Jordan Rivera is a 16 y.o. teen on vacation with his family , he is frustrated with his parents for made him take care of his younger twin brothers, when a painting in a museum attracts his attention , pullng him into another world.

This is a kind of typical portal fantasy with a D&D flavor, in fact some nonchalant aspects of Jordan's behaviour in that situation give thought to him thinking somehow similar, no of a moment of 'wait - i'm-going-to-die, no more phones , internet or friends' instead is more like 'yay -no more babysitting , i'm going to be a knight'.

The drawing is not much to my liking in general, but the colors are okay.

When Jordan goes to a museum with his family (not enjoying himself, as his parents expect him to watch his younger brothers), he sees a cool painting and steps into a magical world. He saves the prince and decides to become a knight, meanwhile discovering some buried secrets of the kingdom.

This sounds amazing, right? But alas, this graphic novel is a prime example of a good idea, good potential but poor execution. This story is absolutely way too short to be able to achieve what it is trying to. This feels more like a draft, or just simply a rundown of what happens in a much longer story. The pacing is really fast, but we don't actually learn anything throughout the story.

This novel is only about 16o pages long, and because it's trying to cram a whole fantasy world in those 160 pages, many things are left to the imagination. There is simply not enough time to either form a connection with the characters - as we don't really get to know them; or even get engrossed in the world - as we don't get to see a lot of it. There are too many things happening, and too fast. There is simply no time to connect to the story. There are too many action scenes, and too few explanations and world-building. After finishing this book you are left with more questions than answers.

Even Jordan, the main character, doesn't feel fleshed out. He seems to think of this as a fun little adventure, but his reactions just strike me as unrealistic. There is violence and assassins, but he never seems to realize the gravity of the situations he finds himself in. All of his decisions are spur-of-the-moment, impulsive ones, and he doesn't seem to consider them at all. I do not think this was intentional, I think this is due to the shortness of the novel.

His relationships with other characters are also underdeveloped. Things are implied, and we are able to guess what the book intended to do, but I wish we had gotten more. Especially Jordan's relationship with the prince - I thought it was cute, but I didn't really grow attached to it. It seemed simply like the beginning of something and not like an already developed relationship.

However, I do think the story had potential, and I liked the idea of it. Had the story been longer I would've enjoyed it much more. I love the art style, it's absolutely beautiful. The color palette is also amazing, and I did very much enjoy that aspect of this novel.

Unfortunately, this book was simply too rushed and, therefore, quite underwhelming. I wish I could say I enjoyed it more, but sadly I didn't. Reading it felt more like reading a work in progress, a draft rather than a finished graphic novel.

Jordan during a visit to a museum🏛️ teleports☄️ to fantasy world🦄, where he saves pretty blondie elf🧝‍♂️.

That's basically it. It felt rushed, but was boring at the same time. The first 50 pages was okey, but at the rest I caught myself skimming through dialogues. 😴

This comic was only 160 pages long, so I understand it might felt rushed, but I didn't feel the chemistry between our blondie 🧝‍♂️ and lost boy at all. And I mean AT ALL.

Though I am probably not the target audience I found this light fantasy romp quite bland. The art was nice, to be fair, and it was nice to see the protagonist's filipino and queer representation.

it's extremely rushed and not a single thing that happens is explained, not even a little bit. you can't just pretend your fantasy book is good because you threw in lots & lots of action scenes!

In the Shadow of the Throne sounded like it had a lot of potential, but it never quite managed to live up to it. It's very rushed and I didn't get a good sense of the characters or the fantasy world. It seems like it should be a small part of a much larger story, but it's only a standalone.

This is one of my first graphic novel reading and i liked it!
The story is simple (it's a standalone) but really cute and I enjoyed it! Jordan is a young boy who gets sucked into an another world. There casually he meets and saves the life of the prince. And then his adventure begins, between swords, fantastic beasts and court intrigues. Obviously the story is very short, but mostly focused on the two characters and their interactions.
I found the graphic very simple but nice, nothing too challenging. The story is very nice, smooth and fun! I have a very nice time reading this one!

Did this awaken a new era of me reading graphic novels??? Yes, yes it did.

To be fair, it is a very short graphic novel, so many things happen really fast. There is no room for gradual development and it, therefore, makes the story feel rushed. It is in no way near a unique concept, but it still held my interest and the illustrations were really cool. I could definitely see this as a longer graphic novel or even a novel--the story really has a lot of potential.

