Delve into the thrilling first installment of the all-new Skye Druids series by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant, where magic reigns and danger abounds.
Skye isn’t just an island. It’s a home. A refuge. But not to Elodie MacLean. Not anymore. Tragedy tore her world apart and then took the one thing she felt made her whole. She vowed she’d never return, but that’s exactly where she ends up. Now, surrounded by the ghosts of her past, Elodie must navigate her version of Hell and try to make peace with herself and her family. But someone or something doesn’t want her on Skye, and she finds herself attacked—and this time not by her personal demons.
Scott Ryan has a mission: uncover who has been killing Druids and why. When his quest takes him to the beautiful Isle of Skye, he doesn’t think anything could captivate him more than the land itself—until he lays eyes on the breathtaking and confident beauty his leader sent him to find. However, it’s clear that she has trust issues, and he can’t reveal his plans—at least, not yet. But he’s always been sure of his ability to sway a person, and she’s a challenge he's more than happy to accept, especially when he finds he will do anything to protect her.
With so much history and so many secrets, victory is anything but guaranteed for the couple and their allies. And the forces at work, those who wish to rule the Scottish isle and all those who reside there, have a plan that nobody will see coming.
Donna is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over a hundred novels. Her most popular series is the breathtaking Dark King (aka Dragon King) series featuring dragons, immortal Highlanders, and the Fae.
In addition to her novels, Donna has written short stories, novellas, and novelettes for digital-first and print release. She has been dubbed as giving the “paranormal genre a burst of fresh air” by the San Francisco Book Review. Her work has been hailed as having “deft plotting and expert characterization” by Publisher’s Weekly and “sizzling” by RT Book Reviews.
She has been recognized with awards from both bookseller and reader contests including the National Reader’s Choice Award, Booksellers Best Award, as well as the coveted K.I.S.S. Award from RT Book Reviews.
Donna travels often for various speaking engagements, conferences, and book signings. She is also a frequent workshop presenter at national conferences such as RT Book Lovers Convention and Thrillerfest, as well as local chapters.
Born and raised in Texas, she also has ties across the border in Louisiana. Growing up with two such vibrant cultures, her Cajun side of the family taught her the “spicy” side of life while her Texas roots gave her two-steppin’ and bareback riding. She is never far from her faithful 80 pound dog, Sisko, or her three cats. She can often be found at the movies or bookstore with her children. Or buying makeup. And shoes.
have read and enjoyed Grant’s contemporary Heart of Texas series, so I thought I’d try one of Druid series. Iron Ember is first in a new series, and I decided this would be a good place to start. It kind of reminded me of Nora Roberts, and I slipped in.
Skye is an island and refuge for Druids. After tragedy struck, Elodie MacLean left the island and never planned to return. She returns to prepare her family home for sale with the help of her sister, but it seems something doesn’t want Elodie there or to unlock secrets regarding her lost gift and more…
Elodie isn’t exactly loveable, but I admired her for facing her past and admitting her own shortcomings. My opinion of Elodie softened as I learned more about her past and saw her interact with Scott Ryan.
Scott Ryan has been tasked with finding out who is killing druids and that brings him to the island. Here he finds beauty and danger. Scott hails from Edinburgh, Scotland, where druids are also dying. He is hoping he can convince Elodie to join his crusade. I enjoyed getting his point of view and found him to be a worthy hero.
Can a girl with serious trust issues open up about her past and trust not just Scott but others on the island before it’s too late? I for one, needed to find out and quickly found myself drawn to the island and the secrets it holds. Will the ancient ones aid them?
The romance was complicated by omissions but felt genuine, and I enjoyed watching Elodie open up and trust. We get plenty of mystery and suspense as we learn about Elodie’s magic, the danger and history.
I learned after listening that this is a spinoff to her other series involving druids and while it works as a standalone; I am curious about the history and want to explore them, particularly ones containing characters that crossover. If you have read/listen to them, let me know where I should start.
