Oh dear, it's basically a Civil War tie-in. Sigh. I'm on record as hating the Civil War stuff, so I wasn't thrilled to see that this was involved. It was blatantly obvious that Deadpool was only pro-Registration because the editors needed to maintain their artificial 50/50 split and there was no way in hell they could finesse Cable being on the pro side. Don't get me wrong, I buy that Deadpool would take a paycheck to hunt down unregistered heroes, and have fun doing it. And the arguments he spouted in favor of the act do make some sense, on the surface. But I don't for one moment buy Deadpool as actually believing them. Editorial just needed somebody in this book to say them. This is all aside from the fact that the government hiring a seasoned assassin (that would be Deadpool) to literally hunt down anybody who has the unmitigated gall to stop a purse snatcher without having the proper permit in place is the perfect illustration of everything that was wrong with the Registration act in the first place.

The first part of this volume is a Civil War tie-in with our two main characters on opposite sides. There are some pretty funny fourth-wall breaking gags here, even though it is mostly just one big fight. The second half of the book, well, just didn't make a lot of sense to me, and just seemed strange. Not one of the better Deadpool books.

I'm shocked at how many four and five star reviews there are for this hacky garbage comic. Maybe it's just that readers who like nuanced storytelling and jokes that are actually funny instead of random pop culture references that Nicieza makes over and over again because he hasn't had a new idea since 1994, saw a Rob Liefeld cover and Fabien Nicieza's name on the spine and realized there was no god reason to read it.

This putrid non-story ties into Civil War but not in a fun or interesting way. Deadpool decides he wants to help with the Mutant Registration Act, only he doesn't know who's on which side. Ha ha. He battles the Great Lakes Avengers/Champions and gets peoples' names wrong. Chortle chortle. Everyone can hear his narration boxes because he's speaking them aloud. *RoFGoMOT* (Rolling on Floor, Gagging on My Own Tongue) Then he and Cable might be on the same side, they might be on different sides, just like EVERY SINGLE ISSUE of Cable & Deadpool.

Wrestling fans are likely familiar with the name of Vince Russo. A talentless hack, writer who spawned Car Crash TV for wrestling. Every story was twist after twist until every twist was the twist you knew was coming because every new twist was just an old twist retwisted. It was interesting for a few weeks but the man found work for over a decade despite never evolving as a writer or having an idea beyond "and then the good guy will turn out to be a bad guy". He's widely regarded as the worst writer ever associated with pro wrestling.

Fabien Nicieza is about a tenth as talented as Vince Russo.

There isn't a funny gag or redeeming plot point in this book.

If you see this book in a store, bring it to the counter so they can spray it with bug poison, put it in a metal container and set it on fire.

Continuing the great X-read of 2017 that has now stretched into 2018...

Okay. So I am way behind on reviewing these x-books that I have been reading. So I am going to just kind of ramble about all of them and copy/paste my thoughts. Which will make for a bit of a mess and I am sorry. Quick ramblings:

Cable and Deadpool continues to be surprisingly good though a little more scattered in these couple of volumes.
X-Men the Blood of Apocalypse was rushed in my opinion...
Phoenix Warsong was pretty decent. Melodramatic but not a bad story. (and when is a Phoenix story not melodramatic?)
New X-Men is a good series with some great characters that grow volume by volume.
Uncanny First Foursaken was not my cup of tea really.
Black Panther: The Bride was probably much better to BP readers. As part of an X-Men run, it can probably be skipped.
Wolverine Origins born in blood was not particularly memorable.
Astonishing X-Men will possibly get its own review as it is a reread and interesting as such...
Civil War was one of the first times in my life that I could say that the movie was better than the book. For the most part, it was really boring to me. The X-Men universe tie-ins were only slightly more interesting to me.
X-factor continues to be a delight.
Exiles continues to be great.

I need to get back to writing reviews of these as I finish them. Reading them in quick succession like this, I begin to forget what happened in individual books (which I suppose equally speaks to the books themselves and my memory...)

