Idina Moorfield is a new kind of magical with a dark and twisty lineage.

Any other combat engineer in the 82nd Airborne Division would be proud of how far Idina's come, but the visions and voices in her mind are only getting worse.

When it affects her work, Idina gets transferred to a new unit—a unit of misfits with their own problems.

But sometimes, what seems like the worst move ever, can turn out to be the beginning of something great. Who says outcasts can’t be heroes?

First, Medina has to come to terms with all her plans going up in smoke while digging deeper than she ever has into the mystery of the Moorfield family secrets.

Why is she the only one in her family with these strange new powers?

Someone else may also have caught on to her and is keeping watch.

Can she discover who or what is watching her and why everything is happening?

Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.

I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.

There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.

Thank you for checking out my stories!

For all the progress she's made for herself, Idina seems to have five steps back. I can't wait to see how she turns this around.

Wow, from a really good start this series is really going downhill, like going down the drain type of downhill.

I quite liked the first book in the series. The second one was a bit mediocre and lacked development, especially when it came to Idina herself.

This book, well personally I feel it is downright bad. Neither the story nor Idina is really going anywhere. It is just a bunch of whining about this “weird green stuff” that she refuses to embrace, or even trying to get a handle on, and a whole bunch utterly illogical and psychotic behaviour.

I thought we would finally see Idina going somewhere when she experienced more of her “green powers” but no. Instead the author makes her go completely nuts and in an orgy of irrational and utterly stupid behaviour worthy of a bad script for a Hollywood soap opera she goes AWOL.

This is followed by several chapters of psychobabble and counselling which was really boring as far as I am concerned.

Then she via some mysterious officers, and largely thanks to her antics, gets moved from the real military unit she was in, where she had good and likable friends, to some dump with a bunch of losers and administrators. What the f…?

I certainly hope the author has some long, or better yet medium, term plan in there but I really fail to see it right now and as far as this book goes I’m afraid that I pretty much felt it sucked. It was mostly boring and it went in all directions except a good one.

The only reason I’m not giving up on the series is because I still hope it might go somewhere interesting. There are some mysterious characters and events lurking in the shadows that give me some hope of a course correction for the better but then next book better be quite a lot better than this one. If not I’m dropping the series.

Oh, and since I’m on a bit of a whine and rant mode, those book covers? Not a single one of them has much, if anything, to do with the content of the books. It’s really blatantly false marketing.

I am taking a break from this series. It is not holding my attention and I'm not invested yet in the characters and we are 3 books in.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

No, none of those things make an appearance in this story. However, the RHYTHM of this story so closely approximates the rhythm of the opening to that very famous song from the Wizard of Oz that they were the first words that came to mind as I began this review.

Martha and Michael appear to be trying something new with this series, as it is very unlike anything I have read from them before. Once again, this book takes each of the many pieces in play and moves them across and around the board in a way that clearly advances the plot line. At the same time, while some of the foreshadowing is blatant and beyond obvious, the pattern they are weaving is so complex that the reader is left only to wonder where this is headed.

Once again, they also failed to leave us hanging on the tenterhooks of an ugly and painful cliffhanger as they have been wont to do in almost every other book upon which they’ve collaborated. Yes, once again they do rely on their typical gambit of simply ending the book after a leading sentence, but once again, there is no urgency or action hanging from it, only a mild curiosity. I swear, it’s as if they’ve grown a soul and have repented from torturing their readers. I’m sure that’s not the case. In fact, for some reason I feel like making a couple of predictions here. I get the feeling that book 4 will also have no cliffhanger ending, but that the ending to 5 will be so intense that it will make up for all of the missing cliffhangers leading up to it. Further, I think that this will be the case because Book 6 will bring the first story arc to a close. I can’t wait to see if I’m right or wrong.

