Nekoyama, worn out after another long day at the office, stops at a therapeutic massage parlor -- only to discover that it's run by a cat! Not only that, but the cat actually does the massaging?! As the professional "meowsseur" digs soft toe beans into Nekoyama's aching muscles, his heart warms and his worries melt away. This is only the beginning, as he and other world-weary workers are about to meet the other feline professionals who have mastered pawfully cute techniques to reduce human stress.
Cute doesn’t even begin to describe this. From their adorable little faces to their cute little paws. I instantaneously fell in love. I’m so excited to start the next volume.
After years of being delightfully surprised by creative and odd manga concepts, I start to think that I've seen it all. And then something like Cat Massage Therapy comes along …
So Nekoyama is worn out after another hard day at the office. On an impulse, he stops at a therapeutic massage parlor. But the manager is a cat. Who is also the masseur ("meowsseur"). It turns out to be exactly what he needs, and visits to get his back worked by the manager's magic toe beans become a regular thing. We meet the trainees–kittens–and the parlor employees even visit Nekoyama's workplace to de-stress everyone.
The cute is strong with this one, make no mistake. It's every bit as warm and cuddly and delightful as an actual cat. Of course it's fluff. That's the point! I have no idea how long this premise can keep going, but apparently there are at least two more volumes.
This is also a book that you want in physical form. Why? See that cover? Embossed. Toe. Beans. For the full experience, your Kindle just won't do. Highly recommended!
A stressed office worker named Nekoyama visits a massage parlor run by a cat. The cat and its kitten trainees make an on-site visit to give massage therapy to Nekoyama's coworkers. It's 126 pages of cats kneading, crawling, and napping on people to help them destress. It's cute, but that's all it is.
Maybe a villain or crisis will be introduced in the next volume? (How can there be a next volume?)
THIS IS THE CUTEST PIECE OF MEDIA THAT I HAVE EVER CONSUMED IN MY ENTIRE DEPRESSED LIFEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🤧
It's the best reminder to take things easy and enjoy the good things in life! Capitalism works hard, but cats work harder!
There are no high stakes, there's not really much of a story line. This is just freaking cute and a good time.
Now, I want a cat even more. Nothing makes me feel happier and more fulfilled in life than when a cat picks me to be their bakery or bed.
If you need a pick me up, this is definitely a great choice! The second volume is out now and the third one is out in September. So get to going 'awwwwwwwww!!!!!' now!!!!
If you could explode from Cute, I would have done so reading this. Every single panel is the most adorable thing ever. How will I survive multiple volumes?
I absolutely loved this! It's sweet, cute, funny, and tons of adorable cats. Cat lovers must read. It'll make you warm and fuzzy. If you get the physical copy, you can feel the toe beans on the cover ;)
"Oh my!! Their very presence is soothing my soul! It's like they're a living massage!"
I recently saw someone on Twitter share something along the lines of psychologists hate this anime (their tweet was in regards to some kind of anime) because it gives free therapy and comfort to people. As I was reading this volume, that tweet was one of the first things that came to mind because if the goal of this manga is to make the reader relax, then this volume very much successfully accomplished just that!
Outside of that tweet I mentioned, the quote I shared in the beginning is EXACTLY how I felt from the first few pages! This manga is PACKED with cat cuteness that regardless if you are a cat person or not, there is something so adorable about these cats (and kittens!) that really makes you forget your stress of the day and just smile.
What was surprising is that there are a few moments that I think highlight the importance of exercising as well as stretching before bed to help relax (which I honestly need to try because I always go to bed with tense shoulders), but like the character who is getting the advice/massage, it was hard to concentrate on what Manager was saying because he's just too cute! I'm only a reader and it was hard to really comprehend Manager's words because I was too being focusing on how nice it would be to be massaged like that! LOL!
I also love how there is a special emphasis on how cute and nice the toe beans are! You can really feel how huge a difference they make when each person gets massaged. And not just the toe beans, but also the warmth from a cat and the gentle "vibrations" of a cat purring. My favorite massage was definitely the heart massage! I related to the guy's coworkers so much because I want one too!!
AND THE TRAINEES!!! THEY ARE SO CUTE!!
The humor in this story is really nice and for some reason found it refreshing to other cat manga! (Though it could be that I haven't read any cat manga in a while, so this was a nice change compared to humor I've been reading in non-cat manga.) There is the occasional cat pun, but I think more of the relatability of the patrons who are getting massages is what makes this to be funny. The expressions they make are always hilarious! I never thought about an idea like this of a cat giving massages (and giving GOOD massages at that!), but it really jumps off the page as funny and comforting.
