And I am, unashamedly, all of those things and so, so many more.
I'm the lone daughter of The Swallow Family crime syndicate.
A bloodied, violent queen reigning from a throne of bone and ash, hands and soul bathed in crimson.
The one thing I'm not, though?
Crazy.
Or so I thought...
But when I start receiving threats, start 'seeing' people that only I see and get forced to take time out, I start to wonder if they might be right about me after all.
Just a crazy girl made up of twisted, shattered pieces, a half dead organ decaying inside her wounded chest and a tendency for violence.
I'm Kyla-Rose Swallow and this is the beginning of my downfall.
So, welcome to Southbrook, the city where Swallows rule and psychos raise hell.
This is a dark, contemporary reverse harem romance, meaning the female main character will have three or more love interests and will not have to choose. The harem grows throughout the series, meaning there is not an established harem in book 1. It is a medium/fast burn romance.
This is a VERY dark book, it contains heavy violence/torture scenes. If you are even a mildly sensitve reader this is probably not the book for you. The characters in this series all deal with trauma and problems differently, the resolutions and methods they use are not always traditional and therefore may not be for everyone. This is book 1 of a planned trilogy and DOES end on a cliffhanger. The series will end with a HEA.
4 stars Loved this book The Swallow Crime family is just a bunch of crazies and I'm living for it. Charlie and Kyla are iconic when they are leading together. THAT LAST PAGE THO Ugh, can't wait to read more from this author. Really enjoyed their writing.
4.5 stars. …I totally saw that cliffhanger coming. No lie. I was just Waiting for it. The foreshadowing was more like a spotlight, honestly. 😂 Still. I liked it. It’s different from what I thought it’d be when I picked it up, so I’m not entirely sure where everything is going, but I’m enjoying what’s happened so far.
I’m really hoping there’s some groveling in the next book…seems like there Should be from everything we’ve been told but usually when I really think it’s necessary it just doesn’t happen at all so we’ll see, I guess.
This book was instantly added to my favorites list! There’s just something about a psycho heroine that makes me all giddy inside. Kyla-Rose is one badass psycho who loves blood, torture, and hide-and-go-stab. Wonderful twist on a classic children’s game, might I add. Especially when you’re playing it with your equally as psycho cousin. Ah, the Chaos Twins. Charlie…be still my heart. My heart melted for that damaged psycho. I’m totally in love so a part of me wants a book of his own but the other part says, “back off bitches, he’s mine!” (Sorry, husband *cough*). This book had me enthralled from the first sentence. Being a reverse harem just put it into god status. Two dicks are better than one, am I right? Then add a 3rd in book 2 and I’m in reading heaven. I loved all the characters (except a couple girl side characters and Jacob needs a good punch to the face). This was an exceptional 5 star (10 star) read, and if you love RH, psychos, getting away with crime, torture, murder, and some good smut….then this is the book for you. I kept putting this series off. I’m such an idiot. This is definitely an author to keep an eye on!
This book! Where do I even start! I absolutely devoured this in one sitting.
I go crazy for a stabby FMC but this book took this to the next level! Kyla-Rose is beautifully psychotic and totally a bad ass! The whole Swallow family is so intriguing but Charlie is definitely my favourite!
As soon as we are introduced to the guys I was so invested in this being an RH and considering I went in blind and wasn't sure if it was I was on the edge of my seat reading.
The tension and banter was perfect and the mystery surrounding her past and what happened with her first love has me dying for book 2!
Such a great debut and I can't wait for more! If you like dark reverse harem filled with mystery and psychos then this is for you!
Overly confident heroine, too much prose and extraneous detail, slow story progression and this is only book 1. I didn’t find the story particularly dark despite all the warnings. There is some violence and references to past haunts, also some engaging mystery but buried in so much detail whether the repetitive description of characters to minutiae of every movement, every event. Loved the Swallow fam, candidate heroes, steam, and story premise, but not enough to overcome story’s progression.
