3.5 “I love you, my Highland shifter.” Stars

*Spoilers*

 photo highlandershifter_zpsgqxsiww7.gif

“’Tis easier to think with a clear head.” “Yeah, well, mine ain’t clear, kilt boy, mine is full of whys, what ifs, and how comes. Not to mention a heavy dose of ‘that sonofabitch’.”

Soooo, Highland Shifter was a pretty good read, but no where near as good as the others in this series. The reason I didn't like this book as much as I have previous ones is because of Helen. OMG was Helen a whiner. She couldn't handle anything. I must have yelled at my kindle at least 5 time "OH for GOD Sake's woman put on your big girl panties and deal with it!"

 photo highlandshifter3_zpspud87gqt.jpg

“Back off, he-man. Clocking my boss probably won’t give us any answers either.” “But I like clocking my enemies. To tell you the truth, I miss it.”

Simon was great, I loved him. Sexy, brave and sweet. I love all the MacCoinnich family! We get to see what has been going on in everyone's lives years after where the last book left off. Simon is now 30. It was fun seeing all the new children. Helen got on my last nerve bad and it really took away from my enjoyment of the story. Helen really was my only problem with this book, the plot was great, and even Helen got better as the book went on. Just not fast enough for me. Still a good solid read. I am on to Amber's Story. Yay I'm excited about Amber's book!

“You couldn’t do that with claws,” she told him, nipping his ears. “You’re right. I’d rip your clothing off instead. Use that cat tongue to taste every inch of your delicious skin.” Heat shot to Helen’s core. “That shouldn’t turn me on.” Simon tasted the corner of her mouth and down her neck. “But it did.”

Reread Review November 23, 2019

Still love! Lots of action! Happy reading!
Original Review December 25, 2013

Another good story in the MacCoinnich series. This is Simon's story and he is all grown up. Helen is his love interest. They are both good likeable characters but I'm not sure why they liked each other so much. That's why it's a four star not five for me. I did enjoy the book and if you liked the first three then you should read this one too. I'm looking forward to Amber's book next and I hope Cian is coming soon. He was a little strange in this one. Happy reading! Merry Christmas!

You can find this entire review at Forever Book Lover.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It wasn't until I started reading this book, that I found out it was part of an ongoing series. I was somewhat unsure if I was going to be able to jump in and read it and not become lost. I actually got in touch with Catherine and asked her opinion, she reassured me that it was a stand alone but many of the characters mentioned in the book had been mentioned in prior books. I decided to give it a shot, I mean how could I go wrong with a time travel book and a book about my all time favorite heros- Highlanders!! And I am glad I did, I absolutely loved it. It was all that and more.

I will tell you that just getting the glimpse into Simon's family made me what to go out and find the three books that led up to Highland Shifter. The author did a awesome job building a background that I didn't feel lost at all.

Since I never read the books where Simon was a young boy, I fell in love with him just the same. Simon was a strong, brawny character. And Helen was in her own right a strong leading heroine. I am afraid I will give the story and plot away if I continue any more, and I know I dislike that in a review. I will tell you Simon has a strong family foundation, their love and support is found on almost every page. Some parts were so touching, my heart wrenched when they needed to make some tough decisions that would separate love ones. I cried like a baby!

This is a must read for lovers of time travel, mystery, romance lovers. Not that I needed to but I think reading the first three books would be worthwhile. Gives you a better understanding of the family and their magical powers.

Just a side note: I am now reading Binding Vows, the first in the MacCoinnich Time Travel Trilogy, and I'm loving it!! How did I miss this series, well it's better late than never.. :)

Aw, another yummy treat from one of the best in Scottish time-travel! In this fourth installment of an on-going series, Ms. Bybee has once again succeeded in creating a delightful yet believable story while conjuring up all kinds of wonderfully fantastic possibilities in the realm of time travel. It's light and totally escapist enjoyment for those who crave uber-hot, sexy highlanders, realistic, intelligent heroines, wild and exciting predicaments, while adding in just the right touch of fantasy. An added bonus is that this book can be read alone and enjoyed almost as much as when read as part of the series. That, however, is not recommended, as one would miss out on all the delicious stories that give the secondary characters in this book depth and relevance.

In Simon's story, the reader gets to see the boy we have all watched grow through previous books become the strong honorable hero we knew he would become. With his gifts and understanding, he is able to discern immediately the plight of the pretty young lady wearing the odd clothing and looking completely disoriented. As he sets about helping her make sense of how she entered a garden in the 21st century only to be pulled into the medieval Scotland, Simon realizes the very serious threat that is plaguing his family in this time period may be directly related to Helen's predicament in her time period. As the intrigue progresses, so does the chemistry between Simon and Helen. There are many twists and turns in story that keep one guessing and the pages turning until it's nearly impossible to put it down. And, while the form may seem a little simplistic at times (hey, it's not trying to be Shakespeare) it is pure unadulterated escapist fun!

