Lyn grew up loving books. Her favorite night of the week was Friday night, when the Bookmobile came to her neighborhood in Illinois. She’d spend those two hours chatting with the driver of the Bookmobile and the librarian and making the big decision of the week — which books to check out! In those distant days, children were limited in how many books they could check out. Lyn could only take home six a week — and there were so many to choose from. Her favorites were Cotton in my Sack by Lois Lenski, The Little House series and the One of a Kind Family series. Later, she discovered Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances! This love of books led to a desire to write. Lyn won prizes in high school and college for her poetry and, not surprisingly, Lyn became a history and English teacher. When she became a mother, she gave up teaching, and while raising a son and a daughter, she began working on her first novel. Then she wrote her second and third. Long years of rejection followed — as it does for most writers. Finally in 1997, Lyn got "the call." Her first book, Never Alone, was chosen to appear in the first year of the new Love Inspired line. Lyn has written many articles on writing and the emerging Christian Booksellers Assoc. (CBA) fiction market. In 2006, Lyn's book, Chloe, is a finalist for the RWA's RITA, the highest award in the romance genre in the inspirational category. Now, Lyn spends her days writing books that show the power of divine as well as human love. Her nest is empty and she and her real life hero, her husband, have more and more time to spend together in their home on a lake in the lovely northwoods. And books are still dear to her heart.
Bitter Autumn is book two in the Northern Shore Intrigue series, yet it can be read as a stand alone novel if you have not read book one, Precarious Summer.
I felt very sorry for Grey as he returned home. He was obviously repentant and had changed his ways, yet there were quite a few very angry people who continually bullied and confronted him as he tried to go about his life. I was impressed by Trish’s ability to see the new man that Grey had become. It was also refreshing to see that some of the community was able to forgive the past and try to welcome Grey home.
It was hard to watch as someone tried to set Grey up, over and over again, in order to get him sent back to prison or at least force him to feel as if he should move away. But I thought that the sheriff’s department did an excellent job of investigating every event.
This book really showcased the effects that bitterness, anger, and even guilt can have on people and pointed out that true change can be found by turning to God for strength.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
*This book was previously published in 2007 as Dangerous Game through Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense*
Love this series! I was happy to return to this town for another great read with great characters. My heartstrings were tugged in this tale of betrayal and what it takes to move forward.
I received a complimentary copy from the author but was not required to review.
Going Home. Deputy Sheriff Trish Franklin quits her job in Madison to go home to Winfield. Her widowed father is not doing well and she needs to be close. She is the only girl and youngest. Grey Lawson's elderly aunt, Elsie, is not in good health. Grey has spent seven years in prison for driving drunk and killing two people. Aunt Elsie brought up Grey after his parents left. She is well thought of and loved by many of the townspeople. Others hate Grey for what he did, especially relatives of the two killed. His prison term is cut short to allow him to go back to Winfield to care for Aunt Elsie.
When Trish was driving home she sees Grey walking to his Aunt Elsie's home. She stops, picks him up, it is a cold day. While driving him, she finds her brother had hit a deer and was hurt. Grey helps Trish drive her brother to the hospital. She gets to know him, is attracted to him as he is to her. They don't dare let each know his or her feelings. One of the people killed was Trish's Uncle Jake, her father's twin brother. Her father hates this man.
There is Young Jake, named after his deceased great uncle, the boy was born not long after Big Jake was killed. A very troubled seven year old, he runs away, hides in the forest. he goes back and forth between his parents, his mother is using drugs, loses her temper with him. Yet he loves her.
An older couple, very sweet people, Shirley and Tom get married after dating for some time. There are those with unhappy marriages.
Grey will not leave Winfield, not take Aunt Elsie away from her home, her friends, her church, the town she loves. On one occasion he visits and has dinner with a family, close knit, love their kids. This group gets together to watch ball games, have meals together. He wishes he could be a part of such a family. There are some in this town who wish he would leave, never come back.
Bitter Autumn by Lyn Cote Trish and her brother both work for the local sheriffs office, he being the head sheriff. She's puzzled by the game of chicken and how others are getting hurt on the foggy nights on the deserted roads out of town. Grey has also returned, served his time in jail for the crime he was committed of doing.... others want to see him gone and while the story is going on you also hear from the side of one who is trying to set him up for another murder. Kidnapping or a child has run away, the cops just know the child is gone and it's night time. Grey comes up wit the solution and he grabs Trish to help him out as it's her nephew.... Grey helps so many out that he can't be blamed for the recent traffic crashes and fatalities... Never expected some events to take place, it's so unpredictable. Several end up at the hospital with heart issues because they are under so much stress. So many secrets come to light and this is a high action adventure, bit of romance, solving crimes and a good all around story. Was on the edge of my seat through the whole book, couldn't read it fast enough. Like the ending when all is brought to the forefront and also leads you into the next book in the series. There is an excerpt of that also enclosed. Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
I received an ARC of this book from the author, Lyn Cote, via Bookfunnel and this is my voluntary and honest. I loved this romantic suspense between Grey and Trish in Winfield, Wisconsin. Trish is on the police force and Grey was just released from prison after serving seven years for causing the deaths of two people while driving drunk. Since Winfield is the town where the accident happened, most of the town is against his release. He only returned to his hometown because his Aunt is elderly and has Parkinson disease so needs his help. Several accidents happen after Grey returns home and they all duplicate how the original accident happened that put Grey in jail. Someone is trying to put the blame on Grey, but Trish who has started having feelings for Grey starts to investigate and prove his innocence. I could not put this book down. There are a lot of twists and turns in the investigation and wondering how Trish and Grey can pursue a relationship when she is a cop and he is a convicted felon on parole. The ending was a complete surprise and not what I was expecting but a good surprise. I highly recommend this book and it is the best book that this author has written.