This is a cute little graphic novel. I liked how Jordan's design and initial scenario set up the things we'd need to know about him going in -- he's gay (rainbow pin), he's into dungeons & dragons (d20 t-shirt), and he's tired of being parentified instead of being treated as one of his parents' children at age 17. So when he randomly gets sucked into another world where he saves the life of a beautiful elf prince, I could believe he'd want to stick with it.

That said, I often found his reactions unbelievable throughout the story. He felt like he was being roleplayed in a D&D game rather than a real character -- there was no point where he seemed to realize what he'd got himself into (which I figured would happen when he saw someone actually stabbed and dying, and had to fight the person who'd done it), and his emotional reactions felt muted in general, his decisions arbitrary. I can see the emotional beats the story's going for, but they don't always land.

I also found the ending a bit of a let down -- the decision he made at the end, I mean. There was already a sense that events weren't having the emotional impact that they should, and that underscored it for me.

But the art was cute, and I'm always here for a gay & nerdy fantasy adventure.

My thanks to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

I usually try to wait until the publishing date is closer to review books I receive from NetGalley, but this one has been on my "currently reading" list for months and I want to do my review before I forget this entirely.

The artwork wasn't bad and it has both POC and LGBTQ rep, but that's about all I can say for it.

I agree with another reviewer who said that this was both went by too quickly and was also boring. The pacing is what kept it from being anything more then "meh" for me. There is NO inkling of the attraction between the the two MCs and then at the end BAM! We like each other!

Also, despite having NEVER fought with a sword before, the MC who was portalled into the fantasy world is all gung-ho to be a knight and can fight with a minimum amount of training and he isn't really scared of getting hurt or worse? And he's ok with killing others brutally with a sword in close combat should he have to fight?

I guess if he is 16 years old, he's not really concerned with the consequences of his decisions yet, but that seems rude to say about 16 year olds. I tend to think that children and teenagers are a lot smarter than adults give them credit for.

Anywho, I didn't hate this, but it had major pacing issues and would benefit by having more added to it I think.

2, had potential, stars.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to review this book.

.

The premise of this graphic novel isn't new to me, as someone who has read a lot of transmigration, isekai and reincarnation manhua/ mahwa but still I was lookin forward to it.

The art is really impressive and catchy for me, the most thing I did liked on this graphic novel.

I think the potential of this graphic novel was wasted because of rush of plot and lack of development among the characters and the romance aside from the plot. It ended up pretty much wasted and boring for me, especially the climax which really felt anticlimatic.

Picked this book up on a whim at the library and enjoyed it for what it was, a quick, straight to the point fantasy graphic novel. Nothing too groundbreaking. I did feel like some plot points could’ve been more fleshed out but I’m not disappointed that I read it.

When his family becomes too much to bear while on vacation, Jordan tries to get some space. But instead of wandering around the local museum, Jordan finds himself dropped into a fantasy world where he can finally have fun - but there might be more problems than he originally thoughts.

The story was lacking too much for me to really enjoy this one. Between the pacing being way too fast (especially in the beginning) and the characters making illogical choices I was left with wanting more. It felt more like a good first draft than a finished story. I wasn't impressed with any of the twists and mostly was just taking in by the beautiful artwork.

I found the is artwork absolutely amazing. Some of my favorite that I has ever seen. The colorist did such an amazing job throughout the entre story and each page was a total masterpiece. This is definitely in my top five favorite artworks for graphic novels.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Diamond Book Distributors for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jordan is tired of always being his younger siblings' default babysitter, so he's excited to finally be on his own when his family's trip to a museum results in him somehow being transported to a fantasy world via a painting. In this new world, he trains as a knight and helps a young elven prince deal with a dark magic threat against his kingdom that is somehow connected to the queen's past.

The story was very basic and rushed. It made zero sense to me that a barely trained wannabe knight was sent after a trained assassin with the prince in tow and no one else. There wasn't a lot of time to flesh everything out, and even the light romantic elements felt like a bit much considering that Jordan and Astel didn't get along for a large chunk of the volume.

Although I liked the monster design, for the most part the artwork wasn't to my taste. There were too many issues with anatomy and perspective.

This was sadly not for me. Never really felt like I got into the story, and then it was suddenly over. Didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters either (that I didn't care much about from the start, anyway).

I did however like the art style.

I got this eArc from Netgalley.

The artwork is absolutely beautiful - full color and expressive. But unfortunately, it doesn't make up for a bland retread story that just isn't developed well. So although this is a quick and ok read, it is also incredibly boring because we've seen it before in so many iterations.

