Brittany

All my dreams and wants were stolen from me in the blink of an eye.
Awakening in the middle of a nightmare, I realize I'm being sold like an animal to be studied and dissected in the name of science. Tragedy strikes, leaving me abandoned and sick. I am only moments from taking my last breath, when strong arms pull me from the darkness.
I thought it was a blessing that he found me, the green man who had haunted my dreams. I let myself believe, for just one moment, I might find a small piece of happiness in this unknown world. But what is the old saying? ‘Don’t count your chickens until they hatch!’
A blood sucking parasite is eating me alive, literally, and no matter what, I’m not going to survive this horror story. My body is failing me. I beg him to let me go; I just want the pain to stop, but he won’t listen. He holds me down and I struggle weakly against his immense strength, choking as blood fills my lungs, when I can’t fight any more, Death opens its arms and invites me in.

XuL

My harsh, brutal features have deterred all females, no matter the species. I long for companionship and love. Then I find her, my Kismet, the only one made just for me. The one precious thing I would worship above all others. But the fates are cruel, especially to a male like me.
I am being forced to destroy the fragile bond that has formed between us, as I have to make the hardest decision of my life. One that will make me lose her either way. I hold her small, struggling body against me, tears flow down my face as she begs me to stop. My heart is crushed as I watch the light leave her beautiful eyes. Upon her final breath, I vow not even Death will keep what’s mine.

DaR Book one.
XuL book two.
SoL book three.
Raz book four.

Each book can be read alone, but the series is more fun and understandable if read together...Warning, there are some very dark moments in each book, possible triggers for some, so be advised... But, I promise a Happy-Ever-After.

The Orc and the damsel in distress!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜💚💖
Steam: 🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 😠☺️😋😍
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Brittany - she was seventeen years old when she was taken captive by alien creatures then sold at auction to a zoo on an alien planet. Though she wasn’t tortured or cut to pieces like some of the women, she saw it all.

The Hero: XuL - oldest son to DaR of the House of DaR. He is half Orc and though he is considered good looking among other Orcs, the way he looks pretty much scare most of the females he meets on Darvarius. He found himself more than interested in humans when he met his father's female, Kira. So, when Kira told them that another woman named Brittney was also sold at the same auction, XuL says he will go find where she was sold and rescue her.

The Story: Brittany ends up as an exhibit in a bestiary, where an AI tells her she is there to be studied. XuL doesn’t have an easy time finding Brittany and when he finally does, he has to fight his way to her, but he knows she is his Kismet, his fated mate. He is determined to not give up until he saves her.

I love this series so far. I have read the first and fourth books so far and each book is completely different than the one before, so this is great. DaR and his 22 sons are all different species, so it is nice that each book is about a different kind of alien. I liked the fact that everything that happened was completely unexpected. Brittany’s time at the bestiary really surprised me and nothing happened like I thought it would.

This book is told in multiple points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Emily Sutton-Smith and Tor Thom. Tor is one of my favorite narrators with a super deep voice which is great for alien or paranormal romance. Emily has a soft, feminine voice that is very pleasant, and I enjoyed her narration quite a bit.

It’s taken me weeks to get to 55% and that alone tells me to throw in the towel. I stated in my review of the previous book that I couldn’t wait until this one….. I should have waited longer. It’s as if a totally different individual wrote this story from book one.

Most obvious, English colloquialisms mixed with what I call alien “speech patterns”. In Science fiction authors distinguish alien speech with no conjunctions and the flow is either very abrupt or drawn out. Example, “I do not understand the meaning of this phrase you speak, Brittany.” What we get in this story is “I don’t get what you’ve saying, Brit.” “Brit”? Brit” how the heck would an alien know to give pet names.

Although not in this story, another pet peeve of mine, aliens are NOT another ‘race’… they are another SPECIES. Argh.

These are major blunders that distinguish between good and bad alien romance and authors.

3 stars for an excellent story

Loss of 2 is for

1. really bad grammar and editing. Like really bad. This was terrible in comparison to the first. I have so many highlights of all the errors and weird capitalization.