4.25stars--IRON EMBER is the first instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult SKYE DRUIDS paranormal/fantasy romance series-a spin off from the author’s REAPER series which in turn is a spin off from the author’s many interconnected series and stories. This is Druids Elodie MacLean and Druid Scott Ryan’s story line. IRON EMBER should not be read as a stand alone- I recommend reading DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND (Reaper 15) for back story and cohesion as many of the events of the current story line are as of a direct result of the events in Dark Alpha’s Command. Several characters from the other series including Reaper Balladyn and Druid Rhona (Dark Alpha’s Command) and some of the original Dark Warriors / Dark Sword characters appear as secondary and supporting characters.
SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, betrayal and vengeance forced a take-over of power on the Isle of Skye but someone or something is killing the Druids, not only on the Isle of Skye, but around the world including Edinburgh Scotland. With the focus on the death of the Druids on the Isle of Skye, Balladyn and Rhona begin an investigation that reveals a danger targeting the Druids and the MacLean family, in particular.
Told from third person perspective IRON EMBER follows Elodie MacLean’s return to the Isle of Skye. Fifteen years earlier Elodie’s life spiralled out of control, and our heroine found herself acting out and misbehaving in a manner that labelled her persona non grata on the Isle of Skye. Having lived in Edinburgh for a number of years, her return to the Isle of Skye to face the demons from her past finds Elodie coming face to face with her future in the guise of Druid Scott Ryan but Scott has a secret, a secret that may push Elodie out of his life, a life that may no longer be under his control. Estranged from her family, Elodie struggles in the wake the loss of her magic, and the memory of what may or may not have happened. As the attacks against Elodie, and the Druids on the Isle of Skye increase, the past resurfaces revealing the truth about what happened and why. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Scott and Elodie, and the potential fall-out as Scott’s lies of omission threaten our heroine, and a predator demanding revenge focuses their energy of the Isle of Skye.
The relationship between Scott and Elodie begins when Scott, and his best friend Filip offer to help with repairs on Elodie MacLean’s family cottage. Remaining empty for close to fifteen years, the cottage is in disarray, having fallen behind in upkeep and love. As Scott and Elodie’s attraction to one another turns into something more, Elodie finds herself facing secrets, lies and betrayal at the hands of the man with whom she is falling in love, and the family with whom she is no longer close. The $ex scenes are limited but intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters many of whom cross over from the author’s numerous interconnected series including warriors, Druids, Reapers and Dragons. We are introduced to Scott’s friend Filip, their ‘mentor and leader’ Georgiana, as well as Elodie’s siblings Edie and Elias.
IRON EMBER is a detailed and complex story that continues to build upon the events of Dark Alpha’s Command. Balladyn’s mate Rhona is the new leader of the Druids on the Isle of Skye, having won by default in the face of deception and betrayal by the former people in charge. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is passionate and captivating; the characters are energetic and charismatic.
These latest books read and feel like they are just being churned out. The heroine’s last name was even wrong in the last chapter. That is just sloppy. The story was nothing fancy. The characters’ backstories could have been greatly more detailed. This book was just flat.
And now it's the druids' turn. That all the realms of Donna's books converge in this new serial is so cool! I can't wait to read more about Skye's druids.

Dark World continuation This is the first book of the Skye Druids series but follows immediately after Dark Alpha’s Command. In this book we meet Elodie MacLean, who has come back to Skye to help her sister get their parents’ house ready to sell. A terrible tragedy happened over a decade prior, but since neither sister, nor an absent brother plan on living in the house it needs to be cleaned, repaired and sold. Elodie is a druid, but her magic has been gone since the tragic event. She meets Scot Ryan, and the brother of his best friend are on Skye, having come from Edinburgh to try and solve the murders of Druids there. They are looking for Elodie, and when they meet her, and hear she is looking for help to get the cottage repaired, they offer their services. Donna Grant weaves an interesting story reminiscent of her earlier Dark World books. She plots out an intricate storyline for the reader to follow, and while following we get glimpses of other characters from prior books. I can say that the start of this book dragged for me-I couldn’t figure out who these characters were and why they were important. But Donna Grant had a plot, and it is full of twists and turns, and leads the reader to a satisfying conclusion. I received and ARC of this book from the author through BookFunnel and this is my honest opinion.
