Rate this book
As the snow falls on Four Corners Ranch, all this untamed cowboy wants for Christmas is the family he’s never had…

Cowboy Wolf Garrett is delighted his brother is happily married—really, he is. But time can never heal Wolf’s own wounds, so being surrounded by such marital joy is a bit…much. A trip to his extended family’s ranch in Copper Ridge seems the ideal change of scenery. Until he meets local innkeeper Violet Donnelly and realizes he’s exchanged one form of torture for another—trying, and spectacularly failing, to resist their instant, wildly hot chemistry.

Violet knew Wolf was trouble the moment he walked into her inn. But it's a whole new level of trouble when she discovers that their secret nights have left her pregnant! Especially when she has six feet of gorgeous, furious cowboy demanding that she come home with him for the holidays and marry him. Wolf has lost more than she could ever imagine, but Violet believes in the power of love to heal, and she’ll do anything to give their future family a chance. Wolf has already given her so many firsts—dare she hope he’s about to become her first Christmas miracle too?

Rating 3.5

A love story about a hero who is closed off after a tragic loss and heroine with a warm and determined heart for love and family. A bit of a slow start but once it picks up you will be engaged and eager for their HEA.

Wolf our hero is wrestling with some feelings of jealousy for his broth Sawyer and he doesn't like it. He's happy for his brother and his new family but it brings to the surface some feelings that are better left buried. Feelings of loss and pain, feelings of what he could have had, as he lost someone he loved sixteen years ago. He decided what he needed was a change of scenery. His cousin at Copper Ridge invited Wolf to come visit and assist in him a project he had going at his ranch.

Violet Donnelly helps her family run a inn and also works part time at the family bakery. She loves her family and the love and security that they bring to her life. But one day she receives a guest at the Inn that throws her off kilter, Wolf Garret. A family friend/relative that has been invited to assist at the ranch and will be staying at the Inn. The two characters are both shocked and a little leery of their instant attraction. Violet though has decided that it was something she wanted to explore and cautiously proceeds to engage Wolf and get to know him. Wolf recently has been unsettled and dissatisfied with his one night stands and maybe an affair with Violet is what he needs. So Wolf begins his quest to charm and engage Violet in an affair and Violet cannot resist Wolf. The two embarked on a sizzling affair. After about two weeks Wolf decided it's time to go home and ends things with Violet. Violet tries to talk Wolf into staying longer and continuing their affair/relationship, but Wolf was clear when they started the affair that nothing would come of it.

Well Violet gets a surprise five weeks later, she is pregnant. Through the rumor mill Wolf finds out before Violet can tell him. Wolf and Violet's past childhood, being abanded and raised by only one parent, have shaped and molded them into who they are now and both have very strong feelings about family. Wolf proposes right away. Violet resists at first but doesn't take long for her to realize that would be the best for all involved and agrees to a marry Wolf.

Violet moves to Garret's Watch with Wolf and they begin their married life together. And Violet is heartbroken to see that Wolf totally closes himself off to Violet and this is not what she envisioned for their married life and family. And so the anguish begins for these two characters. And so begins my desire to hit Wolf with a two by four on the side of the head. He becomes a jerk and I really struggled with his actions. Violet does all she can to make the relationship work but Wolf is cold and determined not to open his heart. Violet shares with him that she loves him and he proceeds to say he will never love her, he is still in love with the girl he lost years ago. 😑😩 Talk about angst and anger, I experienced both for Violet and Wolf. This was a messy and emotional part of their love story, but they needed this to work through and get to their HEA.

With secondary characters, family and friends, we have a combined effort to help the two main characters find love. Violet and Wolf have to rutter through their feelings, emotions and past issues before they realize they have a love worth fighting for and keeping.

I enjoyed this but have to be honest Wolf isn't my favorite hero of Maisey Yates. But in the end he came through. This definitely will stir up a lot of angst and anger.

4.5 stars. These books are hitting that soul spot for me this holiday season. I’m realizing what the family sees as a generational curse so to speak, and it probably is, but these chains are being broken by the right woman that gives that hard tough love. The kind of love that is willing to crawl through glass to save them and show them a new way. The bricks that have been built up around these cowboys hearts get blasted away and when the realization hits and the tears fall - it is beautiful to witness. The dam breaking is glorious and cathartic.

I am hooked on this series!!!!

“She wanted to leave. After I said I loved her. She jumped off the dock to swim away from me. Me. And my love. Because that’ s how awful it is to be loved by me. Everyone runs from it eventually.”

H must be the most idiotic MMC of Ms Yates! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Initial thoughts:

I gave this a generous three stars just because I loved revisiting the characters from Copper Ridge, and seeing that tight knit family that they had become. The familial relationships and the love they had for one another was precious. The way they loved Violet was amazing. What was not amazing was the romance. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like him, and it just didn’t work for me. Violet deserved so much better than what she got. I didn’t think Wolf deserved in the end.

Review (It’s going to a lot of ranting so be warned):

MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD, Read at your own risk

Going into this story I know I was gonna have an issue with it because it had my least favorite trope in romance which was surprise/accidental baby due to a fling/one night stand. It’s just not my cup of tea but knowing this was about Violet Donnelly and we get to revisit the Copper Ridge setting as well as the characters made me more excited and wanting to read this. In fact I was very much anticipating this one ever since it got teased awhile ago.

