Morgan Greene grew up in Wales, and works a copywriter, editor, and author. Morgan studied Creative Writing and English Literature at Swansea University with a focus on narrative structure and theory, and published the first crime novel in the Jamie Johansson series in 2020. Since its release, the series has gone on to reach bestseller status, with Detective Jamie Johansson quickly becoming a reader favourite.
The series blends classic Scandi-noir elements with modern and cinematic thriller writing to create a unique style that adds to the emerging Brit-noir genre. Jamie has many novels ahead of her, but Morgan is also working on a variety of other projects across crime, thriller, and mystery and plans to publish plenty more in 2022 and beyond.
This author has me Completely hooked and living to investigate beside Jamie Johansson in her latest thrilling case in a small town in Sweden. Jamie has settled in Kurrajakk, hoping for a little peace and quiet in a town not known for much crime. After a few months with only her Boss bothering her, Evil finds a way into the town by way of the death of boy, found battered and tortured in the woods, bringing an old legend to light and nothing will be the same. Unfortunately as Jamie starts to take control of the crime scene, she finds her Boss does not believe she is up to the job and another detective is on the way. Jamie is a character I love, a strong, independent woman who looks life in the eye and refuses to put up with anything from anybody, a heck of a cop with a dedication to her work that not many can relate to. So she sets out investigating her way, and anyone coming to help will have to get in line or work with her! The town gets on edge quickly, as this legend,'The King Of Crows', spurs people into a panic as they do not see the police making much headway. The dead boy had small digs into his skin all over, with crow feathers all around and a whole crow shoved deep into his mouth, asphyxiating him. The action, wild scenes and dedication and bickering of the cops working together keep you intrigued, turning pages quickly as you feel you are right there with everything happening in Sweden. A story told by a master, that you just can not put down until you have finished every word. A 5 STAR thriller that will have you looking for more cases for Jamie Johansson to tackle! I received an ARC from the author, who thank for such an amazing adventure, and I offer you my honest thoughts and feelings in this review.
First and foremost, a large thank you to Morgan Greene for providing me with a copy of this novel, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Always eager to read the newest piece by Morgan Greene, I rushed to settle down with his latest Detective Jamie Johansson novel. Moving the series along, Greene spins another great crime thriller in rural Sweden, where Johansson finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. Having settled in Kurrajakk, Detective Jamie Johansson hopes the peace and quiet of a town not known for crime will suit her better. All is fine for months, but the discovery of a boy in the woods turns into a horrific murder and Johansson’s dream is shattered. With a new partner who does not know the area, Johansson will have to acclimate to his ways, as well as trying to solve a case that has stirred up old folklore for the residents. A sensational thriller by a master of the genre!
After a great deal of chaos, Detective Jamie Johansson was happy to make the move to Kurrajakk, a small community in northern Sweden. She’s been working in the community for four months with little more than having to handle minor disturbances. However, all that changes one morning when the body of a teenage boy is located in the woods. He’s been sliced multiple times and has a crow shoved down his throat. This is surely not the work of your typical killer after a skirmish.
Johnasson’s superior is set to retire and does not trust that she can do this alone, so he brings in a pompous detective to help with the investigation. While Kurrajakk may be a small town, Johansson is not yet ready to share policing duties with someone else, though Kjell Thorsen has other plans. He’s heard much about Jamie Johansson and her work, knowing that she puts a violent spin on things, which may not work so well in a rural community. Still, they work together as best they can to crack the case wide open.
After some initial inquiries, Johansson and Thorsen discover that the victim was not quite as docile as some of would believe. Felix Nordahl was running quite the pill business in town and keeping teens supplied, much to the chagrin of their parents. Many have a beef with him, though no one’s yet surfaced as a prime suspect.
Norahl’s death has stirred up some old folklore about Kråkornas Kung, the King of Crows. This is an old legend that has the locals all in a tizzy. As Johansson and Thorsen try to weave their way through truths and myths, appearances of the King of Crows around town adds to the confusion of the investigation. There is surely a drug angle here, though it is not becoming overly apparent to any involved.
As the town begins to riot over the return of Kråkornas Kung and how inept the police appear to be in finding a killer, Johansson and Thorsen will have to provide them wrong. It is sure to be a case unlike anything either of them has ever seen, with a killer lurking in the shadows and waiting to strike again. Another brilliant piece that kept me up we’ll into the night. Morgan Greene knows what he’s doing and takes the readers on a stunning adventure.
