Full disclosure, I received an advanced copy in return for an honest review, but this will be easy because The Write Balance is one of the most helpful writing books I’ve read in the past year. I heartily recommend this book.
I appreciated how Bonni Goldberg echoed and supported my own thoughts about my writing life while also challenging me to examine those thoughts and many of my processes. I saw my Writing Self reflected in Goldberg’s process and I genuinely enjoyed the anecdotes, metaphors and exercises she provides at each of the three levels of the writing process she outlined, percolation, revision and going public. I feel I’ll be able to improve my relationship with my Writing Self as I work through the exercises that speak to me, and I look forward to learning from this book for years to come.
I think this book would benefit anyone who writes, and I liked it so much, I plan on gifting it to the members of my writing group. If we’d had access to Goldberg’s wisdom, especially around percolation and going public, we would have saved ourselves so much worry and angst. We could have avoided many of the struggles we’ve had with accepting our processes and our relationship with publishing if we’d had access to The Write Balance. If you write or know someone who does, this book should be on their shelf.

Most of the books I´ve read and reviewed aimed at offering inspiration and guidance to writers do have some very general common lines of advice. First and foremost, one has to keep writing no matter what, maintain a healthy balance between writing and documentation, being persistent and refusing to give up in fulfilling his or her gift of wordsmithing. Personally, I think that at least most of those advices are right. On the other hand, though, treating writing like any kind of work may be misleading sometimes. Discipline and time management are indeed vital for building a successful writing career, any kind of career in fact, but sometimes there is something else left behind in this list of recommendations.

The Write Balance by Jewish educator, author, speaker and coach Bonni Goldberg adds a very spiritual holistic touch to the general literature about how to write better, faster, insightfully etc. It is aimed at helping and explaining ´How to Embrace Percolation, Revision&Going Public´. Each of these steps are very important and are approached in the book on a very serious and detailed manner.

I´ve found that these three stages are rarely followed in sync in the dedicated literature on this topic, but after seeing those mentioned for the first time, I realized that in fact those stages are very important in shaping the book: first, one needs to consider the process of creation before the first draft takes shape (percolation); second - what the writer shall do after the first draft is ready (revision); third - how to follow the right strategy to share his or her book with the world (going public). Is there anything else that really matters? Don´t think so.

Each of this stages is explained by Bonni Goldberg through various personal examples but in a way that offers a generous space to build the right balance between the body and the mind (including through recommendations of exercises to practice in this direction). Cloud watching when you are out of inspiration or just putting on hold for a day your writing plans belong to those kind of advices one may refuse to consider seriously but in fact are so simple and inspiring.

Goldberg´s book accompanies the reader and eventually writer-in-the making with a lot of care and dedication. Therefore, The Write Balance can be considered a good companion to first-time writers, but also a source of inspiration for more experienced onces. After all, book after book, one may need to refine his or her skills and writing techniques as well as habits. This book is generous in nourishing creativity, including through specific exercises - including of the yoga type.

The Write Balance is a resource of spiritual strength when writing does not go in the direction one may expect, but also helps to overcome (self-)doubts and writer´s block with the grace of someone who knows that he or she has a mission that will be fulfilled with diligence and distinction no matter how hard it is. You just have to look at the clouds and follow their changing shapes. Similarly, your words can get together in an infinite number of ways to create your books, one after the other.

Disclaimer: Book offered as part of a book tour, but the opinions are, as usual, my own

Bonni Goldberg’s The Write Balance introduces the reader (and writer) to alternative perspectives and motivation for lasting creative fulfillment. While most nonfiction books on writing address the craft of storytelling, provide editing guidelines and technicalities of publishing, The Write Balance offers a refreshing take on these subjects and more. Goldberg helps us connect with our writing selves, identify our purpose for writing, and define what makes us writers. The book is filled with words of encouragement, practical tools, helpful examples and exercises to inculcate a healthy writing lifestyle.

Through years of teaching writing in workshops and in classrooms, Goldberg has found that the writers who are most passionate and grounded in their Writing Self embrace three aspects of the writing process: nurturing ideas, revising to best communicate those ideas, and completing the writing cycle by going public. Here, she invites us to explore these creative stages which are essential to a satisfying writing journey.

The topics she covers help to find fulfillment as a writer, explore creative writing, add to the writer’s toolkit, overcome writer’s block, and inspire writing groups. As a reader, the book is engaging and informative, educational without being preachy, understandable with real life examples, hypothetical situations, and exercises to put the learnings into practice. As a writer, I like how she covers several crucial topics, from percolating ideas to drafting and re-writing, until the final stages of seeking literary agents, publishers and reaching readers.

