Moira Madhwa is the typical young, beautiful and successful urban woman until the day she goes missing. Her friends start looking for her, but quickly realize nothing is as it seems. Moira had kept devastating secrets—secrets that could wreck their lives if revealed. As days roll by, one by one, skeletons tumble out of closets, and each of Moira’s friends’ looks guilty. But did one among them hate her enough to do the worst?
A nail-biting, psychological suspense thriller, Dead to Them weaves a web of deception, lies, and paranoia in the city of Mumbai, where every face hides a dark story and uncovering it can lead to disastrous consequences.
SMITA BHATTACHARYA writes atmospheric cosy, and psychological mystery fiction. Strong female protagonists and twisty whodunnits are her forte. Her psychological thriller novel—Dead to Them—was amongst the top Crime, Thriller & Mystery books of Amazon India in 2022. It has been optioned for a movie. She has also authored a popular amateur detective series—the Darya Nandkarni Misadventure Series. The first of the series—Kiss of Salt—is in talks to be optioned for a movie.
Smita lives in Mumbai but has solo travelled to over 45 countries. Her stories are heavily inspired by her travels and by those she meets. She has worked in a vineyard, a newsroom, a school, a library, a bank, an advisory firm, and a technology start-up.
This book is about a secretive lady vanishing under bizarre events. It includes an absorbing story causing one to question every personality entangled in this baffling feat. The solidity of this fiction lies in the attribute that the characters are as twisty as they can get & they play out as individuals to carry the narrative forward instead of being warped by its surroundings. I was caught directly from the start & kept thinking about what might be transpiring. I adored the language use & the natural exchanges that supported the graphic imagery.
The book cover is stunning & the title gives justice to the story. Its medley, no doubt, tells the readers that they are in for a nail-biter read. My only complaint to the writer is that she finished it too quickly after the thrilling build-up. The epilogue attempted to salvage the situation, but it didn't help. Nevertheless, the twisty end was entirely out of the blue.
I would absolutely suggest this book to everyone to relish good suspense with a nice cup of hot chocolate beside them. The readers are undoubtedly in for a treat!
Dead To Them by Smita Bhattacharya is a thriller with lots of hidden past that finds its way to come in the front with the search of Moira.
The author has carefully drafted the plot and created an engaging storyline. I didn't see that twist coming at the end. The way it completely changed the storyline was quite great to see. No one would have guessed that tables would turn like that. Although the climax was great, the author didn’t tie the loose ends suitably. Like what happened with Himanshu and his violent behavior, and what about Kavya and her research?
The narration is pretty good, and each characters’ perspectives and thoughts were presented in the book. It helped to see the story from both sides and understand the characters’ behaviors. The story touched upon sexual assault and physical violence for a brief and misogyny for a fair part of it because no corporate story can be complete without that.
Basically this story is about the mysterious disappearance of a woman.
The plot is engaging making it impossible for anyone to guess who's responsible and the purpose of such an act.
Moira disappears one day all of a sudden without any notice whatsoever. Her colleagues and friends (try to link possibilities to find a clue yet some of them are reluctant to do so.
Here lies the strength of the plot. Every other character mentioned in the story seems to be related to the disappearance yet none of them could have been singled out as the main culprit.
During the hunt of clues, so many dirty secrets did spill out in relation to the other characters. Yet the good part was the end. The suspense kept well and intact till the end. However, the story seemed to be too dragging in between.
Some parts related to a few characters were added which seemed irrelevant to the plot. The character who faced childhood sexual assault seemed to be a bit distant related to the issue.
Misha took the major portion of the story being so uninteresting, boring and bitchy throughout. And yes, the plot as such was not new as it reminded me of a famous Hollywood movie series.
Overall, the writing style is good and holds the interest of the reader till the end.
A thriller with Moira Madhwa,as the protagonist, working in an MNC and she is suddenly missing. All her colleagues are suspected of her missing. . The author has made the plot with ease and great importance to every character. . Only the editing ended a bit more work. Otherwise it was overall a great thriller to read.❤