2. The original MMC from book 1 says in this book as he did in the first one that the human females leak from their eyes

But EVERY OTHER ALIEN INCLUDING THE OG MMC ALSO TEARED UP. So FIX YOUR CONTINUITY OR LEAVE OUT SOME OF THE DISTRESSING HUMAN BEHAVIOR TO ALIENS IF YOU CANT REMEMBER IT.

So that with bad editing is definitely a loss of a star for me.

The other loss of a star is it’s not steamy and you have weird aliens and once again no description of the goods. Bam loss of a half star. Then the other half is we have an FMC that’s a kid she is a young 17 and enough time passes that she thinks she has a birthday so it’s all good we will just be fine because “most other girls this age have a baby.” No they don’t. So I definitely can’t deal with that.

But those are the reason I couldn’t give it more than 3 stars. But the story is good. Those are just the things that annoyed me beyond reason

XuL is the second book in the Daverius, House of DAR series, and it is XuL and Brittany's story, and boy does it start with a bang, or should I say a bloody massacre!

I like Sci-fi tales because anything goes, and it's not weird. The world that Jennifer has created is full of modern technology, along with AIs that are more than they seem. What a great and original read! It is heartbreaking, sad, gruesome, loving, and heart-warming, with some fun moments. Yes, there were some tears.

The story is told in multiple POV, which makes the story more immersive. There is action, slaughter, a variety of aliens; some are truly evil, and others are just big teddy bears.

Yes, there are some editing issues, but they don't detract from the story, not enough to be a pain in the arse.

Not your average alien abduction book

I read the first book in this series and was hooked. This alien abduction book is on the darker side but in a wonderful way. It is like the sun peeking through storm clouds. There is ugliness in the universe but also love and light. This author touches on so many emotions. I want to know more about all the characters is this book and others. It is a slow burn romance but the story is so well done that it doesn't need all the sexy times to make this story work. Would highly recommend this series and can not wait for the nexy book in this series.

Xul and Brittany!

This was a great follow up to the first one. Xul is on the hunt for Brittany as soon as he learns of her existence. Lots of action with a smidgen of sexiness too.

Yet again, I have so many conflicting feelings when it comes to this book heck to the series.
It’s all very just sweet and nice and cutesy. It kind of reminds me of an alien version of maybe a Jane Austen novel, there’s a whole lot of cording going on and a whole lot of what if and maybes.
It’s just very sweet.
I do enjoy the characters and the writing is fine, but there’s actually not a whole lot of anything really going on in the books. There’s no major action at all, there are no big conflicts at all, no real sex scenes or romance at all, And this book and the last look a whole lot like each other.
But they are still enjoyable, which is the weird part of it. I guess I’m just gonna continue reading them with an open mind no expectations and just read it for the cute fluff that it is.

If you are squeamish, be warned that there are detailed flashbacks to events described in the previous story. Otherwise, pretty good story on its own and good continuation of the series.

Another great book in this series! XuL picks up right around the time that he sets off on the mission that Kira sends him on in DaR and some of the two stories overlap.

We first met Brittany, the FMC, in DaR’s book. At the time I hadn’t realized how young she was. She’s only 17 at the beginning of this book putting her in the new adult age bracket. Despite this XuL and Brittany are fated mates and their relationship grows quite organically.

good

These are the first book by this author for me. And I have to admit that I enjoy the characters and the world. I will say the first book was hard for me to get through. I’m not a fan of sad beginnings. Some things in life happen and these characters overcome challenges and are amazing. Read if you like strong women and alien hero’s that save them.

Dreams

Brittany remembers a verse her mother once said to her....Everyone experiences their own Hell's in life. You just think yours are worse because they are happening to you. That about sums up her feelings for the moment as she reflects on her ordeals for the past few days after her abduction from Earth. From watching women being tortured and mutilated, sold in an auction, finding herself as a lab specimen, but the worst is finding out an alien equivalent of a giant tapeworm is inside your body devouring you. She's travelled so many miles away from Earth to finally find the man ( um, alien) of her dreams, only to die . Well that just sucks, worse...she'll die as a virgin.
Xul is envious of the relationship between his father and his human companion. He wants someone to look at him with the same adoration instead of the looks of horror he receives from other females he approaches. When he learns of the other human abducted along with his father's mate, he decides to search for her. He's surprised to find his body reacting to her scent. He thought it was just a legend... but she's his mate, his kismet. Only he was injured trying to get to her. When he recovers from his injuries he finds her covered in blood , her body emaciated. She has somehow injested a deadly larvae that's slowly killing her.
So many dreams seemingly shattered in an instant of haste.