The Write Balance is a well-written book from an experienced author, with important lessons and skills to keep dipping into. It’s worth more than a one-time read, and an essential guide to those interested in writing.

Believe it or not, The Write Balance is the first book I’ve read on the process of writing. I’m just not that sort of person who thinks, ‘I want to do something, so I’ll read and research it first before I try.’ For writing, I just started writing and have made all the mistakes along the way:)

As such, The Write Balance was a great read. I recognised many of the scenarios mentioned in the book and quickly came to understand that Bonni Goldberg’s intent for much of the book was to teach the body to accept that writing, revision etc was going to take place and to be receptive to it – essentially, making the process physical as opposed to just mental. And I can really see how this would work. All writers make pacts with themselves about their expectations and targets. It’s how we go about meeting these expectations and reaching our targets which is often the hardest element. We need to train ourselves to accept the processes, and there will be many different ways of doing this and the author makes some very valid suggestions.

I defy any writer to not find themselves in one or many of the scenarios, and I do believe that writers will find answers throughout the book, and if not answers, then certainly a means of finding a solution.

A genuinely interesting read that fellow writers and would-be writers will find an invaluable resource, even if they only dip in and out of it when looking for solutions, the knowledge that everyone suffers similar issues and when seeking a cheerleader who wants you to succeed.

I was granted complimentary access to The Write Balance by Bonni Goldberg as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

As with any writing advice sort of non-fiction title reviewed on Westveil Publishing, I do so for selfish reasons. I want all the advice! Goldberg's advice is refreshingly against the grain in a way that feels very validating of writers who approach writing the way I always have. I know, I know, I don't have any full-length novels floating around out there in the world of published work yet, plenty would tell me I've embraced percolation to my detriment, but this book has tips and tricks for making this method actually work and eventually lead to following through with your goals. If like me you've never been a sit down and wrestle an outline into existence then follow it sort, nor a start writing and a brilliant 90k best seller will appear sort, then the process in this book just might be the missing in between you've been looking for. If you, like me, are the I'm going to plan this book in the shower and as I fall asleep for the next 6 months sort, this is the advice you need to go from a bunch of disjointed shower thoughts with a plot arch to promoting your finished and published novel.

The Write Balance is not a how to write book or a regular craft book. It's about self-reflection when it comes to your writing, examining what is holding you back, and helping you with practical advice and exercises to break down those barriers.

The author knows her stuff as both a writer and teacher and it really shone through while I was reading.

It's split into three sections; Percolation (the process before the first draft takes shape, Revision (the writer's role after you've finished your first draft and Going public (a writer's mission once the manuscript is done).

I found the Percolation section particularly helpful. I'm one of those people who comes up with a new idea, gets excited about it and starts writing without really exploring the idea in full, which is probably one reason why I never finish anything!

The style of writing is laid back and conversational, without condescension or judgement. I honestly felt a bit like I'd been for a therapy session for my writing after reading it!

It's also the perfect book to dip in and out of when you need it.

The Write Balance is like having your own writing coach, packed with positivity and encouragement, perfect if you're a beginner or if you're just feeling burnout or fed up with your writing.

I will now have to pick up a copy of Bonni Goldberg's other book Room to Write!

I've been writing for the better part of a decade, but am still working on finding the process that works for me. The Write Balance was an immensely helpful book for getting from ideation to finished product. So many writing books focus on just getting the words out or hitting a specific word count each day. While that advice is helpful for some, I found myself feeling guilty when I was doing other writing work like going for long walks to think about things (percolating), seeking out new experiences that didn't have anything to do with writing (more percolating) or going through numerous re-writes until I really found the core of the story instead of just getting words down.

Bonni's book has helped me put name to some of the steps I was already doing but felt guilty about, and also gave me a ton of new ideas for how to refine and embrace the process, while also balancing the other parts of my life and recognizing how non-writing activities can lead to better writing.

The author has a lot of experience writing and teaching writing so I felt in good hands!

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ways to build a sustainable writing practice.

Thank you, Rachels Random Resources, for a gifted copy of this book and an honest and voluntary review. All opinions are my own.

Are you a writer suffering from self-doubt, imposter syndrome or feeling overwhelmed with your writing desires? If so, this is a must-read!