‘Dead To Them’ by Smita Bhattacharya is a psychological thriller with a female lead protagonist, Moira Madhwa. Moira, a working professional at a reputed company suddenly goes missing out of the blue. Think of it as someone who works at your office is absent for a very long time. Someone you had spoken to even yesterday and the next day she can’t be found anywhere. No messages, no calls nor any application of her absence. This situation would be really weird, isn’t it? It would make you doubt that there’s something more to it than what meets the eye.
All her friends along with her colleagues were being suspected behind her gone missing. All the characters are shown to be prime suspects because all of them are hiding some secrets of their own. Moira herself had secrets of her own to hide.
Smita Bhattacharya has wrapped up everything perfectly. Right from the beginning, the plotline has a sense of mystery, there are characters whose actions can be doubted on, there are situations which would rise suspicion. All in all, Smita did a brilliant job in keeping the thrilling factor alive throughout the story.
The sub-plots are weaved really well. They form a connection to the main plotline and also has the ability to confuse readers where we can end up doubting the wrong person. There are several twists and turns that makes the story even more interesting. Just when I thought that I have figured it out, Smita would throw in another twist. Reading this book was similar to that of being on a rollercoaster ride.
There were a few grammatical errors here and there but nothing that can’t be fixed with a quick round of editing. In the beginning, Moira’s friends and colleagues are seen to be pretty much nonchalant about her gone missing so that was something which I found to be a bit unreal because if I by any chance go missing, my friends, colleagues and my family members are going to be really concerned about the matter and not sit back and wait for me to come back (I am sure?). Also, I felt that the cover could have been a bit better; something related to the plot or the characters. Other than this I really loved the book and the way Smita executed the story.
FINAL THOUGHTS
‘Dead To Them’ by Smita Bhattacharya lives up to its genre as a psychological thriller and didn’t disappoint me.
Recommended to readers who love thrillers and doesn’t get upset when the story turns gory.

'Dead To Them' is such an amazing read. While reading the book I felt that it was too boring, since it was being dragged in the beginning but later the book turned out to be a masterpiece. The twists and turns shook me and the mystery surrounding the characters was very well narrated.
Moira Madhwa was missing since last 2 days. Her boss instructed her colleagues to look out for her and on the other hand her friends were tensed and were busy thinking about her whereabouts. Everyone was suspecting that either Moira was dead or she was murdered by someone. Friends suspected each other and relationships started breaking. But as the story progressed a lot of secrets divulged out that shook everyone eventually. Where was Moira? Was she really dead? Will they be able to find her?
Read the book to get your answers.
Dead To Them is a beautiful psychological thriller.I don't wish to divulge out the secrets and the mystery, since it'll work as spoilers but the storyline is unpredictable and kept me at the edge. The book for me was unputdownable after reading the half story. Beginning was dull for me. The language used by the author is easy and understandable. The narration is smooth. Sometimes the book was fast paced but at times it was dragging. I like how the author separated the chapters, explaining stories from different point of views of the characters. Also I loved the characters, they were perfectly blended in the story and it was amazing to read about all of theirs connection to Moira.
Overall it is an amazing book. Definitely Recommended!
*takes a deep breath* (full in Janice style) Ohhhhh Myyyy Gawdddd!!! Move over stories with sub plots cause this story's sub plots have subplots and they are all amazing... Let's start from the beginning, I am someone who believes that it's humanly not possible to know anyone. Like you can know someone all your life but there will still be things that you never knew about them and chances are there you will die without knowing them too. Poor you!!! Me? I know it all, cause I read the book. Duh! So imagine your friend goes missing, not for real missing like hypothetically missing and you need to doon your Holmes hat and find that poor, lost darling. But as you along with other friends and family search for your friend you find out that it's not your friend who is missing. As in things come to light, secret things, never said before. Betrayal comes to light and somehow everything changes right before your eyes. So my advice is, dear peps run along and get your copy of this gem cause I wanna talk more and if I do I will end uo giving spoilers which I so don't wanna. Run along lovelies....
Dead To Them by Smita Bhattacharya is one of those nail-biting thrillers which keep one hooked till the very end.
I really loved the fusion of human psychology, fear and suspense that was brought out in this mind boggling story.
It had the right amount of tension and hysteria built from the very start.
The characters were relatable and their state of mind was deftly explained.
I felt like I was behind the whole scene, seeing the mystery and suspense unfold in front of my eyes and slowly having the thrill climb up!
Also, the end was the 'it' for me which tied every loose end and turned the tables for everyone.
Its Gripping and totally unstoppable once you start it, which says a lot about the pace, the narrative and the plot. Ms. Bhattacharya here has put her best foot forward by 'weaving a web of deception, lies and paranoia' with the most appropriate pace and combined narratives.
✨I would like to congratulate the author for writing such a brilliant book! Thankyou for the review copy!

