Viking Omegaverse #2.5

A Meeting of Wolves

Rate this book
He needed someone to temper him. Someone more mature, to tame his wild edges.

But he was a dangerous young man; and I had some wild edges of my own.

A decade before the events of the main series...

It's winter in Dublin. The entire settlement is preparing for a wedding: Olaf Gofraidsson, Jarl of Dublin, is about to marry the favourite daughter of the High King of Ireland.

Ivar could not care less for his brother's wedding. In fact he'd much rather it didn't happen. They were so focused on their goal of chasing creatures of ancient myth, and now his brother is settling down.

When the bride arrives however, she has a vanguard of Viking mercenaries. And one of them catches Ivar's attention.

A young man who wears a peculiar X-shaped brand...

**For the best reading experience, this title should be read after Taming the Wolves**
This novella has graphic M/M content between two Alphas. Books in the Viking Omegaverse typically contain violence and explicit sexual content; however, the relationships are respectful & consensual, if a little rough between Alphas.

USAT bestselling author Lyx Robinson spent her childhood in Brittany, where she became familiar with all sorts of old Celtic legends and landscapes. Living in a place with such strong tethers to its past made her naturally inclined towards fantasy, which is what she loves to read and write the most.

A late-comer to romance, Lyx fell head-first into the omegaverse in 2020 and decided to combine what she loves writing most - historical fantasy and erotica.

As a digital artist, Lyx's covers feature her own illustrations unless otherwise stated.

Re-read/ first time reading to the end after reading book 3

First time reading was a DNF for me @30% and a 2 star experience overall -> It's now a 3 star rating

Because I am currently listening to the audiobook version of the series (highly recommended, btw!! I am currently listening to book 2, mostly while doing chores, and it's amazing), I thought this would be a good time to revisit this little novella that I dropped last time.

This time I read all of it and it was all right. However, my initial point that this was essentially an off-topic info-dump still stands.

There were a bunch of things that I did not particularly appreciate in this novella:

- Virun gets hated on by Ivar and called ugly, pockmarked and plain, but she actually gets very little page time in which she actually does or says something and although those moments are positive, I felt kind of cheated out of really meeting Olaf's deceased wife

- this was supposed to be about the time Ivar and Thrain met for the first time but that part of the novella actually doesn't start until later, because we get some random (or I guess, character-building) snippets of Ivar's everyday life as an injured, whoring warlord instead. I have no issue with this in general, but truth be told, this novella is 90 pages and still I was missing the red string that connects all of it

- obviously no Tamsin anywhere. Because she's somewhere else and probably 10 years old at this point (or less). which annoys me a lot, tbh

- Olaf is Lyx Robinson's not-so-secret favorite but we once again had no opportunity to even clearly seeing him through Ivar's eyes. I guess he's just a bit of a mystery on purpose, but I wish we got more of his personality through dialogue.

Overall, I felt that this novella really emphasized the very few things about this near-perfect series that I don't enjoy: Tamsin being a lil baby (off page), Olaf being a big question mark and his dead wife Virun being the Damocles-sword of the past who will never not get compared to Tamsin.

Just to be clear - I have no issue with Olaf having a dead ex that he actually loved. In fact, I wish her portrayal had been more layered and more 3-dimensional here (instead of "oh she's hideous but she's a great woman!" wouldn't it have been great for her to have an actual personality and less of a saintly glow around her?). I wish we had seen Olaf and her being actual people instead of models on a postcard, ya know? Because it's clear that Olaf's relationship with Virun is eventually going to be compared to and look pale next to his relationship with Tamsin, and therefore I wish his first love had a big profile.

Seeing Ivar and Thrain meet for the first time was whatever, tbh. Because the main part of their relationship in Book 1 & 2 is close brotherhood/friendship instead of what is going on here and in book 3, I can't help but speculate that their backstory is actually something that wasn't planned, but added in later on. Which isn't terrible, but it doesn't help, because what we are really missing from Thrain and Ivar's development is how they went from Meeting of Wolves intimacy to stark platonic exes. I mean, that's the part that would really interest me, because of the tension, resentment and betrayal.

Seeing Thrain here as a newly-minted hero who still got no respect from his peers at home was heartbreaking and the saddest part of this novella. I feel for babygirl <3

I'm glad I finally gave this a chance ~ because I am a super fan ~. But I will likely never revisit this novella because the addition to the enjoyment I have of the OG series is negligible.