Admittedly, Cute… ish

My first feelings for this while reading was “this was written by a 12yo”.

My second as I skimmed and read was “Wow, this is taking forever.”

But my last thought and the reason this has 2 stars at all is bc the Epilogue was so cute I had to concede and give it a little more credit then what I thought it actually deserved.

Other than those thoughts some others were:
it was long winded, the writing was… well. 😐 And I hardly call what happened in this all was romance.

Their whole story together was stupidly easy. The girl immediately likes him no matter what and the guy can’t help but be obsessed bc of the mate bond. I’m not saying that type of thing isn’t common or wrong in romance type reads but for this it seemed silly bc she’s supposed to be suffering from trauma and she is SIGNIFICANTLY younger than the other woman- 17, she is 17, and her mind doesn’t seem to fracture, she doesn’t seem to have any major breakdowns or revelations. Nothing. She’s not even offended and wary of the other aliens she meets after experiencing first hand what the banana aliens are like. So this was just, kinda junky all together. Pretty cover tho 💗

I’m beginning to wonder if I was wrong about giving the first book in this series 4 stars because this was terrible.

FMC is 17 years old and no justification of “it’s been 80 years since she was abducted” is enough to make this ok. Chronologically that much time has passed but she was in cryostasis and still has the brain of a 17 year old.

She’s also weirdly ok with all the trauma that happens to her and those around her including a girl getting her jaw ripped off and being infected herself with an Alien style chest burster and dying. Don’t get me started on how they claim to try to kill that parasite by drowning her as that would drown the parasite. Like somehow drowning her for 2 minutes would fill her entire torso with water so there was nowhere for the parasite to go.

Then there are the grammatical errors and the downright bizarre fact of the aliens speaking English slang terms one minute and being confused by them the next.

I am going to read the next one in the series just to see if this was an aberration but I’m beginning to think maybe I misrated book 1 as this writing is more garbage.

A treasure of a book!

Xul continues the story of the house of DaR. Brittany is kidnapped by aliens and eventually placed in a place (prison for her) where they are researching exotic and near extinct species. Xul fears he is too ugly for a female of his own, but when he hears about the human female Brittany he begins searching for her hoping that if she gets to know him she'll tolerate him. But when he finds her, he realizes she is his Kismet, his fated mate. Theirs is not an easy path to happiness and they suffer through Brittany's illness and alien kidnapping attempts. In the end, their love for each other prevails and Brittany learns that when once she thought she had lost everything, she has now gained everything on an alien planet. A great read!

A beautiful story for XuL

This is book two of the series and continues from book one. DaR’s son XuL has gone on a mission to find Brittany, who was a female held in captivity with his mate Kira. XuL doesn’t believe he will ever have a mate because he is green and not as attractive as his brothers SoL and RaZ. It’s great that all the characters are present and add to the story. I really adore SAGE. She is the best AI. Brittany is accidentally sold to a collector of rare species, which is slightly better than what master jerk that she was headed. The storyline is interesting because it’s a twist on the regular alien to human romance, which is a plus. It’s a wild ride but a beautiful romance for Mistress Brittany and General XuL. Read On!

Some somewhat vague spoilers ahead...

The main FMC is a very young/sheltered 17 yr old. Shes abducted, abused, witness to graphic and horrific murders of other young girls by alien monsters, kept in a zoo, told she will be murdered when they have more use for her, becomes horrifically ill, almost dies... and her love interest is at least middle aged with long years in the military.
Her love interest is an obsessive, overly dramatic, self-flagelating yet somehow still self- entitled creep.
At least she turns 18 before they do the deed, I guess.
Dialog is dramatic and unlikely.
Spice is both uncomfortable to read, knowing how young she is (not just in age), rushed and with poor wording choices.

Not for me

This book feels more like a continuation of Kira's story so much so she even has more dialogue and more effort was put into rounding her character. At 48% Britt has just been written as a wishy washy character who day dreams a lot. She's stuck there dying but her ordeal only get but a page?? Add in Xul's brothers and their sub stories this book reads as a filler for the next, which is disappointing.