But let me tell you this sure did disappoint me. I think this was my least favorite romance that Maisey Yates has ever written. I absolutely hated the romance in here, and I hated the hero Wolf so much and pretty much instantaneously when he appeared on the page. As I was reading it I had a very big bad taste in my mouth, and it was very hard to get through. I had skim with the hopes that it would better once pregnancy came to life even though there was a slight glimmer in the middle, it quickly skyrocketed down and made me so made and upset. It wasn’t the romance that Violet deserved. I was expecting so more.

The main reason I hated this so much was the character of Wolf. I couldn’t stand the guy. He came off as really smarmy and very much a jerk. He treated Violet horribly. He was very manipulative, condescending, and just not a nice guy to her throughout the book. I felt like he was playing a game with in order to get her into bed. It was a cute nor charming way either. It was just gross. He sulked when she didn’t fall into be with him with the snap of his fingers. He even made the comment that it wasn’t worth the effort to woo her just get her into bed. Once she finally did give into him, all it was about was the physical and nothing more. Then he broke heart after giving her “I told you this was just a fling” crap. Only claimed to miss her in his bed and nothing more so he didn’t return to her until she learned she was pregnant and demand she marry him. Then proceeded to keep emotional distance from her only to have Violet give him what he wanted, which was her body. He literally gave her absolutely nothing while Violet gave him everything and so much more. There was no affection. No wooing. No romance. Nothing. Even love confession at the end was weak. He just kept taking and taking and hurting Violet in the process. The fact he claimed to be in love her wasn’t shown with a shred of evidence. There was little to none. The gestures that were made were nudged by someone else and not his own heart. He needed to do a lot to be a worthy hero for Violet, and he just didn’t in my opinion. I definitely didn’t feel that while reading it. He just gave me not a good feeling as a love interest while I was reading it.

Granted people could argue with me and say that Wolf was like every hero ever that Maisey Yates has ever wrote. To that I would say they are correct and the formula for this romance has followed many of the formulas that means he has written in the past and have become stories I loved and adored but there was just something about wolf that just rubbed me the wrong way and pissed me off for most of the book. I didn’t care about all this trauma that he had that caused him to act the way he did because that felt like an excuse more than anything. He did not have to be the manipulative prick that he was in the beginning. He just was very much Loring Violet I felt to do his bidding. Violet stated she felt that strong poor towards wolf too but I didn’t buy it. I felt like he was just trying to get his way in anyway possible. It was not charming. It was not cute. It was just disturbing. It was just how it came across was not good.

Unlike with other Maisey Yates heroes, who come off as so much more likable, charming, and funny that it didn’t matter that they were dogs looking for nothing but a good time between the sheets and were very much playboys all while keeping emotions at a distance and not wanting any part of it due to the trauma that they faced in life. I could at least connect with those heroes and understand where they’re coming from and know that once they find their hell and that their lives were gonna be so much better because of life. Plus those heroes do something endearing or sweet or tender for the heroine before their love confession comes out after they push them away. There’s just some form of caring there that spoke of their connection. They weren’t perfect to say the least and they messed up a lot but I felt like they were genuinely sorry and made up for the harm that they caused that heroin along the way. I could root for them, but I just couldn’t do it for Wolf. He just rubbed me the wrong way.

Also, I hated how much a puppy dog Violet was with Wolf. It was like she was begging for his attention and lap dog whatever he gave her, which wasn’t a lot. And even though he spelt it out in black-and-white what he was going to give her was upset when he did exactly that. She kept making excuses for him and justifying his actions just to be with him. It was kind of gross that she willing to take that from him. Yes she did grow a backbone halfway through which I was happy to see and when the story got a little bit better but he quickly backtracked when she went back to her puppy dog ways and basically gave him everything he wanted. I hated that. After a while it felt like she became his punching bag after all the emotional harm he caused to her with his not wanting to deal with his own demons but willing to hurt her in the process.

Again many Maisey Yates books have this formula but not as blatant or as brutal as it was in this one. At least in other books, the heroine got a semblance of what she wanted or what she thought she wanted. There was respect between the hero and the heroine where they were on equal footing and had the same amount of power. While in this case I think Wolf manipulated Violet to get her in his power. I felt there was such imbalance of power there. I hated it.

The bright side of all of us and made me stick around to reading it till the very end was the setting of Copper Ridge and the characters from Copper Ridge. I loved how many appearances were made by past characters in this book. I loved there were little catch up here and there with some favorites from the serious. It made me think that even though this was the first second generation story that Maisey has told I don’t think it’s gonna be the last especially with the amount of children that were mentioned in this book and I am all for them getting their own books sometime in the future. And I am so excited for it.

Also the amount familial love in her was incredible. The love and support that Violet had from her friends and family was great. My favorite scene were whenever Violet had interactions with Alison, Cain, or Clara. It just warmed my heart so much as the showered her with love and affection. She got more from them than she got from Wolf, which was sad seeing this was a romance. I could read more about their relationships than the one with Wolf. I would have even liked if she chose to stay with them instead of him.

