took me by surprise.
I was waiting for a dark and violent Darcy; Zeno sure is cold and though we don’t know much about his criminal activities, we can guess he’s no angel, but he’s also passionate and shows some vulnerability. I really really liked the character, even though we see him only through Luisa’s eyes–single point of view through the book–and she hasn’t much good to say about him. He was a study in contradictions.
As for Luisa, she was a strong lead. As much as her classic counterpart, she takes her family’s burdens upon herself. She’s also sassy, independent, and loves with her whole heart. Her interactions with Zeno spark fires, even when they barely talk to each other. The balance between hate and desire was electric, and fueled by the secrets that ruined their friendship as children.
All the changes from Austen’s classic were clever, and gave an edge to the story–I won’t spoil them though. The anticipation I felt was exciting: I know where the story is supposed to go, but how the author, in that new context, will get there? Either you’ve read P&P or not, you’ll definitely enjoy this mafia romance.
Quickie
- Series: Savage pride duet #1 (ends on a cliffhanger) - Hashtags: #mafia romance #enemies to lovers #love triangle #retelling - Triggers: death and grief - Main couple: Luisa Banetti & Zeno De Rossi - Hotness: 3/5 - Romance: 3/5 - + the little changes from Austen’s story are really clever - – not as dark as I expected
The premise is great. Essentially it is a Mafia Romance retelling of Pride & Prejudice. As a lifelong Jane Austen fan, I was certainly hooked from page one.
Pride & Prejudice is quite a well-known narrative at this point, but this is a really fresh take on the story. The Mafia genre also lends itself really well to it, offering the context needed to convert a 19th century story about families and wealth and elitism and power into something modern and relevant.
The chemistry between the characters is also great. Luisa and Zeno are both really complex, interesting characters and it was fun to watch their banter as their relationship develops. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2!
I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I was to get my hands on this book! Mafia romance is one of my preferred tropes and Pride and Prejudice is one of my all time favorite novels. If you haven’t read that infamous classic, no worries! If you have, then you are in for a treat.
Cleverly written, this author has crafted a story that is intriguing and riveting. There are some modern parallels with Pride and Prejudice, but the author is creative in making this a unique story. Luisa Banetti (see, clever? Lizzie Bennett) is a strong heroine. She is a perfectly flawed character, a bit saucy at times, and is a kind hearted soul. She is the type of woman I would love to have in my corner! Zeno De Rossi is rich, dashing, and full of arrogance. He is more of an enigma at times and this, perhaps, is because the novel is told solely from Luisa’s POV. I would love to get a glimpse into his mind, but I do believe the singular POV is prefect for this story. The secondary characters are immensely entertaining. They all have distinct personalities and I like the roles that they all have played so far.
I did find this book to be a little slow at times which is fitting given the slow burn nature of their relationship. My love of the characters, the interesting premise, and fun twists and revaluations made this novel a very enjoyable read. Savage Pride is my first book by this author and it most certainly will not be my last. Actually, I am already eagerly anticipating the 2nd book in this duet, Silent Prejudice! For those who love the Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and/or mafia romances, this is a definite must read!
Jill has taken a classic story, "Pride and Prejuice", one I have read numerous times and put a spin and twist on it. The story grabs your attention and pulls you in from the very beginning. Luisa, the second oldest of four daughters has come home for a week's vacation to visit her family before moving into her new apartment and finishing her last year of college. From the moment she arrives at the gated entry of Tuxedo Park and her name is not on the list of visitors there is problems, surprises and secrets. With her return to her childhood home she encounters Zeno and Nevio, brothers who are also home and were two of her closest friends when they were all children. There is an unsettling distance between the brothers and both are battling for Luisa's attention. There are so many twist and turns in this story and a revelation that leaves you on a cliff until the next book. This is one story you don't want to put down and you will definitely be patiently waiting for the next book to continue the evolving story.
4.5 Stars! This books brings all the angst, all the sexual tension, and drops a bomb at the end that has me jonesing for the next book!