Well this book was a crazy train I wasn’t aware I was boarding. Something about a deranged and psychotic heroine typically makes for an excellent and bloody read and Kyla-Rose definitely delivered. Not only has a horrible childhood left her damaged and living on the dark side, Kyla also belongs to the family business: the Swallow Family crime syndicate. When her nightmares become too much, along with her equally deranged cousin, the duo let the darkness take over reading havoc and bloodshed on anyone who stands in their way. Because of such a harsh upbringing and stint in juvy that stripped her of her innocence, Kyla does not date nor does she do feelings. No one’s more surprised than her when not one but two equally delicious and obsessive alpha men start pursuing her hard. Throwing caution to the wind they slowly build a foundation for the eventual harem. Kyla’s past seems to be haunting her however and demons don’t always stay in hell so I have a feeling there’s a lot more bloodshed to come. It’s hard to tell at this point who or what the threat is but it’s clear Kyla will have to shed some gut wrenching secrets if she wants the guys on her side 200%. She’s learning to let them in a little at a time but as relationships and emotions are new to her communication that doesn’t involve weapons has never been high on her list. As the future head of the family Kyla has become one with the life but now she’ll have to join forces with the guys as well as ghosts from the past if she hopes to remain at the top.
WHAT IN THE FRESH SAM HELLLLLLLL.. Jesus. Okay people I haven't had a deep guttural obsession like this in a hot second. I feel like im on coke which is kind of spooky considering the hardest drug I have ever done is claritin. First of all, Kyla mother FUCKNG Rose is the baddest mother fucker in all the lands to ever exist. I want to be her when I grow up, and I am def already older than her. WE STAN A PSYCHO QUEEEEEN.. God, I knew I was going to love her from the minute she drank a martini with a literal eyeball in it. Is this what love feels like...I fucking hope so. AND THENNNNNNNNN we have added super sexy giant hunk of an "ill beat your fucking ass" man in Kacey - who im pretty sure is also the golden retriever of the group (ironic I know)... and then because math is sexy we go ahead and add Huxxxxx. Ugh, my big sexy goober. I cant control the feeling in my vag. she's got a mind of her fucking own people.
and because its not enough to make my nipples hard and leave me high and dry, K.L. TAYLOR-LANE HAS THE COCKACITY to hit me with a cliffhanger?!? how dare. how fuckin dare. I will forgive her sexy self but only because the series is complete and I can go ahead and binge book 2.
Finally a RH romance with an actual plot🔥 You never know it’s a debut book. It’s so well done👏🏼
I don’t know where to start, just know this book is bloody and messy and spicy and just beautiful. Who’s ready to meet the queen of an underground crime syndicate who drinks martinis with pedo’s eyeballs in it? That’s right, she gets rid of pedophiles in very creative and vicious ways lol Cue Trigger Warnings!! So beware!!
This book is a RH romance with an amazingly intriguing and complex story, fiery chemistry, beautiful family bonds and tragic backstories. The female MC Kyla-Rose or Lala or Rosie is mental and she obviously has mommy and daddy issues but her bond with her family is the most special feature and I love seeing that in my books😍 Her relationship with her uncle and cousins is so heartbreaking yet beautiful to see, with them being one of the most powerful crime syndicates in town, called the Swallow Family.
While reading I haven’t felt so protective over a female MC for a long time. She’s so badass and tough but I still want to keep Kyla-Rose safe, this beautiful psychopath. Thankfully she’s perfectly capable of doing that herself and doesn’t need me lol because she has her own beauts who protect her with their own lives: Kacey and Hux😍 Also one thing: Maddox Sharpe??????? Some might argue about the cliffhanger but come on you can’t just stop the book here😫 I need Max NOW. ASAP!!
Oh and btw I have a soft spot for the Swallow Brothers too, I need them all to have their own books 😍🔥 I need more Charlie, Cam and Jacob and Eli😩 ASAP. Lala’s cousins are amazing and hot as hell.
DNF- made it 300+ pages in and nothing fucking happens. I know, I know… I could have just read the last 40ish pages to finish it but I just really didn’t care.
I’ve always got a soft spot for books set in the UK, especially when they’re written by British English speakers or people who’ve lived here for years. There’s just something about the perfect flow of dialect and realising subtle differences in culture. K L Taylor-Lane may have set Purgatory in the fictional region of Southbrook, but the British in the book really shines through and gives it a little edge that your average organised crime book doesn’t always have.