When it comes to this author I just can't get enough.

I am a huge fan and I have read all the books with Tara/Duncan, Myra/Todd and Lizzy/Fin. In those books Grainna was the evil that had to be destroyed and with this book I was wondering how the author could top what had been written in the previous books and it was topped.

In California Helen is on to the missing case of Simon MacAlister where she finds a book (with a picture of her in it) and a necklace which gives her a feeling of warmth. Helen flies out to Scotland and time travels back to 1596 where she lands in Simon's lap BUT Simon is now a grown man of 30 and so the roller coaster ride begins.

Once again a beautiful and magical world has been created living you wanting more and more. Also for the fact that there are so many children running around there is no end to the stories that can and should be written. There is no cliffhanger to the book per se BUT it makes you want to read Amber's story next. which Ms. Bybee is very naughty of you because now I have to wait.

Maybe you could give me a sneak preview??? Pretty please with cherries on top!!!!!

Highlander Shifter by Catherine Bybee is a terrific paranormal time travel romance and it have to be honest it drew me right in from the beginning. I met this amazing author at the RT convention in Chicago and the moment I saw the cover of this book I knew I had to read it. I love shifters and time travel and mixed into one is definitely a bonus. When I started this book I didn’t knew it was part of a series, but that doesn’t matter because this story can read as stand alone.

Helen is a strong and determined woman from the 21st century; who has an amazing gift, she can find any object or person she is looking for. It amaze me how strong Helen really is, especially when she’s thrown back in time and meet the very person she’s been looking for. Only he is not a teenage boy anymore, but a strong handsome highland warrior. Although everything is strange to her, she adapts quickly and helps these Druid men and women like they are her own family.

I haven’t read the previous books in this series, so I cannot compare young Simon with this grown man; but Holy Moly what a fine specimen he is. Not only is he drop dead gorgeous but has an amazing power too. When he meets Helen, you can feel the attraction between them even thought they just met. I just loved the scene where Helen discovers Simon’s shifting ability and the way she handle it.

The secondary characters Duncan & Tara, Todd & Myra, Fin & Liz and many other were great. I really want to get the three previous novels in the series too, so I can see how they find each other.

I only have one little criticism and that would be the major cliffhanger at the end. How could Ms. Bybee do that to us readers and leave us with this empty feeling. I’m dying to get my hands on the next book and see how that is going to turn out.

I highly recommend this novel to fans of paranormal / time travel romance; you won’t be disappointed when you pick up this book.

"I just started Highland Shifter by Catherine Bybee. It is the 4th book in the series, but could stand alone.
Worth the wait! I love how the writter makes you feel like you are right there in the scene with the characters on each page I read.. I am trying to read this slowly and enjoy the fantasy world I am in for as long as I can. I love it!"

I loved this story of Simon who has grown up and is just as loving and caring as the rest of his wonderful family that are included in his story. It makes the reader feel like they are living all the experiences with the characters. I love this series and like how the family and events from past books are brought to the present along with the new story of Simon. I couldn't put it down. I wish it was a longer book!!! I could read about this family and their adventures for along time and never get bored. Great writting!! Great read!!!
I am now "patiently waiting for Amber's story", that you know has to come next. Thank you for writing such entertaining books. 5 Stars

This will be an auto buy for me. I love Catherine's books! If you haven't read this series, you need to start reading them now!! :D

Review:
It took a little longer for me to get into this book. It had been a long time since I had read the first three books. That made it harder for me to remember who the other characters were and how they related to each other in this book.

This one finished with a cliffhanger. It did not interfere with the storyline of this book, or leave you hanging. It does make you want to buy the next book immediately though. It looks like the next book could be her best one yet!

Highland Shifter is the first book that I have read by Catherine Bybee, and I enjoyed it. This book kept me entertained and held my attention. I enjoy reading time travel historical romances, so I decided to give this one a try! Simon, the hero in the book is a Druid and can change forms at will. It does help that is a gentleman, sexy, a highlander and from Scotland (which I wish to visit one day). The heroine is stubborn, compassionate and falls in love with Simon (the hunky Druid). Helen is from the 21st century and she travels back to 15th century Scotland, where she meets Simon. Helen and Simon work together to find out who is trying to destroy his family and where Helen fits into it all.