For me it's a 4/5
I want to thanks the author for giving me a chance to review this book .
The story of the book based on missing of a young woman named Moira Madhwa. She was missing and the voyage of discovery her fetches so many unthinkable veracities. Everybody waits for an employee who hasn't been in contact for more than a week. Now a lot of riddles got discovered after the incident, that was so potent and overwhelming that it could end affiliations and lives. Where and why did she go? What would happen to her? Will she come back is the core of the tale? I don't want to divulge the story here, cause when it comes to mystery thriller we should let the reader experience their own. Language is good and narration could be better. I read around 1oo pages and a little bit disappointed that it's going slow. There was a lack of flow, but after that, I find a little bit interesting on this book. Maybe initial few things can be skipped i.e. like over descriptive from my point of view.
"I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review."
"Like a puppeteer I control lives; no one controls me." - Smita Bhattacharya, Dead To Them
Dead To Them by Smita Bhattacharya is a suspense thriller—the story of Moira Madhwa who suddenly disappears. Now is it like a year ago, when she disappeared because of a breakdown or has she gone for good this time? And if she has, then what happened to her? Did she just fall off a cliff or did someone do something to her—something so bad that there is no coming back?
As the secrets are unveiled, things about Moira that no one could ever have guessed come to life. Friends go against friends, soulmates against each other. No one knows what is right and what is wrong. Until the truth comes out. Was the truth what they expected to find? Was it something that they could have avoided in the start, if only all of them had been true to them? Or were the secrets Moira hid too much for all of them to even bear?
Dead To Them is a beautiful psychological thriller. The title, the cover, the blurb and the beginning—everything about the book will enchant you and pull you deeper and deeper. Or well, it did so with me. (*winks*) As the story progresses, we find more and more about each character. The characters are developed beautifully as well. You can actually tell what's going on. Except that you really can't. You know how these suspense novels work, right? They make you go crazy thinking what the hell is going on. And you end up going crazy until you know exactly what it is. And that is what happened with me while I read this book.
The novel was amazingly written and the writing style was rather smooth. The pace, however, was a little up and down. I mean, it kept me on my toes half the time but the other half was a bit...meh. Overall, it was a page-turner.
I also particularly loved the ending. The epilogue literally took my breath away! Bhattacharya has wrapped up the whole book in a rather amazing way and I wouldn't be surprised if the book ends up being your next favorite. The twists and turns that I encountered while reading it twisted and turned the insides of my brain as well, because I was really dying to read more and more of it!
To sum it up, it was a rather fun read and if you're into thriller, then I would definitely recommend it to you!
(Kudos to the author for writing a book like this!)
You wake up one fine morning only to learn that your best friend, the very person who is/was pivotal to your existence, the one to whom you disclosed every hidden secret and who is party to all of your darkest desires and fantasies, has disappeared into thin air. Yes. You heard me right. It seems she/he has disappeared into thin air and all trails lead to dead ends, which in turn points out that such a person does not exist. What would you do? Would you go on sniffing up trails in vain? Or, will the person be dead to you?
Firstly, I would like to thank the author for providing me with an opportunity to read and review this mind-boggling book. About 6/7 pages in, I was hooked to it and this went on till I reached page 268. Well, this is certainly not your average whodunnit.
This tightly packed psychotic thriller succeeds in presenting a well chalked out story of friendship, love, betrayal, deception where everyone is different than what merely meets the eye. The characters are equally well drawn, sometimes vibrant and highlighted by a fiery streak, while they attempt to stash away their secrets and keep them well concealed. The author has built them up with such care and detail that all of them appear to contribute heavily in the weaving of this intricate tale. The narrative, yielding the power to draw you in and turn you into a confidant, leads you on to cul-de-sacs and all the while you are left guessing. What amused me to some extent was the partly humorous partly downcast tone adopted by the author to relate the events. Halfway through the book, you might start finding it a bit predictable, but there lies the fun and the final events turn out to be something pretty far removed from all that you have been building up. Although the cover page, with the picture of an ominous gravestone, appears to mislead you in all of your assumptions, the title seems to hint at an unnatural turn of events.
Dead To Them dwells a lot on the fact that loneliness and inhibitions might compel you to strike up a camaraderie with unlikely people and how they might be playing on your fears and insecurities, while it also treats you to the visuals of a rain-soaked Mumbai. The last line, in all its tongue-in-cheek glory, succeeds in sending shivers down your spine.
Thank you Smita for the review copy! When I first saw the cover and title this book totally intrigued me!! I’m happy to say they were not at all misleading!
Synopsis: The book starts with someone trying to get in touch with Moira. She has disappeared and her boss calls her other colleagues to ask around. This then escalates to her friends and so begins the search. Along the way we are introduced to each character who may know what happened.
Review: Firstly I’d like to congratulate the author on creating a completely gripping and unputdownable story!
I love how each character builds as the story progresses. The story goes through multiple twists and turns revealing bits and pieces of the other players in this drama till a picture forms in your head of each one and how they may be involved in the disappearance.
The story throws light on all the intertwined relationships and the littlest things that strain them. The suspicion moved from one person to another as the darkness in each character is revealed in a slightly Agatha Christie-esque manner! This is beautifully done without getting obvious or confusing.
Misha’s agitation, Himanshu’s temper, Piyush’s desperation and feigned indifference, Avni’s doubts, Kartik’s moodiness and Kavya’s confusion as to why no one is trying harder all culminate in an ending that is totally surprising!
The way Moira ensures she plants the seed of doubt in each persons mind and makes them all suspect each other is perfect! A psychological thriller to the very end this book has become one of my recent favourites!
I would totally recommend this book to any who like a good mystery!!