Kyla-Rose is our protagonist and the narrator for much of the story. When I hear the way she and others describe herself, I immediate see Taylor-Lane’s avatar in my head. I’d love to delve deep into how she created the character. Kyla-Rose has a chaotic mind. She frequently goes off on tangents before returning to her original point. This feels quite natural, much like the way my friends and I chat with each other, rather than the focused and more formal presentation of many heroines.
I loved the fact that Kyla-Rose is an incredibly human character. She may be “running part of the biggest crime syndicate that England’s ever seen,” but she still worries about her date with Kacey, what he will think of her, and what will happen when he finds out who she actually is. She has that crazy urge to get her beauty needs attended to and get out of her apartment after being cooped up on bed rest for weeks. Kyla-Rose’s thoughts (and sometimes her spoken words) are a brand of witty sarcasm that even the best of us wish we could pull off.
She’s living with the consequences of a broken childhood and PTSD following her time in juvie, making her one of the most vulnerable mafia queens I’ve ever read. I really connected with her need to appear strong and never let her emotions show, even while she’s breaking inside.
Taylor-Lane writes Kyla-Rose’s pain well, from her anguish as she breaks after seeing “Him” to how quickly her youthful love for Maddox twists into rage. It comes across best in her explosions when things become too much for her and the panic that fills her mind.
On the other hand, Kyla-Rose is definitely into her reverse harem novels. What normal person hooks up with one guy, falls for his best mate as well, thinks “hey! They can share,” barely questioning how the dynamic between the three will work? Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me, but as she’s a fictional character and the guys told her once or twice not to overthink it, I’ll let her get away with it. She’s got more than enough on her plate without worrying about how to juggle two guys.
The blurb claims this book is very dark but I’m not sure I’d agree. It does have dark elements to it but I wouldn’t consider the scenes to be heavy. There is craziness, psychopaths and internal demons and it is worth reading the trigger warnings but I’d call it a light charcoal on the darkness scale.
My only real criticism of Purgatory comes from the storyline, and that not a lot happens in it. In some respects, I think this feeling is driven by reading a lot of books that drive punch after punch until you’re left reeling by the inevitable cliffhanger. Purgatory is not like that. It starts in the calm and lets the lovers meet without the pressure of facing difficulty or drama. While Kyla-Rose has a breakdown, we don’t see a huge deal more than the catalyst and instead, the book focuses on her recovery. It won’t have you gripping the edge of your seat but it is a book that draws you in and keeps you wanting more before blasting you with a shock in the last paragraph.
I know I’m looking forward to the next book in the series – I think it’s one of those that’s only going to get better and better.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ PURGATORY * Kyla-Rose’s humanity and vulnerability is refreshing * There is so much room for character growth and opportunity to extend past Kyla-Rose’s story * The steam levels are off the charts – the book is one big ball of sexual need
As a fan of dark romance, I've been anxiously awaiting this debut novel from K.L. Taylor-Lane, and it definitely did not disappoint. From the very beginning, this author wastes no time getting right down to the gritty dark side of this book as our heroine's crazy comes out to play.
Kyla-Rose is the only female member of the Swallows family crime syndicate. Surrounded by a horde of overbearing male cousins and employees, she really doesn't need them to protect her. She's perfectly capable of fending for herself. She's still vulnerable though, and as her past comes back to haunt her, those vulnerabilities continue to grow.
This is the first book in a trilogy that will be a RH romance. As of this first book, Kyla-Rose meets two men who allow her to let her guard down. Their connection is instant, and it's exactly what she needs most right now. There is plenty of steam with these three, and although I like both of Kyla's guys, I'm already picking a favorite...we'll see if I change my mind as the story progresses.
Purgatory is a very strong start to the Swallows and Psychos series as it sets the stage for all that is to come. You see a glimpse into Kyla-Rose's past as well as some hints as to what might be ahead. I'm curious to see how this RH is going to grow as we move into the next book, and I have some theories about the dangers that may be facing them all. I'm already looking forward to book two.
Wow, that was a great debut novel. I really enjoyed learning about Kyla-Rose and her boys 😉. Ever since I saw the cover for this book, I wanted it.
I feel like this book has really set the stage for the rest of the books to follow, kind of like a prequel.
That cliffhanger!? Girl?!? What are you doing to me! I pressed next page so fast, and there was no more story!
