Although there have been hundreds of books, and research works on the elephants and their family life, not one of them have come close to capturing the matriarchal elephant family system from the elephant's view. The author is able to put together various aspects of elephant biology, matriarchal complexity along with landscape changes with the human settlements and development leading to the Human-Elephant conflict in the Nilgiris. He works on the Vultures in the same landscape and had published a book "Valley of hope: Moyar and Vultures", which was well received

Very interesting, thought provoking book which truly changes one's perspective towards elephants! A must read!