Back to the book at hand, I remain impressed as ever with their collaborative genius. I mean, really, it is utter genius. This time, this series is all about the character and her growth, rather than the plot or the events which shape the character (cf: Leira Behrens or Cheyenne Summerlin). They spin our lead character through some of the most dramatic circumstances and situations in her life and not once do these draw our focus. Instead, our attention remains pointed at her INTERNAL dynamics, and not once does it feel forced. We are drawn so closely to her inner world that it completely escaped me that she is only 18 years old until that fact resurfaces near the end. Her manners and carriage are so much more mature that it is quite easy to do.

To be honest, I have no idea where they are going with is in spite of the blatant foreshadowing I mentioned above. Truth be told, for a change I just don’t care. They have made this character so engaging and entertaining that they could leave us wandering and lost for 40 years in the desert with no plot at all, as long as they kept that focus on her. So I promise you, you will enjoy this one a lot.

Finally, while there has certainly not been enough time to remedy the issue, I will reiterate here my only negative feedback on this series, and that is the cover art. It’s great, don’t get me wrong, but it 110% FAILS to capture the essence of the story. First, we are talking about an unpretentious, jeans and T-shirt kind of 18-year old, not a female James Bond type in designer outfits. Secondly, she’s been in training not combat. Finally she’s a SNIPER-level shooter with RIFLES, not the showy and oh so stupid two pistols in opposite directions the artist has rendered. This character is about precision and performance not glamour and appearance. Don’t get me wrong, I love the artwork, but the content is just all wrong.

Great Book, great series!

Great book! I loved the characters, the humor and the view inside the army. I like the author's style and I will definitely keep reading this series of books and will no doubt enjoy many more.

A story

Very little action, characters are about as not important as possible and teases about Moorfield. When, if ever, will this get interesting? Why are two good writers writing such a poopy book? Why did I give it five stars when if I wrote this mess, I'd toss it? There must be something , but by is it taking so many words to get there? And the last book, all that about jump school, good grief, a long paragraph would have been enough to cover it.it's

disappointed

Great writing and storyline, however this book went nowhere. It was basically the first half of the next book. I was very disappointed. Do better! It’s not about how many books are in the series, it’s about telling the story.

Never went anywhere.

This just seemed like a slow rolling prelude to something and I don't know what. Other than that it was mostly just weird.

Yet another good book in this series.

So far, every book I've read is a slow revealing of Idina Moorfield.

A maverick to her family.

An inspiration to her Company, despite her little 'problem'.

And an unknowing chess piece to her Battalion Commander, even though that's something he wishes to be kept quiet from her, for now.

You see, MacBain 'knows' who and what Idina really is, and he's determined to oversee her career in his Battalion.

Idina, after having an 'incident', while at a Live Fire range, walks away in a daze, thinking her career is over. She unintentionally goes AWOL, but returns to Base, still in a daze, only to face being arrested.

But she didn't reckon on her Superior Officers knowing just how good a soldier she really is, and who are determined to keep her in the Battalion, however they can.

This involves her asking for the help she needs, to deal with the frightening things that keep happening to her.

Once she serves the time needed, to get her head as straight as it'll ever be, in the Battalion's SMBH program, she's devastated to learn that she's being transferred to HHC, where she ends up in the company of six other soldiers, who all seem to have their own, very individual, problems.

But, despite her move, Idina is determined to keep on Serving as well as she can and, when she's allotted the task of being Major Hines' Driver, she starts to wonder just what is going on, and who is manipulating her.

As one of her Chalk, during her three week Jump course, Hines had been saved on their last Jump, by Idina, but what they experienced was something they both agreed would stay between them both.

So now, to both of their surprise, they are once again working together, and neither of them know why.

This book, like the previous two, really goes in depth, as to Idina's training, and her time in consultancy with a brilliant Therapist, Dr Anita Sullivan L.M.H.P.

It actually fascinated me, to see just what is possible where having a really good therapist is concerned. I just hope there are more like Dr Summer actually out there, and helping people! Lol

But, as there's still plenty of daylight left to me, I'll be going on to Book Four: 'A Fubar Kind Of Day', to see, hopefully, just what MacBain knows about Idina, and what he has planned and, once I'm done, I'll catch you on tne flip side, to let you know, too!