Overall, this was a really fun read and SO glad my library had this volume! (And that a friend recommended checking it out!) The ending had me really interested in what will happen next because I'm sure it will be just as happy of a read as this one, but unfolds a little bit differently. I won't say how though because #spoilers! ;)
It's not that this book is bad; it's just not my cup of tea. I saw another student rate it, and I thought my stepdaughter would LOVE the series. She lived in Japan, and she loves cats. It has her name written all over it. I ordered all three books in the series and thought I'd read them before I sent them on to her. Well, I made it through the first one. They're about a group of cats who run a massage parlor and who give extraordinary massages because of their nubby little toe beans. Yes, you read that correctly. The cats are very cute. The story is very cute. It's all just very cute and very Japanese. If you like manga or anime and/or if you love cats, you will probably be crazy over these. They're just not for me.
I bought Cat Massage Therapy, vol. 1 (story and art by Haru Hisakawa) on a whim when I worked at Barnes & Noble. It has a very cute cover and who isn’t intrigued by a cat massage therapist? Turns out, cuteness goes only so far. This is a weird story and the pictures are weird too. Sometimes there is almost something sexual about the characters’ enjoyment of petting and stroking the cats and being “massaged” by them. I don’t think I’ll read another one.
The story is basic: man walks into a massage parlor run by a cat. The cat’s name is Manager. Or he (he?) is merely the Manager and has no name. Or it’s both. Anyway, the cat apparently runs this business and payment is rendered in specific cat food and treats. How the Manager pays rent is not addressed. Of course, the cat speaks and no one finds that odd. He also handles documents with his invisible thumb? Anyway, enough of logic. The Manager gives the overworked, stressed out guy a great massage. There’s a drawing of the man’s face in some kind of ecstatic groan with the words “Ahhhhhhh!!” helpfully written next to his face. He also thinks at one point: “The vibrations (from the purring cat) are spreading out from my back to the rest of my body! Ahh! There are no words to describe this bliss!!” What the hell is that cat doing to him? At any rate, the guy takes the Manager to work and everyone is pretty excited to get a massage from this cat. Plus, there are trainees; that is, kittens. The kittens talk too. There’s a panel of a woman sitting at a desk with kittens asleep in her palms. The kittens awake and begin kneading and sucking on the woman’s palms and fingers...and it’s the most bizarre looking drawing. It’s so suggestive. The kittens/trainees look as if they are sucking on nipples and other um, body parts. It’s creepy and sexualized. And freaky as hell. The characters say things like, “Their very presence is soothing my soul!” and “Few souls can resist the power of the Manager’s toe beans!”
So that’s basically the story. Recommended only for cat lovers and manga lovers. It’s very silly but I figured it probably would be. I will also confess I read it now just so I could try to catch up on my reading challenge. More serious reading to come.
I really wanted to love this because it seemed like the perfect cat manga. I really love cute books/ manga about cats, but what I find with cat manga is that 98% of them are episodic and marketed towards children (fair enough) and so they have like 3 words per page and I get a bit bored with most of them.
Although this was an episodic manga, it was cute and had a lot of WORDS which I enjoyed. I'm a sucker for every single cute cat in here. However, I won't be continuing the series. Maybe it's me looking too far into the artwork, but I find it kind of suggestive?
I thought at first because they were getting a massage and it's usual to have those types of reactions when pain is being relieved, but ummmmmm
I still think it's cute, but I found some of the scenes a bit weird so I won't be continuing the series unfortunately.
A cute manga about a business man who stumbles upon a massage parlor run by cats. At first he is questioning, a cat masseuse?! But soon he is addicted and visits the massage parlor every day after work. Soon he hatches a plan to bring the massage cat (and apprentice kittens) to his corporate office to drum up some more business. It's an overwhelming hit and soon his whole office is addicted and the work vibes have never been better. There isn't much of a story, but it's cute and it makes me want to get a massage from a cat.
It was about 98% wholesome and 2% unnecessarily sexual. For the most part it was really just cute, but some of the artwork was…suggestive…and it really didn’t need to be.
I’m not sure if I’ll read more if I’m being honest. However, the kittens were so cute! I wanna keep seeing their sweet little faces 🥺
Format Read: Paperback Review: Very cute story about cat’s giving massages and improving the lives of people. Recommended For: Anyone who wants cute cats in a graphic novel.
There was another reviewer who echoed my thoughts completely on this title. Most of it is sweet adorable cats and the soul sucking nature of the business world in Japan. However there is this slight hint that there is a creepy undertone to this story. Just the smallest hint that this could turn unnecessarily sexual in nature. I don't know if that is how it was translated or if it was implied in the original story but these elements keep me from enjoying the story completely. Mostly wholesome. I just hope future volumes don't sexualize the cats.
Are you: A cat lover? Or like me, you desperately want a cat but do not own one? So living vicariously through the most gorgeous cat art ever is your only choice? Did you have a long day and want something cute, simple and warm to read and unwind?
If you tick any of the following criteria, I assure you this full-colour(!) manga got your back.
This series is super adorable! I love the color pages and the story is light and fun. We follow a businessman who goes to a massage parlor, which is owned by a cat. This cat administers the massage in adorable ways, purring, kneading, ect. It's cute but doesn't have a lot of substance to it. Definitely something I'd recommend if you want something cute and fluffy.