Since discovering the work of Morgan Greene, I have not been able to stop reading anything with Jamie Johansson. The writing is strong and the storytelling never ceases to amaze me. I am always shocked to see the angles and perspectives that emerge from the books and find myself pining for the next novel as soon as I complete the latest. Greene has released a schedule of upcoming pieces, which has me excited for 2022, distractingly me from another winter of calamity when it comes to pandemics.
Jamie Johansson has surely transformed herself over the last handful of novels, working her way up the ranks and being challenged at every step. Her grittiness is something like no other and she has made a name for herself in the policing community, both in England and, more recently, in Sweden. Her dedication to the job is like no other, though she takes little guff from anyone, preferring to get the job done and enjoy some time for herself. There is much that she discovers about herself, some of it not entirely to her liking, in this piece, which is sure too impress the reader.
Morgan Greene has a way with his writing that pulls the reader in from the opening pages and does not let go until the final paragraph. His mix of great crime thrillers, Scandinavian settings, and strong characters make the books alluring to anyone who takes the time to read them. The narrative is strong and pushes forward with each passing chapter. The plot thickens and takes turns that keep things interesting throughout, adding folklore and educational moments to add depth for the reader. More recently, the peppering of Swedish into the text gives it even more plausibility, being set in rural Sweden, and makes it an enjoyable piece for me. With a handful of upcoming releases in 2022, I know I will be busy and surrounding myself with great reading experiences. I just hope others discover Morgan Greene as well.
Kudos, Mr. Greene, for another winner. Jamie Johansson is such a rising star and i cannot wait to see what’s to come!
That was some freaky shit! This is the fourth DI Jamie Johansson book since she moved back to Sweden. After the drama of the Angel Maker case (book 1) and bringing down all the corrupt police and officials (books 2 and 3) Jamie is looking for a quieter life and has moved north to the small town of Kurrajack. The police force there consists of her boss, Stig Ohlin, who never seems to be around, an assistant called Minna who is as dumb as a box of rocks and knows nothing beyond answering the phone and Jamie herself. That’s fine, it’s not as if anything ever happens here - until it does!
The body of 17 year old Felix Nordahl is found in forest clearing, splayed over a tree stump, little wounds all over his body and a crow stuffed down his throat! As I said, freaky. The locals are talking about the King of the Crows being back 😱! Here I am thinking “not another scary bird book”, but yes. Then Ohlin tells Jamie her new partner will be arriving soon. Partner? Jamie doesn’t do partners well. Soon Kjell Thorsten, the aforementioned partner, rocks up and tries to take over but Jamie soon sets him straight.
The crows around Kurrajakk are behaving very strangely and massing in large numbers. One night they start hurling themselves at Jamie’s windows. The investigation is not proceeding well as everyone seems to be hiding things but Jamie and Thorsten have at least concurred that there is or was a drug ring operating in the town and that it had some part to play in Felix’s death. The pair have settled down into some sort of working partnership. One adorable new character is Hati - a former, curmudgeonly fighting dog that had outlived his usefulness and had been abandoned, injured by the side of the road. Jamie took him in, and while his manners are not great he is a reliable guard dog which proves to very useful.
Other than that nothing is as it seems. Witnesses are hard to pin down, the crows are freaking everybody out and Jamie starts to doubt her own sanity when she sees the ‘crow king’ outside her window one night and gives chase but ends up shooting at shadows and becomes very disoriented. What fuckery is this?
As with all of Morgan Greene’s books the pace never lets up. He puts his characters through the wringer and this case also screws with their heads in a big way. You will not guess what the whole Crow King thing is about but it is a shocking ending and it may be continued in a future story.
Yay, another Jamie book!!! In this one, our dearly beloved detective is enjoying the good small town life in Kurrajakk...until a teenage boy ends up dead and it's up to Jamie to solve his murder.
Jamie Johansson books are always so good, and this one is no exception.
I love small town settings, bonus points for spooky small towns, and Kurrajakk is just that. Everyone knows everyone so when a bizarre murder happens they all flock to the police to pressure them to solve it and I love that.