Elodie is a girl that went away from Skye - Druid island when the tragedy strikes and sets up her path differently. Now she's back to her hometown to repair with some help a home that she wants to sell. Along the way comes Scott, also a druid, but from another part of the country - Edinburgh, and there bad things happen - Druids are killed! And after that kills on Skye begin as well - so those two will have to join their powers to love it, and we will see also our beloved characters from earlier books by Ms. Grant. Who is a friend? Who is the enemy? Will there be a massacre or there will be some kind of solution to it, especially when old secrets will come to the light and attack them in the face? Another great read from this author!
I found out this book is a spin off of a spin off series so I felt like I was missing something important. Not a bad storyline though. Kinda repetitive but not in the worst way. I'm going to have to start the dark universe I think before I continue.
It has been a long awaited series since Ms. Grant informed us it was coming. What an amazing beginning. The Isle of Skye is a place I have wanted to know more about in this series and Elodie and Scott's story was a fantastic beginning. I can't wait for Book 2
Iron Ember: This is the first book in the spin off about the Skye Druids taking place right on the heels of Dark Alphas Command Balladyn and Rhonas book. Every time I start reading one of Donna Grants books I can not put them down! Donna Grant’s amazingly wonderful imagination takes us on another hunt to dismantle and destroy the Fae Others but is there more to the group that they don’t know about? Elodie has come home to Skye to fix up her family home and sell so she can move on, but can she?
Evil is creeping into Skye quickly and Elodie’s life is on the line as well as many other Druids on Skye and Edinburgh. Scott and Filip come to the rescue, but is there more to them helping her out? Being back in her family home starts to bring up old memories especially a past trauma. Scott discovers Elodie has lost her magic putting their actual plans on a spiral. With murders occurring more frequently will Scott confess his true intentions with Elodie and keep their hearts intact through it all?
This is book 1 in the Skye Druid books and will leave you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next! This amazing book takes us on a journey with these two characters and their undeniable attraction with each other. Together will Elodie finally get the answers she seeks plus find her magic and will Scott be able to bring Elodie into the fold, you will have to read and find out.
All I can say is Donna Grant you are an amazing Author you always nail it. I cannot wait to see what happens next! I am giving this book 5 stars Donna Grant’s books are so easy to read and if you haven’t read her books before this one will certainly leave you wanting more. Buy now you will not be disappointed I am so looking forward to all the future novels in any genre as Donna’s many different stories continue.
Thank you so much Donna Grant for taking our imaginations on this new adventure.
An Amazing start to another spin off series from the Dark World. This is Scott and Elodie’s story. Elodie went back to Skye, after being away for 15 years, to help her sibling get their childhood home ready for the sellers’ market. Although going back to Skye would force Elodie to face her demons, she was determined to complete her task and leave Skye as soon as possible. Things do not always work out as planned; Druids were being killed on Skye and Elodie was one of the targets. Also, unbeknown to Elodie, Scott and Filip, who was helping her with home repairs, were Druids sent, from Edinburgh, by the leader of their Organization, to ask for her assistance. Druids were being killed in their part of the country and their leader, George, was a seer, who foresaw Elodie, as the savior. Along the way, Elodie and Scott started to have feeling for each other, which complicated things further. Meanwhile, Balladyn, who is now the Warden of Skye and Rona, as their leader worked as a team along with the assistance from a Dark King, a Warrior and their Druid Mates, to help solve the mystery of who was killing the Druids. This book has a lot going on, and a great addition to the Dark World series. Another awesome read by DG and I highly recommend this book, though suggest to start at the beginning of the series.
Iron Ember is a thrilling addition to an already exciting world and will definitely leave you wanting more.
Elodie left Skye in a cloud of tragedy and scandal. The last thing she expected was to find herself back home again. Yet, there she was, trying to fix her childhood home and desperately trying to ignore the source of all her troubles. Scott, a Druid from Edinburgh, is hoping to convince Elodie to join their group’s efforts to find out who has been killing Druids all over the place. He has the magical ability to influence and charm anybody, but he is reluctant to use it on Elodie. The attraction between them is all too natural and too strong to ignore.
Donna Grant is expanding her Dark World universe with a new series focusing on the Skye Druids. Rhona and Balladyn are in charge (their story is in Dark Alpha’s Command). Rhona is still trying to find her feet as the new Druid leader and they have their hands full with this new threat.