Dead To Them by Smita Bhattacharya is an suspense thriller, story is so intriguing enough to make you glued in one place. The plot is an usual finding out an missing person but the way author portrayed it makes thrilling.
What if your best friend leaves you one day without any info? How do you find her? What if the search reveals the dark secret of each friends? Will you continue? A friendly jovial person with bag of mysteries. Find out the dark secrets and reason behind her disappearing.
Title, Dead To Them and Cover itself a intresting one & various question rising, author continued his suspension in each chapter too. Narration was fantastic with simple vocabularies and lucid flow.
Overall, Dead To Them is a thrilling, intriguing, a revelation of dark sides, fakeness and more suspense opener where each knot opened to found another one.
Moira Wadhwa, Senior Consultant at Brevity, disappears without a trace. Everybody around her - her friends, colleagues, her boss - seems to have an equal hand in her disappearance. But speculations run rife that Himanshu, the hot-headed boss, might be the one truly responsible. But there's more to what meets the eye.
The end was refreshing albeit predictable. A nice quick read this was.
An unusual thriller fiction which would keep you guessing from the beginning till the end. It all begins with the disappearance of the protagonist Moira who was close with Misha and Avni.
When they try to unearth the reasons behind her disappearance, they stumble upon some bizarre truth which couldn't be taken by them as it is. Moira who is a happy go girl otherwise was friendly with all including other characters like Piyush, Kartik, Ashish among others.
Though she was suffering from some kind of depression and had taken medication, she did not leave any note when she disappears.
Was there a conspiracy behind her sudden disappearance? If yes, who and why did they do? Was she held for ransom?
Strangely her boss, Himanshu did not press for police charges. He felt uncomfortable when he was compelled to register one. Moira on the other hand before her disappearance receives a threatening letter.
Who was it from?
There were few other incidents that happens post this which would make you to complete this beautiful novel in one go.
Kudos to the author who has stitched the events together in a well organised way. Though initially I was confused with the presence of numerous characters, as and when I started giving more concentration to it, I could able to connect the dots easily. I can very well say that this novel can even have a sequel :-)
'Never judge a book by it's cover' that's a factual pharse. But never arrive at conclusions is what I could simplify when(much precisely while) I read this book.

Moira, was the lass protogonist of this story who topped in her performance in her organization Brevity. Story begins to flow in finding her that their was a eerie behind her second time missing.
Himanshu, kavya, Karthik were Moira's colleagues at brevity who has vague idea about her disappearance to work.
On the other hand, Misha, Piyush, Avni were Moira's close circles who worried what happened with her missing this time without any trace to interpret.
Moria was not the same beaming, hilarious partner in crime, outspoken women as she was when they met with her friends or even with colleagues. What troubles her inside.
So the sequence of plot were in way to discover the clues to find her. What happened with her? Is she alive? Or Is she dead?

