The Unit #21

Gridlocked

Rate this book
As the unit's field operatives continue to pursue the mass murderer they have dubbed "UniPerp", they must contend with his changing methods and ability to alter his appearance to avoid capture. He, in turn, is determined to draw them out so he can enact his final act of revenge on those he believes have wrong him.

Meanwhile, a perfect storm of events is unfolding that will result in the collapse of a massive area of the United States electrical grid. One is a dangerous hurricane, churning toward the Gulf coast. The other is a hacker who has managed to access the grid's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system. When the grid goes down, the team must devote their attention to finding and apprehending the hacker.

This installation of the team's story will keep you turning the pages, from Edge's confession to Doc Andy at the beginning of the book to Hank's shocking declaration at the end.

I'll state my usual bias as the author of the book. I revisit my books periodically to make minor corrections and occasionally update the interior design of the book.

This book is actually the set-up for the series finale, which is being written now. In it, the reader gets more of the background on "UniPerp": a criminal they have been chasing for the entire series. While the unit's Field Team of operatives is investigating another case of a hacker who disabled a large portion of the nation's electrical grid system, "UniPerp" commits a murder deliberately chosen to stun Hank, the series's main character. How she reacts to the final revelation of his act puts her over the edge. Can she regain her prior commitment to justice, or will she find herself becoming the very thing she hates?

As always for this series, the Unit gets swept up in a nail-biting race to stop a criminal from causing widespread death and devastation to the country. In this case the villain is in denial that her actions are anthing but harmless computer hacking pranks, despite growing evidence to the contrary. At risk: our nation's electric grid. In an ongoing theme in this series the Unit members and their archenemy nicknamed Uniperp are circling closer in their respective searches for each other! The hallmarks of this book include a gripping plot, believable characters, excellent background research and the inevitable humor that is a side effect of any law enforcement agency's struggles with long hours of training intersperced with heart-pounding action. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
