Sathiya Sam is an addiction recovery coach and the creator of DeepClean™—a research-based and Bible-backed system for overcoming porn addiction. A recovered addict himself, he has coached hundreds of men from around the world to regain control of their lives and walk in greater levels of freedom.
After struggling with pornography addiction for 15 years, Sathiya made a commitment to get free and then help as many men as possible experience the same freedom. After trying several mainstream solutions like internet filters and accountability partners without success, he became frustrated by the lack of resources available for those suffering from porn addiction. He then discovered a more effective approach that focused on addressing the underlying beliefs, rather than simply modifying the behavior, to inspire a complete transformation. His powerful story and innovative methodology have been featured on 700 Club Canada, 100 Huntley Street, and Consider Before Consuming.
Goodreads Giveaway Win: I went into this book with 3 assumptions:
1. That this would be shame-based fundamentalist drivel. 2. That the book is directed to men because “women would never!” (insert pearl-clutching here) 3. The narrow focus on porn addiction would have little applicability to other vices or addictions.
What I found was none of the above. The author is a sincere, matter-of-fact writer who assumes the reader’s basic belief in Christianity and basic goodness. Having lived most of my life under the thumb of a high-demand religion I have spent some time exploring and attempting to understand other religious paths in the past ten years or so. On occasion I find someone who truly seems to embody Christian tenets without wielding them as a club of judgmental damnation over the heads of others. The author seems to be one of these.
What began as a somewhat skeptical academic read for me ended up being an enjoyable, peaceful time spent. The author focuses his practice on men because he is speaking from his experience. He doesn’t exclude women because of some weird purity culture nonsense, he just chooses to limit his scope to men because of his personal journey. Write what you know and all that.
I found there is really very little in the book that focuses exclusively on pornography addiction, almost everything can be broadly applied to other areas in which people may struggle.
One small criticism I might have is that there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of a “how to,”step by step guide that you usually get with self-help. There is apparently a workbook that was supposed to be included but wasn’t in the edition that I read. Admittedly, I was not reading with this in mind, so I may have missed it.
The overall positive message of the book was a refreshing surprise and I found the author’s tone and writing style to be warm, friendly and compassionate.
So this was an interesting book. I listened to a podcast a while ago that had Mr. Sam as a guest and he talked about his history with a pornography addiction and how he now sets up this system, he calls it DeepClean, to help men overcome this addiction. Then he said his entire system is written in a book that is a completely free download. My interest was piqued so I downloaded the book and this is where I am. I think the strategy laid down in the book can be applied to just about any bad habit or major change you want in your life. Normally we remain comfortable or we become defined by a habitual sin in our lives because it feels good, it is unchallenging. No progress and no growth is made without experiencing discomfort and sometimes pain. The process here could be applied to many areas of life beyond porn. The other fascinating aspect of this book is there is an online workbook. After each of the 9 chapters there is a corresponding "homework" to complete in the workbook and I think this is also where the magic happens. Again, it's all completely free. When society talks about being a "high value man" I think this guy gets it. He is not threatened by people being able to walk through this journey alone but I also think it's a journey you shouldn't walk through alone but then also giving away a workbook so that you can think through and respond to questions that help you identify solutions and apply what you've read.
I love this book cause it tackles a topic that is so important and not yet talked enough of. I love how the author encourages, he has been there has gone through it and wants anybody else to overcome as well. And he helps from a equal position not from a place of I know it all which I really appreciate. What I like as well in the book is the science part of it. It's not just a prayer and boom the miracle has happened, Sathiya makes us understand how we are wired and moreover how we can change our behavior towards positive change.
This is a great book for all, and especially those spiritual enough for the Bible quotes. Who knew the book of Proverbs had such deep practical advice? (We all did, but here we finally put it in action.)
However, for those who have been struggling for a long time or are deeper in, this might not be enough. Rather, consider it a useful and practical positive supplement. Definitely worth your time if you struggle with these issues.
The main thing I took away from reading this book is there is hope. Addiction and watching porn is not a behavioural issue, but it’s an emotion one in how we deal with pain. I’ve noticed my own pain more and in turn have spoken, kindness, love and hope instead of despair and hopelessness. I’m looking forward to re-wiring my brain and making changes to strengthen my own identity.
The book opened my eyes on how to take practical and biblical steps to break the chains of sexual sin. It was referred to me my someone I deeply look up to and admire and found the principles very helpful as I’ve been able navigate my way through my own sins. I would suggest it to any Christ followers who deal with this epidemic.
Finding the root of a problem is the first step to solving that problem. The Last Relapse helps the reader find the root of their addictive behaviour and practical steps to get free from it. I recommend this book to people with all addictions.