I really enjoyed Iron Ember a lot. The first part of the book is packed with new information about Elodie’s past, the group of Druid Others, and the chilling murders of innocent Druids. It’s a lot to take in, but the pace picks up eventually and the action heats up.
Scott was a lovely surprise. He is very different from the other male lead characters in this world so far. His strength wasn’t so much in his physical or magical abilities, but in his new-found love of Skye and his loyalty to his friends and to Elodie. Elodie had so much to deal with and her story truly packed a punch.
I loved Balladyn in his role as father-figure to the Skye Druids and it was also lovely, as always, to see old friends again from all the previous books. And for this reason, I would recommend reading all the books in this universe in order. Mind you, that could take a while, since it has grown so much over the years. I can recommend this series and all the related ones if you like hot romance, strong characters, magic, and suspense.
Elodie and Scott find their happy-ever-after, but the mystery is far from solved and there are plenty of questions left unanswered.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow! What a great start to a new series. I love the fact that so many other characters from her connecting Series are involved. Since Balladyn is the warden of skye I really like having him so involved. Also, the main characters of this book Scott and Elodie have a very tumultuous time to get to their happil ever after. It’s going to be hard, waiting for the next book about the skye Druids.
Series: Skye Druids #1 Rating: 2 stars - It was ok
Elodie MacLean has reluctantly returned to Skye and is repairing her childhood home. Unfortunately, the house, and the island of Skye, is filled with painful memories that she longs to escape but first she has to survive someone trying to kill her.
This book was just ok for me. I was hoping that I would enjoy this new spin-off series but I found Elodie to be annoying which killed most of my enjoyment of reading this book. Elodie comes to Skye as a last resort and is trying to change her life around. Unfortunately, for a lot of this book we have no idea why she feels trapped or why she ran from the island to begin with. Elodie also said she wanted to change but her actions didn’t really reflect that. She pushes her sister away quite a few times and even denies her memories of the past instead of discussing it like an adult. Elodie was just a character that instantly annoyed me and it never really went away, even at the end when she was being more reasonable.
The overarching story is a continuation of the fight against the Others. This has been a long storyline that has spanned a few series now so if you haven’t read the previous series by Grant then you might be confused by the Druid’s issues with the Others. I was surprised by how little progress was actually made against figuring out who was attacking Druids. Also, I think Rhona is being very stupid in just believing Kerry is harmless and wouldn’t retaliate.
Overall, this was an ok couple but if you have not read the previous series, the overarching storyline might be slightly confusing for you.
Trigger warnings: drug and alcohol use mentioned; death of parent; abusive father; grief;
*ARC provided by the author for an honest review.*
What do you do when your life implodes and your past needs to be reconciled? Something Elodie had no desire to do, go home.
Realizing she had no other options, Elodie arrived on Skye, and the home of her childhood. There were so many emotions that were tied to this place, she wasn’t sure if she wanted or needed to confront them.
Scott accompanies Filip back to Skye under the guise of helping close his brothers estate. But, the truth is they want really want to recruit Elodie.
It took several chapters to figure out, the why of their motive's, but the truth didn’t really come out till things became dicey in the last few chapters. Other characters we meet is Edie, Elodie’s elder sister and Elias, her brother. But, the one character that is elusive till the end is Georgina Miller! And I think we will be seeing much more of her.
The build up of the suspense kept me hooked! I couldn’t put the book done till I knew what was happening and why. For a new series, this book started it out with so much intrigue, danger and of course love, I am looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Iron Ember is the first story in Grant's spinoff new series Skye Druids. Its a great start to this new series. Grant gives us a deeper look at the Druids on Skye and their lives. I highly recommend reading Dark Alpha's Command because it will give you a better understanding of characters and background. Elodie is our main female lead and Scott is our male lead. Their chemistry is a slow burn, Scott will fight his attraction until he can't fight anymore. Druids everywhere are being hurt, someone is trying to dimish their numbers. When Scott and Elodie arrive on Skye things take a scary turn. Someone is controlling the mist and is coming for Elodie. Scott has his own secrets as to why he is on Skye and Elodie has her past to face. They will have to learn to trust and forgive before they start a meaningful relationship. Grant has some of her most memorable characters make an appearance in Iron Ember. Grant has made this story interesting and has left us with enough mystery to wanna to see what happens next. I received this story as an ARC for an honest review. Happy Reading!!