OG review:
TMI

At this point in the series (book 2; we haven't really reached the reverse harem level yet and barely know hero 2 and 3 - which is totally fine, btw) this infodump prequel feels like too much, too soon. I didn't finish it because I want to get to know Ivar and Olaf through Tamsin's eyes before I go get some bonus content with them.

Trumpas apsakymas, apšilimas prieš didžiąją trečiąją serijos dalį - sugrįžimas į priešistorę, kai prasidėjo Dublino vilkų bendrystė. Pagaliau gaunam pasakojimą iš Ivar'o perspektyvos! 4* tik todėl, kad maža, neužteko, noriu dar!

Novella giving the origins of the Lords of Dublin, the men of the Viking a Omegaverse series. Love this series and it was very interesting to see the beginning relationship of the guys: Olaf the Prince, Ivar the bastard brother and Thrain, the young mercenary that catches Ivars eye immediately. Thrain is a lone wolf and Ivar is determined to include him in the pack. Amongst other things 🥵😈 Makes me so excited to see how the series progresses.

Book Review: A Meeting of Wolves by Lyx Robinson
Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5
This review may contain minor spoilers.

This novella is a glimpse at the history of Olaf, Ivar, and Thrain. The three have such a different dynamic in this prequel story. Jealousy, distrust, and (non)communication to name a few. We get to see Olaf and Virun, and the differences between their wedding and that of *spoiler for Taming the Wolves* Thrain and Tamsin. It highlights some reasons why being with a Vanirdottor is important for them.

I wish we could get a whole prequel of Olaf & Virun. Their story is so fascinating and heartbreaking 💔

I read this novella close to a year after finishing the first 3 books in the series, and man... I will never get tired of Lyx Robinson's prose. I also forgot how much I love Ivar and Thrain. 💕 Thrain telling Ivar they'll never be friends is pretty hilarious. It's giving enemies to lovers. 😏🥰 Looks like it's time to re-read Stolen by the Wolves. I'm gonna go do that now.

"You and I will never be friends, Ivar Gofraidson".
Oh Thrain, my poor baby. I hope we get more of your history in book 3, especially your life over the past 10 years with Ivar and Olaf.

Lyx, you beautiful viking woman, this was so good. It was short, it was sweet, it had so much Ivar... a perfect novella. You gain insight into the relationship between the brothers, how important the cursed woman are to them, and what Olaf and Viruns relationship was like. My favorite part was the foreshadowing in this novella, there were so many moments and thoughts that tie into the first 2 books. This novella really enhanced the whole series.

"If he wanted a kingdom, a legacy, a wife and children – he simply reached out and took them. Why could I not do the same? Somehow I could not bring myself to expect those things, to feel entitled to them. I could not really imagine ever obtaining what I most wanted."

me thinks Ivar will have those things. (please god let Ivar be happy)

Ivar, my beloved 💕 I’m so glad we got to read more about him and get a glimpse into his inner thoughts. The book was sadder than I thought it would be. Reading about Olaf and Virun and how much they wanted it all to work and how much they cared for each other was sad, given she’s not with us anymore in the main series. The ending is SPICY - it puts so much perspective into Thrain and Ivar’s relationship

Exquisite

This series is one of the best in 2021, both in omegaverse and RH in general. This novella was an exquisite treat between books two and three, and has only got me more excited to really get to spend some time in Ivar's head next year.

Lyx, you are phenomenal.

I really didn't need to read this, it adds a little to the story it. I like that we finally get to learn more about Ivar and his relationship with Thrain . I will say this book makes the situation with Olaf even weirder and I don't like it even more now.

Interesting to read

It was interesting to read about the dynamic between Olaf and Ivar before Thrain joined them as their brother, and to see Thrain’s initial joint into the pack.

I was happy with the authors treatment of Olafs wife, and how Olaf took to her. I liked seeing their claiming ceremony and the similarities and differences between it and Tam and Thrain’s claiming.

So now I know Olaf is about 40 in the main series and we’ve established Thrain is 27. I know Ivar is somewhere in between, but I’m hoping he’s closer to Thrain’s age with how he tamed him.

