Lauren Dawes is a USA Today Bestselling Author. She's an urban fantasy/paranormal romance writer and the author of the Half Blood Series and the Dark Trilogy. You won’t find any friendly vampires in between the pages of her books; just blood, teeth and violence.
When she’s not writing, she’s reading or designing book covers. She currently lives in Canberra, Australia with her husband, daughter and cat.
Smoldering hot daemon, smutty mouthed heroine, with an unsolved traumatic murder in my past vibe and a necklace She can never take off, paranormal police force, fated mate… big on originality these books aren’t, but the story is readable and engaging. Kind of like the next thing on Netflix you watch when all the awesome new shows have finished their seasons- you have finished the Witcher season two… now what?
Firstly it took me a while to adjust to the smutty conversations between Cat and her bestie, it seemed forced, like the author decided to cut and paste objectifying comments about men without much conversational context.. imagine walking up to your bestie in a cafe and leading with “omg I just ate the best 9 inches of my life, do you want a coffee” I get it, we are liberated womens in this book and the d is the t but it (pardon the pun) sticks out like a sore thumb and creates a rather discordant counter part to the flow of the story - Cat and Sasha talking about riding their Gym coach hard during the middle of a class session and then all the comparisons about being whipped into a moaning aching heap - there’s not a lot of subtle in the first story Bad vampire at all, and the dynamic doesn’t get better in that regard until maybe book 3 - if you overlook (or don’t) the sex scenes between Cat and Sawyer.. I mean they are not Anita Blake level but they are full of the multiple orgasms trope, 5 hour sex sessions and the I can’t keep my hands off you - oh look a janitors closet, or work desk or toilet.
The actual stories that happen in between all the sex talk, objectifying, sexual tension, sex and more sex are actually fun to read, the author has added some interesting twists into the obvious genre conventions and she managed to hold that steady throughout the books for the most part, linking the different plots well into the overarching plot with Cat nicely.
The mix of different mythological creatures into the story was done well, it added more than just your standard vampire, werewolf and daemon trio, it would have been interesting if this aspect was explored a little more.
I liked the pace of the stories, it wasn’t bogged down in overly cumbersome world building or descriptive passages, the non sexual action was engaging and the story has me wanting to read the next book. (I think there is a next book after bad kitty?)
There are some interesting aspects of Cats character that haven’t been spoken to yet and I am keen to read how they resolve and what they actually mean, so that’s good thing, I am invested in the story and the author does scatter these little breadcrumbs well… it keeps you wondering and guessing about Cats true nature and what is really going on.
The story has good bones, it’s like a decent remake of your favourite 80’s tv series, not original but sparkly and new enough to keep you watching (or reading in this case)

Is a good series, fun characters, interesting stories. A couple things bothered me… 1) the lack of Police procedures, especially collecting evidence and not filing it but just putting things in a desk or pocket, write a Police book then you should do a little research. 2) sex. I’m not a prude, I also know that one character is an incubus, but honestly, sometimes less is more when you constantly have to write sex scenes. When you have sex scenes 3,4,5 times a book it gets repetitive and boring instead of titillating. Now add all the books in the series and eventually it’s… well… skip a few pages and get back to the story. It’s not like they are doing different acts, or experimenting, it’s just the same stipulation, over and over and over. Other than those things it’s a good series. There is not really any world building either , just throwing different supernaturals in here and there. World building would make these books so much better.
Really enjoyed this. In the beginning the snarkyiness was a lil too much. But I kept reading and I was glad I did. I honestly enjoyed this entire series. But I hope it's not over. The last book didn't feel like a series ender. There are still questions to be answered. Cat is supposedly human but paranormal things are drawn to her. There has to be a reason not just because. It's my biggest gripe of the series. Like why? The final book added a whole new character inexplicably drawn or bonded to her. Why? It's these details that separate a good author from a great author. Also if this is how this author ends all her series I probably won't read any more of her work. I quit reading another author who was my favorite over lame endings. I can't invest myself into characters who aren't finished. This ended with and they road off into the sunset sh*t.
Cat and Sawyer make a great team and Ms. Dawes has created an incredible world for them to be solving crimes in. While the series could end here, I can't wait to see if Ms. Dawes writes more of their stories. I have questions. So many questions.