This was the hardest review that I have ever written about a Maisey Yates book. I have read her books for years upon years, and I have to say this was my least favorite books of hers. I have never ever used the word hated when giving my thoughts on books, but I used it for this one. I just that Violet deserved so much more than she was given. She deserved a hero that absolutely worshipped the ground she walked on, but Wolf didn’t. If there were sexy times then he was lavishing his attention on her, but nothing beyond that. He was selfish and just took too much advantage of Violet after giving him everything. Yes, he talked to her, but never did anything with intention of making happy or to see her smile nor did he really want the best for her. That’s not what romance is to me especially a Maisey Yates one. Maisey Yates has created some fantastic damaged heroes that learn that love can heal while showing the heroine they care outside the bedroom. This stories were so beautiful. This was not that story and Wolf was not that hero. He just irritated me like no other. I hope this will be my least favorite book of Maisey and I can look forward to more of her gloriousness moving forward.

My ratings:
Merry Christmas Cowboy ⭐️⭐️⭐️¾🎄🤠
Her Cowboy Prince Charming ⭐️⭐️⭐️½🤠🤴

My thoughts: 🔖8% Ch. 3 - It's been a while since I had an ebook without page numbers and I'm not amused. Right off the bat, the story is entertaining. Wolf is a good narrator and we're introduced to his virgin love interest. I have to look up Copper Ridge because it seems like there is a series connection there, starring his cousins.
🔖78% Ch. 21 - It doesn't feel at all like a Christmas story. There is a Christmas tree and that was 40% into the story. They've mentioned lights and dinner and if it wasn't for my memory I would have set this book in August in my head because it doesn't feel like Christmas, it barely feels like fall. The sex is tamer than in the previous book.

Merry Christmas Cowboy - This story was good but it had it's flaws. It was set in a different series so there were a lot of new characters to get through. Overall I liked the first half the last quarter wasn't my favorite.

Her Cowboy Prince Charming - So I guess all of these novellas are retellings. This one was short and to the point. A little spicier than the novel.

There seems to be a theme of virgins, friends, abandonment, and accidental pregnancies. I like the arranged marriages when they are mail-order if every book is a remix of the same 5 elements I may not be completing this series.

Recommend to others: Yes if you're into innocent girls and bad boys.

I stopped reading Maisey Yates' books about 3 years ago, frustrated with how conservative her gender politics had grown. But I was in the mood for a holiday romance, and saw this at the library, and so thought I would give it a try.

Wish I hadn't. The gender politics were even more conservative in this book than I remembered them being in her earlier work. Protagonists here are a 22-year old female and a 32-year old male, both with abandonment issues. Violet deals with hers by being a goody-two-shoes (after one small rebellious incident as a teen, featured in a previous Yates book) and not fooling around with any of the boring guys in her small Oregon town. Wolf deals with his by having lots of one-night stands. Of course, the bad boy, come to Copper Ridge to help his cousins with a ranch expansion project, is immediately attracted to the good girl. And since the good girl is a bit tired of only living to please others, she takes her best friend/aunt's advice to have some hot sex with the visitor. Which would have been okay, but then of course Violet falls for Wolf, and cries and begs him to stay with her when he announces he's about to head back home after two weeks. Which he told her when they started their hot affair. Ugh.

Even worse, Violet is punished for her rebellion, discovering . Word gets back to Wolf through the family grapevine about it, and he immediately decides that they must marry (just where did his conservative values about marriage come from?? His own father never modeled them... It's like the mind-set is just in the Oregon small-town water; no matter what one's personal experience is, in Yates' world, all the male protagonists are bent on being manly men and doing the right thing and protecting their women).

The rest of the book is no plot, just endless conversations about feelings, between Violet and Wolf, between Violet and various family members, and between Wolf and his brother. And ends with the typical Yates late-book revelation on the part of the more reluctant/wary half of the couple, that he really should stop being so commitment-averse. A revelation completely unmotivated by any action in the plot.

Worst moment: early in the book, when Violet protests that she doesn't need anything from a food truck, and Wolf insists on buying her something. And she doesn't think, "boy, this guy doesn't listen to me or respect my decisions," but instead "lik[es] the way that he bulldozed her protestations in order to make sure she was taken care of. She didn't know why she liked it. Only that she did." (51-52). Ah, she likes it because women are not supposed to advocate for their own needs, express their own wants and desires, but are supposed to suppress them, and pray that they find a man who will ignore their passive-aggressive self-abnegation and give them what they want. Yuck...

Could also do without the "I must ask her father for her hand" crap, and the "my dad will kick the shit out of you if he finds out that we've had sex"...

And Wolf's insisting Violet to take a pregnancy test, and when she protests that "it's my body," he says "I don't know what gave you the idea that I was enlightened or some shit, but I'm not. And I want to know the answer. While I'm standing here." And of course Violet caves.

Guess there are a lot of candidates for "worst moment"...

At least the older brother in the bonus story at book's end agrees with his best friend who sleeps with his younger sister (another virgin) that he shouldn't do any ass-kicking. Because a 23-year-old woman should be able to choose who she will sleep with, without interference from her older brother. Too bad older brother has this conversation with the best friend, instead of with his sister...

