Lady Felicity Quick #2

Murder at a Country House

Rate this book
Langton Manor is a traditional British country estate, with a vast lake, a grand ballroom, a retinue of servants … and a murder or two!

England, 1921. When journalist Lady Felicity Quick arrives at Langton Manor to find her guaranteed-to-be-dull interview with Lord Langton has been cancelled, Felicity is rather relieved — until she learns the reason is murder.

Trapped at the remote country house as thick fog descends, and surrounded by Lord Langton’s charming yet troubled relatives, who seem more concerned with personal dramas than the untimely death, Felicity can’t help theorising about who might be behind the crime.

But when the safety of someone she cares about is threatened, Felicity can sit by no longer. With the killer still at Langton Manor, and the police unable to reach them, can Felicity use her investigative skills to unravel the mystery and prevent further carnage?

If you love puzzling country house murders set in the old-fashioned elegance of 1920s England, then you will love this cozy mystery series! For fans of Agatha Christie, Downton Abbey, Lee Strauss, and Benedict Brown. Get your copy today!

Rosie Hunt is a British author of cozy mysteries both puzzling and historical. Her books include the Lady Felicity Quick mystery series set in the green and pleasant countryside of southwest England in the 1920s.

A history addict and former journalist, Rosie grew up immersed in the worlds of Poirot and Miss Marple. This early exposure to baffling murder mysteries rather coloured her outlook on life, and it was only a matter of time before she wrote her own.

Rosie loves clotted cream, knitting, and Golden Age crime fiction and never misses an opportunity to visit a National Trust property. She lives with her husband and their fluffy, four-pawed overlord on a river in Northern Europe.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this cozy murder mystery set in England in the 1920s. The protagonist, Lady Felicity Quick,, tackles the challenges of being in the family business (the newspaper business) and being taken seriously as a reporter with determination and charm She’s really good at what she does and much of the story revolves around her evolving relationship with colleagues and boss (her brother, Jasper).

Sometimes locating a murder mystery in a setting that isolates the key characters (this time it's a thick fog) can result in an almost predictable rollout of a plot. This is not the case with this story. It is cleverly thought through and is both intriguing and entertaining.

Special mention needs to be made of the cast of furbabies as they play important roles in the overall plot and add greatly to the entertainment value. I look forward to hearing more about Pip as the series moves forward.

Murder at Afternoon Tea (a Novella) and Murder on the Village Green are also great reads and I recommend reading all three in this most enjoyable cozy murder mystery series. I’m so looking forward to the next one! Great job.

With thanks to the author, Rosie Hunt for my free advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Rosie Hunt writes a wonderful cozy mystery story in this book, the second book of the Felicity Quick Series. I had the pleasure of talking to the author on email after joining her newsletter group. It was so nice that she took the time to write me back a personal email that was not computer generated. I found the book to be enjoyable and funny and a great cozy mystery! Keep up the good work Ms Hunt! I am looking forward to reading more of the adventures of Felicity Quick!

Murder at a Country House by Rosie Hunt is basically a locked room mystery taking place at a country house where Lady Felicity Quick has arrived with her Yorkie, Pip, to interview Lord Langton and his nephew, Quinton, who was his heir apparent as far as the business was concerned, given that his son, Derek had no interest or aptitude for it. It was not her favorite kind of story: she wanted to report on crime, but it was better than nothing so Jasper, her editor and brother, allowed it. Who should get out of the car with Derek and his lady friend, but, Alex Cooper, her rival reporter, and one that was missing from the day-to-day operating newspaper, greatly concerning her brother. More concerning was that Lord Langton's secretary reported that Lord Langton and his mastiff were nowhere to be found, and his valet was dead on the bathroom floor. So much for Jasper's admonition that she stay out of trouble and she could not leave as there had settled in a heavy fog.

