In Search of Madness rebirths Hughes’ renowned Choice Cuts—a classic, out-of-print collection of diabolical proportions—and turns it on its blending old tales with new.
Hughes, having scoured the very bowels of hell itself—aka the indie writing scene—discovered a fellow ink-slinger with a mind as warped as his and borrowed their talents to co-write the fistful of dark, twisted tales of grand perversion found within these pages.
In Search of Madness presents a mammoth tomb of off-the-wall the human psyche and condition are probed within this substantial anthology, the dark corners of the disturbed brain explored, and it boasts a powerful mix, a witch’s brew, of unapologetic evil…
David Owain Hughes is a word-slinger of horror and crime fiction, who grew up on trashy b-movies from the age of five which helped rapidly instil in him a vivid imagination. He’s had multiple short stories published in various online magazines and anthologies, along with articles, reviews and interviews. He’s written for This Is Horror, Blood Magazine, and Horror Geeks Magazine.
Hughes is the author of six horror novels, four short story collections and a plethora of novellas. Although he predominately writes within the bracket of horror and its multiple sub-genres, he’s recently branched out into crime fiction and is slowly carving out a superb series of crime/noir thrillers under the umbrella title of South Wales.
In Search of Madness is a collection by David Owain Hughes that consists of three parts. The first are short stories, my favourites being Bastard Bunny, Horny Dead Fucks and The Patriotic Prowler.
In Bastard Bunny, dress a man up in a ridiculous rabbit costume, push him over the edge, and see what happens.
Horny Dead Fucks is a sexy, gore soaked story that portrays zombies, well, rather differently than you’d expect.
Patriotic Prowler is another sexy story full of gore and revenge. It’s a standalone, but takes place in the Wind-Up Toys universe, and I encourage you to check those out!
The next section, titled Drabbles, consists of one page shorts that give you just enough, but not too much. They are fun, often with unexpected endings.
Choice cuts contains stories longer than Drabbles but shorter than the first section. They are too short to give a synopsis without giving the stories away, but some of my favourites include Bank Holiday, One More Night, and Level 13A.
Overall this was a great collection that will please a broad range of readers, from those craving extreme to more mainstream horror fans. Even though the stories are short, David does a great job of character creation and world building.
I’ll be reading more of the Wind-Up Toys books soon, I expect them to be savage, sexy and gory. Just what I like!
I love a good anthology and this one was nothing short of absolutely disgusting, but in a good way.
The book starts off with a banger of a story! Really gross and disturbing. It's broken down into sections. There are 10 stories in the beginning. My favorites being: -Bastard Bunny -Cadair Idris -The Patriotic Prowler -Milked -The Covert Kinkster and the Embryonic Eunuch -The Winner is.....?
My favorite section of the book is labeled Drabbles. Short little quips that pack a punch. I really enjoyed all of them, Fight or Flight being one of my favorites. Others being: -VHS: The Future of Home Entertainment in the 22nd Century -Donor -The Invitation
The last section of the book is called Choice Cuts. My favorites: -Bank Holiday -One More Night -Date Night -Brain Decay -Diet
Overall, this is a fantastic sampling of what this author brings to the table in terms of horror. I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed by this collection, and you should definitely check out his other works. I received this book free from the author for an honest review.