Daniel Codex Metioned

So, Martha mentions a lot of things in her Author Notes - sometimes extra stuff about the story or characters you're currently reading about. Sometimes personal issues like her dogs or medical stuff. And sometimes just random stuff - like a different book series she had a hand in writing - like the Daniel Codes series. She mentioned in her notes that series and intimated that it was not very widely known, which I don't understand. Like it might have been an unsuccessful series. It was actually the first series of hers I read - the first LMBPN books I read. And I loved it. I thought the stories were interesting and the characters were awesome. I thought the books were very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Daniel Codex books. I then started reading everything she wrote, and have found that I absolutely love everything she writes!!!!! Her books are always top notch entertainment. The characters are always so well thought out and presented that it's almost like they are real. I love her stories because they pull me in and take me places - I become immersed in the stories I read and can escape my medical issues. I can meet people in the books that become friends or at the very least, folks I really care about. So, if you're reading this and you like what Martha writes, and by some chance you haven't read the Daniel Codex series - put it on your TBR list!!!

Catches and holds your attention

I wanted to wait until I’d read the whole series to comment but each of the first three books has a large amount of minutiae that doesn’t move the plot along. One the one hand we have Idina Moorfield trying to make it in the Army while still dealing with paranormal abilities she knows nothing about. On the other hand, we have some supernatural entity or challenge that spans time and distance that Idina has to figure out and address. Now, in this third installment, the two major themes of her life seem to be coming together. People in power have plans, or just hopes, that Idina will be someone who makes a critical difference. I keep hoping that Uncle Richard will make an appearance.

It also must be stated that the cover art is out of touch with the story as told. Especially jarring is the purple-pink glow around her hands. It is central to the books that Idina’s powers manifest as a green glow. You’d think the artist could at least get that right!

A compelling mystery that moves a little bit too slowly for me.

A very interesting story with a compelling mystery. Unfortunately the story moves a little bit slowly for me and I am starting not to like the character because she has issues that need to be resolved in the real world she would not be in the army. No spoilers. My other problem with this book is that nobody is talking about what they observed, no spoilers. The story is interesting but I’m not really sold on the main protagonist. She seems a little bit dense at times. Even though I’ve said all this I will go on and read the next book because of the compelling mystery not because of the main character. I want to like her but right now she doesn’t seem the sharpest nail in the barrel. You should give the book a try, after all these issues that bother me may not affect you in the least.

Ah, Spit

I'm not sure why I continue to read this series, but i am. I've mentioned in a review of another of Mr. Anderle's collaborations, but I'll do it again.

Get a Beta reader who knows something about how the Army works. I know this is fiction, but making something routine and normal into a hodgepodge of "stuff" isn't good for readers.

Ok, I'll stop moaning. So Ms. Rich has this unique talent that's driving her crazy. Obviously she needs, and gets, a shrink. Who chills her out. Sort of. Now she's assigned to the SSS and as the driver for the Company Commanding Officer.

The SSS has to be seen (in your mind) to be believed. But you have to read this interesting book to start to understand what this special section is all about.

I recommend you do.

Well, that happened! Things have gotten intense and worrisome in Idina's life - and a bit out of control. It's hard to elaborate without giving out spoilers but digging herself out of the mess she now finds herself in is going to take a lot of work and therapy. I'm loving the direction this story is taking. I'm enjoying the new characters and the ones we've met previously, especially Idina's new doctor.

I'm really enjoying this story and must find out what happens next. (Full disclosure: I listened to this story as a Graphic Audio. What they say is true; it really is a movie in your mind.) (Also, it's amazing how much you can get done when you're paying more attention to a story than your chores.)

Next Please!

Normally I won’t read an incomplete series because when they’re good, I don’t have the patience it takes to wait for the next book.

I happened upon this series in a weak moment never thinking it would turn out to be something I’d want to stick with… well it was/is, and it’s so good - ugh! I’m left with a long frustrating wait ahead of me, as I tap my toe impatiently for the next book!

Greeeat protagonist and a colorful cast of supporting characters all wrapped up in a historical mystery with an evil rampaging villain … damn I love sci-fi/fantasy!