This was an awe - Inspiring work of the author I should say. I find it much messy with the sequence but it still challenged me to arrive at conclusions. Those nailbitting & breathtaking subplots were stupendous. Title is justified and the author deserves the biggest applause. Her work deserves my 5⭐

📍Highly to everyone specially thriller lovers. Just go for the chill game to kick your excitement nervous.
This brilliant brilliant brilliant thriller is one that will stay with me for long.
One to keep you hooked and intrigued and that forces you to wreck your mind with every chapter.
The author weaves a tale of deception, a crime of passion in an around a group of friends/colleagues centering the disappearance of Moira.
Now, trust me when I tell you this I am a sucker for TV series like Criminal Minds, CSI, SVU etc but this book was way too unpredictable even for me. I kept on guessing and guessing but at last I gave up.
The climax blew my mind.Yasss.
The near to perfect narration of the writer is icing on the cake. The characters are brilliantly crafted with sufficient amount of back story.
Although I don't think the parts with the Brevity projects Maxa and all that stuff must have been a bit less.(I kind of skipped some parts)
Also, the cover is not particularly attractive enough. I would have prefered something abstract or else minimalistic. But that's not upon the author, right?
A treat for thriller/mystery lovers and the kind of book you cannot put down without finishing.
Dead to them (4/5) . Dead to them by Smita Bhattacharya is a suspense , psychology thriller. A well written and page turner. . When I saw cover I was quiet sure that this book will be a suspense or thriller. It is quite different than other books yet confusing I'm glad that book is more than just cover. . The story starts in MNC when boss calls an employee who doesn't in office or not in contact more than few weeks. Colleague think she might have gone for some projects other think she is on vacation. . As a story moves ahead we get to know tge details Depth of each character. When we cross some chapter we get to Know this is not simple as we see. . The characters are well developed and described and every character is hiding something in their mind and it is impossible to predict the end. After so many twist so many page turner I can able to decode. . The plot is great, fast paced, with full of suspense , thriller. The cover mislead you in different directions. But that's okay when book is damn good. . Overall great suspense thriller. Will definitely recommend.

"If a tree falls in a forest & no-one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
This quite is justified upto a certain extent. Things aren't quite always what they seem to be. It isn't necessarily true, whatever we perceive. The story revolves around the sudden dissappearance of Moira Madhwa, a young, beautiful & successful urban woman. She works in a MNC company. All goes well until the days she dissappeared without any notice. Her friends, colleagues & boss start looking for her, but quickly realize nothing is as it seems. She had many dark secrets, one that is intricately & mysteriously connected to many things. Where did she dissappear to? What happened to her? Grab the book to find out more about it.
Language is simple, smooth & subtle. It has a good flow to it. The pace is also good. The book may seem monotonous at some ends, especially at the beginning. However, it catches it's own pace later. Characterisation has been done effectively. The plot & story has lots of twists & turns. The ending & climax has been justified appropriately. A good suspense thriller mystery novel to read!

A fantastic psychological thriller, so full of suspense, surprises and mysteries. I couldn't be more drowned in any book. No book can be more grasping than this one. It's a very perfectly weaved storyline, narrated in as best way as possible.

As she goes missing, people around her interact with each other, sharing information, that instead reveals a whole lot of secrets that are pretty shocking for everyone. Slowly more and more things start to come over the surface. And finally... No I won't give off any blooper.
Get a copy of the book. And give it a read. It's mind blowing. Each situation is so well created. Characters are well built. Storyline is very strong. A great read.

While she is missing, everyone is searching for her in which lots of dark secrets are revolved. Now, what is going to be the consequence of this? The author has created the suspense from the very beginning and has taken it to the last page with lots of twists and turn that no one would have seen coming while reading. The language and the narration style is lucid and engaging. Talking about the title of this book, the title is intriguing. Reading the title, I picked this book up.
I read the book during the times when I was going through a reader’s block. It took me an entire month to read this book and I am thankful that this was the book I had picked to read. Had it been another book, I doubt I would have been able to complete it. The book kept me guessing the story behind everything. Every time I doubted some character to be the culprit, everyone else seemed equally guilty. There was a time when I didn’t want to know whether Moira was dead or alive, I just wanted to know why everyone is the way they are.
The story progresses from different perpectives giving us insight into each character. Every character is thus well developed. Backstory is properly written and helps understand the plot a little better.
Initially the narration is little slow and gains pace as the plot progreeses but still could have been a little more tightly gripped. At some places, narration is bit scattered.
The last few chapters are very intriguing and I could stop reading it. With the amount of thrillers I have read and watched, I could to some extent predict the climax. However, in this case, it is really shocking and not something I predicted.