Bitter Autumn by Lyn Cote Northern Shore Intrigue Series Book Two Grey Lawson has returned to Winfield, Wisconsin. A small town that isn't very forgiving. If not for his ailing aunt, he would've started life over somewhere else. But Aunt Elsie needed him. And her home, friends, church were all here. So, he came back. After seven years in prison...his wasn't a very welcome return.
Deputy Sheriff Trish Franklin didn't know Grey, but her family hated him. Knowing her dad would be upset to find out he was released...she was ready to warn him. Only life interrupted. And she found that she had trouble hating Grey Lawson once she met the man.
Trouble starts up when Grey returns. Things out of his control...but easily blamed on an ex-con. He just wants to be there for Elsie and live a quiet life. That's not going to happen in Winfield, though. I loved the story, the characters, all of it. Excellent, heartwarming series. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
This is a new author for me and i will be reading more of her books. This book is a Christian Suspense. Grey Lawson is returning to his home town to take care of his Aunt after spending seven years in prison. Right from the start, things don't go the way Grey hoped they would. He is hiking to his aunts house when a deputy stops and warns him about hitchhiking. Then offers to drive him to his aunts house. The Deputy is none other then the niece of the man he killed in a drunk driving accident that sent him to prison. Trish Franklin knew that Grey was coming back but was surprised that the man she picked up in her Police car was Grey. Then someone was playing chicken at the same place Grey had the accident that sent him to prison. There are plenty of people who don't want grey back in town but who would want him gone so back that they would try to injure someone and try to get Grey blamed. Can Trish and the Sheriff's Department fine out the truth before someone is killed?
Trish and Grey have lots of things stacked against them. With the copy cat incidents, everyone is wondering if Grey is responsible again. After all, he drove drunk and killed two people seven years ago. Trish falls for Grey despite all the obstacles that face them. Everything comes to a head when the person responsible for the crash seven years ago decides to knock Grey out and put him in the vehicle with his foot tied to the accelerator with the passenger door open so he can jump out before the collision. Who is responsible was a total surprise and how it all played out didn't quite go the way that person had expected. Happily ever after happened for Trish and Grey. Good story about holding grudges, being angry and trying to get revenge. Enjoyed the Christian comments throughout the book, especially the reminder that God died for our sins so we should let go of our guilt for God to heal us.
Her older brothers best friend returns and she finds love.
Enjoyed being back with this author again. Trish and Grey story was exciting. Their unexpected meeting on a lone dirt road. She being the one upholding the law he being the one breaking it. Her family not wanting to have anything to do with him. But something freak happening changed things. Grey was not wanted in the town by some. They wanted him to leave. But their were others who gave him a second chance. Trish was one of them. This caused love to bud between them. But Grey felt unworthy until the truth came out and he was set free. Both Trish and Grey had a great support system with Trish brothers, Grey aunt and their friends in the town. Will read more in the series.
This was an exciting, unforgettable book. One of the characters experiences a betrayal at the hands of a friend; it causes one to reflect on what it must have been like for Christ when he was betrayed by Judas. Some of the twists in the plot caught me by surprise. It was refreshingly unpredictable at times. Forgiveness and bitterness are both present dramatically in the lives of some of the characters, and the plot shows clearly the effect choosing one or the other has on the person's future.
I received an ecopy of this book from the author, but was not required to make a review. All opinions in this review are my own.
A returning convicted DWI guy who caused 2 deaths and a lady Deputy Sheriff are the main characters in this clean faith filled story. He only came bakc to care for his ailing aunt who had raised him and to say that the community was not happy to see him was an under statement. Grey Lawson was a changed man but many in his small town didn't care, but Deputy Trish Franklin could see that he had now committed his life to Christ and was attracted to him. This is a well writtten story that shows that a good writer can write a good interesting book without sex scenes. Lyn Cote hit it out of the park with this story.
A gripping book to see how a wee community has memories coming back by Grey Lawson coming to see his great-aunt Elsie. He was sentenced to prison because he was blamed for driving drunk and killing two people. Trish Franklin the first deputy in the county is finding it hard too. As a law officer she should see Grey as an ex felon. She is also the niece of one of the men killed. Lots of people in town keep saying horrible things to Grey and accuse him again of fog-shrouded evening to mimic his original crime. Can Trish sort this out? A very interesting ending too. This was a free book so I can do a review for it.