Zeno plays emotional ping pong with Luisa’s heart, to say the least. Hot and cold, yet the tension is always, ALWAYS, there between them. Meanwhile, Luisa is finding herself in the sites of Zeno’s brother Nevio, who is seemingly sweet and very much interested in more than just friendship. But Luisa only feels the spark with Zeno, despite how furious he makes her most of the time, so she is most definitely torn. We also get tangled up in some of the side stories, Gia, Gracie, they both have interesting developments occurring in their lives that just add to the stratospheric drama in this book. The intrigue and relationships are wholly engrossing, and I just want more!
What’s also interesting about this book, is that while it’s a mafia based romance, it almost doesn’t have that feel - and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They are most definitely entirely wrapped up in the world of these big mafia families. Whether it be direct family members, or made men with families that work in the larger households, it’s definitely a close community of powerful people. That said, we don’t have a lot of the intensity and violence that is so often a part of these types of books. There are a couple aspects that pop through, things that hint at the delicate balance that Luisa tries to maintain as part of the “help”, and wanting to protect her family, and especially her father, from the wrath of the family. But the first part of the book deals with the death of one of the family heads, Zeno’s father, to be specific. The events and interactions are so normal and almost inconsequential - the impression you get is not one of fear and power, but of families that love each other fiercely and take care of each other. It’s just an interesting spin on the mafia romance, to be sure.
But that ending, that bombshell, was a doozy, and I am very interested to see where the story goes from here. It definitely hints that everyone’s world is about to be turned completely upside down. And Zeno and Luisa are going to ignite!
5 STARS for Savage Pride by Jill Ramsower Book 1 in the Pride and Prejudice Mafia Duet.
Advanced reader copy received from the author in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are my own and have not been influenced in any way.
This is an amazing modern day retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with a mafia twist. If you are a fan of this classic novel and mafia genre Savage Pride is definitely for you !
My review does not contain any spoilers but you should know this is a 2 book series and Savage Pride not only ends in a cliffhanger but has some serious major plot twists.
Zeno De Rossi comes home to Hardwick house after his father’s sudden death. Luisa Banetti is the daughter of Hardwick’s house caretakers and she hasn’t seen Z for a a few years after an argument that seemed to destroy their friendship. But is there something more between them? Sizzling chemistry and strongly denied feelings play into a long kept secret. I will admit to not liking Zeno’s character at first but what seems to be his overbearing , controlling behavior is really the way he just tries to deal with the expectations life has placed on him to be poised to takeover the most powerful mafia family.
I could not put this book down and I highly recommend the book , series and author. Ms Ramsower is an amazing author and great storyteller.
This was a retelling of the classic Pride and Prejudice, only with a mafia twist. Luisa is the heroine. She is coming home for what she thinks is a visit. When she gets home, there is news she wasn’t expecting. This begins the story of Zeno, Luisa, and Nevio. The book has a good flow, with past scenes of the three of them. It was sometimes long and I couldn’t understand the dislike. Luisa has a lot on her shoulders and can’t understand the dislike. I felt sad for her. This book also has lots of characters. This helps the book flow as that adds other components to the story. I was left hanging and can’t wait for book two!!!
I honestly cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this book! If you love Pride and Prejudice and you love Mafia; this is the book for you! All the details & layers that went into Savage Pride, Jill Ramsower has truly outdone herself.
All the Slow Burn 🔥, the angsty goodness & an ending that will leave you breathless. Savage Pride is most definitely one of my top reads of 2021'.
Zeno is an alphahole in the Mafia, that you just want to throat punch. Luisa has known Zeno and his brother Nevio for a long time until he changed. Now their paths have crossed and the attraction between her and Zeno is undeniable. This book has heat, secrets and is well written. My first by Jill and not my last.
I received this Advanced Reader Copy from the Author and my honest review is voluntary.
Every family has its problems and this is no different for Zeno who has so many secrets he feels he has to keep to protect his family and Luisa. Once they where friends and over night they where strangers all because of a secret and feeling that Zeno was to honor Bound to follow throw or reveal until it was to late or is it?? Like me we will have to wait for the next book to find out what happens.
