After defeating a Fae fanatic set on closing the portal between earth and the magic realm, things are looking up for Sophie Feegle. She can finally relax, drink whiskey at her favorite ogre pub, and get back to the autopsy assistant job she loves. Maybe she’ll even go on a romantic date with a certain sexy fox shifter.
Yeah, right. Things never seem to work out quite the way Sophie wants.
When Sophie recognizes the body on her autopsy table from a dream, her world is shaken again. As more bodies end up in the morgue, Sophie realizes a serial killer is hunting San Francisco’s Mythicals. But why? And why does Sophie see the victims in her dreams?
Hot on the trail of the killer, Sophie and her crew encounter Mythicals with strange powers. But as they wade through these dangerous waters, the question becomes: are Sophie and her friends the hunters, or are they the ones being hunted?
Welcome back to Sophie’s San Francisco, where being in a serial killer’s sights may be new but being odd is still the norm.
Gwen DeMarco is an avid reader, wine & coffee drinker, gardener and a lover of all things nerdy. Gwen loves to write paranormal romance novels with a focus on the weird and wonderful. She loves to write a good snarky heroine and a grumpy male lead. Sophie and the Odd Ones is her first foray into the world of shifters, fae, ogres and vampires.
Gwen is happily married to her high school sweetheart and has two teenage children. She can often be found with her nose in a book and a glass of wine or mug of coffee in her hand.
4.75 stars! Knocked it down slightly because right after the heroine is super smart, she kinda gets a little dumb. It didn't go terribly, but it made me roll my eyes. One partial eyeroll = -.25 stars.
So happy to report that this book is holding up to the promise of the first. We get found family, a great love interest (with just enough time with them), and a fun mystery.
I really hope this series holds up because this is fun... and I decided to start buying the audiobooks. Sadly, the author doesn't have them at the library, which is too bad since they aren't exclusive to Amazon and why else wouldn't you have them at the library!?
The heroine gets frisky with her love interest... but this is lighter on the explicit sexy times. Not fade to black, but not a lot of description. I don't mind cause I love these two together. He calls her "Hellraiser" and she calls him "Dickhead".
The plot and ideas are very good but holy Toledo, the conversations between the primary characters are so tedious I couldn’t keep reading. Speaking at high school girl level with potty mouth isn’t “snarky”, it’s annoying and childish. Snarky is extremely clever and intelligent comebacks.
I really enjoyed book 1, a perfectly good urban fantasy/crime story. This was a bit ruined for me with the many teenage-romance, not so erotic sex scenes. This is just not interesting and so not necessary. I hope book 3 will be more like book 1 again.
Sophie and the Odd Ones are back and getting into the routine of interpreting Sophie's visions, as well as working with the police to solve them.
Sophie and Mac have gotten closer as well- turning their budding romance into a real and stable relationship, but Mac's protectiveness will be put to the test right away as Sophie recognizes a body in the morgue and seems to know how he died before even touching him.
This is due to the fact that she saw 'herself' killing him in a dream the night before, and when she touches him she finds that the killer is wearing her face. Is this some kind of new magic or are the fates messing with her visions?
Beyond the dead man lumberjack sitting on the slab, Sophie finds herself embroiled in trouble with the largest werewolf pack in San Francisco. A few shifter related deaths have crossed her path as well as the Alpha (who is a major dbag) getting into her business and making things difficult for her...mostly due to the fact that he can't stand that she's human.
Are all these cases connected? Can Sophie and her friends solve these crimes before the killer or the werewolves make an even bigger mess of her life?
I waited for this book for a long time (or what felt like a long time with so many ku authors releasing books every quarter). This book delved deeper into the world of Mythicals in San Fran. I certainly enjoyed reading it and ended on a note that certainly has me curious about the next book (not a cliff hanger just an idea getting introduced).
It felt like this book kind of ties into some of the things that happened in book 1 and maybe there is still an underlying conspiracy.
Didn't really care for her relationship with "detective dickhead" as she calls him.
Loved the idea of most shifters not following the strict alpha beta idea and having more of a family structure.
Enjoyed the book, just wish the "odd ones" were featured more then just a note here and there.
Chunky, wordy, a lot of tell instead of show, missing words, missing punctuation, unfinished sentences (fragments) that picked up as a new sentence.