The Write Balance is an informative, educational and must-read for any writer. It is more than a workbook that is filled cover to cover with writing activities, motivation, and inspiration for creativity. However, regardless of the category, you can not deny that sections like; "nurturing ideas, revising to best communicate those ideas, and completing the writing cycle by going public" will benefit all.

This book has given me a massive boost in my writing and confidence. It has played a part in helping me get over that writer's block that creeps up on any writer and the pressure I was unaware I had been unnecessarily putting on myself. I have set realistic deadlines as I work towards my writing goals. Bonni's writing style felt more like a friendly chat than it did reading a book, and I will certainly be referring to this in the future. A highly recommended resource without any hesitation!

Bonni Goldberg’s The Write Balance provides the writer with inspiration and insights no matter where they are on their writing journey. Goldberg’s own background in dance, visual arts, poetry, and prose provide a fresh approach to all the facets of using words to create. I found many helpful suggestions to overcome fear in my own writing practice and to accept that—no matter where one is in the scheme of writing, whether just starting out or seeking publication—there are new ways to approach getting our words out. I especially liked Goldberg’s approaches to revision and going public. Bonni Goldberg’s The Write Balance is a volume I will keep close and return to again and again. I received an advanced copy in return for an honest review.

I was literally amazed by this book. It is so thoughtful, so thought-provoking and definitely has something for everyone as it explores different approaches to the obstacles in an aspiring writer or author's life. I am definitely going to put this book on our Reading List for writers, new and seasoned. Do check it out! I have a lot of experience and yet so much of it resonated with me, too! I was highlighting so many helpful passages. So this is a great book for writers of all levels. Enjoy this writer aid. Lynne Marie

Bonnie Goldberg’s “The Write Balance” is an excellent choice for would-be authors who are facing self-doubt about their commitment and creative abilities. What I appreciated most about this book was Goldberg’s common-sense approach to the ups and downs of a typical writing life. Her ideas and exercises will provide an antidote for “imposter syndrome” as well as a process to incorporate writing into an already-full and busy life. I received an advanced copy in return for an honest review.

What a different take on writing. Bonni Goldberg shares her experiences and tips not just on writing, but also on being a writer. You can read this book from start to finish, but you can also read the segments most tied to where you are in any writing project. Try her exercises, too. She thinks the link between body and mind is important to the creative process. I recommend it for writers in any phase of their creative journey.

This book is a really good resource for writers. The author really helps aspiring or established authors look behind their writing processes. She does this by explaining what she has found to be the most useful ways for her to hone her craft.

As someone who writes occasionally I found her advice useful and insightful and it really spurred me onto to creating more written work.

While I received an advanced copy for an honest review, I can honestly say this book is very helpful for writers across the spectrum of their journey, and I look forward to using this book as I work on current projects and future ones.

Right from the start, Bonni’s introduction provides some wonderful ideas for deep introspection. The words, “Cultivate a nourishing writing life” really spoke to me as I find self-care needs to play a greater role in my own writing life. (I am going to write those on my whiteboard to see when I enter my office every day.) Balance is key in everything, especially during creative processes, such as writing. How many writers have trouble saying “I’m a writer” even to themselves? Well, I am finding it much easier to do now.

Write Balance does a fantastic job of addressing the frequently overlooked percolation stage of writing. Not often do craft books go into the process of what to do and how to address the stage of, well, percolating. There is this whole stage that we have before we even start putting words on paper, and that is a key part of the process which Bonni talks about so well here. Writers of all styles (plotter, pantser, discovery writer) can find inspiration in pondering before sitting down to write.

This book is very accessible to writers of all levels. Bonni has created a book where you will find helpful tips, tools, and inspiration from the first day you have an idea to the last day when you finally “go public” with your story. Definitely a book to pick up for yourself or gift to a writer in your life.

I received an Advanced Copy in exchange for an honest review.

Folks, if you're a writer, or a creator of any type, this is such a great resource to have! I have read dozens of writing books, but none were as insightful as Bonni's ideas, especially (at least for me) percolation and going public.

The author provides a plethora of exercises for the reader to try out. I especially loved the exercises for overcoming obstacles we experience during the revision process, as I'm currently in this phase of my book project. But don't let the title fool you, this book is for more than *just* writers. I found myself sharing some insights with my artist husband as we navigate how he wants to share his art with the world.

I'm thrilled to have had the chance to read this book before it officially released. The information is a game-changer for so many, especially writers, who struggle with procrastination, perfectionism, and our inner critics. If you have something creative inside your soul that is burning to get out, The Write Balance can help you on your journey.