Gosh! Wolf had me worried there for a minute. But the bad boys always fall the hardest. If you can weather the storm. Violet was sweet but resilient, and she didn't let Wolf get away with his crap. I'm enjoying these Four Corner cowboys and the ladies who love them.

Maisey Yates never fails to bring deep feelings to her stories and this one just might be one of her deepest. It's messy, emotional, angsty, and has a closed-off hero that I -more than once - wanted to toss off a cliff. He comes around in the end (of course he does) but, wow, the journey to that point is not easy.

Violet, on the other hand, is incredibly easy to like. She's upbeat, sweet, devoted to her family, and a loyal friend but she too has hidden emotional demons to work through. Her character growth is just as important as Wolf's and it was very satisfying to watch her take charge of her happiness.

The physical attraction between these two is never an issue, leading to several steamy encounters. What holds them apart is fear. For Violet, it's the fear of disappointing her father and stepmother, especially as she still struggles with her mother's abandonment when she was 13. For Wolf, it's a double-edged sword. Maybe triple-edged. His mother left when he was six, choosing her family over her child. His father was a cold man who never showed affection to his children and never made a commitment to a woman. Then there was the tragic death of Wolf's teenage love, a young girl frozen forever in time who holds his heart still. There's a whole lot of "stuff" he needs to work through before he'll ever be free to offer his heart to Violet. As I said earlier, it's messy, but I appreciate that Yates never allows her characters to take the easy way out. She makes them face their demons head on, have those difficult conversations, sometimes knocks them upside the head with 2 x 4 realization boards to open their eyes before finally guiding them to their HEA. It's not always an easy journey but it is - always - a satisfying one.

Merry Christmas Cowboy is the second book in Maisey Yates' Four Corners Ranch series, with crossover characters from her earlier Copper Ridge: The Garretts series and Copper Ridge: The Donnellys series. Fans of those books will no doubt enjoy catching up with favorite couples while readers new to Yates should have no trouble enjoying Merry Christmas Cowboy as a standalone.

Merry Christmas Cowboy by Maisey Yates is the second book in the Four Corner’s Ranch series. The Four Corner’s Ranch is the setting for this series. The ranch is really four ranches that all meet a corner. The ranches, although owned by specific families, work together to help each other and move toward a sustainable future for all of them.

Wolf Garrett (great name) is still suffering from wounds from his teens. His brother is happily married, not that he is ever going to get married himself. Wolf decided to spend time with his cousins at Copper Ridge. Little did he expect to find Violet.

Violet Donnelly tries to be the perfect child. She helps out her family, works in the bakery and helps run the Bed and Breakfast. When Wolf walked in the B and B, she knew her life would NEVER be the same. Tall, dark and handsome with a certain swagger that makes him a cowboy not to be forgotten. Two weeks of paradise with Wolf seemed to be perfect when life took a turn…pregnancy. Now everything changes and Violet and Wolf have some decisions to make.

As part of this novel - there is a novella at the end of the book, Her Cowboy Prince Charming. This is a lovely story about Jessie and Damien. Jessie has been in love with Damien her WHOLE life, but he has always kept his distance due to the age difference. Until this Christmas holiday, when things line up for both of them. Love the story!