There's a supernatural tinge to Death Chorus, and some mythology woven in which makes the whole thing even better. Is the King of Crows real or just a legend? You'll have to read to find out.
Wiik and Hallberg both made cameos, the latter more so and I'm happy, but I also want to see them working together again. And when I say want, what I really mean is need. I NEED the trio back together ASAP, I miss them.
With that said, I like Thorsen too. He's like Wiik, and not like Wiik at the same time and his banter with Jamie made me laugh several times.
Now the epilogue...IT'S GOOD AND I'M ANGRY BECAUSE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT??? I NEED TO KNOW. So unfair. It would be cool to see the aftermath a few books down the line, or maybe a bit in each future book? I can hope.
Book three is still my favourite out of the four, but this one is a strong contender for second place.
*Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*
This is the fourth book to feature Jamie Johansson and what a cracking read. Once I started reading I could not put this book down. Hence I finally turned the last page at 2.am. Yes this book is that good. It can be read as a stand alone but I am sure that once you have read this book you will be searching out the rest of this gripping and very addictive series. Packed to the rafters with tension and suspense with so many layers and misdirection. Definitely got my heart racing and with an ending that blew me away. So highly recommended and definitely a MUST READ!!!!!
Jamie has moved to a quiet town after her last few cases have taken it out of her physically and emotionally. Unfortunately after just 4 months, a young boy is found murdered, a crown stuffed down his throat. Jamie is on the case, much to the chagrin of her superior officer, who doesn't trust her, and sticks her with another officer to make sure she doesn't mess it up. The story that follows is fast and furious, seeming to find few clues along the way, just more questions. It has the small town vibe, more secrets and cover ups than you can imagine. The banter between Jamie and her partner Thorsen is brilliant. It provides a lot of funny and light hearted moments. Unlike Wiik, her old partner, Thorsen won't take her rubbish, and will call her out in her shitty, miserable or rude behaviour. Something Jamie is really not used to. Throughout the book there is a really menacing atmosphere linked to the presence of crows. The writer has really nailed this, their presence and their absence both have a really sinister tone. As someone who grew up being aware of, and freaked out by Hitchcocks The Birds, this book nails that absolutely. The chapters, and sentences are short but powerful I read this book in one sitting, as the one more chapter turned into 3 then 10, until I'd finished. I love, and love seeing her character develop in each book. It felt like this time out she was more human, a little softer. I absolutely adored Thorsen, who was patient, cheeky, sarcastic, but a gentleman and smart. I'm glad Hallberg got a few cameo appearances after really coming into her own in the previous book. This is technically the 8th Jamie book, but can easily be read as a standalone. It is left where hopefully this new chapter will continue for Jamie, Thorsen and maybe even Wiik. A truly emerging and underappreciated author, Morgan is really growing and improving and is not one to be missed.
This author is fast becoming on of my favourite writers. This is the 4th in the DI Johansson series although it is easily read as a stand-alone. What a fabulous story this is, plenty of red herrings and I didn’t guess the perpetrator until the author wanted me to. A dark and sinister tale, brilliantly written, and it definitely reminded me of a scene in Hitchcock’s The Birds; I for one would happily avoid a murder of crows heading my way.
Briefly, after a number of harrowing cases Jamie has moved to a quiet town in the hope of restoring her equilibrium. However, four months in she is presented with the case of a teenage boy brutally mutilated and suffocated by having a crow forced down his throat. Jamie is also given a new partner, Thorsen, and although initially they don’t get on they are soon working together to find the ‘King of the Crows’.
Much as I loved Jamie’s previous partner I really loved the new one. There was a genuine camaraderie building between them despite Jamie’s way of never getting close to anyone. You can see her visibly softening under Thorsen’s gaze! There are numerous other great new characters introduced, all of them a bit ‘different’ but all eminently readable. This whole book was a pleasure from start to finish. And sad to finish it I was. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I think the cover is eye catching more so than previous books.
This is a Jamie standalone so a perfect place to jump in if you haven’t read any of the others. This one is the best to date for me. I loved it. It has a slightly different style to it, which I really like, but die hard fans will still very much recognise Jamie.
Jamie Johansson has transferred to Kurrajakk the arse end of no where for a quiet life. During the move She’s acquired a psycho stray dog called Hati.