Kyla-Rose is the part of the crime family the Swallow’s. She heads up the organisation and has her cousin, Charlie, as her right hand man. Kyla and Charlie both have these ‘monsters’ within them, when they come out, there is no stopping them.
One of Kyla’s cousin’s, Cam, runs a fight club on Friday nights. Kyla watched occasionally and ends up meeting Kacey at a fight, when she told him to get out of the changing rooms and he wouldn’t, tension got real hot, real fast!
Kacey and Kyla have a undeniable connection, when he invites her out and she meets his friends, one of which seems familiar. Who is this guy? Where does she know him from?
Kyla had a rough start in her life, with her mum being dead and her father in prison, she had to fight for herself. Thankfully her cousins have always been there to help her through.
⚠️ Some Trigger Warnings, make sure to check these out before you read. However, the difficult subjects have been covered and written really well. 🤌🏻
Wow! Really enjoyed this 🖤 If you love a strong anti-heroine who has moments of vulnerability, imperfection, and brokenness - which is not at all a weakness - plus psycho characters who let their inner demons off their leash and have a fierce love and loyalty to chosen family, definitely recommend picking this one up. This is the author's debut and I will definitely be reading more.
*WIP Review*
Dark contemporary RH with anti-heroes and psycho characters. FMC with past trauma and abuse (referenced but not detailed on page). FMC with BDE and boss b*tch persona in her role with family's crime syndicate, as enforcer and learning the ropes to take over one day. FMC is 25 while the Hs appear to be a few years older, late 20s. Hs are established best friends.
Multi-POV, though most chapter POVs are of the FMC.
Fast-ish burn and medium build - pretty quick to love and quick to the steam after meeting. While I'm not usually a fan of quick to love, there's still a feeling of connection built beyond the insta-connection.
I love love love her relationships with her cousins and how each feels unique, but I'm particularly loving Charlie and hope to see more of him in this series and maybe even his own 🖤
I don't usually comment on editing in my reviews, but I did find myself pulled out of the story several times as a result, impacting my reading experience and enjoyment. I chalk it up to newbie author and debut, and it's something IMO a good editor would have smoothed out. Like there will be the same thing said four different ways, and instead of blending the best bits and cutting down... It's just all left in, which, at least for me, detracted from the story rather than adding to it. The writing was great. Just needs some polishing.
Oh. My. God. Okay this book is a MESS and I mean that in the best way.
It’s a mess. But by that I mean it’s messy - realistically so. Life is MESSY - especially if you’re a member of a criminal family. Kyla-Rose is the picture of hot mess express, but she doesn’t let anyone see it. She can’t. She’s set to take over the family business alongside her cousin Charlie. Being seen as a mess is not going to give her the control and power she needs in that position. Deep down though? Hot. Ass. Mess. Aren’t we all though? I feel this - I’m a hot mess too and while I’m not set to take over an empire of any sort at all - I still can’t let everyone see it. If that isn’t a relatable mess then I don’t know what is.
But then there are boys. Hot ones. A couple of them. And 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. I’m pretty sure I spontaneously combusted. I’m not sure I can even function properly anymore. Comments on the steam factor? Let’s just say my husband enjoyed the perks from my reading of this book. Take from that what you will 😉
This book ends on a cliffhanger because of course it does. It’s a series and this is book one. I honestly can’t wait to see how it unfolds in book two!
A HUGE thank you to the author for the ARC for this one!!
I would not have believed that this was the author’s debut novel after finishing this book. There were interesting, complex and easily distinguishable characters, a plot that had you wanting to know more and a little cliffhanger to pique your interest for the next book.
What I really enjoyed about this book is the abundance of memorable characters, other than just the FMC and her love interests. I loved the FMC and how she was strong, smart and still human. But I also loved getting to know the other characters, seeing how they interacted with each other and their place within the story. Each character was easily distinguishable and memorable in their own way so I really appreciate the skill of the author in doing that. Also, I wouldn’t say no to a spin-off of some of them.
There was a lot of world building, creating new plot points and introducing characters in this book, as expecting for the first book in the series. I liked the little mysteries and glimpses of the pasts of characters we were given that will continue to drive the story into the next book.
A great debut novel and I can’t wait to read more from this author.