Maisey Yates is a gifted writer. Her cowboys are to die for and the stories bring me into their world and make it hard for me to face reality after! Merry Christmas Cowboy by Maisey Yates is a fabulous read!!!

~~~ I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review ~~~
This is the first Maisey Yates book I've read- WHY?- I've seriously been missing out! I adored this holiday romance that follows the budding relationship between Wolf and Violet. They both have big issues in their past to overcome before they can truly find their way to eachother. This is a story of healing, love, family, and trust. Yates has created a cast of characters that are both likeable and relatable- I was hooked on the story immediately. There are some steamy scenes and lots of drama. Overall, very well written, though slow in some areas- but I'll definitely be looking to pick up more of Yates' books in the future!
This book was cute for what it is. A cowboy Christmas romance. I enjoyed the grumpy sunshine trope. I wanted to shake Wolf half the novel to tell him to wake up. Happy that he finally got with the picture and kudos for Violet for being a strong female character who knew what she wanted and wouldn't stop at anything to have that stand in her way.
2nd book in the series Four Corners Ranch. Now I’m always happy with a Maisey story , she does romance right every single time!!! This book delivered. There are some times I’m ready to stomp the hero, he had a difficult time with being the good guy. Now don’t get me wrong our heroine had a difficult time stepping up as well but she was easy to love and want to fight for. Our boy finally got it right and by the last page I was back to cheering.
Merry Christmas Cowboy is the second novel in Maisey Yates' Four Corners Ranch series, and while I was expecting a sweet, sexy Christmas story, this novel might just be Ms. Yates' most angst-filled novel yet, and for the first time since I started reading her, it contained a hero I wanted to smack upside the head, or at least have her heroine do so, which is the reason for this 4-star, rather than 5-star review.
The novel opens with Wolf Garrett, who is jealous of the happiness his brother Sawyer found in the first book in this series, and yes, you should read this series in order. Rather than do his usual routine of picking up a woman at a local bar for a one-night stand, he decides on a change of scene, and heads off to visit his cousin in Copper Ridge, Oregon (another excellent series), which is where he encounters Violet Donnelly, working as both the local innkeeper, and part-time at the family bakery. For both characters it's lust at first sight, but not only is Wolf 10 years older than Violet, Violet, age 22, is still a virgin, because she has an inner need to be the good girl who does everything right, and because she's never met a man she particularly wanted--until now.
Wolf is both a gorgeous hunk and a charmer, and Violet can't resist him. They begin to bond over a commonality--both have had their mothers walk out on them, Wolf at age 9, Violet at 13. Additionally, Wolf lost the girl he loved 16 years ago, and has refused to become involved and possibly hurt by what he views as part family curse and part being unlovable again. After his two weeks in Copper Ridge, and his steamy affair with Violet, he heads back home to Garrett’s Watch, despite the pleas and tears of Violet, who begged him to stay. In his mind, it's not as if he didn't warn her.
Five weeks later, it turns out that Violet is pregnant, and Wolf discovers that bit of news via rumor. Violet wanted to tell him herself, but someone beat her to it, and just as she's ready to take a pregnancy test to confirm the pregnancy, Wolf is back, and orders her to take the test while he waits. It's positive, and Wolf drops to one knee and proposes marriage, knowing how it felt to be raised by a single parent and abandoned by the other. While Violet doesn't immediately agree, she does accept Wolf's invitation to return to Garrett’s Watch with him, and once she's there, the charmer that Wolf was at the outset becomes someone Violet barely recognizes as the man she fell in love with--she's parked in his guest room, and basically ignored while Wolf goes about his usual days and duties on the ranch, and leaves Violet wondering what the heck happened to the guy she met in Copper Ridge--and left this reader wondering the same thing. When Violet makes the mistake of telling Wolf that she loves him, instead of telling Violet he loves her too, he tells her that he doesn't love her and never will--he's still in love with the girl he loved who died 16 years ago. This is where we move into uber-angst mode, and this is also the point where I wished for a cast iron frying pan to use on Wolf's head, and so did the other members of Wolf's family.
Maisey Yates is a master at creating characters with real depth, real emotions, and real issues, and she's done so again in this novel, putting the reader, as well as her characters, through quite an emotional wringer before we get to the expected HEA ending. While Wolf wasn't among my favorite of her heroes, this was still a novel I stayed up all night to finish, because I simply couldn't put it down, and I'm guessing you won't be able to do that either. Although it didn't give me the usual Christmas-themed warm fuzzies, and while sometimes maddening, it was still an excellent read and I'm happy to recommend it.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
Merry Christmas Cowboy by Maisey Yates, book two in her Four Corners series, is a deeply moving, beautifully written and heart-wrenching, story of the complicated lives of Wolf and Violet two people still dealing with being abandoned by their mothers. Wolf Garrett is in a rut and decides he needs a change in scenery. When his cousins in Copper Ridge call, asking for help with an expansion to their ranch, he volunteers to go. He will be staying at an Inn owned by his cousin’s wife Sadie, where he encounters Violet Donnelly, the innkeeper. Little does he know how much she is going to mean to his life, but recognizes the instant attraction and spark of chemistry they have for one another could burn the inn down. Aware that Violet is an innocent and not his usual type, is not going to stop him; all he knows is he wants her. Violet splits her time between being an innkeeper and baking for her Stepmother’s bakery; trying to be the perfect daughter. Violet knew from the moment she saw Wolf that he was trouble and that she did not have the experience to handle his kind of trouble; but she wanted it just the same. While tempting him with her cooking and sweet ways, she knows she is fighting a losing battle; especially becoming pregnant as a result of their shared nights of passion. Wounded by the loss of his teenage sweetheart, Wolf commits to providing for Violet and their unborn child but cannot bear the thought of risking his heart again. Violet wants their family to mean more to Wolf than just a duty and is determined to show Wolf that love has not passed him by.