This one wasn't nearly as fun as book 1. I'll continue reading for book 3, but probably won't continue the series after that if the writing keeps going the same way.
I had to force myself to finish the book over a period of 2 entire days and nights, when usually I can read several books a day.
The writing in this one felt like a different author. It felt like someone cleaned up the work, making it tighter yet not as "fun".
Onto the story: towards the end, it feels like the author forgot plot points, tried to refresh plot points from book one as a "new idea", and couldn't remember what they'd written in book 1. The "twist" would have been more believable if the author had used the "clues" to trigger memories and ideas. The other twist makes everything go downhill and feels super forced to set up a "mystery" about Sophie's origins. Nevermind we already *have* that intrigue, now there's more? It just felt - off. Forced.
Would have been 3 stars, because I did finish the book, but the typos, hanging ideas, sentence fragments, and missing punctuation got to me in the end.
The stuff I loved most about the first book (the morgue and the odd ones, burg and his bar) were kind of backgrounded here, which is a bit disappointing. Sophie's romance with Mac felt very generic (which I don't think I felt about the first book?), and this one got more into the higher-level politics of the world rather than staying grounded in Sophie's day-to-day. I guess I just didn't find it had that spark and charm that had me riveted to the first book and clamoring for the sequel. But still, an enjoyable enough read.
For a woman who can see how a person died this book was sooo boring!! I couldn't understand why Sophie was so determined to go after Snowhite. She was so dumb. Gewn DeMarco could have done so much with this book and she dropped the ball.
3 1/2 stars. I still liked this one, but it didn't do a lot more worldbuilding, and I'm still not in love with Detective Dickhead. I was super worried at the start that it was going to go down the 'she has these visions because she's the murderer and now we have to clear her name' path, and was so relieved when it didn't because that would have been too stupid for words.
As is, I'm not actually sure what path it did go down. We have a bad guy dead at the end, who presumably had something to do with one of her visions, but it's never made explicit. I can't think of anything in particular I'm reading on to find out about at this stage, but I will keep reading because the series is still ok for me at this point.
During an autopsy Sophie collapses and Mac helps her. She's had another dream of a victim. If a vampire is guilty she questions who handles his or her punishment and it's the Conclave or the Domus.
The Chief of Police shows up and wants to see her in action, basically to see if she's real or not. The question of whether or not her visions can be considered evidence is settled.
Her reports are expected weekly which gives you a good idea of how important her work has become. Birdie, meanwhile, is beginning to learn about just what Sophie is involved with.
Alphonse turns out to be troublesome and Miss Zhao reveals just what her abilities are. This leads to something being set in place to protect her. Snow White is also in the book and here is where there is one problem.
Mac is trying to protect Sophie and she stays somewhere else where she's taken to work and taken from work back to where she is staying.
Here's the problem. If Snow White or anyone else is wanting to find out where she has gone and they know where she works, which seems reasonable, then all then have to do is take their car to a stake-out position then follow the car she is in when she leaves work at the end of her shift.
Here's my favorite people in this series.
Sophie (of course) Birdie Burg Miss Zhao.
Alphonse causes major trouble and there's a major reveal about Snow White.
I really like these stories and the people in them. I'm reading each book in the series, I consider them that good.
This book picks up right where book 1 left off. Sophie realizes that the dead body on her autopsy table is a man she had a dream about the night before. A man that, in her dreams, was killed by someone who looks exactly like her. They decide to have her recount all these strange dreams and believe she is getting visions of a serial killer they name Snow White. Snow White is seemingly a vigilante who only murders other murderers. Waking from a dream vision, she attempts to chase down Snow White to prevent a murder, but only manages to catch the attention of a human-hating Alpha wolf. After being threatened to quit the morgue and having her house broken into, Sophie is put in protective custody with Irish Wolfhounds until this can be solved. There were many twists and turns in this book! Some of the mysteries were easily solved, but you didn't see the why coming! And some were not the answers you expected! We learn a lot more about Snow White, but I am again left with so many more questions I am dying to know the answer to! The Odd Ones are really there for Sophie in this book and now Burg is part of the group! I love how even Amira is ready to help. And the new friends she makes are wonderful as well! And Mac is such a great guy and things definitely get slightly spicy for the 2 of them! And I can't wait to find out what the deal with Snoe White is and why Sophie gets these visions/dreams! I will be listening to the next book shortly!