Iron Ember - a wonderful and exciting expansion to Donna Grant's Dark World. We're reuniting with many of the characters we know and love, most notably Rhona and Balladyn from Dark Alpha's Command. The story of Elodie and Scott takes us into a world of steamy romance, strong characters, magic and suspense. The two finally find their happiness, but many questions remain unanswered. I would recommend that new readers read all the books in Donna Grant's Dark World in order before beginning this book. However, this may take a while, since the series has grown a lot in the meantime.
I received the book as an ARC for an honest review.
Are you ready for the next branch of the Dark World? Heck it is probably the Dark Universe by now with the Warriors, Druids, Reapers, Fae, Dragon Kings and all the rest. It is no secret I love this world Donna Grant has created and the Skye Druids are fitting right in. How can you go wrong with Rhona and Balladyn leading the charge? Yes they were in this book, and like always I lived for Balladyn being Balladyn lol. Based on the end of thee books, like the late chapter end, I don’t think Elodie’s story is completely over. Something is up with both her siblings and I am not sure if it is good or bad. Scott had me guessing the whole book, and I am not sold of him totally yet. Look, it is Donna Grant and the Dark World. I have more questions after this book then answers, but I think that is what I love about it.
Since I have not read any of the other books from Donna on Skye island I'm at a loss on the story line. The story was well written, but I had trouble following the story line and all the different characters. Overall, I did enjoy the book.
A magical island, a powerful FL, a sexy and dependable ML... I thought this book was going to have it all. Turns out it does - so much so that it's confusing as hell.
I know that this the setting and the genres heavily influence what can and can't be in a story, but the names and characters were so confused in my mind at the halfway point that I couldn't figure out who the "bad guy" was. I understand that it might have been intentional, but it really doesn't lend itself to a pleasurable reading experience. That, on top of how many different magical creatures with various powers and the extent that their powers can be, was eye-crossing.
I found the main characters to be pretty one dimensional and uninteresting. Our FL, back only to leave again, is completely untrusting and detached, focused on not repeating the sins of her past. This same FL then turns around and falls in love almost instantly (for no deep reason that I could find) and has sex right away... Simply because she's felt so numb for so many years and this man, Scott (our ML), has finally succeeded in making her feel something.
While I understand that recent politics and social ideas make writing romance more complicated nowadays, I wasn't all that impressed with our couple(s). Nearing the end in particular, it was feeling very forced and sadly lacking in that intimate balance I think we're all looking for. I found myself losing interest with how very neutral everything came to feel. No tension at all.
The ending was highly unsatisfactory. Which, yes, I am aware that this is part of a series and the author desperately wants the ending of this book to encourage people to read the next one, but the more I think about how rushed and unfished it felt, it doesn't really make me feel all that excited for the next installment. Especially since our main couple didn't really get an ending of their own. I might end up reading a little bit of the next one to give this series a fair chance, but my expectations are not high. (Tbh, I'm only going to check it out if I'm absolutely desperate for a time filler at this point, because it's about Elias. If it was about anyone else, I'd probably not even give it any thought ngl.)
All in all, I do not recommend this series at this time. It sports an interesting underlying plot, but the other plots (romance, drama, friendship, etc.) seem to fall flat or feel superficial.