There is a bonus novella at the end, Her Cowboy Prince Charming, a Cinderella retelling, with Jessie Granger attending a masked ball but the prince is her brother’s best friend, Damien Prince, the guy she has crushed on for years. This story had me smiling from start to finish and fanning myself at times as well.
Ms. Yates wrote a wonderful, intense, emotional, steamy story, remindful of how the past shapes the present and the future, and should not be missed. She provided a tale rich with soul-searching, angst, sizzling chemistry, and an amazing cast of previous and new characters. This powerful and emotional story will have you turning each page wanting to find out if Violet and Wolf’s journey to love is smooth or rocky and if the hurts from their pasts can create a strong relationship leading them to love and their happiness. I highly recommend Merry Christmas Cowboy to other readers.
Wolf Garett of Four Corners ranch has come to Copper Ridge to help out his cousin’s ranch to help them out with some with some expansion to their ranch. They made him a reservation at an Inn owned by Eli’s wife Sadie and it there he encounters Violet Donnelly, who is the innkeeper. He does not realize just how much she is going to mean to his life, but he knows that the instant attraction they have for one another can burn the place down. He fans the flames while knowing Violet is an innocent, but he just knows he wants her.
Violet knew from the moment she laid eyes on Wolf that he was trouble and she knew she did not have the experience to handle his kind of trouble, but she wanted it just the same. While she tempts him with her cooking and sweet ways, she knows she is fighting a losing battle and when their nights of passion result in her becoming pregnant. Although Wolf his furious with himself for this happening, he knows that he can’t let her go this alone and invites or more like demands that she come to his family’s ranch for the holidays and because she can’t face the disappointment of her family, she agrees. Even a shared unhappiness in their young lives cannot bring Wolf to say those magic words and Violet has to show him every day that they love each other and have a future together. Can the Christmas season bring a miracle for them both?
This was a powerful and emotional story that has you turning each page in anticipation of finding out how the road to love will be for Violet and Wolf and how hurts from their pasts form the deep and passionate relationship that will put them on the path to love and their happiness. This book brings us more of the Four Corner families and meeting up with all the folks who live in Copper Ridge who are trying to bring these two people together. Maisey Yates is a wonderful story teller and I look forward to more of The Four Corner families.
Thank you to Maisey Yates and her publisher for sending me this book for my honest review. This is a solid 5-star book.
This book was just full of surprises! Richly emotional with unique characters who fought to overcome the wounds of their past. Angsty, humorous, and laced with friends and family, love and loyalty, and regret and forgiveness. Reading it was like coming home and arriving some place new all at once.
Wolf Garrett is a heartbreaker of a man. I didn't quite like him at first. Well, I did, but I didn't want to like him. He was just shy of too much for me and yet, it was clear, right from the start, that he had this soul-deep intensity about him. That whatever he had gone through had left a massive wound inside of him, and love would have a hell of a time closing it over. Turns out, I was right that wound. He was a stubborn man, and in the end, he might just be one of my favorite romance heroes to date.
Violet Donnelly is a sweetheart of a gal. Too sweet for her own good. And when she comes face-to-face with Wolf, it is quickly apparent that she is going in hot and about to be in way, way over her head. Yet, as sweet as she is, Violet is no pushover. She's feisty when she needs to be, and even more stubborn than Wolf when she puts her mind to it. She's honest to a fault, and even though she knows she should protect herself--protect her heart--she can't quite bring herself to put a lid on it. She's massively unprepared and still manages to navigate the landscape in a way that not only changes her but provides her with more clarity than her years suggest she should have. I loved her for that.
If you’re looking for an emotionally deep romance read that is filled to the brim with angst, love, family, and friendship, Merry Christmas Cowboy by Maisey Yates is the book for you. It’s a beautifully satisfying story with two incredibly deserving, well-rounded characters.
I absolutely loved this book, and I was reminded, yet again, why I will buy anything Maisey Yates writes and publishes. Because I know I will always get a wonderful, emotionally charged read that is guaranteed to make me think and quite probably, also make me cry.
Merry Christmas Cowboy: A Novel
Maisey Yates
October 25, 2022
Back at the Four Corners Ranch Wolf Garrett shouldn’t be feeling jealous of his older brother, Sawyer. True, recently he became a father to June. When her mother decided motherhood is not in her plans Sawyer took June into his home, then put an ad looking for a mail-order bride, a wife for him, a mother for June. Low and behold Evelyn walked into their lives and of course Sawyer once again beat the odds. Younger brother Wolf never had that kind of luck. Despite his good looks he never felt attracted to the women in his life. Oh, he would try but nothing worked out. He decided to visit his cousin in Copper Ridge, Oregon. It was a good time to leave Garret’s Watch. They had enough help, things were well with the crops and cattle. Cousin Eli could show him around the Garrett Ranch and he could perhaps get ideas for their own parcel.
Eli had made reservations for him to stay at the local bed and breakfast that the family ran. Upon arrival he was welcomed by Violet Donnelly. She was preparing for the guests arrival with fresh coffee and cookies. When Wolf walked in, Violet was spelbound. Who could this magnificent cowboy be? And is he a guest? Thus begins the tale of the duo, both with charm and good looks yet plenty of baggage.
Merry Christmas Cowboy by Maisey Yates will be published by Harlequin Digital Sales on October 25, 2022. I appreciate Harlequin allowing me to read and review Yates' most recent holiday novel via NetGalley. This book is the second in the Four Corners Ranch series. Her writing is excellent and compelling to read. She brings the complicated lives of Wolf and Violet into the reader's heart. Fans of Four Corners introduction to Sawyer and his family will be delighted by Wolf Garrett’s introduction to the series. This is a wonderful seasonal tribute for readers. Do pick this one up and enjoy.