There were a few things in the book that were a little unbelievable to me though. Like the hero changing into a wolf (which we have heard of the legends of werewolves), which I accepted (but don't believe). He also can change into a falcon (I excepted that even I don't believe it), but when he said he could change into a shark I rolled my eyes. Ms Bybee should have left the shark bit out of the story. I don't believe in time travel either, but the thought is exciting! Even after the shark deal I kept reading (yes I did).

This story was full of love, family, mystery and a little magic. It also has a few twist and turns that kept me interested. I usually prefer the heroine to be feisty and the hero to be a play little hard to get. I also like a little more conflict, but all in all this was a fun read that held my attention right up to the very end.

I realized after reading this book that there a 3 more before this one, about the MacConnich family.

GOOD BUT NOT AWESOME!!

After reading bk 1-3 in the MacCoinnick Time Travel series Highland Shifter was a bit of a disappointment and let down. Books. 1-3 are Awesome, so I guess we had to have a miss step in the series. I didn't like Helen the heroine of the story, she just made so many dumb mistakes. I love Simone but felt maybe his story should have waited a bit longer as he was still around 12yrs old in the last book. Simon an Helen just didn't have the same romantic connection as previous couples. They didn't convince me of the there love or their passion for one another. This is a time travel story and the ages do vary with this kind of storyline from past to present, but for some reason it doesn't feel right. All of a sudden Simon jumps from 12yrs old to 30yrs old. I think I needed time for him to grown up in a few more books like we have seen with Cian and Amber.

It was good to get to read about previous characters and see how there lives had progressed and to meet all of there children. I really like the character of Mrs. Dawson. There are new villains Malcolm and Philip brothers in this story. The story as a whole was good but not Awesome!!

My Rating: ❤❤❤❤
VERY GOOD: The characteristics of a 4 star book include: a great story; I loved the characters; and there was an interesting plot and unique story elements; there may have been a few odd things kept the story from being amazing. I would read it again and I would recommend it to a friend.
My Thoughts:
I absolutely enjoyed this story. It incorporated some of my most favorite elements -- a hunky Highlander, a shapeshifter, magic, and romance. Ms. Bybee spins an excellently woven tale that reads like a fast paced fairytale (of a fashion). I loved the characters and the family dynamic and love expressed between them. I cannot wait for Amber's story.

Another stellar read from Ms. Bybee.

I really enjoyed this book, but not until more midway into the book. It had been a while since reading the other books and I was trying to remember everyone. I couldn't really remember anything about cian & amber! I know in my previous reviews, I was really wanting to read their stories! Perhaps, I should have read them again! I don't really believe this could be a stand alone book. It does have a new story line, but with all the past characters, you really need to have read those books too. Can't wait to read the next book now!!!

The time traveling Highlanders are back! More accurately I couldn't resist the time-travel crack that this series represents and went back before the second trilogy was finished.

There’s probably a cliffhanger in my immediate future. I’ll suffer on womanfully when the time comes. But not just yet!

The MacCoinnichs, besides having a nearly unspellable name, are a family of time-traveling Druids in the 16th century. We were introduced to them in the Vows trilogy; Binding Vows, Silent Vows, and Redeeming Vows and at the end, they had defeated the evil Druid Grainna who had traveled from the 21st century to the 16th. Along the way of the story the MacCoinnichs themselves had traveled back and forth in time more than once, and had not just brought a whole bunch of people back in time, but by doing so had created more than few missing persons cases for the 21st century cops.

Also along that way they had managed to enlighten a few people about who their ancestors really were and that well, “the truth is out there”. More like “back there” in time.

And just because Grainna was defeated, doesn't mean that evil is permanently vanquished. There’s always someone else willing to be the next evil. Evil is just like that.

But Highland Shifter begins as one of those missing persons cases. When Lizzy MacAllister and her son Simon choose to stay in the 16th century at the end of Redeeming Vows, they were "missing" as far as the 21st century was concerned. There’s not much attention paid to Lizzy’s case, but Simon was 14, and missing children are taken more seriously. More seriously than missing adults, anyway. Simon's picture made it onto a few milk cartons, at least.

Only a couple of years in the 21st century after Simon’s disappearance, Helen Adams discovers a Celtic amulet in a second hand store and purchases it on a whim. It seems old but not terribly valuable. However, Helen has a “gift” that regularly leads her into finding rare and/or valuable treasures, and that gift is what led her into purchasing the amulet.

The amulet leads her to a book that shows her drawings of herself in 16th century Highland dress with the amulet around her neck, side-by-side with a kilted warrior. It also leads her to research about the disappearance of one teenaged boy named Simon MacAllister. Even though she’s certain that her “strong intuition” is sending her on a wild goose chase, she follows her hunch from California to the Scottish Highlands. A hike in the countryside sends her straight to the missing boy--except that he’s no longer a boy and Helen doesn't find him in 21st century Scotland; time passed differently for him than it has in the future.