Elodie MacLean reluctantly returns to Skye. She plans to fix up her childhood home to sell and then leave again. However, the place dredges up dark and painful memories. Something sinister is killing druids, and Elodie is their next target. Her secret, the one she wants no one else to know about, makes her vulnerable to their attacks. Can Elodie overcome the ghosts of the past? Will she figure out who is behind the druid killings? Scott Ryan is a Druid from Edinburgh, Scotland. He has a two-part mission: the first to find out who is killing Druids, and the second to convince Elodie to join his organization. Scott never expected to be captivated by the woman and the island of Skye. Something about Elodie makes him want to protect her from mysterious threats. Can Scott help Elodie face her terrible past? Or will his association with his organization elicit distrust? I admire Elodie’s inner strength. It had to be difficult to return to a place that harbors such devastating memories. Elodie even faced the hostility of people she had wronged years ago. She knew the only person in the wrong as herself, that there was no excuse for her past actions. I just want to say – I am so happy that we finally get a male Druid as the main hero. It is a nice change of pace from the usual Fae, Dragon King, and Warrior type. It did take me a while to warm up to Scott. I like that he did not want to use his charming ability with Elodie. I admire Scott’s decision not to use his charm or magical ability with Elodie. He knew she was still trying to cope with her childhood trauma, and he did not want to add any more emotional baggage. What I liked the most about Scott is how he tried to help Elodie overcome her trauma. He genuinely wanted to help her come to grips with everything. IRON EMBER is the first book in Donna Grant’s paranormal romance series, SKYE DRUIDS. This is another spin-off from her DARK SWORD/DARK WARRIOR, DARK KINGS/DRAGON KINGS, and REAPER world. DARK ALPHA’S COMMAND, book fifteen in the REAPER books, is a prequel and introduction to the new series. IRON EMBER can standalone, but I highly recommend reading the other series to understand all that has led up to the current events of the world. Ulrik and Eliliah (from TORCHED – book thirteen in the DARK KINGS series) and Broc and Sonya (from DARKEST HIGHLANDER – book six in the DARK SWORD series) play a vital role in the story. It is great re-visiting with these characters from the other series again! Trigger warnings: abuse
A new spinoff series begins in the remarkable Dark World of Donna Grant, one revolving around some of our favorite beings—the Skye Druids. I was a little skeptical that this one would be able to live up to some of the other spin-off series but I thoroughly enjoyed this first book and how it picked up right when the last book in the world of the Reapers left off. This story was filled with intrigue, secrets, betrayals, and ultimately the unexpected love of two people on seemingly opposing sides of the battle. Elodie MacLean has returned to the Isle of Skye in Scotland for only one reason—she’s hit rock bottom and has no other option in her life at the moment. Determined to do what is needed to fix up the family cabin in order to sell it and take her portion of the profit, she is pushing her past and the hideous truths she lived with there away, but the worst part is that she has lost her magick and doesn’t even consider herself a druid anymore. Scott Ryan is on the isle for only one reason, to bring Elodie back to Edinburgh and get to her join the fight to save the lives of druids everywhere, because he’s been told she is the key to the coming battle. But once they meet Elodie and Scott’s loose friendship soon turns into so much more as enemies begins to come out of the woodwork and Elodie’s past and list if blown wide open. They must come to trust in one another and their allies fully or they will lose the battles ahead and most likely the war being fought on so many fronts to end the Druids of Skye, and all druids in the end forever. I loved this story though I cried through so much of it. Elodie’s passion for life is just gone, but she never gives up fighting and never quits believing she can find her way back, that strength so much of what makes her such a great heroine. Scott might have ulterior motives in the beginning, but in the end the only reasons for anything he does is the love he’s developed for Elodie and the fear for her safety at every turn. I enjoyed reading their love story and seeing the passion sparking between them as they grew closer to one another. I loved seeing some of my favorite druids from past branches of the overall Grant worlds and seeing them all mingling together for the good of all druids. I am really looking forward to more in this series and seeing them ultimately kick ass against the hideous villain they don’t even yet realize is in their midst in disguise. Another masterpiece for Donna Grant and I wish I had even a fraction of her talent.
Donna Grant is at it again, weaving her magical spell, this time it is with the Skye Druids. IRON EMBER is book #1 in her new series and it was another fascinating tale in her Dark World universe. Once again it is a story of mystery, suspense, betrayal, and a love that was unexpected. Elodie MacLean has returned to Skye to repair and sell her family home, then she expects to leave with her share of the sale. However, nothing is ever easy, and things aren't as they appear.
Elodie has secrets, she is running from her past, her magic is gone, and she no longer sees herself as a Druid. Scott Ryan has come to Skye with only one purpose ... to take Elodie back to Edinburgh. He believes she is the only one who has the ability to save the lives of all Druids, as Druids are mysteriously dying everywhere. Scott becomes entranced by Skye, he feels as though he belongs there, but he's also equally enchanted by Elodie, developing feelings he didn't expect. Elodie is no longer the woman she once was, but she is not a quitter and is determined to fight her way back. I loved how their friendship evolved through mutual trust and understanding, then finally through the passion they had for each other.