Sophie’s life is good at the moment, she’s loving her job and new friends, is getting closer to Mac and has some time to relax without worrying about money for food and rent. But it’s not going to last. When starting an autopsy, Sophie realizes the victim is someone whose death she dreamt about. Then another body that she dreamt about arrives. Something strange is going on. While trying to figure it out, Sophie interrupts an attempt to murder a werewolf, she’s not successful but being found with the bleeding body by the alpha, Alphonso doesn’t look good. Alphonso is sure she’s the killer and won’t believe what anyone says. After finding out someone has been in her apartment, Sophie takes refuge in the home of Irish Wolfhound shifters. They are great. There is a lot of action, some mystery, surprises and suspense. The relationship between Sophie and Mac is growing and the interactions between the two of them can be hilarious. Actually, a lot is happening in this book but it’s melded together to make a great story. There are so many things that could happen now, all types of adventures could happen. There is a mystery to be solved, and the romance to grow. Happily on to the next book.
This book picks up immediately after the cliffhanger in the epilogue of book one, and is not a standalone!
It has become apparent to Sophie Feegle, that some of the dreams she has, are actually more visions. This sets her and Mac, the attractive fox shifter police detective, on a hunt for the perpetrator. Then there are the issues she is having with the local alpha wolf. Sophie’s life only gets more interesting!
There are so many things happening in this book. Sophie learns a lot more about the world she was introduced to, and several fun new characters are introduced. There is some romantic advancements in her relationship with Mac, and some intriguing mysteries to solve. A few new questions arise, and this reader at least is hoping the next book will be out soon to answer them!
Another enjoyable read featuring Sophie and the Odd Ones, recommended for urban fantasy and paranormal mystery fans.
Well, Sophie does enjoy working at the morgue, but I don’t think it was her “dream job”. She does fit in with the crew, who have dubbed themselves, The Odd Ones. And she has found her niche, reading the dead and reconstructing their last moments.
But the side hustle, of dreaming about a serial killer, who takes out serial killers? Not so much. Especially, since it seems “Snow White” is now in San Francisco. Uuuuh boy.
Does it help when Mac starts backtracking the dreams, they find out Snow is a vigilante, and that she has been taking the killers out with fentanyl? We will see, since right now, one of the meanest alphas on the city is gunning for Sophie. Aaaaannnd, he has really poor impulse control. 🙄
Sophie is hoping her life will calm down after the fight against the fey at the tower but poor thing can’t catch a break. Her group of odd ones are bonding and becoming closer and she is just the human in the middle. Honestly she handles all the things really well with tons of snark and sarcasm of course lol. But when the people in her dreams and fanciful stories start appearing in real life she’s beginning to question her sanity. Having ogres and were animals in her life no thing. Dream character on her autopsy table is just not okay. This book makes me laugh out loud and keeps the reader guessing as to what is coming next. And how can you not love her neighbor. I recommend reading the entire series to not miss anything or be confused.
Enjoying this series so far. I like Sophie and the variety of paranormal characters in this series so far. Sophie's gift provides a unique start to the mysteries. I like Sophie and Mac together. I also like that they are both flawed. This book introduced new characters and did not showcase Sophie's attitude as much as the first one. There were also a couple of dangling threads which I don't know if it was intentional or an oversight. One had to do with the clavis. Another had to do with a dream about a potential sacrifice. They were both mentioned once with no reference again in this book.
