I 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙝 this book had existed when I first began my foray into witchcraft… many lessons could have been learned the easy way.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 is a practical, hands-on guidebook to upholding the philosophical principles of the green practice and maintaining a strong connection with the earth in any environment. Despite the green witch’s path being a highly individualized solo practice, this book highlights the many opportunities for collaboration. To practice green witchcraft is to engage in continuous conversation with the natural world by responding to your environment with intention, gratitude, and respect.
My favourite concept explored in this book is the idea of 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, whereby the interlocutor acquires the knowledge and skills of the author by engaging with their views and implementing the practitioners suggestions. The author champions that it is this enduring pursuit of information and a welcoming attitude towards change that subsequently molds and refines our practice, uniquely personalizing it. True to her word, the author often directly cites from other works and provides many relevant suggestions for further readings.
It is the author’s focus on building up the reader’s confidence and her emphasis on continual growth and persistence in the face of failure that lends a nurturing, supportive tone to the book. This is reflected in the flexible and inclusive definitions provided for common terminologies used within the world of witchcraft, which are accurate and unambiguous, but still leave lots of room for personal interpretation.
Typical to most books on this subject, the author does include correspondence briefs for different natural elements (e.i. flowers, trees, stones, etc.). While this section of the book is short and concise, it is padded with enough practical information and useful tips on foraging, cultivating, and handling the various raw materials that it doesn’t feel terribly superficial.
My only qualm with this book, albeit very minor, concerns the ease of navigation as the vague chapter titles make it difficult to relocate certain information and specific concepts to refer back to it. This book could have benefited from an index or an optimized table of contents that more accurately and unambiguously reflects the structure of the book. Although, this can easily be solved with some sticky notes and it doesn’t take enough away from the reading experience for it to be a real hindrance.
The Green Witchcraft Bible by Sheila Paltrow is everything the 21st century witch needs to navigate the constraints and influences of our modern world.
Wow, so much of this is almost word for word The Green Witch, by Arin Murphy-Hiscock. I finally re-downloaded The Green Witch to compare after feeling deja vu while reading part of this one, and chapters match up.