She and Alex became partners as they knew no one else. There was no sign of a struggle and so many people had tramped through the bedroom/bathrooom that clues were likely lost. The constables could not get to the house because of the fog, so there they were. Despite Jasper's admonitions, Felicity's natural curiosity had her exploring and investigating. She had nothing else to do. Shortly a young man arrived, on foot, claiming to be Lord Langton's lawyer. He had walked from his far as the fog was too heavy to drive. That just added a complication to the whole situation. Also adding complications were the need for Pip and the other small dogs to relieve themselves out of doors, where they promptly ran off. It all seemed very complicated when the fact was that they murder was solved in a few hours. More complicated was what Jasper would say when she returned. A terrific mystery with complicated and interesting characters. I love stories from the 1920's: the world is on the cusp of change.

I must confess that I did not read the first book in the Lady Felicity Quick mystery series by Rosie Hunt. So, when I was given an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review I was nervous. I thought the second book might reveal spoilers. There was no need for my concern. This installment in the series is a fantastic stand-alone mystery that lightly references, but does not reveal, any of the story from the first book. In fact, Ms. Hunt has cleverly carried over the history of the main characters in such a way that have peaked my curiosity. I fully intend on purchasing the first book while I wait salivating for the third installment, Murder at the Tea Rooms, which can be pre-ordered on Amazon now. Yes, salivating like I would for a fresh pot of Earl Gray tea and warm scones studded with currents and slathered with Devonshire cream and curd. Ms. Hunt gives me everything I want in a British Manor cozy mystery and so much more! That is not to say that the writing was predictable, as I was kept guessing until the very end. In fact, there are times when the plot seemed predictable, and I thought I had everything figured out but then a twist or turn was suavely delivered by the author and I was proven wrong. If you enjoy reading a cozy mystery that contains an aristocratic lady sleuth who defies typical convention with her pursuit of a career in journalism, a furry sidekick, a luxurious manor house, a dense debilitating fog that cuts the residents off from all possible official assistance, and a house filled full of potential villains, then this is the book for you. You won't be disappointed!

Enjoyable tale but unlikable main character

The story was entertaining but I just don't like Lady Felicity! She is so up herself! She thinks, at,21, she knows everything! She wants to be equal to male journalists but she has never had to earn a penny in her life! She refuses to admit it but journalism is a hobby, not a job!She thinks she is ever so clever by getting the solicitor to let her look at the will under the pretext of looking at the format! It is ludicrous! She also annoys me the way she always carries her dog,Pip, and he runs off constantly! Surely a collar and lead could be used when visiting other people's manors! The author uses the tactic of Pip running off to try to create drama but it is so unrealistic! Also in this story Mollie, the mastiff, is barking and trying to get Felicity and Alex or anyone to follow her, supposedly to lead them to her injured master,Lord Langton. However, when she and Alex follow the dog,it turns out the lord is actually in hiding from his family and staff after an attempt on his life! So why would the author have the dog lead them to her master if he wasn't injured but actually in hiding? It makes absolutely no sense, other than suit the author's narrative! The dog would not be attracting anyone's attention! I have read two in the series but thats enough for me.

Lady Felicity is a professional reporter on a newspaper owned by her family. Her brother, has forbidden her from covering any type of dangerous story. In the past, she has been known to get herself in dangerous situations. There will be no more of that, she has been assigned to do an interview with a wealthy business man who is leaving his business to a nephew and this interview will be very much about business only.
Plans can be unexpectedly changed.
Felicity is in the house a short time when a dead body has been found. So much for a simple business meeting.
This story includes a large number of characters, which means a large number of suspects.
The atmosphere is from the early 20th century. (There are quite a few ideas about women’s place in the world and how unfair things are.)
The plot is well developed and the characters are complete. I would have liked an actual conclusion to some of the individual stories.
What is really going on with Frida? Is Ursula really interested in staying in England?
I enjoyed the book, and I look forward to reading another book by this author. Another is already on my Kindle.

Lady Felicity is in the thick of it ...

... even when Jasper thought he'd sent her on a harmless business reporting assignment.

Torn between her love of true journalism and not wanting to be in Jasper's bad graces - again - Felicity finds herself stuck. Turning up at Langton Manor to interview the Lord and the newly annointed heir to his business empire, she arrives to find, instead, Lord Langton's valet murdered and the peer himself nowhere to be found.