Evil lurks on Skye, evil that comes from within, but what is the reason? How can it be overcome? Will Rhona and Balladyn be able to help Elodie regain the powers she lost? What exactly are her powers? Why have they been kept hidden for so long? Yet again, Ms. Grant has presented an intriguing story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Old and new characters were woven meticulously into the story, so if you haven't read any of the previous Dark World novels I highly recommend doing so. Next up in the Skye Druids series is Shoulder The Skye, and I cannot wait to see where Donna takes us next.
Okay, call me biased — but when one of your favourite authors drops a new series, what else can you be but thrilled? Iron Ember, the first fiery instalment in Donna Grant’s Skye Druids series, is everything I craved and more. As a fresh branch of the sprawling, magnetic Dark Universe (or a juicy spinoff of the Reapers series, for the veterans out there), it feels less like cracking open a new book and more like stepping through the front door of your most beloved haunt.
For those of us who’ve devoured practically every page of the Dark Universe, this isn’t just another fantasy novel — it’s an invitation to immerse yourself in a living, breathing world that grows more intricate and enchanting with every chapter. This time around, druids are being picked off across the globe, and the stakes are high enough to make your pulse race. But fear not, because the crew, a mix of captivating new faces and cherished crossovers from Grant’s other series, are hell-bent on solving the murders and restoring balance.
Also, let’s be honest: seeing Balladyn pop up like the ultimate bad-boy cherry on top? Pure bliss. Yes, I might have a weakness for a villain with a heart of tarnished gold — sue me. Having him as a secondary character is the unexpected treat I didn’t dare hope for but gladly devoured.
Donna Grant’s signature elegance is on full display here, weaving intricate plots laced with passion and chemistry that never tips into the crass. The romance, while deliciously central, never overshadows the labyrinthine twists that make the Dark Universe an ever-evolving entity — a place you willingly lose yourself in, book after book, with no desire to be found.
And that ending? The bombshell Grant drops in the final pages of Iron Ember is enough to leave you gasping and frantically checking release dates for the next instalment. So, I’ll be here, tea in hand, blanket ready, waiting for whatever sorcery she conjures up next. Bring it on, Mrs Grant — I’m more than ready for the ride.

There is also a mysterious character introduced, George (aka Georgina). Is she friend or foe, good or evil? While Scott and Filip believe in her, Rhona and the others are not sure about her and her intentions at all.
As always, Ms. Grant rocks! She truly is a word weaver and pulls you in from the first pages. Her characters are well defined and for the most part you feel like you know them.
Elodie has had such a hard time since "the incident". Being as lost as she is, she has made many poor choices. She needs to deal with it so she can have a chance at life.
I really enjoyed Elodie's story and look forward to more. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy.
With this book, I predict another Donna Grant solid gold series.
It hits the ground running and doesn't even stop when you slam into the ending. I predict you'll also be wanting to read book 2 right after. My head is still reeling from everything that happened in this book.
I won't give much away as it's a 1st in series but I will be vague with a few tidbits.
Elodie returns to Skye after being gone 15 years and vowing never to go back, to repair and sale the family cottage at the behest of her younger sister Edie. Simple right? Not even close for Elodie. She had very bad memories of being on Skye. However when her TRUE backstory comes to light, I personally, needed my trusty tissue box.
Filip, another Skye Druid who left some time ago, and a Druid named Scott are tasked to bring Elodie back to Edinburgh due to Druids being mercilessly murdered. Of course nothing goes as planned but Scott and Elodie have some smoldering scenes. Wink wink.
Coinciding with the three's return, Skye Druids are not being murdered as well. However, by magic and in a horric fashion.
I was taken aback at the villain. At first I thought they'd just drank a keg of the "kool aid" but then realized they were just rotten and evil to the core. What a shame.
Later in the book, Elodie's brother comes into the story much more. Right when she needs him the most I might add.
We also have some wonderful special guests who I believe will be making regular appearances in the whole series.
All in all, this book offers intrigue, drama, smoldering scenes, treachery, murder, forgiveness, etc. It's also written in the way Donna Grant writes all her books: brilliantly leaving her readers wanting more!