This book was so good🙂↕️ 2 men yearning over 1 woman? Count me in 🤪
I knew as soon as i started this, that i was going to love it🥹 Kyla is the baddest bitch, doesn’t take any shit and knows exactly what she wants.. a few screws loose, which makes her the most loveable character 🫣🥲
We met Kace and i was certain that he was it, THE ONE, ya know? Then Huxley comes in and oop there goes the rest of my sanity 🤪 I was giggling and kicking my feet throughout the majority of this book, these men know exactly what they’re doing 🤌🏻
Also, Kyla & Charlies bond is the exact amount of love and care with a touch of fuckery, i love them ☹️ Chaos twins is exactly what they are 🤭
Cam, you’re just misunderstood king 👑 Jacob, i know you love her but i fear you’re starting to pmo 🫵🏻
I just KNEW the plot was building for something big, with all of Kyla’s trauma being revealed little by little, i knew something was coming… but holy that cliffy had me *very nearly* launching my book across the room 😩😂
I’m going straight into book 2 because i genuinely can’t wait for Kyla to fully lose her shit, go fucking mental girly, I’ve got your back 🫶🏻
Wow - this is a great debut novel! There’s so much to explore within this world. Purgatory introduces the Swallow Family. The only girl in the crime syndicate family is Kyla-Rose. She’s a psycho path - openly admits it to herself. Kyla-Rose crosses paths with Kacey and finally doesn’t want to kill a guy that’s interested in her. At a party with Kacey, she meets Huxley (Kacey’s friend and roommate). Kyla-Rose’s harem is expected to grow through out the series, but for now it’s just Kacey and Huxley.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ It started off slow, but about 30% in I was hooked. Kyla-Rose owns her crap. She knows she’s a mess and psycho. She also has a lot of damage from her past. Between a broken heart from her childhood love and a horrific stint in juve, it’s no surprise that she enjoys hurting bad people (she tends to go for pedophiles and other generally bad people). Kacey and Huxley are a breath of fresh air in her world. Both have their own darkness, but they bring much needed safety and love to Kyla-Rose’s life. It definitely gave me all the feels. Now that cliffhanger….. I need the second book like yesterday!
Kyla-Rose is such a badass!!! She takes no crap, isnt afraid to get bloody, and is currently shadowing her Uncle Dee, the Boss of the family, so she can take over when he is ready to "retire". They are involved in all kinds of illegal things, but don't tolerate bad drugs, the skin trade, or harm to children.
At a Friday Fight Night, she meets a fighter that is crazy hot, and tells her that he likes her while she holds a gun to his head 😂 my first thought was he has to be in the harem!! Kyla-Rose also starts getting threatening letters and the way they are worded seems like the person knows her. She hits it off with Kacey(the fighter) and meets his best friend and roommate Huxley, who she also has a connection with.
Kacey and Huxley are enamoured by Kyla-Rose right away. They are bounty hunters on the side, so they dont have an issue with her being part of thr Swallow family. I swear, these guys are her soulmates. They are so sweet with her, build her up, and help so much with her trauma. They are just all meant to be.
I absolutely love this book!!! Kyla-Rose is the most badass FMC I have read in a while. I love her guys, I love how close she is with all her cousins, I just love it all!! The plot will keep you turning pages, the spicy scenes are panty melting hot, and that cliffhanger has me so excited for book 2! I cant even believe that this is K.L. Taylor-Lanes debut novel!! It is AMAZING!! This is a book you guys HAVE to read!!!!
A top read of the year for me! I was sucked into this book so hard that I'm finding it hard to find my words. Purgatory is the first book in the Swallows and Psychos trilogy. Kyla-Rose Swallow is a badass FMC that can only be classified as deranged and unhinged while covered in tattoos and a thirst to "work". Her family, The Swallow Family Syndicate, is not one to be messed with as they are all clearly on another level with their inner demons, Kyla and Charlie holding the lead roles.
Her trauma weighs a ton and has contributed to the woman she is today, but it also comes with its own issues regarding her past and present. She finds it hard to connect to any person, let alone not one but two men. It's an instant attraction and heated addiction. They complete a piece of her that she thought she would never get back and show her a different way of opening herself to views on things. Hux and Kace are absolutely perfect, I cannot get enough of them and how they put Kyla as their priority together. But what happens when Kyla's life gets turned upside down by the one person who ruined her first?
