1356. Burnt Candlemas. King Edward III invades Scotland in the dead of winter to punish the Scots for their recent attack on Berwick. When the fleet bringing supplies for his army is scattered by a storm, it seems God himself is punishing the English for the arson of a Scottish church. Wrongly blamed for the fire, archer Martin Kemp finds himself in chains, a victim of the king’s wrath. As the army retreats to England, it is ambushed by the Scots in the whiteout of a blizzard. Kemp is cut off with a handful of men, desperate to find their way home from a bleak and hostile land. But the knight who takes command of this motley band has an agenda of his own, one that will put all of their lives in jeopardy… An enthralling historical adventure, full of intrigue and suspense, perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Conn Iggulden and Matthew Harffy.

Never felt so cold reading a book! After a prolonged war in France Edward III decides to invade Scotland in the depths. Not only is he facing angry Scots but a harsh winter and an army with no interest. Up comes Kemp who is falsely accused of a heinous crime. Faced with a pompous Sir Archibald, a dithering king, rebellious recruits and horrendous weather, he must face duplicity, apathy and ignorance to achieve freedom and a return to England
Great series set in the 14 th century. Follows the ups and downs of an English archer from the midlands and his rise to fame and downfall but like all heroes always seems to get out of the trouble he is in.
Great research and insight into the life of the ordinary person in the Hundred Years War
A thoroughly enjoyable series to date but this episode gets bogged down in the snow and loses the usual pace of the prior storylines. Elements also stretch one's credulity a touch too far. Disappointing.
Probably the best so far in my opinion, a awesome romp around Scotland . Want more of these please Jon . Don't hesitate if I like story's about the English archers