But it has become necessary for the MacCoinnichs to start time traveling again because evil has again arisen. It will require Druids from both the 16th and the 21st century working together to overcome it. Because just as with Grainna, the evildoer is not from the past, it is a person from the 21st century.

Escape Rating B: This series is like crack. I say that in a good way. I get one and start and can’t stop. I’m in the middle of Highland Protector right now because I couldn't stand not to start it instantly. I poured through the first three without stopping for a break. The whole series is a big YUM if you like time-travel romance. And with KILTS! Double-yum.

I love it that the MacCoinnich family is completely functional. There are so many series where everyone is has a fucked up home life and there is angst on both sides and both the hero and heroine are completely damaged people. Simon's family is totally solid and they love and support each other whatever happens. It’s great to catch up with the couples from the first series, but in general, this is a family you would want to be related to or have a meal with.

One of the most interesting characters in Highland Shifter is the side-character Mrs. Dawson. She’s Helen’s surrogate mother. I wish there was a novella about her life with the late Mr. Dawson, because Mrs. Dawson is very special. It’s clear she’s a Druid, but she’s got one hell of a power that’s concealed. Or something. She opens her home to everyone, but she’s also this very clear pool of patience and kindness and yet, when called upon, actual magic oomph. There’s way more to her than meets the eye.

Helen wasn't quite as much fun as some of the previous heroines in this series. There was something horrible in her past that kept being alluded to but wasn't ever spelled out that kept her from being willing to give Simon half a chance, until she suddenly changed her mind (or gave in to his overwhelming hotness) all at once. On the other hand, in spite of her ability to find things, she never seems to have found out that her boss was a creep, or been willing to believe it even when presented with pretty incontrovertible evidence.

She was also a bit slow on the uptake about the extent of Simon’s powers, and he was equally slow about informing her. Not quite the way to develop a trusting relationship. However, the way his mother made sure Helen got informed was just plain rude. Effective, but rude.

Summary: Simon McAllister-MacCoinnich was in his early teens at the end of the last book, Redeeming Vows. He was just beginning to understand his Druid powers and was thriving in his new life in sixteenth-century Scotland. It is now 1596, and Simon is no longer a child. He is thirty years old, and he has become a formidable Highland warrior like the other men in his family. Now an expert at his Druid skills of shape-shifting and communicating with animals, Simon takes responsibility for scouting and spying on their enemies.

In present day California, Simon and his mother Lizzie have been missing persons for only two years. Helen Adams has been investigating Simon’s disappearance; not officially, but rather as a private citizen. Helen has an unusual talent for being able to find anything she is looking for – almost like a human GPS. Her current quest for Simon became important to her shortly after purchasing an unusual stone necklace in a second-hand store. Since that time, she has been led to other items that are connected to the missing boy and his family.

After discovering additional clues in an old book, Helen travels to Scotland in pursuit of answers. Her internal GPS talent leads her to a secluded meadow, where she is suddenly hurdled through a time vortex, landing in a forest in 1596 Scotland. She has indeed located Simon, but certainly not at the age or in a location she was expecting. And before any explanations can be made, both Helen and Simon are thrust back through time to present day California.

Simon understands that for the Ancients to bring them together in such a way, there must be a greater purpose to the time travel and Helen’s presence in his life. While his family is facing attacks from an unknown enemy in 1596, Helen has become the target of some very suspicious behavior in her time. In order to solve both mysteries, and protect the entire MacCoinnich family, Simon and Helen must face multiple trips through time together. Through their adventures and misfortunes, they begin to fall in love. But even if they are able to survive the dangers they must face, how can they have a relationship with so many centuries of time between their homes?

Review: I LOVED this book, it has definitely become my favorite in the series. Before reading it, I was really curious to see how Simon’s character from the earlier novels would translate into an adult character in this story. I wasn’t sure if I would recognize him as the same person, and I was especially curious to see how his shape-shifting powers would be presented within the context of a romance (would the heroine still think he’s sexy after she has seen him as a bird or an dog?) On both counts, I think the author did an incredible job. Simon is no longer a timid boy, he is as masculine and courageous as the generation before him. But at the same time, I could still see young Simon through the protective nature of his parents, Lizzie and Finlay. And as far as the shape-shifting, it is so second-nature to Simon now, that it never felt anything but normal – even within the romantic storyline.

