Trayvon: Ten Years Later

Rate this book
In this powerful essay, the mother of Trayvon Martin shares her grief, reflections, anger, and hope in the wake of a single unforgivable moment that catalyzed the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ten years after the tragic killing of her seventeen-year-old son, Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton has become both the unyielding matriarch of a national conversation and one of the most incredible activators of change in our time. While grappling with the ongoing process of making sense of her grief, anger, and cherished memories, she fights every day for justice.

In this moving essay, Sybrina imparts to this generation and the next the lessons and wisdom she’s gained in the past ten years—about life, love, and loss; about bad faith; about what changes have and have not occurred; and about the power of her own voice in the gathering storm of a profoundly divided country. Above all, Sybrina knows what it takes to keep moving forward.

With a foreword by attorney Ben Crump.

A very short essay in which the mother reflects on the societal impact of her son's murder and changes that have occurred since her son's death. This a very straightforward essay. There is no analysis of events or historical references. These are the thoughts and conclusions of a mother who has had ten years to process the events.

Hard to believe it's been ten years since Travon Martin's murder and ten years since the acquittal of his murderer. Fulton found herself a reluctant activist who professes that
"Sometimes you have to step into roles you did not ask for and that you do not want."

She speaks of horrible truths about our nation that are overt and evident and yet still disputed and a sort of gilded national delusion. We still struggle with the media's victimization of the victim and the fact that coverage is very much racially tinged. We still have "stand your ground laws". We still have a populace that looks aways when confronted with unpleasant facts about our justice system and votes in people who uphold or at a minimum do nothing about the misapplication of laws and justice in America. She laments the number of people who were opportunists and pretended to befriend her to enrich themselves. Since Trayvon's murder she has set up a foundation to help other parents of murdered children deal with the grief and handle the after effects: the media, opportunists, the justice system etc. They also are seeking to change unjust laws like "stand your ground" and the political forces behind them.

The five star rating is more about the honesty and compassion of Sybrina Fulton. How easy it would be to just melt into the fabric of this country and silently drown in the grief and unfairness, her son a lost statistic. But Fulton could not let that happen. We all should remember Trayvon and keep working for a more just society. Trayvon's death will always have meaning. Fulton has made sure of that.

My Soul Hurts

Every Black mother was profoundly wounded by the murder of Trayvon Martin. He represented all of our babies. Ten years later, I am still full of rage and heartbreak over his senseless murder. My heart goes out to Sybrina Fulton. I am in awe of how stoic and graceful she has been through it all. I thank her for sharing her testimony with us. This essay was both touching and powerful. I will continue to challenge my peers to not blow off jury duty. We owe it to his legacy to show up. We will never forget his name. Long live Trayvon!

This was utterly heartbreaking. The injustice of Trayvon's killing, and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, still guts me to this day. Sybrina Fulton putting her grief and pain into action is inspiring and powerful.

A short, fifteen minute read essay of sorts by the mother of Trayvon Martin, who was senselessly murdered as he returned home from a 7-11 in 2012. I think this may be a pre-cursor to the longer book, because this appears like a sample or interview of a wider piece. It did make me want to read the 'proper' book though, so I suppose that's the goal.

This is a good book to read. It's a mother's essay about the tragedy that struck her family when her son was wrongfully killed and the killer was not held responsible for the murder. She talks about actions after the verdict, and what they (the family) are doing for the community who's lives are affected by the same way their life was affected.

A heartbroken mother takes pen to paper to describe the tragedic death of her teenage son. She guides the reader through her ongoing grief and the purposeful fight against injustice in its various forms. Demonstrating a mother's love for her child is beyond forever.

This short essay is well written and covers several key topics: stand your ground laws, media influenced character assassination of victims, learning to discern opportunists, and racism.

Sadly little reform in 10 years

This is a brief accounting of what happened in the 10 years after Trayvon was murdered and his killer acquitted. Sadly in that time, little has changed.

Trayvon: Ten Years Later: A Mother’s Essay

I Picked Up This Book Because: Curious

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: Audible via KindleUnlimited
Dates Read: 2/15/22
Stars: 4 Stars??
Narrator(s): Sybrina Fulton

This is basically an update on Sybrina’s life and the battles she has fought since the murder of her son. A mother’s grief never ends and I personally think it is compounded when there is no justice behind his senseless killing.

I put question marks behind my rating because the thought of rating someone's pain is weird. And this is definitely an expression of her pain. Much needs to change in this country and Ms Fulton is on the front lines.

I can't believe it has been ten years! For these parents, having lost a child and now living with the gross miscarriage of justice...God help them! There were things brought out in court that had absolutely nothing to do with the case whatsoever! I don't care what people say, there is STILL a blatant disregard for Black lives, period! And it still sickens me. I could not read and listen to this without choking up. I'll stop here.

heartbreaking

It has been 10 years Sybrina Fulton has lost her son. In this chilling essay she shares her grief and how Trayvon was not perfect but he was her son. She talks about how she tried to get laws to change but until the racist are out of government laws like the Stand your ground law will stay. This is something we all should listen to. To many kids are loosing their lives to gun violence. What can we do to stop it?

First- I absolutely HATE rating books such as these. How can I put a rating on someone else’s lived experience?