Story: At a NYC Museum, teen Jordan is constantly forced to watch his crazy younger twin brothers while his parents do other things. He's tired of being the 'secondary parent" and wants to do things on his own. When he finally grabs a chance to wander off, he is suddenly transported to a fantasy kingdom of Elves. When he saves a young prince from wolves, he discovers the prince's darkest secret and becomes embroiled in their politics.

In many ways, the writing feels lazy here. No attempt is really given to explain the sudden shift to a magical realm, the fantasy painting of elves in a NYC public museum, or even the world of the elves. The elves themselves are simplistic, lacking in depth or character, and really needing more development. Lead character Jordan also suffers greatly from feeling almost childlike in his perception of life, danger, and his circumstances. No, we don't need super serious or anything; all the same, this feels like how a 7 year old looks at life. It reminds me a lot of the Dragon Prince series - but lacks the humor, emotion, and originality.

The artwork is really beautiful. That lovely illustration work is accompanied by inspired coloring that really makes the artwork pop. It's digital work at its best. Even the lettering is clean and unobtrusive. The book was much better to look at than read.

We've seen way too many plots of this type - even going back to Twain and his Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The LGBQT angle doesn't make this original and certainly is so underdeveloped as to be non existent. Nor do we see a reason why Jordan would be attracted to the petulant, rude, and unresponsive prince - other than good looks?

In all, there just isn't enough here. More time was greatly needed on the story and to develop the characters. Lovely artwork didn't make up for the tepid story. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

|| Thank you to NetGalley and Diamond Book Distributors for providing me this arc in exchange for an honest review ! ||

❤️ I first want to say that I love the art, may it be with the lines, characters, background and colors, everything was really well done (and I'm particularly picky even if I'm getting used to different styles). As for the story, I really loved how Jordan came into the world of Lymeira, it was really original! I would have loved Ysengrim's story to be more developed, but the one we got was really interesting already. It's a pretty simple story and there's nothing bad with this, I enjoyed it in a time I just wanted to dive into a beautiful world and a story of a prince, wolf, and knights!

💔 As it's a graphic novels, it goes fast, but a little too fast in my opinion. I'd have prefered to see a "Few days later" instead of "The next day" when it comes to the knight's training, or perhaps a little story about Jordan's blood/genes that makes him powerful. I also didn't feel a chemistry between Astel and Jordan, I wish we could have seen it during the whole story.

Overall it was a very short graphic novel perfect for those who want to escape to a beautiful world and a quick and easy story about a gay knight and prince, and an evil creature to fight !

Dungeons & Dragons meets Narnia in a heartfelt fantasy adventure filled with crisp artistry and a gripping story!

As you are well aware I am a huge fan of Mad Cave Studios and their YA partner Maverick and I am once again delighted to be given an opportunity to read and review another masterpiece graphic novel!

In The Shadow of the Throne is a fantasy storytelling of adolescence, romance, family and magic. Kate Sheridan and the whole creative team have scored a hit with this graphic novel. A beautifully artistic world of expertly crafted environments and character compliment the vivid storytelling in what is a gripping adventure. I could not put this down!

What lies ahead for you in the panels is heartfelt character interactions, magic wielding mages, swordplay of the most regal type and deceit on the grandest scale.

In the Shadow of the Throne will be a must for fantasy fans of all varieties and I really hope you add this to your pull list!

I absolutely adored this graphic novel! It was a really good quick read that didn't feel too short. The story is fleshed out really well and the relationship between Jordan (our MC) and Prince Astel (our LI) feels very natural. The art is beautiful and I enjoyed reading about Jordan's journey in this new world full of swordplay and magic. I really hope we get to see a sequel, but if not, it's okay since the author wrapped everything up so well. I also really loved and appreciated the Filipino representation in this graphic novel, like younger characters using Tagalog in conversation or the dad wearing the flag, it made me very happy to see!

Thanks so much to Netgalley for this arc!

I would like to thank Mad Cave Studios for providing me with an ARC.

This book is enjoyable, however I found that it was lacking in a lot of areas. I would have loved to have seen this story stretched out longer. With how short it was, there just wasn't enough room for proper character development and proper worldbuilding. The main character is easy to connect with, but we don't get much from him in terms of development. There was also not sufficient amount of time given to his knight training. He is somehow instantly able to use a sword with few problems. The story itself, while enjoyable, doesn't deliver and the ending was a letdown. I really wanted to like this book and I liked the art. However, I just wanted more from it.