I also enjoyed Helen’s character, and I loved her talent. Every time a new character has been introduced in this series, I’ve asked myself which of their talents I would want if I could have my choice. It used to be a toss-up between Lora’s premonitions and Ian’s control of storms and weather. But after reading this book, I think I’d choose Helen’s sixth sense for finding whatever she is looking for. It sounds incredibly useful to me, and it is also really unique.

Because Grainna was finally destroyed in Redeeming Vows, I knew that this book would be introducing a new villain or villains. I was really pleased to see that Bybee took an entirely different approach to the antagonist storyline in Highland Shifter. This time, we readers don’t get the inside scoop of the evil doings until the characters are figuring things out themselves. The way that the threats were eventually resolved was also something we haven’t seen before. These changes made the book feel fresh and new, while still being grounded with the family we know and love.

Once again, I found myself appreciating that this author does not abandon the characters from earlier books when she focuses on someone new. Even though this is definitely Simon’s story, I was happy to see Duncan & Tara, Todd & Myra, and Fin & Liz all involved in the action. It wouldn’t have felt right without them.

I don’t have any criticisms of this book at all. The only thing I wish I could have seen before the story ended was an actual exchange of vows between Simon and Helen. But to be honest, that didn’t even occur to me until I sat down to write this review. This book ends with a completely unexpected and killer cliffhanger, so at the time, I was too busy picking my jaw up off the floor to realize that the Simon and Helen weren’t married yet.

I have been a big fan of this series all along, so I was really excited to find out that the original trilogy was going to grow into a series of at least six books. Highly recommended to fans of Historical Fantasy/Romance, Time-Travel Romances, and anyone who enjoys novels based on Scottish or Druid folklore.

To See Review at Booked Up

Helen Adams found out that an antique book from Mrs. Dawson’s library had something to do with a teenage boy, Simon McAllister. However, when she opened it, she saw pictures of herself wearing a floor length dress with long, flowing sleeves and a watch; but the book was over two hundred years old!

In Scotland, trying to find out what was going on, she almost looses the picture of the boy and she hurts herself trying to recover it… and she says the words that make her travel back time to 1596:

“See, here. I’m bleeding to find you, Simon McAllister. So stop trying to fly away.” The words no sooner left her lips before the sound of the ocean simply turned off. The air around her crackled and rushed out of her lungs.

There, she finds Simon, a Druid and Shape Sifter, a man who can read animals thoughts, control them, and convert into whatever animal he wants. He is one and the same Simon McAllister she was looking for. And when they are attacked, Helen wishes to be home and she and Simon travel back to California:

“I want to go home. Please, just let me go home.” The world around her tilted and once again fell away.

Back to Mrs. Dawson, where she found the book in first place, she and Simon find, using magic, that there are five more books that could help them to find why she was traveling to past and why when she came back Simon was with her; and how he could return.

The whole world turns crazier than before as Helen sees her boss Philip, leaving from her apartment. While they are trying to understand what Philip has to do with everything, they discover that Helen’s necklace is the key to it all. And it was dated:

“Early seventeenth century. Maybe before.”

Well, you will find the origin of it if you read the book, I won't add any more.
I loved the irony of Helen’s thoughts when she realized that she has to travel in time one more time because they needed someone of Simon’s family to help them uncover the truth about the necklace and Helen’s boss.

Helen was about to experience medieval Scotland for a second time. Oh, joy. The first was so much fun. Why not do it again?

Helen doesn’t think she will stay long; still, Simon’s brother is sure she will:

I don’t think I’ll be staying here for weeks.”
Kyle titled his head to the side and furrowed his brow. “Yes, you will.”
The convicted tone of the child would have been comical if it wasn’t for the fact that all the people surrounding her had one skill or another. Telekinesis, premonitions, reading people’s minds…heck, Simon’s father could cause an earthquake and his grandfather could charge lightning from the sky. So to hear a ten-year-old tell her she wasn’t going anywhere made her squirm. Did he know something she didn’t?

However, that is not all. There is a Druid from the future, who wants the stone that would allow him to travel thru time and thinks that MacCoinnich’s women has what he wants. And he will do whatever he has to get it and he will enjoy every second.

Although you can read this book without any of the previous ones, I recommend you read the others in the series first Binding Vows, Silent Vows, and Redeeming Vows because all the books are connected with this one.

So, what can I say about this book? I will use just a word: wow! All paranormal lovers will love this book. It's wonderful; merging druids, magic, time travel, action, and romance. It will hold you captive until the end… and after. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Catherine Bybee has prepared for Amber, because I bet it will be something full of imagination… the end of this book assures me of that.

So 5 stars for this book and hundreds for Ms. Catherine Bybee, because I love all her books.

OMG that was friggen AWESOME!!!!

LOVED IT!!!