I thought issues 30-32 which were Civil War tie-ins were probably the strongest part of this volume and 33-35 were weaker. Also, the penciller change didn't help. Cable & Deadpool has been up and down for me throughout but it has always been fun regardless so hopefully the next volume will be another positive.

Turns out Civil War was exactly what this title needed. The relationship between Cable and Deadpool needed some kind of wrench thrown in it, and man did it wreak havoc on them. I wasn't crazy about the art, but the writing was strong.

They had a great Civil War tie in! Everything about it just fit. I love it how Nathan continues to care for Wade eventhough it is not always easy. The relationship between those two is really amazing and a great read.

During the Civil War event (the first one) Cable declares himself neutral, while Wade embraces the chance to work for the government as a bounty hunter. He is supposed to catch superpowered individuals who refuse to register for the Superhuman Registration Act.

This volume was surprisingly dark for a book that is so often humorous. The first half is more or less directly tied into the Civil War event with Cable helping the anti-registration side discreetly at first and Deadpool signing up for the pro-registration side for the paycheck and respectability. The latter half of the book focuses on the fallout from the inevitable conflict and manipulations that the two characters go through. Deadpool really gets close to rock bottom in this volume, while some tensions are clearly building for Cable, despite his coming out of the conflict looking good on a national stage. The final issue is a bit of a departure, with Wade trying to build his mercenary credibility back up only to fail and decide to give super heroics a try again. Overall, this didn't have as many jokes, but was a lot more character-oriented, which I enjoyed.

Is it just me, or is the brief synopsis for a graphic novel harder to write than for a book? Is it because there’s a very basic story line that is dragged out over several comics? Maybe it’s because when you write a synopsis you give out too many spoilers? I don’t know. But I am open to your thoughts.
Paved With Good Intentions is full of twists and turns. It was definitely the most interesting Cable and Deadpool that I have read! Filled with great art and lots of humour (Deadpool is brilliant for this), I can see why Ross loves this series so much.
My only negative feedback is that you really have to read all of it in order to truly understand it. It really isn’t a stand alone.
My recommendation: Read it all in order, it makes more sense.

I started reading Cable & Deadpool for the snark and the unlikely friendship between the two. I never realized I would be reading the anatomy of an unhealthy relationship. I'm hoping that Nicieza will be able to make this relationship a tad healthier while keeping it odd and insane, because I so don't want to give up a fun book because of bad relationship politics.

Otherwise, I enjoyed this trade much more than vol. 5, Living Legends. The mix of action, exposition, relationship, and fun was just right.

I must say that reading Cable and Deadpool was refreshing and fun. The writing was top as was the art. What was so unique about this series were the two main characters themselves, namely Deadpool with his abilty to break the fourth wall, leading to some of the most hilarious jokes. The series started off a bit slow but progressed fast enough to earn a place in my top 10 comic book series. The ending itself was very touching somehow. This is the only comic book series that, in my opinion, deserves a 5/5 rating. Kudos, Fabian Nicieza!

This review is over the entire series' run.

I absolutely LOVE the Civil War tie-in. Deadpool working for the US government as a bumbling fool with a badge is awesome and the appearance of the Great Lake 'Champions' was a great choice. This group of comics ends with a story centered around the Six-Pack and trouble in Rumekistan which is very well done.

Absolutely loved this set and looking forward to the next.

Finally, a good volume with proper story. I really like the tie-in stories with Civil War. Kind of a blast from the past.

Definitely not my favorite volume. The civil war tie-in is meh, although I really enjoyed the way Cable and Wade interacted in these issues. I enjoy their "friendship" very much and the post divorce jokes tug at the heartstrings just a bit.

Not bad. More of Cable being mutant jesus / Deadpool playing the assmonkey. The art took a noticeable change/downturn.

35 Cable shows Deadpool the people he's killed.
36 Deadpool vs Taskmaster, is a great issue. (but vol7 says it includes 36 so I don't know if it's even included here)