Bitter Autumn is a page turning Christian mystery romance with relatable characters (Trish and Grey), unexpected twists, intrigue of foggy nights, and a believable resolution. As a Michigander, I enjoy the Wisconsin setting. Trish as deputy: "The unfairness of what had happened and which had almost been repeated made her determined to help find out the truth." Lyn Cote is a talented writer, who blends descriptive passages with intrigue and fast paced action, family struggles with aging relatives, small town prejudices, betrayal, dealing with guilt, and the consequences of drunk driving and addiction. Yes, there is lots of North Shore Intrigue.
Lyn Cote's Bitter Autumn is an edge of your seat, do not expect to put it down adventure. I am always emotionally spent when I finish her books! Bitter Autumn should serve as a wake up call for anyone who thinks they have a right to dish out vengeance or those who refuse to forgive. The book is not preachy but reminds us that vengeance belongs to then Lord. This story is full of bitter, twisted people who are not doing well emotionally or physically. Yet it is not a depressing book. The characters are well portrayed and the plot is fascinating. You do not want to miss this book!
I've never been to Wisconsin, except through the writing of Lyn Cote. With every page I could feel the chill of autumn and taste the pasties in the diner in the small town. Getting to know Trish, who was a deputy in the background of book one in this series, is a readers treat. The dysfunctional families, the hurting people and Grey, trying to do the right thing on his early parole, make such vivid pictures in my mind and I couldn't stop reading. I've already bought the next book in this enjoyable series.
Loved the characters, the realism of life, and being super surprised at who the killer really was. Will definitely be finding more by this author, and for those of you like me who can’t tolerate a poorly proofread book, the spelling and grammar are good. Also this author is capable of writing a good story without all the horrible DRAMA going on in their heads about “O poor me, I don’t deserve happiness and I’m the only person in the world that had a troubled home life.”Keep up the good work Lyn Cote.
free ebook he got out of prison, he drunk drove and killed 2 people in his small hometown. he went back there to care for his sick aunt some of the people in town were very angry he came back and tried to get him arrested again by recreating the accident the cop was a girl who liked him and he liked her but they both knew they should keep away from each other

Trish and Grey's story. (maybe fiction but emotions ran high for the betrayal and a chunk of life that cannot be brought back.) Maybe short stories but packed with drama and mystery/suspense who the villain maybe? Not sure if I'm reading them in order but the characters of Winfield have shown up in the last books. I'm hoping I bought the whole series last year and reading now, while the new releases come.
This storyline captured my attention at the beginning with serious emergency in the first pages. Slowly you begin to understand what the situation is for the main character and from there you are traveling with him through all the ups and downs going on around him. This is very well written and the characters are real and we'll defined. This was an intense journey but well worth the trip.
Lynn did a great job keeping me guessing who was trying to frame Grey. However, her subtle foreshadowing eventually enlightened me to who the culprit was. Always a pleasure to read a well written novel that depends on actual writing talent instead of so many authors who feel the need to insert smut and steamy graphic sex to sell their books instead of choosing wholesome character development.
Just the kind I like. I didn't see that coming. A lot of times I figure it out early but I did not this time. Definitely a good read. And, oh the sweet forgiveness of Jesus, the precious gift of salvation...beautifully woven into this story. Trish is bold, and even a bit brash, but the truth and depth of her words are necessary, and quite endearing. I highly recommend this book!
Wow! What a great read! I literally could not put this book down. Went through a variety of emotions & thoughts as to who the culprit actually was. the fact that the Gospel was shared was a plus. Everyone's personalities were shown as normal average people & those with a strong faith had great character. Loved this book. I think you'll like this author.
This author is one of my “go to” writers for suspense with a touch of romance. Once again she has written a complex and fascinating story. You get family conflict that seems unsolvable. A mysterious "bad guy" (or is it a woman?). A history of guilt and remorse and hatred. This book has it all. I couldn't stop reading and finished it in a day!
Deputy Trish Franklin can't help herself, she's falling head over heels in love with the recently paroled on early release Grey Lawson. A deputy and a felon do not exactly go together! And there are nefarious, hate filled people trying to frame Lawson & return him to prison. It is a wild ride down a foggy road to figure out whodunit. Excellent read.
Some of the themes in this book include bitterness, anger, guilt as well as forgiveness, grace and even love. It's a story of Grey Lawson who returns home after serving only serving seven years of his sentence for the death of two people when he drove drunk back then. There are many twists and turns in this book. A great story!
This is a thrilling, intriguing adventure. It comes cover to cover with a captivating twisting plot, a feisty heroine and an underdog hero to cheer for, a cast of likeable characters supporting the lead characters, unexpected surprises on many pages and enough characters displaying deplorable bad behaviour that it is difficult for the reader to unmask the greatest villain before the author does.
I wasn’t going back to where it all happened but my Aunt who has been raising me since I was a lad, needs me now. I am getting out of prison and going to help her until she doesn’t need me and then I will leave. I hope I can care for her and not let the past, tear me down….
This story touched so many emotions for me. It is a story about the many faces of the human condition. Love, sweet and beautiful. Lies and betrayal. Bitterness and hate. And faith, and trust in God.....and how sometimes, even the most faithful are tested. I enjoyed this book very much.