After reading the first 3 of this series and found out that there was this one I automatically went straight ahead and bought this.

This story was action packed, just when you thought it would calm BANG!!!!! something else happens to spin you on your head, and your eyes bugg out

Great storyline, Awesome characters, action packed, hot sex scenes and a hearty dose of time travel.

Catherine Bybee has a magical way of telling her time travel highlander stories, her unique voice sucks you in from beginning to end and leaves you wanting more, after the fourth book in this series it is still going strong, you never know where she is going to take the story next which is really refreshing and exciting I really look forward to each and every instalment. (Especially since in this one there is a cliffhanger ARRHH!!!! but im confident that it will be worth the wait)

Simon is now 30 years old (how cool is that) his powers are stronger, he's grown into a sexy Highlander and loves it (yeah so do I!!!), he falls for Helen hard and hes so sweet and arrogant you just want to throttle him while you cuddle him. Being from the future who is now living in the past you can see that he has adjusted well to the age/time, and become the man he was always meant to be. I love that he can shift into animals seems a worthy gift that Simon has mastered.

Helen is a photographer from the future, she is feisty, and hilarious especially when she is fighting with Simon and the magic. Helen is an orphan and has not had family to ground her and keep her safe and loved. Her reluctance with Simon is justified and I loved that this was taken into account when the relationship stuff started and not glossed over.

You can see this couple fall for each other immediately, it just works they are definitely meant to be together and the different times that they each live in is a huge obstacle. In fact all the couples in this series have the whole meant to be with each other soul/destined mate thing. LOVE IT!!!!

Amber (my favourite) her powers have grown so strong that its starting to kill her but with Helen's idea this may change.

There is more time travel in this one and you get to meet the new children. Briac (Tara and Duncan's boy) is a teenager OMG he needs his own story and the rest of the couple from the first 3 books have children.

I still laugh at the differences in the ages from electricity and running water its all such a wonder and you can see it from their points of view and look at your own comforts and surroundings differently.

The twists and turns keep you turning those pages like they are on fire, although there is a cliffhanger leading up to Ambers story, the original story is rounded off nicely and completely if you didn't read the last half of the epilogue you could be content with the ending and look forward to the next instalment with the cliffhanger however your left on the edge of your seat.

Thank you Gravetells for bringing this series into my world, your just Awesome!

So looking forward to the next one, may have to do a re-read before then though. If you love Highlander time travel or just a really good story, give this series a go its well worth it.

A war split by centuries. A family torn apart by circumstance. A love with no bounds.

And that's only the beginning.

HIGHLAND SHIFTER is a breathtaking trip through the fabric of time, each stitch more intriguing than the last. Through a simple stone pendant with incredible power to an ancient book wielding mysterious clues, Helen Adams is whisked to sixteenth century Scotland. Dropped into a strange world with her life on the line, she finds herself face to face with a young man missing from modern-day California—one who is now very much grown , handsome, and fierce. He's also her only chance for survival, but will he tear her world apart?

The story that follows is beautifully woven, every thread an intricate part of the larger tapestry. Mystery abounds in the form of ancient magic, Druid secrets, and a twist in time which throws Helen and Simon into a conflict with a threat that can—and does—change everything. No single place is safe. As the story progresses, the clues to Helen's past funnel into an ever-sharpening vortex—a collision of past and present that will leave readers reaching fervently for one page after the next. And in the end, when the path is clear, the choice with which Simon and Helen are left—and the decision that follows—is one readers will remember long after the last page has closed. Intense and adventuresome, with characters so true they're more a part of your life than they are the book in your hand, HIGHLAND SHIFTER is a story that gets to the very core of human emotion and grows there, deep in the heart.

And has there ever been a more exquisitely written romance? One stolen moment at a time, the reader feels the connection grow between Simon and Helen. It's as natural as breathing. Ms. Bybee draws from the reader an ache for these characters, and there builds a yearning for a resolution that's as improbable as the truth itself. In the face of a world Helen never knew existed, her strength doesn't hide her vulnerability. Simon's sacrifice is bone-deep, his loyalty for his family a large part of who he is. They don't come together as opposites, but with a purpose. And it's through those circumstances their bond surges—tender, strong, and beautifully intimate.

If you've not yet read BINDING VOWS, which precedes HIGHLAND SHIFTER, or the other titles in the MacCoinnich Time Travel Romance series, don't let that discourage you from grabbing this one right away. Ms. Bybee does such a fantastic job of world building in HIGHLAND SHIFTER, it would actually serve as a standalone title if not for the captivating final scene. And while those last words take nothing from the conclusion, they do serve their purpose, as I am positively dying to read the next book. And while I wait, I'll bide my time with the rest of the series. After experiencing HIGHLAND SHIFTER, I won't dare miss a single one.