Picked for the cover because damn that's so cool. I liked it. Towards the end things started clicking into place. A crime syndicate with a lot of demons but a lot of love. Kyla-Rose is violent, caring and doted on by overprotective cousins and her Uncle Dee. It felt like Jacob went too far with his analyzing. Two guys and likely a third waiting in the wings. Dark themes. Cliffhanger but one that was expected. Curious about Charlie. Looking forward to the next one.

This is KL's debut and it reads far from it! The character and world building is amazing. It's mysterious, bit bloody, raw and gritty, oh and SPICY!
I think I want to marry Kyla-Rose... She is the perfect stabby fmc. I love her relationship with her fellow Chaos Twin, Charlie is perfect. They understand each other's trauma, but also encourage each others psychotic side.
Huxley, Kacey and Kyla-Rose are 🥵🥵 the chemistry is 🔥🔥🔥 They are perfect. They both fit her brand 🤣🤣
There is still a lot we don't know about Kyla-Rose's past. We got some high level snippets, but her trauma is so deeply rooted. I felt like I was picking up crumbs along the way go piece her life together, and then BAM! Her reality comes crashing down.
That cliffhanger! I thought that would be it! Ahhhhhh! I can't wait for more! KL has me hooked on these characters and falling head over heels for them! Amazing debut, I cannot wait to see what you bring us next! 🖤🖤
I have a huge obsession with Kyla-Rose! She is the baddest bad-ass and her crazy calls to my little black heart!! She’s insanely fierce and a whole lot psychotic, but when she’s not being the Boss, her vulnerable part shines so bright that you can’t not love her. She is such an incredible, complex character that K.L. brought to life.
I love how this RH is playing out and how we have yet to meet them all. Kacey and Huxley make my heart flutter and panties wetter so I can only imagine who else K.L. is going to throw in the mix!!
And ummmmm the relationship Kyla-Rose has with the fam is EVERYTHING!! Omg I love the Swallows so hard and can’t wait for more Charl!!
Congrats on a brilliant debut and can’t wait to get my greedy hands on more of your books!!!
My devious little heart was so content with these pages.
Kyla-Rose is the perfect fmc. She's a wee bit psychotic, a whole load of effed up and an absolutely bad @$$. Those men. The tattoos. The piercings. The size. 🔥🥵🔥 don't mind me whilst I fan myself over here!
It's not all dark and dirty however, the one liners throughout this book had me smirking and my family questioning what the hell I was reading.
Charlie, Charlie, Charlie - he spoke to my soul. I can't wait to hear his story!
K.L as a debut you should be so effing proud. This story is amazing and I can't wait to see where book 2 takes us!
Fantastic debut novel, the first swallows and psychos book gives you everything you could possibly want from mysterious psychos who keep you intrigued to the off the charts chemistry that has you fanning yourself. I absolutely love Kayla Rose the only female in the Swallow family and the deep protectiveness her cousins have over her despite her crazy psycho vibes. Her guys have her back, she has this almost instant connection to them yet she knows it’s going to be rough with who she is. I loved seeing into the past and overall just can’t wait to see what will come next especially with what happened at the end of this book!
The duck. I want to talk about a duck name Dillon. I want one. I am not even going to lie, I need Dillon in my life. This book honestly took me by storm and I am super impressed that for a debut novel, it hit EVERY SINGLE MARK NEEDED. If I could rate more stars I would. It’s psychos on top of psychos on top of psychos and I AM SO HERE FOR IT!
I devoured this book so fast I couldn't even believe it! I had to read it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. I loved the FMC and how she could hold her own while still being human. I really enjoyed the abundance of memorable characters, other than just the FMC and her love interests. I loved getting to know her cousins & uncle and seeing how they interacted with each other. Each character was easily distinguishable and memorable in their own way and that made it even more interesting and unique!
K.L. Taylor did not disappoint and I can't wait to see how the plot continues in the next book. Soooo deliciously good!
Insta love. No real character development. FMC says she’s a badass but her actions don’t really support that…which is fine too. I almost DNF’d but I hate not finishing a story. The love interests were boring. I was more interested in Kyla’s cousins. There’s a mystery surrounding someone stalking/threatening Kyla. But it’s barely explored.