Idina has joined Bravo Squad thinks she settled in only to really screw up.

Idina has been reassigned to Bravo unit at Fort Bragg and is settling in when because of her mistake her teammate is injured. The green stuff comes up again and she heals a massive injury to the man, only to freak out and walk off base. Five hours later when she returns she is called AWOL. The luck is they put her in for help with her issues and she is promised after the Doc signs her off she is to be returned to her unit. Only someone messes with that and she is being reassigned.

Rise Warrior Rise!

"Idina’s heart pounded in her chest as she studied the sketch of that oh-so-familiar family crest she’d never seen before. At least, not within Moorfield Manor or with any connection to her family. The first time she’d seen that image was when she’d stepped into a ceremony room at Fort Leonard Wood and had seen the Corps of Engineers insignia mounted on the wall." - Idina

What? How is this POSSIBLE? The SAME CREST??? Idina is about to tumble down a rabbit hole the likes of which she's never seen...

50 Shades of the Spectrum indeed

Can’t see the trees because of the forest…. That’s typically said the other way around. We see the easily seen details (trees) but not the overall picture (forest). This book had the forest (main character talents) so in your face you forgot to look at the trees (many of the other story characters). It’s like the trees and forest are cut from the same wood just different shades of a spectrum. The autism spectrum.. of which I fall somewhere on it 💙

The series looked like a good idea, and still may be. But I felt let down by this volume. There was one “action sequence” early on, then follow up that could have been trimmed to a few chapters. There was not really any conflict or climactic episode to close the story. Self learning and meeting a new team is reasonable set up, but it felt more like a prequel short story that got bloated into a series book.

Just not going anywhere.

I’ve gotten as far as I am going to go with this series—it’s just stalled. I mean, I’ve learned a lot about the military and all, but it’s starting to get tedious. This book just kind of fizzled without any major conflict other than the “episode” at the very end. The description of the next book sounds like more of the same. I’m a huge Michael and Martha fan, this series isn’t doing it for me, though.

Not much going on.

The series started out good, but this book feels like a filler, where is the rest of it? Its wasn't complete, the character did nothing and we didn't learn anything new. You probably could have condensed it to a few chapters of an actual book. I like the character, but get the story going!

I love this series. I am just throwing this out to the Cosmos: please let Martha and Michael keep writing this series until the number of Idina books equal J.D. Robb's "In Death" series. I truly enjoy the day to day happenings Idina goes through. The new people she meets and their enteractions are so interesting. I can't wait for the next book.

if military based need military facts right

Story is good, compelling reading…but extensive errors about basic military life and operations is distracting. If a book is going to be based on a character serving in current day military basic facts need to be right. Research and have someone who has served assist.

Idina new unit

Idina, with a little help, is finally starting to relax with her new powers. She has also gotten assigned to a new unit that has quite a few quirks. I really enjoy the characters in this series and am looking forward to learning more about Idina and more about the new people in her unit.

Still interesting

I’ve read three of these and don’t have a clue where they are going. Much like being on a bus ride with no idea where the destination is. Well done characters are keeping my interest but frankly so far the three books feel like finger food served before a dinner. Next one needs some substance or I’m afraid I’m done.

Idina marches on

I'm not sure yet if I enjoyed this book as much as I did the last one.....and I don't like the cliffhanger ending of it. I was planning on reading the next book anyway, but I consider this a cheap shot. Hopefully the next one will make some sense of where and why Idina got transferred, which reminds me of the island of misfit toys.

Oh poop! Nothing stays secret for long.

Left behind to get extra help Idina is transferred to another unit. She's to be a driver for the Major. Otherwise she just sits and waits like the other misfits in the unit. Until the day she gets a package which was sent to her new unit address date stamped 4 days before her transfer was even signed.
Great cliffhanger! Thank you.

Interesting times

Idina is still working hard at being the best soldier she can be in her new unit, the celebrated 82nd Airborne while at the same time trying to get a better handle on her unusual abilities. She’s then forced to deal with several unexpected changes in her life and career.