I received a complimentary advance copy of HIGHLAND SHIFTER in exchange for an honest review.

to read this review and more, check out my blog; Drugs Called Books

We first met Simon in the first three books of the series, when he was only a teenager. Well, he's not a kid anymore--ask Helen, she'll tell you. I've been really looking forward to Simon's story (And Cian, and Amber's and now for the story of all the MacCoinnich kids, which I sincerely hope will happen!) and it didn't disappoint.

I warn you - this is not going to be a well written, deep and through review. I'm not sure if I can even call it a review. Mostly because I find I don't know exactly what to say about this book. It's a good read and I enjoyed it and recommend it and the entire series as a whole, but I don't have a lot to say about it still.

Simon has become a highlander to the bone; kilt, muscles and protectiveness honed to perfection. It was really weird trying to compare the kid he was and the man he is now, but it was fun.

Helen fits Simon. As always, the females in this series are headstrong, smart and brave, and Helen is no exception.

Together, they made a really cute couple, and I loved the ending for them both. I'm so happy for them <3 Their romance was well build and I found it easy to believe it.

For the first time, we get a book-centered villain. The first three books revolved around a single villain, but not this one. It makes me wonder whether each of the following books--and there are at least two others--will have a specif villain, or will we discover that everything connects?

I have to applaud Bybee for her fantastic, though a bit maddening, ending. I was completely shocked by it and it made me want to read the next book so badly it hurts.
Part of me wants to curse out loud for the pain she's putting me through. The other part thinks the ending was bloody brilliant. I am so going to enjoy the next book!

I have to wonder, seeing Simon and Helen and now Amber's situation whether this three-books of the series (4-6) will be the opposite from the first three. Instead of going to the past, we're going to go to the future? that'll be interesting.

So, this book is a four stars. Very fast and easy read, you'll find yourself turning the pages until suddenly there won't be anymore to read, and then you'll want to throw the book on a wall until you realize how bloody brilliant the ending is.

Helen can find what she sets her heart to finding, in this case it's the teenage boy Simon McAllister, traveling all the way to Scotland is nothing compared to traveling back in time and finding Simon, in a kilt, sporting a giant sword, and yes in his thirties.

Traveling back to her time Simon tags along determined to find out why their paths crossed, being a druid he knows nothing happens by chance, and the attraction he feels for her doesn't quite allow him to leave her, especially when her shady boss breaks into her apartment. There is something going on and he won't let Helen get hurt, even if it means sticking around in the time of noise, cars and electricity just a little while longer.

I so enjoyed this! As the forth book in the series, this one is a stand alone, but still gives readers a glimpse into the lives of the couples that came before. Now I haven't read the previous three books, but now I want to! Bybee writes so well, Highland Shifter is full of action, romance and time-travel! Not just one way ticket to the past but a real entertaining back and forth. Bybee creates worlds in an effortless way and there's so much going on you don't get bored reading it, there will be no skipping pages here!

The romance was starting with a flirty slow burn and developed into deeper emotions, sexual tension and lust before we get to the fire works! Simon I loved, a man of two worlds born in the present and living in sixteenth century, he had best of both worlds, the modern view but with the dominant sixteenth century vibe. Simply delicious. I liked Helen too, she had a lot of package to bring to a relationship, being an orphan and stepping into Simon's 20+ family. With her rejection issues she put the brakes on with Simon more than once, but that was so enjoyable to read!

I will definitely be looking into the earlier books in the series, I'm quite hooked now... especially after reading the last chapter, now I have to read Amber's story! What a cliffhanger!

I was trying to think of something to point out that I didn't like and well-- came up empty... this is a 5 Star read!

Magic, Druids and Men in Kilts, What’s Not to Love?

Helen has a sixth sense of being able to find people or items. Her gift leads her to Simon McAllister, a teen that went missing a few years ago. Only this boy is a sword-yielding man now, living in 16th century Scotland with a family of Druids, who think nothing of time travel, magic and shape shifting.

Simon has lived in both worlds 16th century and the 21st century. Helen has enemies in her time and there is a war threatening Simon’s family in Scotland, but Simon will do what he must to protect Helen and his family. The moment Helen arrives in his world, he knows the Ancients brought them together for a reason and his destiny will now be linked with hers. The attraction between them is obvious, but will Helen be able to accept his guarded secret of being a shifter?