After seeing his brother get married, Wolf realizes that, while he's happy for him, he needs a little bit of a break, and so he goes to visit their extended family at their ranch. What he doesn't expect is to meet Violet who runs the local inn. Violet is much younger than Wolf, but when she sees him, she knows he's definitely going to be trouble, but that trouble might be worth it. Wolf can't seem to get over her, and so he decides to get with Violet, continuing to see her for the entire time that he is staying with his cousins... but when she begs him to stay, he leaves. Weeks go by, and Wolf gets a call about Violet who is pregnant. With his child. Determined not to be like his father before him, Wolf decides he's going to stay around and help raise the child. Violet wants more than just someone to raise a child with, and Wolf is extremely emotionally unavailable. It's going to take a real Christmas miracle for Wolf to wake up and allow himself to be happy.
There's just something about these emotionally unavailable cowboys that I cannot get enough of. I love the story of Wolf and Violet and how they can't seem to stay away from each other, though they both attribute it to different things. I love the character growth here with Violet realizing that she doesn't need to fit herself into a box to make her parents love her, and also with Wolf, as he realizes that it's okay to be loved. I absolutely adore the way that Wolf thinks, and I find his internal monologue endearing as he works through his own childhood traumas. Violet grows on you as she has her own personal growth, coming to terms with the fact that she is a person outside of her family and that she doesn't need to be perfect. I might not be the biggest fan of surprise pregnancies, but the way this was done made sense to me, and so I felt like this was extremely realistic in terms of their fling. I am loving this ranch and the people on it and I cannot wait to get to the next book and see who is next.
Wolf Garrett found love early in life, cherished every moment of it, and then lost it in a flash. Losing the love of his life has taken it's toll, turned him into a grumpy closed off man that's opposed to love, but totally okay with a hook-up here and there. Being the single guy around the Four Corners Ranch has been a little tougher than he'd care to admit, as he watches his brother embark on his happily ever after he can't help but secretly want a taste of it himself, but that would require him putting himself out there again... and that is something he's not so sure he can do. That is until a beautiful angel wanders onto his path...
The pages of Merry Christmas Cowboy hold a story that is destined to warm you heart, nothing is more beautiful than watching someone get a second chance at love after loss. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this cowboy find his happily ever after, even if it took some time for him to warm up to the idea. The moment he met Violet you could feel the sparks leap off the pages, these two were perfect for one another, it was as if she was put on his path, with a little help from above, with the sole purpose to heal his broken heart. Watching her tempt and torture him at every turn was pure bliss, and quite entertaining. It was such a wonderfully written love story brimming with all the things needed to leave your heart soaring!!
I have to say nobody does cowboy's quite like Ms. Yates, hers are one of a kind and truly unforgettable!! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, Wolf is destined to steal your heart at first glance!
I received an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, as part of Ms. Yates Grassroots Crew, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Wolf Garrett needs a break from his brother's happily married bliss and decides to visit his cousins on the other side of the state. His cousins put him up in a B&B they have on their property. The B&B is being managed by Violet Donnelly, who identifies Wolf as trouble and enticement the minute he walks in the B&B. A whirlwind affair ensues and then he leaves, despite Violet wanting him to stay. A few weeks later she realizes she's pregnant. Wolf shows up to 'do the right thing' and takes her back to his cabin on Four Corners ranch. As they navigate an unplanned pregnancy, living arrangement, and complicated feelings due to past hurts they find what they always want just in time for Christmas.
[This was just an okay book; had a lot of errors, seemed choppy in the writing, and lacked oomph.]
Her Cowboy Prince Charming
This novella was definitely more Christmasey than the first story--more magical and romantic.
Jessie Granger wants something new this Christmas so she decides to dress up and go to the Christmas Masquerade Ball. Once there she's drawn to a man off by himself, in all-black with a Zorro mask, so she propositions him and winds up losing her virginity in a storage closet before running off. The next morning, she finds out that she had her first experience with her long-time crush Damien who just happens to be in town for Christmas and is staying on her brother's property. Trying to keep this knowledge from her brother and deal with the consequences of her actions, can the magic of Christmas really work on this jaded unbeliever and bring her a Christmas miracle.
Maisey Yates brings us to Four Corners Ranch where we meet Wolf and Violet. Wolf is the lone Garrett brother who decides that a change in scenery might help him out, so he goes to visit family in Copper Ridge. There, he is met by innkeeper Violet Donnelly and there is the instant spark of chemistry. Violet splits her time between being an innkeeper and baking for her family bakery. She is hoping that by being the perfect daughter, she could atone for her past. But she knows that meeting Wolf could be her downfall. When they surrender to their passion, there are lasting consequences. Will they be able to overcome their past enough to forge a future together, or will they sabotage what could be for staying in the past?
Maisey Yates brings us a story of how the past shapes the present and the future. Through Wolf and Violet, we get to follow their path as they find their way to each other, then see if they can stay the course. Through it all, we get to meet their extended families and see the dynamics that make up the love and support they get from them. It will be nice to come back to Four Corners Ranch and Copper Ridge to catch up with everyone in the future. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing, HQN for this privilege.
Merry Christmas Cowboy is the second book in prolific storyteller Maisey Yates’ Four Corners Ranch series. Wolf Garrett is seriously happy for his brother Sawyer and his new wife and baby, but enough already of the love aura they give off. A few weeks with their cousins to help with some things on their ranch at Copper Ridge should give him a break from all this love.