*SPOILER*****

I was a little uncomfortable by Thrain only being 17. I get it’s Viking times and Thrain was very capable of dislodging Ivar if he wanted. But, as young and inexperienced as he was, and with being half feral and in a moon craze, I feel he was hardly capable of giving consent, which is a shame because Thrain is so good with consent in the main series. It’s a pillar he leans on and he holds back so much until Tam tells him, during moments of clear headedness, that she wants him. I really applauded the author for her choice to do that. A woman held captive ruled by the moon into a clouded lust to where her body craved even a man she hated (Aedan at the dance at least) so why should it be so easily accepted that a child with no experience in such things be able to consent to sexual couplings when he was so into the moon craze?

I love this series and will continue it, but this one thing runs me wrong.

An awesome backstory on who Thrain Mordsson. His backstory tragic, violent... he was still borderline feral when he got to Dublin. He'd witnessed his father's execution, The Blood Eagle, his face branded, this being something that marked him with an X shaped brand, the brand meaning he was an exile and basically gave him "untouchable" status, a status even below slaves. When the princess finally made it to Dublin, Thrain was essentially her guard. The way they spoke of how Thrain fought made me think of a Berserker.

Having 2 Alphas did make for an interesting fight for power between Ivar and Thrain, Got really spicy when it came to getting Thrain to submit. He still sounded like a teenager, I know he was, but "Why are you so fucking talkative" got me to cackle.

This was great!! I’ll never be able to view Ivar and Thrains relationship as brotherly again haha but I loved it!! I wish it was longer. It would’ve been great to see the full year it took them to become friends as was stated in the second book.

I’d also love to see Virun and Olaf’s relationship. I’m not sure if Virun was described as ugly to make Tamsin more enticing to readers but it was strange/kinda funny to hear that everyone was silenced by her lack of beauty for a solid minute before acknowledging her

Meeting of the Wolves feels like filler, offering a glimpse into Ivar and Odin’s life before Stolen by Wolves. It focuses on Odin’s previous marriage through Ivar’s perspective, providing some background but ultimately falling flat. While it promises to explore the characters’ histories, it doesn’t add any meaningful depth to those we already know and love. The pacing drags, and the emotional weight feels thin, making it seem more like an unnecessary aside rather than a crucial piece of the overarching narrative. It’s a disappointing prequel that left me wanting more substance and relevance.

I love this version of Thrain, the unhinged and brutal boy who's broken. His character was more distinct in this than the first two books lol... the MM is hot too but we don't see any of it yet. I wish we saw this side of Thrain and Ivar in the series, after seeing how great of a fighter Thrain was, I mourn his hand even more, I hope Tamsin feels bad for what she did...

I feel sad for Olaf's dead wife Virun... how much doubt and self hatred she must bear for not only being with a husband who's out of her league but also human... when her husband is fascinated with the myth of omegas...

This was an okay little Novella that gave us a look into how Thrain met Ivar and Olaf and a little background on Thrain.

The POV is Ivar, which was fine. To be honest, he is probably my least favorite of the three, I kinda agree with Olaf's harsher critiques of his brother. I would have preferred the POV be split between him and Olaf so that we could have gotten more insight into his growing relationship with Virun.

A Tasty Viking Treat

Fans of Ms Robinson's Viking Omegaverse books must read this delightful offering. Ivar is wild, but deeply caring character. The story gives wonderful insight into his psyche and his relationship with Olaf. The scenes with Thrain are hot. I highly recommend this book.

Can't wait for the next installment.

This novella was exactly what this series needed to explain the background of the 3 brothers and their dynamic. Robinson is quickly putting her up their with the romance fantasy greats; J. R. Ward, Sherlyn Kenyon, Armentrout, Danielle Jensen, and Raven Kennedy. In my book anyway.

Interesting

I found myself intrigued by Lyx Robinson's Viking series and although it's out of order I decided to read this book first to get a flavour. Needless to say I'm even more intrigued now by these books and just what will happen to the main characters we meet in this short prequel. I feel like I'm going to end up devouring these books sooner rather than later.

Insightful

It was cool to see the way Thrain, Ivar, and Olaf's paths crossed. Ivar soon saw that him and Thrain had a lot in common. He knew all Thrain needed was someone to show them the way. As soon one who isn't typical a big fan of mm even I have to admit the spice between Ivar and Thrain was hot.

It was great to get some insight into the past. Olaf and Ivar's relationship as brothers, and the story of how they met Thrain.

I had to laugh at Thrain's last words. Uh huh. Nice try, kiddo. Good luck with that.