Hunt sets an eerie scene with fog closing all avenues away from - and into - the estate and a possible killer on the loose. Though she tries, Lady Felicity can't help herself but to investigate.

An engaging read with our by now favourite characters on hand - I love Pip - and some intriguing newcomers too. I read it in one sitting on a gloomy and rainy afternoon; the perfect backdrop!

Book 2 in the Lady Felicity Quick mystery series, an I thoroughly enjoyed it! It’s set in the 1920’s post-war era, and Jasper, Felicity’s brother, is the editor of the paper. He has finally agreed to allow Felicity to write slightly more serious articles, and has asked her to do an interview with Lord Langton at Langton Manor, about the transfer of his business portfolio to his nephew Oswald Ridgeway. Jasper warns her to stay away from Lord Langton’s son, Derek, apparently considered a “bad lot”, and the reason the business portfolio is going to Oswald. But when Felicity arrives, there are delays, which turn out to be a murder, a missing Lord Langton, and a pea-soup fog that strands everyone and prevents the constabulary from arriving. Great characters who are fun to get to know and an intriguing plot that’s not easy to puzzle out will keep you interested until the very end! I received a free copy of this book from the author and write this review voluntarily.

While I'm usually more of an 1800s reader, I am loving these cozy mysteries in the 1920s. The era is fun. The mystery plot in this was not terribly obvious from the beginning. As a matter of fact, I had to revise my theories for what happened more than once. And there were so many possibilities for who the villain might be that I didn't really figure it out until the reveal.
I like Lady Felicity but found myself annoyed that she listened so much to her brother. I understood why but I would rather see her defy him and jump right in on a case. I also liked Alex but my expectations for him didn't play out like I'd hoped either. But, spoilers, so I shall not continue on that route.
I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next one where Lady Felicity may be able to move forward with more ease.

Felicity has achieved her dream of becoming a full time reporter, however it’s not quite as glamorous or exciting as she anticipated. Her brother has assigned her stories that are dull to say the least. However she is determined to do the best job she can so when assigned an interview about a local lord and his business interests off she goes. Things go a bit astray when the lord disappears, his valet is found dead and a dangerous fog rolls in off the moors. Felicity is trapped on the premises despite her best efforts to leave graciously.
Reading through this could’ve easily been a Sherlock Holmes case or one written by Agatha Christie. Superbly planned out, endlessly entertaining and an absolute must read!
I received an ARC from the author. This review reflects my honest opinion.

Murder at a Country House is utterly charming and clever. I was completely stumped for the entirety. The story takes place over the course of one day but so much happens in that time frame. Lady Felicity wants to investigate the murder but she must do so in a way that won't worry her brother. Alex has got his own story to write but they pair up again to find out what happened. Their friendship is rather sweet and I'm looking forward to reading how it progresses as the series moves on.
I really love mysteries set in this time period and the author does an excellent job of recreating that world for the reader to become immersed. An excellent read with an all round great cast of characters. I loved it.

I know it's early in this series but I am loving it and I hope it continues for a long while. This time Felicity is off to interview Lord Langton but finds herself stuck there due to heavy fog. At the same time, Lord Langton and his dog have disappeared and his new valet is found murdered.

I love the descriptions of everything connected to this era and I really enjoy the characters of Felicity and now Alex and their burgeoning relationship, professional and potentially personal in the future. I found myself totally drawn into the scenes as they unfolded. I particularly liked the ending as it opens the door for loads of future investigations, without giving away any spoilers.

Rosie Hunt has crafted a great cozy mystery set in 1920s England. Although this is the second book in the Lady Felicity Quick series, there is not mention of the previous story or spoilers given. Lady Felicity Quick is trying to make a name for herself in the journalism field, however finds herself in the midst of a mystery. The setting of an English Country House with fog settling in, was perfect for an ominous feel. I found myself pulled into the mystery, trying to solve with the different clues along the way. I am not a very good detective but I still have fun trying. Thank you to Rosie Hunt for an advanced copy of this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own!

A Quiet Interview ? Really?