I don’t want to go into a lot of detail here, because this book is full of secrets. But I will say this: I loved everything about this book! The writing style pulled me in from the get go and the story was very addictive. I’ll be on my seat anxiously anticipating the follow up!
Note: I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved loved this novel. Specially because darker retelling of pride and prejudice, hello?! And two because the handsome cover heh. And the plot convinced me too.
This novel was absolutely on fire with a mafia retelling of pride and prejudice, along with dark yet stubborn yet savagely beautiful (get the title pun?) characters who tore each other apart yet fixed each other too in the most unconventional way possible, along with beautiful writing that crafted a strangely fascinating world that I never wanted to get out of, fiery chemistry, emotions wholly present and me also crying laughing loving this novel overall.
This novel is a testament to how wonderfully wonderful hehe Jill writes and I cannot wait for the second novel too, eeeeeh.
https://nextbookaroundthecorner.wordp... Hell yes! After finishing Perfect Enemies I was a bit sad that I had to say goodbye to the Genovese sisters and their maffia families. But fortunately, Jill has started a new duet about another maffia family in New York: the De Rossi’s. Zeno is ruthless and arrogant and he is about to take over as a head of the family, ever since his father died recently.
Luisa returns home to her family, just when Zeno’s father is about to be buried. Luisa’s family has been in service with the De Rossi family for ages, so she has know Zeno since a child. She, Zeno and his younger brother Nevio were best friends growing up. But all of a sudden, Zeno has changed. And now he doesn’t want to do anything with Luisa. Which is (mostly, but she’ll never confirm this) why Luisa kept away from the estate. But now, she is back and while back she is drawn into a family secret. And now, she has to find a way out…
Meanwhile, she is struggling with Zeno’s attitude towards her: running hot and cold and being utterly unpredictable. What is Zeno hiding? And how far is Luisa willing to go to keep her family secret a secret? As usual with Jill: utterly confusing, twists and turns everywhere and she keeps you yearning for the next part…
Hopefully I can start soon on the second part, because the ending of Savage Pride left me reeling… Let’s hope so! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley fo providing the arc.
3.5 stars rating as 4🌟🌟🌟🌟. A bit on the fence......
Savage Pride is the first installment in the Savage Pride Duet and a mafia retelling of Jane Austen's classic Pride and Prejudice. Let me start by saying that it was ingeniously creative and original to engage in one of the most best known and adored books in English Literature and produce a whole new account in the mafia genre. In that regard, this tale was supremely well executed in terms of plot development, accuracy and the overall feel of the story. What did not work for me, you ask? At times, I thought some characters behaviors were not compatible with their age and mafia life, but would have made perfectly sense if they were 5 or 6 years younger and in a different background. I was expecting exchanges and actions with a more mature inkling than what I felt. Then, there's Louisa and Z: I totally understood the distance from Z and his reasons, but I was expecting a smoother transition when he decided it was finally time to choose for himself and approach Louisa. I liked the book, but unfotunately didn't love it. Nevertheless, my curiosity is picked to read the second part of this duet, Savage Prejudice, and to get to know what lies behind Nevio's personality, the situation with Gia as well as Grace's and if there will be lessons to learn by the members of the families.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.
Lusia & Zeno The Capo love story is a very different mafia. This book has no violence so if you are new to mafia romance world. I recommend reading this one first then build yourself up. Their love story is a Soul mate one
I have never read mafia romance centered around a classic and I love it & it's a refreshing read. Don't worry there are plenty of secrets and some characters need to redeem themselves...no spoilers
Lusia, Zeno & his brother Nevio use to play together as children...no spoilers There is sweet moment were you see the small signs of love and heart break...no spoilers ",the lose of his friendship is like a broken bone that won't heal."
SURPISE TWIST CLIFFHANGER & I need book 2. They are soulmates !!
I am a big Pride and Prejudice fan and Mafia is my favorite trope. So of course when I heard about this newest duet by Jill Ramsower I was right on it!