In the small town her boss Ohlin is brusque, lazy, misogynistic and doesn’t trust her at all so has employed a new partner for her. His name is Thorsen, he is totally dismissive seeing Jamie as a big city cop who couldn’t hack the stress. We also meet the acerbic and curmudgeonly Coroner Vardeman. Minna is something else, nice but dim. I sometimes feel a bit sorry for her as she is way out of her depth.
A teenage boy is discovered dead in the forest, with it looking like a ritualistic killing. It’s got a great creepy feel to it, and incorporates some Nordic folklore. Some of Jamie’s retorts had me chuckling. There is one scene where I disagreed with what Jamie did
It’s my favourite of the Jamie books, great use of Nordic folklore and a brilliant creepiness throughout. Some good twists and turns. I highly recommend this book.
Firstly I'd like to thank Morgan for an advanced copy of this book. My favourite Jamie book was Rising Tide and I thought nothing could beat it until I read this. Deliciously dark and creepy Death Chorus is a brilliant, fast paced psychological thriller that kept me gripped until the very last page, I absolutely devoured it! I would thoroughly recommend this book, well done Morgan, looking forward to the next one 😊
What a fabulous book. It's the 4th in the DI Jamie Johansson series but you could read it as a standalone. I absolutely loved it and I think this is my favourite of the series so far.
After the events of the last book, Jamie is in a new role as a police officer in a remote village where nothing ever happens until the discovery of a teenage boy's body. Her boss is regularly nowhere to be found but yet decides that Jamie is incapable of solving this on her own even before she starts, and lumbers her with a partner from elsewhere.
Jamie is still suffering after the events of the previous book and has somehow adopted a very strange and aggressive dog, which adds a bit of humour to everything.
The bleakness of the surroundings is quite vivid, as is the small town and the nature of such a town including it's inhabitants and their quirky ways. The addition of Norse folklore is excellent and totally adds to the overall atmosphere of the book. There is a lot of creepiness in this tale also and evokes many memories of the movie The Birds. The cover is also very striking and certainly catches the eye.
I can't wait until the next book in the series and highly recommend this.
Morgan Greene takes Jamie Johansson and pits her with a new hire, Detective Thorsen and dislikes him when she meets him. They have a boss Ohlin, who was always absent. What they have to find out was why this boy of seventeen was killed out in the woods with crows beaks on his skin everywhere. Why was he there, and who killed him, what is his name, and why all the crow bites. Jamie drives off and gets called by Minna who answers only the phone. Telling her Christian Nordahl called her and said his boy was missing. What we learn is that Jamie has a three legged dog that she found and is taking care of it (including getting bitten). People are interesting at what they do and she finds that Thorsen likes playing with the dog. All these things are secondary the real reason the boys dead and they find the reason in what they find at his house. Drugs and money. This falls into place and they go to find the King of Crows. In his barn they find a suit of crow heads and Jamie feels it, then several hours latter she sees this crow king and runs after him. The story goes on from there and has several turns. In the Jamie finds the real killer but can she bring them to justice. You'll have to read it to find out and it a real interesting read too boot.
Really good read. Nice pace, clever story arcs and fulfilling finale. Could maybe have done with a bit more of protagonist doing mundane things… the dog is interesting/funny, would have been nice to know a bit more etc. But hey a great book. Congrats to Author for getting up with the ‘big guns’ in the best seller lists. On a personal note to them, I’ve read extensively all the authors you mentioned, I don’t think you have to ‘look up’ to their work, your words have spoken and many have read and enjoyed, so I hope there’s a lot more to come. And P.S all those authors have released classic reads but equally the occasional absolutely awful book (Except Angela Marsons who’s output seems uniformly good). Looking forward to the next book.
I really loved this instalment - the author taking a deeper and darker delve into small town goings on and Jamie realising small town doesn’t always mean the quiet life. Quite the opposite in this case! We meet Thorsen - who looks set to be Jamie’s latest partner…he might live to regret that!
Honestly love being pulled into every one of the DI Jamie Johansson books but since I started on Angel Maker have been piling through so Quiet Wolf is downloaded and ready to start with Ice Queen pre-ordered and I keep promising myself to read the trilogy before Angel Maker but so far haven’t made it back yet!
Jamie Johansson is a firecracker with so much baggage, but she's endearing, feisty, funny and just fab! I'd love to be able to fight like her! I'm on my 5th Jamie Johansson. My husband introduced me to Morgan Greene on holiday last month and I've literally devoured each book.
