After twenty-one years of being overshadowed by her ex-husband, Winnie Hackleshack never had the opportunity to explore her adventurous side. But what does a forty-something divorced woman do to revitalize her spirit? She gets a rescue dog, buys a motorhome, and sets off for adventures unknown. Except the adventures include getting mixed up in a murder investigation.
Arriving at Yellowstone, Winnie anticipated bubbling geysers, buffalo, and scenic views. But on her first night there, she befriends a young woman being bullied, and when the young woman is found dead the next morning, with Winnie’s business card, Winnie finds herself looking for clues to solve the woman’s death.
The clues lead her to an illegal gold mine, and when the killers suspect Winnie stole their mined gold, they come after her. But Winnie’s not backing down. With the killers on the loose, it’s up to Winnie to find them before they get away.
PRAISE FOR NO STONE UNTURNED AND NEW FAVORITE CHARACTER WINNIE HACKLESHACK“Entertaining story featuring a delightful amateur-sleuth heroine, a fun cast of characters, and a plot that keeps twisting to the very end—plus a dog anyone would want for their own.”—MIKE KRENTZ, AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR OF DEAD ALREADY AND ANGELS FALLING“I loved visiting Yellowstone National Park with Winnie Hackleshack. This humorous, fast-paced murder mystery series is off to a great start. It's well-written and edited with engaging characters and plenty of twists. I highly recommend hopping aboard the motor home with Winnie and author M.S. Peke.”—CHRISTINE DESMET, AUTHOR, FUDGE SHOP MYSTERY SERIES AND MISCHIEF IN MOONSTONE SERIES“No Stone Unturned is a delightful debut from M.S. Peke. . . . we are treated to glorious descriptions of Yellowstone, one of the most beautiful landmarks in America. . . . a wonderful cast of characters, including a sympathetic park ranger, a professor of linguistics who has a thing for Winnie’s mom, and a group of seemingly friendly hikers, M.S. Peke has created a new subgenre, the travel cozy. It's fun, fast-paced, and features a protagonist you can enjoy rooting for. And now I want to book a trip to Yellowstone!”—JIM CANGANY, AUTHOR OF THE ALLIE COBB AND DARCY GAUGHAN MYSTERIES“If whodunnit murder mysteries are your jam, No Stone Unturned is right up your alley. . . . an intriguing plot filled with suspense, thrills, and mysteries to deliver a strong entry to what promises to be an entertaining sleuth/mystery series. The narrative moves at a blistering pace, with unexpected twists and turns that keep you guessing about what's to come in the following pages. I recommend No Stone Unturned to anyone who enjoys sleuth stories or murder mysteries.”—PIKASHO DEKA FOR READERS’ FAVORITE
What a wonderful start to a new series! I would love to hit the road and visit all the national parks but I hate the idea of giving up convenient mail service. I enjoyed visiting with Winnie and Patches as well as getting to know the people they meet at Yellowstone. The mystery was interesting and well-paced. I can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series.
A fun start to the series. Starting over and traveling. It’s more towards the mystery than cozy mystery and I really enjoyed the diversity of character. A solid 4
No Stone Unturned is a delightful debut from M.S. Peke. Recently divorced protagonist Winnie Hackleshack and her faithful canine companion Patches decide to spend some vacation time in Yellowstone National Park. Her life is turned upside down when a young woman Winnie has just met is found murdered. With the murder apparently on her trail, too, Winnie relies on her experience as a reporter to get to the bottom of the case. Along the way, we are treated to glorious descriptions of Yellowstone, one of the most beautiful landmarks in America. Will Winnie unravel the mystery before she's removed from the scene is this the end of the road for her? With a wonderful cast of characters, including a sympathetic park ranger, a professor of linguistics who has a thing for Winnie's mom, and a group of seemingly friendly hikers, M.S. Peke has created a new subgenre, the travel cozy. It's fun, fast-paced, and features a protagonist you can enjoy rooting for. And now I want to book a trip to Yellowstone!
Entertaining cozy mystery featuring a delightful amateur-sleuth heroine, a fun cast of characters, and a plot that keeps twisting to the very end -- plus a dog anyone would want for their own. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
DNF I was hoping this book would have more atmospheric vibes, Yellowstone is one of my favorite places and this just doesn't even go into much detail. It's a very formulaic whodunnit.
Winnie (aka Winona) Hackleshack is a freelance reporter, recently divorced, 40 years old, and needs to completely get free from things that are weighing on her. She buys a motor home—a Winnebago christened Winnie, of course— a rescue dog (Patches) and sets out to see the country. She starts out with Yellowstone Park as her first stop. On her first night there, she meets a young woman who is a summer seasonal worker for the Lodge who is being bullied by her supervisor. The next day Winnie is awoken by the Park Police to question why the young woman had her business card in her pocket. Soon the reporter in Winnie is soon asking questions.
This is the first tittle in a new cozy mystery series titled “A Happy Camper Mystery.” The book features a pleasant heroine who is filled with good intentions. The dog, Patches, is an adorable addition to the cast of the book. The mystery was rather mundane. As far as the sense of place, the description of Yellowstone Park is vivid, forms a location that is going to be essential to the storyline. So in summary, beautiful scenery, perky protagonist, I’ll-take-him-home dog companion, interesting vehicles, so-so plot combine to form a good read. Recommend to readers who enjoy cozy mysteries.
Positives When I stopped to check on some of the details about Yellowstone, I discovered they were all true. Sometimes going down a rabbit hole can be very educational.
Meh Just about everything else. The quality of writing was elementary; frequently compound sentences weren't even constructed accurately. Those Yellowstone facts were inserted with all the subtlety of a high school text book, which is probably where they came from. The main character was bland, the mystery seemed secondary to lots of eating and making instant new best friends (as if you should trust all these strangers in the midst of a murder investigation?), and even the dog was boring - he wagged, sauntered (overused verb), or seemed to know his owner's thoughts on almost every page.
Wow. No Stone Unturned is a real page-turner. I finished it in one day because I couldn’t wait to see if Winnie would make it out of her predicament alive. From the moment Winnie’s new friend gets murdered to a notebook written in code, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Never a dull moment when Winnie is around. If you’ve never been to Yellowstone, the details M.S. Peke (aka Mike) uses to describe the fantastic scenery will bring it to life, and you will want to visit yourself. I’ve signed up for the newsletter because I don’t want to miss the release of his next book, Frozen in Death. I can’t wait.
Didn't enjoy this book at all. Seemed like a lot of filler of silly dialogue and descriptions. Might not have helped that the narrator did a horrible job with the different voices. Pushed through to finish. Sorry to say...I don't like giving less than good reviews but I appreciate when others do.
Winnie, her Winnebago, Mini, and her pup Patches escape the confines of a bad marriage to explore the country and find adventure. Unfortunately misfortune crosses her path when a young woman is found murdered and Winnie becomes involved with the case. A light, easy read, but a little too cutesy for me with Winnie’s Winnebago and Winnie’s Mini… but not so cutesy that I won't read the next one!
I read the second book first and came back and read this one. I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what other adventures Winnie and Patches will have next!
This is a fast-paced, interesting storyline with a rambunctious dog to help carry this storyline. You have believable characters and many exciting twists and turns. This is a must read!
Fantastic cozy mystery! New author for me & I really enjoyed his writing voice. The murder mystery has a few surprises. Very relatable characters, also. I recommend.