Wolf will be staying at the ranch’s Bed and Breakfast established in the original Victorian house from the beginning days. Violet Donnelly, B&B manager, senses the trouble Wolf will bring her way at first glance, but she is also attracted in a way like never before. Violet’s background is not terribly dissimilar from Wolf’s, but at least she had a loving father, however she still never witnessed a loving couple as she grew up.
With such an extreme attraction on both parts, Wolf’s two weeks fly by with many long, romantic evenings. When Wolf discovers, after home for weeks, that Violet is with child he immediately returns to Copper Ridge with the intent of bringing Violet back to Four Corners Ranch with him.
This is a very well plotted story with likable characters and lovely locations. Ms. Yates carefully designed the main characters backstories and has the reader rooting for them to overcome their histories. I very much enjoyed this book, as well as the included novella, Her Cowboy Prince Charming, and do recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for an eARC of this title for review. All opinions are honestly given and are my own.
In Merry Christmas Cowboy, hotly-burning chemistry between cowboy Wolf Garrett and innkeeper Violet Donnelly has unexpected consequences when Violet discovers she is pregnant after their short-term fling. Wounded by the loss of his teenage sweetheart, Wolf is committed to provide for Violet and their unborn child but cannot bear the thought of risking his heart again. However, Violet wants their future family to be more to Wolf than just a duty and is determined to show Wolf that love has not passed him by.
This was the perfect festive read to prepare for the holiday season. Wolf and Violet are both warm, fully-rounded characters who must learn to trust again and earn their happy ending. I loved these characters and seeing how Yates skillfully wove together their story of opening themselves back up to love after grief and loss. For readers who are fans of Yates’s earlier works, they will enjoy seeing some of their favorite characters from Copper Ridge and Four Corners’ Ranch. Merry Christmas Cowboy is a wonderful addition to this series and is sure to be a hit with fans of Yates’s earlier works, contemporary Westerns, or gentle festive reads. 4 stars.
Big bad dark menacing Wolf sees innocent lamb Violet and pounces. He’s a no feelings one night fling guy, who just became Violet’s first time.
I felt some sympathy for Wolf because he made his position very clear but Violet spun moonbeams and unicorns about their affair. Until Wolf went back home and left her a wolflet to nurture.
Merry Christmas Cowboy is a heavy emotional read. Wolf has serious abandonment issues and has walled himself off. He doesn’t love himself and feels unworthy of love because he has been left, twice.
Violet is stubborn, but can she break through his dense brick head?
Although I was all in for alpha male Wolf, I Have to say Cain Donolly stole a good portion of the book, unintentionally. When he threatened Wolf with a pre-shoveled grave and a bag of lime, I was a fan. That was the best line in the entire book!
Read for yourself To see if Wolf is tamed or puts up a howling protest. I couldn’t help the lupine references.
Thanks to HTP and NetGalley for the advance read.
Wolf if staying at Violets inn so he can attend his brothers wedding. While he's happy for his bother he doesn't think the whole love thing is for him especially with his past. But Violet got him thinking otherwise and is surprised to find that after a passionate him with Violet she's pregnant. Now they need to learn more about eachother while dealing with the fact that they'll have a child soon.
I really enjoyed this book it was a pretty fast read for me. I enjoyed getting to know more about the characters and why they were the way they were and making it a thing where they will stick together because they knew what it felt like to be abandoned by a parent and just having a hectic past. I loved the passion between the characters and seeing how they were working together to navigate this new life they were going to have to make and meeting each others family during the holiday season. Overall great book I really enjoyed it.
Also theres a novella attached as well it was a really good read so yay for bonus stories!
In this second book of the Four Corners Ranch series we get to follow Wolf Garrett around (he is Sawyer Garrett's younger brother from the first book.) Wolf heads out to their cousins ranch in Copper Ridge to help out, and get some space from the newlyweds! There he meets Violet Donnelly who is the innkeeper at the B&B he is staying at. Much tohis surprise, and hers, sparks are immediately flying between them.
He's not looking for anything permanent as he still carries around baggage from the death of his high school girlfriend (yes, like 15+ years later), and she feels like she needs to take a risk and push outside her box. They spend two weeks together while he is in town, then he heads home. Only to get a phone call weeks later that he better step up because Violet is pregnant.
Together they navigate the waters of his past, and their future together.
I'm a sucker for a girl taming the "bad boy". I love the softer yet still "dangerous" man he becomes.
Tropes: cowboy romance, age gap (10 years), accidental pregnancy, forced proximity/roommates, small town, virgin female, a little spice
When two Maisey Yates worlds collide, a treat is in store for all! Fans of Yates will be delighted to take a trip back to an old favorite, Copper Ridge, in book two of her latest Four Corners Ranch series. Once angsty teen Violet Donnelly is all grown up and hooking up with Wolf Garrett when he comes to visit his cousins. I loved seeing Violet and her family again and watching her fall in love was heartwarming.
Wolf is a kindhearted man, but he's set in his ways of never getting sucked into losing his heart to a woman capable of leaving him and crushing his soul.
Violet is sweet, sincere and enjoying the family she has around her when temptation like she's never known before comes knocking.
I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series to anyone that enjoys a small town cowboy romance with endearing characters, sweetly passionate love stories and lots of drama to sink your teeth into.
This was just okay for me. After reading a number of books by Yates, I'm beginning to feel like her characters are a different version of the same character. She's a twenty-something virgin and he's 10+ years older. I know this isn't all of her books, but the last few I read had this formula (including the short story in this book). So that off the bat lessened my opinion of this book. On top of that, it felt like there was a lot of exposition, a lot of the characters going over how they were feeling and why this or that wouldn't work and it seemed like the same things being repeated. I wanted there to be something else going on in the story. It also didn't really feel like a Christmas story. I wanted a little more seasonal happenings besides a few mentions of Christmas. In the end it just felt like an accidental pregnancy between two people with Mommy issues.
