ADDITIONAL SERIES BY COLIN CONWAY The 509 Crime Stories – fast-paced police procedurals The John Cutler Mysteries –hard-hitting private detective stories The Flip-Flop Detective – light-hearted amateur sleuth mysteries The Cozy Up series – not your grandma’s cozies The Charlie-316 series – political/criminal thrillers
Colin Conway is the creator of the 509 Crime Stories, a series of novels set in Eastern Washington with revolving lead characters. They are standalone tales and can be read in any order.
He also created the Cozy Up series which pushes the envelope of the cozy genre. Libby Klein, author of the Poppy McAllister series, says Cozy Up to Death is “Not your grandma’s cozy.”
Colin co-authored the Charlie-316 series. The first novel in the series, Charlie-316, is a political/crime thriller that has been described as “riveting and compulsively readable,” “the real deal,” and “the ultimate ride-along.”
He served in the U.S. Army and later was an officer of the Spokane Police Department. He's owned a laundromat, invested in a bar, and ran a karate school. Besides writing crime fiction, he is a commercial real estate broker.
Colin lives with his beautiful girlfriend, three wonderful children, and a codependent Vizsla that rules their world.
Cutler’s Chase by Colin Conway The John Cutler Mysteries #2
Back home in Spokane after his last adventure in Seattle, John is working as a bouncer and doing part-time work as hire-worker for an agency. He seems to be putting his time in daily without a real focus or goal for the future. That seems to change a bit when his Peyton is murdered and he decides to find the murderer using the police skills he used to get paid for. Will he find the murderer and in what ways will this new pursuit change him?
What I liked: * John: ex-policeman, bouncer, part-time hire-worker, friend to a few, father, lost…and yet at times very focused. He can go off half-cocked, has a temper, acts before thinking, plays things close to the vest, is protective, and more caring than he appears. * Peyton: neighbor, ex-Marin, widow, lost his wife and daughter in a horrible way, owns a uniquely trained German Shepherd, seemed to be a good man. * Corporal: Peyton’s Germany Shepherd…such a good boy ;) * Erika: co-worker at the bar John is bouncer for, pushy, knows what she wants, likes John, potential love interest…maybe… * Detective Ackerman: seems a good man, professional, perhaps a good influence in the future for John… * That John cared enough about his friend to follow clues he felt might lead to the killer * The plot and how it unfolded * The surprises that were unveiled * The Rosa thread that was rather sad…and yet necessary for the book to work * The thread with Patrick and his mother…Patrick has potential to grow up well * Deacon: intriguing person that John owes a favor * Looking forward to the next book and wondering what direction John will head in book three
What I didn’t like: * The people and situations I was meant not to like AND as I won’t give away secrets will say that there were some rather horrible bad guys in this story
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
In this second book of the John Cutler series, I’m tempted to ask: is John Cutler his own worst enemy? A riveting action-packed mystery, with a surprise ending that I didn’t see coming. And, like all of us, John is inundated with “what ifs”. Conway consistently writes such believable characters that reading his books is a very gratifying experience. As a side note, I really enjoyed the dog that John adopted - it’s got a personality all its own. And you’ll have to read the book to find the answer to the question!
I received this novel from ARC for a review. John Cutler is out to catch the person (or persons) that murdered his friend and when John pursues someone, bodies follow him. John is like e dog with a bone, he doesn't stop until it's done. The writing style of Colin Conway keeps you alert, entertained, and confused. Confused because he always throws in plenty of red herrings! Another winner!
Cutler still lives away from his daughter in another town, playing bouncer and sometime detective to investigate cases important to him. His friend Peyton -former Vietnam Marine is killed and Cutler is determined to find the killer.
He always seems ahead of the investigator but what he finds is not the reason for Peyton's death. The real killer seemed obvious from the start.
This author has so many different series, and I’m reading all of them…..or trying! Each one is different, and they are excellent to read. So many series, so little time!!
John Cutler doesn't give up! I have read three of this series, John Cutler Mysteries, albeit out of order. I have enjoyed them very much. The series has two more books I intend to start immediately.