This book follows directly from the shock ending of book one and follows Sophie and the Old ones investigation of the Snow White murders. On the way she crosses claws with a unpleasant alpha wolf, some welcoming Wolfhound shifters and her relationship with Mac moves to a whole new level. loved the story and the great reveal at the end, loved the characters both old and especially the some of the new. Gwen has created a superbly entertaining world. Janine does a wonderful job with the narration bringing the characters to life. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a voluntary honest review
Audiobook: Book 2 of the "Sophie Feegle" series was as entertaining as the first one. Sophie continued to experience dreams which made her conclude that a serial killer was hunting San Francisco's Mythicals. I enjoyed all the twists and turns in this second book. I liked the new shapeshifters that were introduced. There was more steam described. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Janine Granda's narration was great as she provided voices for the various characters, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
A quick mystery to solve for the human psychic and her foxy policeman boyfriend. I mean it's a little cutsie predictable, a dab of magic, and a supporting cast of shifters that span the evil - well meaning - heroic spectrum. The world development is creative and entertaining, the storyline boring, but the characters are fantastic and kept me reading to see how quickly (slowly!!) they would solve the mystery that I figured out many 1000s of words / chapters quicker. A good read, and I'll check out the next books too! A solid 3.9/5 stars for world development and sassy sarcastic characters, 2/5 starts for predictable storyline.
This is a beautifully fun, action packed series with low spice. The chief protagonist, Sophie, works in the morgue and can channel visions of a dead person’s last moments. She is also plagued with dreams about a serial killer vigilante who kills murderers and who looks just like Sophie. A local alpha shifter tries to kill Sophie and the lookalike thwarts his attempt and kills him. The girls realise they are identical twins when a DNA test is done. Sophie’s boyfriend, a fox shifter police officer, kicks ass and looks good doing it.
This is a fun read. It has a lot of humour and I’ve sorted out loud a few times whilst reading this.

The AU is fantastic. It’s original without being obtuse and the commingling with the realistic descriptions of SF lend the book a rich landscape for the characters to inhabit. The big reveal of Snow White’s identity left me wanting to read further into the series and I sincerely hope that it’s not going to be another 18 months before the next installment. However, if that’s what it takes for the author to create these fun and funky mystery novels, the wait is worthwhile.
Another stellar novel in this great series! I absolutely adore these characters and can’t wait to keep reading about this world. I love love LOVE Mac and Sophie’s relationship and can’t wait for the twists that came in this book to be even further explored in Book 3. Also I appreciate that while this book did NOT end on a cliffhanger, the sneak peek for the next book DEFINITELY set the scene for me to want to return to the series :) Hopefully the next book comes out soon!!!
I’ve been finding it hard to find a book lately that appealed. So much seemed the same. I started on Gwen DeMarco’s first book of Sophie Feegle and the Odd Ones and it just swept me away. It’s Saturday morning here and I just sat and read all day long. I’ve managed to finish the second book Portents and Oddities and I am so in love with this author’s work. I cannot wait for the next book. Sophie is such a great character, but the entire cast is awesome and I love Mac.
Sophie was having some really disturbing dreams. But she thought anyone who worked at a morgue would. The weirdest part was in her dreams, she was a serial killer. That's until she figured out they weren't dreams. And in a effort to prevent a death she was blamed by an alpha wolf shifter from the murder of his second. Now she's, along with many other things, in hiding, on the short list not a violent were pack, trying to keep her death abilities secret as she tries to make a relationship with Mac.
There are a few things I really like about this series. First the main character Sophie is brilliant she is sassy and funny, second the different shifters and creatures is so varied I just love finding more with each book and the last thing is the writing it’s so easy so when you want a break from the hard stuff this is some relief. Although I enjoyed this book I didn’t like it as much as book one and it seemed a little rushed towards the end. But if you love a good fantasy book this is a good one.
Sophie and the group are back and the morgue is busier than ever, a serial killer is out there and Sophie seems to be dreaming of the kill each time. We get a new set of characters that really bring more of this new world into view, some new powers to explore, the burgeoning romance for Sophie and even a surprise! A great book to continue the story and to foreshadow the makings of a great new magical series.
One of the read mentioned this series being a love letter to the city by the bay. That stuck with me because of how accurate it is. Beyond spreading out to new neighborhoods, Sophie adds more trusted people to her circle, and those friendships are where the real magic happens here. Oh, and with Larry. Larry's magic cannot be downplayed 😃 I've got some theories where I think Sophie's path leads, and I can't wait for the next book to come out!
One of the best storylines I have read in years! The characters are well developed, both believable and engaging. The plots are interesting and twisty, and the world created around them is one I want to exist. I am so glad that the author, Gwen DeMarco, wrote a second book, Portents and Oddities, because Sophie and the Odd Ones ended much too soon! I hope the series is several books long.