Another great offshoot from the Dragon Kings/Reapers series - Skye Druids is a pnr/fantasy romance set on the Isle of Skye.
Elodie is a Druid without her magic. She estranged herself from her family after her mother killed her non-magical father. But she has hit rock bottom and returned to stay in the family cottage that was once home, hoping to flip it and sell it as soon as possible.
Scott is another Druid. His magic has led him to Skye looking for vengeance after the murder of his friend in Edinburgh. He needs something from Elodie and cons his way into helping her fix up the cottage. Soon, the danger is near yet again and Scott finally realises that the enemy he seeks may be closer than he thinks!
3rd person POV, PNR Fantasy based in contemporary Scotland. Elodie dealt with her tragedy the only way she knew how, but in the process, she tore a lot of families apart and caused misery with her actions. I enjoyed watching her search within herself to heal her emotions, rather than just lashing out at those around her as she has done previously.
Scott's lies of omission may seem harmless at first but they soon come back to haunt him and his burgeoning feelings for Elodie. The intimacy between them is intense and chemistry filled but without being over the top or getting in the way of the storyline.
There are cameo appearances from some of my favourite characters in this fantasy universe including Balladyn and Fiona. This is a great way to introduce the new series into the work and help you place them in reference to the other series. There is plenty of action and as usual the Big Bad is never quite who you thought it to be. I'm so looking forward to seeing how all this "sibling rivalry" works its way out!
Iron Ember may be the start of a new series, but in fact it is a continuation of Donna Grant's Dark Universe. I've been reading about the Dark Universe from the beginning, starting with the Warriors, the Dark Kings of Dreagan, the Dragon Kings of Zora, the Reapers, and now the Druids of Skye. They are all interconnected . . . and now various characters from the previous series are appearing together in various formations to take on the newest battle.
In Iron Ember, the battle has now shifted to the Druid Others. [I'm getting tired of the ever expanding group of Others.] Unfortunately, who the Druid Others are is rather vague and undefined. Elodie is not a very sympathetic character until the "big reveal" when her mother explains what happened years before. Additionally, her relationship with Scott vacillates too much, which has much to do with Scott's issues as Elodie's. And then there is Kerry who appears every few chapters. Kerry is a character who grows and changes as the story progresses. She is someone who will continue to play a role in this series. Finally, there is the Epilogue, which considers what needs to be done in the future, presented from the perspective of each of the different groups. It hints at what to expect in the next novel in this series. Maybe it's because I listened to the audio book version (and I dislike audio books because it's hard to go back to "reread" particular details) but I had a hard time relating to the characters and their issues.
Ultimately, I can't imagine reading this novel without having read all (or most) of the previous novels in the Dark Universe. This is definitely not a standalone novel. The jury has yet to reach a verdict on this "new" series.
The Skye Druids Series has a thrilling beginning with Iron Ember.
Elodie vowed she would never come back to Skye. Reaching the lowest point she's ever been in her life has her returning home to regroup. Steps away from rock-bottom, and with nothing left to lose, Elodie returns to her childhood home. What should be a simple task of cleaning a home to get it to sell has Elodie facing her current predicament face on, but memories of things that happened in the house, are beginning to plague her more so than normal.
Scott has two objectives on his mind. The first to figure out who is killing the Druids. The second is to find a woman who was seen in a vision to help them complete their task. Scott truly believes in his cause, as he has lost friends near and dear to him. When Scott realizes the woman he was sent to find may not be able to do what his leader wants of her he realizes he is beyond protective of her and will do whatever he can to keep her safe.
The magic, the mystery and the secrets. Iron Ember is a thrilling beginning to what I am sure is going to be another fantastic series from Donna Grant. The Druids are the target and someone wants some dead. Skye is a place of refuge and sanctuary for those that follow the Druid path. Skye also holds a lot of secrets. One comes home and the other comes seeking a powerful druid hoping to make a difference. Little did they know what they could do and be for each other. I have to admit I was a little iffy on Scott at first, but he did come around. I do think that Elodie and Scott complemented each other beautifully. I love how the magic literally hangs in the air in Skye. The Druids are literally having their world rocked, there’s a power struggle in place. I can only imagine what the struggles for the Druids are going to be and can’t wait for the romances that will come within the series.
