The Lord's Prayer was taught by the mouth of Christ to all of mankind through the request of one disciple. Christ shared His own prayer which consists of seven petitions. These petitions reflect the secrets which lead to intimacy with God, and are truly treasures in our spiritual life. This book will examine how our Lord prayed these words, and will also explore the hidden meanings in this famous prayer.
Fr. Mina Dimitri leads a wide ranging discussion and exhortation in The Lord’s Prayer. To the western reader, Dimitri offers a perspective frequently drawn from his Coptic Christian background. His counterpoints include western mainstays such as TV, popular culture, and self-indulgence. Fr. Dimitri is a priest at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church in New Jersey, USA.
The book is organized by the order of the supplications, or requests, made in The Lord’s Prayer. Our Father , followed by Who Art in Heaven, then Hallowed Be Thy Name, and so on. Dimitri includes introductory chapters, and chapters on the Lord’s Name, Doxology, and some closing thoughts.
The thoughts are by turns personal, storytelling, instructive, and exhortation. Dimitri expresses a vigorous piety throughout. Also, an ability to address a 21st century sensibility. Some examples: “The Christian faith is a weapon in the face of an evil world…” and “Abba does not mean daddy.”, and “Christianity has become another name for social justice, social services, or boundless acceptance…” And, a phrase in which Dimitri neatly expresses the Christian statement “The Kingdom is here”: realized eschatology.
Dimitri includes many quotes, often long quotes, from Christian Church thinkers and apologists such as St. Gregory of Nyssa, Fr. Matthew the Poor, and Pope Shenouda III. Parallels to Jewish faith practices are noted. Each chapter closes with a section called Sayings of the Fathers. These writers from the early Christian Church include Origen, Tertullian, Cyril of Alexandria, Jerome and Augustine. The last expression in each chapter is a prayer.
The tone of the book adjusts from pious energetic, to easy academic, to frank and thoughtful. Dimitri leaves no doubt about the source of human goodness and achievement. The Kingdom has been here for a long time. It comes from within and above.
For a complete disection and thorough interpretation on the famous "Lord's Prayer," Dimitry keeps the explanations spiritual through the eyes of an Anglican perspective. While all may not completely agree with this style of prayer, if there were more parishners seeking to understand prayer similar to this approach, the religious landscape would undoubtedly look much different. When some form of prayer is not the main focus of ones faith journey, all other activities all-to-often become focused around non-essentials. Dimitry has given the reader a vast array of thoughtful statements that should lead them into a better understanding of the overall purpose of the Lord's Prayer.
This is a well written, well researched guide to understanding The Lord's Prayer. It explains the history and meaning of each part of the prayer. The first chapter on what prayer is the meaning of it to our soul really touched me. At times the words are almost poetic and inspired.
I was looking for a book to help look into a deeper meaning of prayer and this book did not disappoint. The book goes into very detail about prayer and the historical meaning and the many scriptures used to back the meaning was great!
I love how the author expressed how seeking and spending time with God will help sooth your soul and life. I pray in heart and everywhere I go to get me through the day. There should be more books like this.