I enjoyed the characterizations, especially Zeno's. While Luisa was overall a strong personality, she fluctuated a lot between being bold and demure, so she was a tougher one to get a good gauge on. But I realize that was the intent as her character and the story progressed.
Great start to this couple's relationship and into all the family and interpersonal dynamics going on here. Some juicy goodness in the twists and unexpected revelations. At the cliffhanger ending, we're still just at the tip of the iceberg in this unfolding story. Sitting tight until the next book!
I received an ARC and I am leaving a review voluntarily. Opinions are my own.
Savage Pride by Jill Ramsower is a very interesting and innovative retelling of Jane Austen's timeless classic Pride and Prejudice. It mixed the familiar plot and characters and gave the classic a modern look in a mafia romance setting. . This is the first story of the duet.Luisa Banetta came to spend few days with her family in Hardwick estate before starting the final phase of her higher education in city. Her parents work in various capacities for De Rossis, the head of mafia. Her return coincided with death of the Rossi matriarch. And she meets Zeno De Rossi, her once upon a time best friend after a long time. She doesn't yet understand why Zeno suddenly pushed her away years back and why he still treats her with disdain and bitterness. But it appears some family problem will prolong her stay in Hardwick and something has to give between her and Zeno. . Let me tell you the parts I loved. I loved Luisa and Zeno as individual characters. Luisa is such a strong, independent, smart, loyal and compassionate girl. Family is everything to her. She looks for the best in everyone but she doesn't back down when Zeno acts cold and bitter. Zeno is the perfect combination of edgy, dark, broken and swoony. He is going through a painful stage and he doesn't want to be with Luisa as it complicates his family reputation. But he is helpless and the author really brought out that agony in his character. He wants to protect her and make her own against his brain's protests. . I had some issues with the pacing of the story. It seems that every secret of why Zeno was acting so rough towards Luisa is explained in last few pages. The change in Zeno's behaviour was abrupt and didnt carry the impact. The story being told from Luisa's pov only was another issue. I spent a lot of time with her family, the details of her family troubles, her feelings and her activities and not enough with Zeno and Isa together to feel their connection. This is a mafia romance but you won't see much mafia action here. I felt while trying to be true to Pride and Prejudice, the author failed to maintain the uniformity of modern world. The way the characters acted or behaved seemed a bit ancient or stiff..not something you expect from modern mafia romance. . I reviewed an early copy voluntarily
A mafia retelling of Pride and Prejudice - one of my favourite stories of ALL time? Umm, yes please!!! When I saw the sign ups for this duet I was all over it like a rash!! There is nothing in this world quite like Mr Darcy, am I right?!!
This retelling is slightly different in the sense that the other man that Elizabeth, or in this case Luisa or Isa to her loved ones, is entangled with is the brother of our very own Mr Darcy, or Zeno in Savage Pride.
It made for a different and welcome retelling and despite the fact that the author had well fleshed out characters to work with from the get go (thank you Ms Austen) she added her own stamp to this legendary couple.
Isa is as determined and headstrong as she is supposed to be. Vastly different and decidedly more independent than her sisters, she is a strong current heroine.
Zeno, oh Z, I think I love you!! Honestly I think I misunderstood him for the vast majority of the story (well done Ms Ramsower, that's the WHOLE POINT of an Austen novel and you hit the nail on the head each and every time) but for every tidbit into his psyche, every part of his past and reasoning that unfolded slowly but surely, I became enamoured. Much like our Isa, to her own disapproval.
I don't want to say a whole lot about the rest of the tale. Other than the knowledge it was a mafia based P&P inspired story I went in fully blind. The only thing I will say is that it wasn't mafia the way I am used to reading it. There was an undertone and hints to mafia ish things but it was in no way dark. It was a much more Austen ish story than that.
And in true Austen style it was a mostly clean romance (other than that texting scene which was spicy as all get out!!) I'm hoping for some more mafia related incidents and a lot more spice in the sequel but either way I will most certainly be devouring the second part.
My thanks to the author and Give Me Books PR for the early copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.