Britt and Xul are one dimensional and frankly bland. I lost interest in all their stories expect maybe Sol. Will trust my judgement here and skip the rest of the series, why name a book after one character then write about them as an afterthought.

Kismet to the orc like alien

Love the world Darverius created here, and I have to say I enjoyed book 2 more than book 1. XuL is an orc like species who's never lived on his "home" planet so he has insecurities about his appearance and thinks he's ugly. Brittany has a helluva welcome into this new life after abduction and a good chunk of the story revolves around her survival. There were a few dips in pacing that had me put down the book, but I'm glad I stuck it out for the relationship payoff at 86 percent! Who are we kidding, I love this world too much to not want to know more about all of their lives! Definitely give this series a go!

Favorite Quotes:
"You can’t hide her from the world. She would only come to hate you for your insecurities. Jealousy is a poison. It will destroy all that is beautiful if you allow it."

“You really want me? Because if we do this… I will never let you go.”
“Just the words I wanted to hear, big guy, now prove it.”

“Open your eyes, love, let me bask in the sight of you falling apart in my arms.”

*I leave my star ratings with my main profile, but I like to add quotes and stuff on my author profile!
Definitely give it a read! Warning: this book is not a steamy alien romance, it is a slow-burn, feels, kind of romance the sexy time is not until 86%.

Nice

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the first in the series. The author is really good at portraying the characters emotions, especially those that are distinctive between age groups. If you read the first book and compare the FMC of that one to this you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The reactions they have to the situations they’ve been in is similar but so different based on their age and this was aptly described by the author. All around it was a nice read and I’m glad I continued the series because the family dynamic makes me feel all excited and fuzzy inside.

excellent series

This is the second in the House of DaR series. It is filled with a lot of excitement as where the characters will end up. It is not the typical alien abduction story. Brittany was abducted along with many other beings and sold at an auction. XuL has found out about her from meeting another human his father has met and freed from the auction house. Thinking how wonderful these humans have enhanced life XuL goes searching for Brittany. This is their story. I’m looking forward to reading many more in this author’s imaginative version of Alien love stories.

Audiobook (audible) - Brittany has a much easier alien abduction experience given that she was not torn apart by the aliens but instead sold to an AI research facility. XuL upon seeing her recognizes the fated mates between them and rescues her. Brittany has ingested a parasite that’s growing within her so XuL and his second father go to XuL’s mother’s planet to heal Brittany. In the end they are hea with the birth of a healthy baby girl.

Xul and Brittany

I’m already captivated by Dar’s sons and can’t wait to follow each of their journeys as they search for their own mates. Their personalities and dynamics pull you in right from the start.

If I had one small critique, it would be that there’s occasionally a bit too much detail when it comes to descriptions of surroundings or background information. That’s just a personal preference though—I tend to be a bit impatient to get to the heart of the action or emotion, so I find myself skipping over those parts.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am excited for what’s to come in the rest of the series!

Awesome Read

I adored this book, even though it started out pretty gruesome. When Brittney is abducted by aliens in arrest area bathroom and awakes up to see aliens brutalizing other captive females, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to finish. If if starts off this horrific what will happen next I wondered. But then XuL and all his insecurities enters the picture and I knew this book would be different but good. I’m glad I was right and can’t wait for DaR’s other two sons to find their mates.

Nice, but too Tame

This is a book about a 17 year old female who is abducted from Earth. As such, it is written mostly platonically. (After all, we can't have 17 year old virgins desirous of sex with much older aliens, can we?) I liked the self-depreciation aspect of Xul and how Brittany overlooked what he deemed were his deficiencies. I gave it three stars because it was not very interesting. It was trite. There was not much intrigue. I would not go as far as boring, but it leaned in that direction.

This was way better than I expected it to be. I liked the first book fine, but I wasn't sure if the series would be worth reading. Well, I liked this one. There is a lot going on, and I can't be sure why they didn't just ...remove... the parasite from her instead of going through all the hullabaloo, but it still worked for me and helped me to believe in the developing romance. I will probably try the next book, but the warning says it's really dark, so I'm not sure. But I really like Sol, so I might give it a try.