HIGHLAND SHIFTER from the first page takes the reader on a journey to discover the mystery behind the ancient book and the pendant that possesses power beyond belief. The Druid magic and the secondary characters all add to the charm of this time travel where the past and the present intertwine. Helen handles the time travel well, but there is still the vulnerability that is expected when one’s life has been drastically changed. Simon is fierce, loyal and a man of honor in every sense of the word. Helen and Simon’s attraction to each other is heartfelt as they work together to solve the mystery that links both their worlds together.

This is the fourth book in the MacCoinnich series, but it can be read as a standalone. I have not read the other books, but look forward to catching up on the series. I must know how Simon’s loving family began their journey. At the end of Highland Shifter, Ms. Bybee teases the readers with a sneak peek of a future book in the MacCoinnich Time Travel Series.

Other books in the series:
Binding Vows (Book 1)
Silent Vows (Book 2)
Redeeming Vows (Book 3)

HOLY CRAP 5 HUGE HIGHLAND FREAKING ROMANTIC MAGICAL TIME TRAVELING STARS!!

This book honestly left me breathless!
I love this series and I have to say that the story just keeps getting better and better. Simon was one of my favorite characters in the previous books and I'm so happy that he got his own story.
The phenomenal writing just pulls you in and doesn't let you go. I love how Bybee describes the magic and the power that is so much a part of this story.
And the family bond itself is something I love to read about. You live this family! You LOVE this family!
I have read a lot of time travel books and a lot of highlander romances, Catherine Bybee is one of the best!
FYI: The epilogue in this one... It will seriously knock you on your ass.
Can't wait to start Amber's story!
Again, Ms. Bybee! You have done it again!

READ THESE BOOKS!!

Was given this as a gift last Christmas and I just realized I hadn't read it yet. I've been on a paranormal kick lately and since I'm waiting for the next release in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, I have to fill my time with something. This fit the bill pretty well.

Quick, fun read (less than 4 hours). A good distraction for an afternoon. A little steam here and there, but tasteful. Engaging characters and I like the interplay of characters, building towards something bigger. I wish I'd realized this was a book in the middle of a series though. I don't like starting in the middle. The story stands pretty well on its own, but I like backstory. Lots of backstory. Will go back and read the rest of them, that's for sure.

Of all the Highland books I have read, this is for sure one of the BEST! I can honestly say you will feel every emotion known while reading it. Mrs. Bybee brings forth such emotion you can feel what they are going through. Your heart will break, you will laugh and be overjoyed all within the pages of this book. I fell in love with the people and of course the places of the previous books in the series and could not wait to read this one. If by chance you are looking for a GREAT Highland series I would advise to add this one to your reading list! Thank you Catherine for such a wonderful escape and I hope to be reading many more of the series soon ;)

A loyal subject :)

Like most of the McCoinnich time travel books I enjoyed this one. In this one we find yet another 20th century woman finding love with one of the 16th century McCoinnich men. Well I guess he's kind of a 20th century man too considering that he traveled to the 16th century with his mom and then stayed when she found love there. A new evil force is at work and they need all of their druid powers to fight it. An entertaining read but now I am wondering just what lies in store for the last two McCoinnich children Cian and Amber. I am sure that Catherine Bybee will find a way to wrap it all up!

Helen finds herself using her intuition in an effort to find a missing teenage boy. On her trip to Scotland, she finds more than she bargained for.

this is a worthy follow up to the MacCoinnich trilogy, another delightful romantic fantasy. Personally, I didn't think much of the main character; I thought she was a pain in the rear end, so have had to mark this book a 3 instead of a 4. But, as I so much enjoyed the previous books of this story, I can't wait for the next of the series.

Hurry up Ms Bybee - let us know what happens to Amber!!!

Another great story in the series! I thought it was going to be the last one, but I am so happy that there will be more. Can't wait to read Amber's story (and possibly Cian's?) The only problem I had, was that I was reading the Nook version, and there were a lot of typos, missing words, and unfinished, confusing sentences. I am assuming it was caused when transferring the printed book to an e-book, but I do wish someone had checked it over a little bit. Other than that, the storyline was great!

Love the entire MacCoinnich Time Travel Series, but was not as captivated by Highland Shifter as the first three. Not quite fond of Helen's character ~ perhaps not as well-developed as the other female characters I have grown to love. Didn't really understand what Simon was all that attracted to ~ that being said; I still loved the humor Ms. Bybee always manages to use throughout all her novels & who couldn't help love Mrs. Dawson? She was awesome!!

I wish that the shifting part had come into play more and that Helen didn't get to be able to move through time however she wants. Also kinda annoyed about the whole bonding thing, because it binds souls together, and hasn't been used since the first book - what's the point?

On the other hand holy shit that epilogue was awesome Amber's guy is a Druid hot box.