I love the way Morgan Green grabs your attention on the first page (that's always a 'make or break' one for me, if I don't get it right away I'll go back to the book when I'm in a different frame of mind) but Morgan draws you in so quickly you have to keep reading to find out the how's, why's and who.... Jamie is brilliant and so are her partners and the people she has in her life. I'd say friends, but that's a strong word for JJ.
I'm reading book 5 now (I won't tell you the name, look it up, have a peek... you'll get drawn in too).
These Jamie Johansson books are great; this is the 4th in the series but reads well as a standalone. At the end of the last book, Jamie moved to a quieter town as she had been through the mill a bit (understatement) both personally & professionally. It is now a few months on & she finds herself investigating the horrific murder of a teenage boy who has had a crow forced down his throat. New town means new partner for Jamie & her self-protection barriers are slowly worn down by Thorsen. They make a great team. Loved it. Best yet in my opinion & I can’t wait for book 5. Highly recommended.
What a great thriller! The author really has a talent for creepy setrings! Beautiful descriptions of Sweden landscapes. Jamie's character is cleverly developing and has definitely become one of my favourite fiction investigators! She is here looking into the murder of a teenager... A lot of action, its fast speed plot make this thriller a compulsive read! Thank you so much, Morgan, for sending me a digital copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review! I can't wait for the next novel involving Jamie!
I like the main character, Jamie. She is now in a remote small town, has a new boss, new partner, and lives alone with an unpredictable three-legged dog. The murder mystery is a strange one (to say the least) but a well written and crafted storyline with high levels of suspense, The new characters didn't do much for me. I'll happy follow Jamie in this series and hope the small town escape is a temporary one that allows Jamie a re-set before taking on bigger tasks.
Firstly I would like to thank Morgan for sending me a ARC Copy of this book. Morgan just keeps getting better and better. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down until i had finished reading it. I have read all of Morgan's books to date and they are all amazing books each and every one of them. I throughly enjoyed reading this book so thank you once again for the ARC Copy of your book much appreciated by me.
Such a layered and complex crime thriller with PHENOMENAL characters; especially Jamie!!!:-). Loved experiencing the blurring of reality through her eyes as she rushes to find the strange truth in this gorgeous and haunting setting!!:-). Being drawn in so close to decipher the psychological motives of the crimes and perpetrators made this one captivating and pulls you right in!!:-). LOVED IT!!:-)
After the first books by this author , I found this tale to be a little far fetched . The ending was left in the air , another thing that I , personally don’t appreciate . In all , the book was a disappointment after the previous good reads ….I expected better .
I think I've mentioned previously our heroine, Jamie, is a bit hard to take.
this one had some good characters, a good story line, and I never figured out who dided it.
They are a bit twisty turny, and a bit impetuous rather than logical police procedurals, but fun reads and I'm glad I got these four so cheap. Maybe not the rest...
In the beginning I felt so sorry for Jamie in this little backwards town where nothing happens! Not for long....things got creepy and crazy in true Jamie fashion. I really like her new partner and am hoping he sticks around for awhile. I'm totally looking forward to starting Quiet Wolf in about 5 minutes! :)
Five stars for this book have read all the books 📚 and found the story line so interesting sometimes hard to follow but also worth noting that you had to keep going to the end to appreciate the whole picture 😊
What a great read. This book keeps you on edge from start to finish. The only issue is lack of sleep when you can't put the book down. Looking forward to the next one.
Bad things seem to follow Jamie. Our in the middle of nowhere and a murder to deal with which is anything but run of the mill. How do these the bag happen all the the time
I got pulled into this book and found that I enjoyed reading it even though I'm not really into psychological thrillers, I'm more a crime novel type of person, and I'd say that this book lies in the border between the two, an enjoyable read all the same.
Don't get me wrong there are things that are useful for book 3 but you don't need any for book 4 Wow!!! Read book one, I was blown away then book 2 was a little slow but then three and four have just got better and better
It was ok, but I did not find it as good as the previous ones. Jamie was not as incisive and sure of herself, and the plot was a bit too removed from reality. Hopefully in the next one assuming there is one, she will be leaving the one moose town and linking up more with her old colleagues.