22 pages of heartbreak as a mother and Black woman. I am devastated for her! No words.

A short, yet powerful essay. This essay gives some background information on the process Sabrina went through fighting for justice after her son's demise. This was a great reminder that Black lives STILL matter. May we all continue to learn and grow as a species.

It is impossible to rate a mother's pain and it is impossible to rate a life-changing experience. This essay was inspiring as well as heartbreaking. I have the utmost respect and admiration for Sybrina Fulton for being able to turn her heartbreak, pain, and anger into a force for good.

Well written essay. Sybrina Fulton did a good job narrating her essay. She brings up some good points and examples. Short read that I'll recommend to others.

Disclaimer: My enjoyment of the narrator is based on my listening speed. I only leave 5 stars for books I've listened to or will listen to multiple times. I'll update my review if I listen again.

A good presentation

Too bad that more than 10 years later, we still struggle with the same problems. If anything, it seems to have gotten worse in some cases of general attitude. I hope that one day there will not be any difference in how we perceive another human between skin color, religion, or nationality.

I cannot imagine what this mother went through. I applaud her perseverance to remember her faith and stand strong for those who may experience similar tragedies. Her activism is inspiring for many people. I hope the legislation in our country can be altered to protect those who are most often persecuted without cause.

Wonderfully written!

Trayvon's mother wrote a very thought provoking and heartbreaking account of her loss. This is a very quick read but raised a lot of things, we as a country need to realize and have conversations that lead to actions!

Today I made a post on tumblr with the book cover and three quotes I cherished the most. This was before finished the essay. As I kept reading. I highlighted more quotes, and more quotes. I even went back and slowed down my reading and highlighted more. This essay was so powerful to me, so well written. She pours her emotions in this book, all her perspectives, her journey in this horrible tragic incident that happen with her son. You can feel all that is written. I can see her side because I am a mother. I can see her side because my sister was taken away, and I was not ready. She says, "Sometimes you have to step into roles that you do not want. You can find the strength from within if you are willing to live in your purpose". For her to say this, to be so strong. To let us into her world is everything. I cried reading this essay/listening. I want to hug her. I am angry for her. I want to tell her I am proud of her for writing this essay. It definitely is not an easy thing to do. My gosh her writing is great and captured so much. Trayvon your parents loved you so much. Your mom will have to tell your story in order to tell hers too. You were taken away so soon, It is not fair. May Trayvon Martin rest in peace.

Rest In Power Trayvon!

This was truly a powerful book. I have grieved alongside this beautiful mother since hearing about the loss of her handsome son Trayvon ten years ago.
I can not fathom the strength that it has taken for her to forge forward after all the hell that she and her family have had to endure since her baby was tragically gun down in the street after only wanting to walk to his home in peace!
I can only be in awe of her as she has watched the murderer be set Free, be able to walk away and turn his actions into a freak show that he made worse by making a mockery out of what he did! And watch him not live in fear that karma would not come back to kick him down!!!
This is truly a woman and mother that I'd love to be more like! Because I've watched her Go thru this and been in constant fear of what could happen to my own boys {Um grown men} & cringed as i knew I'd only be filled with plotting for revenge!

Sabrina Fulton I admire the woman that you are and I salute you Sister! Keep being the superwoman that only you can be!

Sincerely,
Another mother of two Young Black Men,

I was glad to read this message of hope, how much Trayvon's murder has galvanized activists to shine light on unnecessary tragedies and on the road ahead to reducing murders motivated by racial bias. I hope, pray, and lay myself on the line to help steer our culture away from its racist beginnings so we can embrace and celebrate our diversity, accepting and atoning for our past transgressions, and transforming our future by treating our collective past as a learning and growing experience, not something to be denied or covered up, let alone perpetuated in the form of continuing embedded, systemic racial inequalities and acts of discrimination both small and numerous and occasionally downright murderous. I wish they did teach critical race theory in grade schools, or at least that they did teach our real history as well as the usual writing and arithmetic, and way too much emphasis on testing, testing, testing.

Thisntols.me nothing

This Book Told me nothing new about this case at all because the new said he was shot over a bag of skittles which I still don't believe because no cop would mistake a bag of skittles for a gun then we were told it was a banana still unbelievable but still a little more believeable than a bag of skittles I was hoping this would be a story of the family coming out and about the case and why the cop maybe thought this kid had a gun because It would be understandable in the area they were at because that area From the news look like it had a lot of gang activity so the cop had every right to be scared did he have the right to shoot a little boy no By he should have done more investigation 1st but on fortunately there are some cops out there who will shoot the mass questions and unfortunately it is the people of color who they go after the most but that could be because of our sorting history

This was very enlightening. What I remember from the Trayvon Martin case was he had skittles, he was in Florida, and he was 17. What I didn’t realize is that he was killed by a citizen not an officer a citizen who wanted to play police. He killed this child and then walked free. Trayvon did not trespass, he did not steal, he didn’t commit a crime. He went to the store to buy skittles and was assaulted by a man who thought he looked suspicious. I couldn’t imagine going to a store and being assaulted I would fight back just like a lot of us would. Listening to Sybrina (Travon’s mother) is heartbreaking as a mother I can’t imagine my child going to the store and never returning. This continues today George Floyd 2020 Tyre Nichols 2023. Enough is enough.