Another fascinating read from Rosie Hunt in this new mystery! With Lady Felicity in attendance, we can be sure of meeting fascinating characters. some we may find likeable, others frustrating, and others can make us laugh. There will be those too, who will enrage us. As we read, the descriptions of location make them visible in our imagination, and we become totally involved in the unfolding drama. Our judgement of the people and their actions changes as we learn more of their backgrounds and their actions.
This an absorbing and enjoyable mystery and I look forward to the next book I what should be a long series.

nice, cozy mystery to curl up with

This is the second (prequel novella aside) in the adventures of Lady Felicity, news reporter extrodinaire. Once can certainly read this as a stand alone, but why miss the fun of the first meeting of Alex and Felicity? There are several interesting characters, a presumed murder, and unfortunately a very unruly dog. I do like this book but I could do without Pip. Or at least, the story could do without Pip -- the dog puts Felicity in a rather poor light. Some of Felicity's reactions to the dog's behavior don't sound like what a smart and savvy Lady would do.

I absolutely loved Book 1 in the Lady Felicity series. But, something happened to "Cici" between books 1 and 2. In Book 1, she is a feisty, independent heroine with a flair for fashion. In Book 2, she is eternally terrified of getting in trouble with her brother/boss and desperately tries everything she can to not get involved in the guy dropping dead. It takes until SEVENTY-SEVEN PERCENT of my Kindle copy before she declares that she "could no longer ignore her desire to unravel the mystery at Langton Manor." That lasted way too long and was already very annoying by 40 percent.
I hope her spine grows back by Book 3.

This is the 2nd book in the Lady Felicity Quick Mystery series and it's a fun read. I've quickly grown to love the characters in this series. Cici (Felicity) is fearless and adventurous. She's also whip smart and causes complete and total chaos as far as her older brother is concerned. This book is well written and moves at a fast pace. The secondary characters were interesting, and it was fun to figure out the mystery. I received an ARC of this book and I'm voluntarily providing an honest review.

the stories are getting better. With this story, I felt Lady Felicity was taking too much of a back seat to Alex. She wants to prove to Lord Jasper, her brother, that she can be trusted to be a crime reporter and that means she is taking large steps to avoid getting mixed up in anything. Of course, that is not what happens in the book. I'm glad to see that she was more involved in solving the case towards the last quarter of the book.

Missing Lord, dead Valet, dysfunctional family, greed, drugs, and missing wills.

Nice short read

Murder at a Country House Book 2 of Lady Felicity Quick Mysteries

Fog surround a country house of a important lord in this book. A death, a disappearance of the Lord brings Lady Felicity and Alex together as the two reporters encounter, the opium trade, management of an estate and a birthday celebration with a foggy confrontation and Lady Felicity's Yorkie Pip befriend a black Pom named Charlotte and Mastiff named Mollie. Lady Felicity can't help herself when it comes to murder and the journalists need to get the news out at her own risk.

I enjoyed this book. It is better than good. The two main characters are moving along splendidly, revealing more of themselves and their capabilities, the plot is straightforward with that hint of mystery inherent in the best of mysteries, and the premise is finding out how the valet was killed, who killed him and why, as well as finding out where the Lord disappeared to and why. I most definitely recommend this book.

A mystery with all the charm and wit of the Golden Age, writen with elegance.
Lady Felicity is an intriguing heroine, but the real strenght of the story is found in the setting and array of characters, with all their vices, created skilfully by Rosie Hunt.
Definitely a treat for lovers of 1920s historical mysteries!

Excellent writing!

This second installment of Lady Felicity Quick’s adventures is just as compelling as the first. Having established the characters well in the first book allowed the author to explore their personalities further without going into a lot of backstory. This is a very satisfying read, and I hope there will be a third book.

lady Felicity still longs to be a full fledged report, including crime. However her brother see a different path for her and sends her of on a "safe" assignment. Murder, and a family in turmoil, not to mention fog so thick that everyone is isolated from the outside world. Off we go on a roller coaster ride to catch a killer.

Enjoyable cozy mystery that kept me guessing until the end! Lady Felicity is a sympathetic character, and I liked that she wasn’t blindly rushing into situations as cozy sleuths so often do.
