If you have ever read a book by one of the Robertson clan you will be familiar with the layout of this current book as there are many similarities from book to book. Still I enjoyed getting to know Lisa Robertson a little better, and hearing all the trials she has been through in her life and overcome thanks to a loving Savior. This was mostly a concise book of devotion, encouraging us sisters in Christ to never be ashamed to share the gospel, how even if you don't feel you can because you are a nobody or had a bad past, Jesus wants you to just the same. Jesus wants you just the same and can forgive ALL sins. All you have to do is pray for Him to save you, admit you are a sinner in need of a Saviour, that you know He made the ultimate sacrifice on the cross for you, and was gloriously resurrected the third day. Ask Him into your heart to live forever, in His name AMEN.
I enjoyed the testimonies shared in this book and the encouragement to become a new person in Christ. It was thoughtful, and thought provoking and I think this would make a good group study book for Women’s Ministry. This book is not too scholarly but is grounded in the Word so if you have a new sister in Christ this also may be a good read for her.
Short sweet and full of scripture, this book is all about how to be there for your people and how to find the people that you are meant to serve and do life with.
This is a review for the book Sister Roar by Kay Robertson and Lisa Robertson, an amazing mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo, and which was recently published. I am giving my honest review for NetGalley, and I am so honored to be reviewing this amazing book by two of my favorite sisters who love the Lord Jesus, and each other, with a passion that is so contagious!
I chose this book because I am big fans of the authors, and their whole Duck Dynasty family, even though I have never met them, but I wasn't prepared for the difference this book was going to make in my life! After reading it, I walked away feeling that Kay and Lisa are my sisters in Christ, and they love me, and wanted to share with all of their sisters some vital things that are so important to women today, many whom have forgotten they have a voice let alone how to use it to roar, especially with what's going on in our world today.
In this book they shared that women are still a sisterhood, and that in Christ, we are a family, and have a voice, and tell us how they are now roaring because they have been healed, redeemed and restored, and they want the same for all their sisters! They share their amazing and truthful stories filled with both pain and joy, and how they were able to get through all the situations they found themselves in. Their stories are real and sometimes painful, but also so filled with hope & redemption, and they tell how God used those situations to restore them personally, their marriages and families, which was done by facing the truth, repentance, love, grace and forgiveness! In my opinion, they are sharing them so that all women can know that there is still hope in the midst of the pain and suffering, and there is freedom and restoration also thru love and forgiveness, and their stories are a reflection of those truths! Kay and Lisa have been through a lot, and really love and care about all their sisters, those they know and those they don't know, and so they want to help any of us women that are struggling today, and writing this book was a way they could do just that!
Personally, this book brought out some things in my life that God wanted to address, heal and restore. Through it He revealed some lies I had been believing, and showed me through the Scriptures they shared, the truth of those lies, and how I could be free of them. I was reminded of how important my relationships with all my sisters (related and not related) are, not just with my friends, but with all women, including my own daughter and daughter-in-law. God has used some dear women to walk alongside me, and now I want to do the same by sharing my story that includes an amazing testimonies of healing and restoration that God has done in my life! I've been a Christian a long time, and am still a work in progress, but realize God wants to use my story for His glory like He did the Sister Roar book!
I really felt like Kay and Lisa came alongside me through this book, shared with me the truth, and pointed me to the One who truly helped them, the Lord Jesus Christ. Through that truth, I was so encouraged, was able to confront some sin in my own life, and fell into the arms of the loving Savior who continues to set me free from the pain and lies that I have experienced! It also inspired me to be courageous, and ask God to give me circumstances where I can share my testimony, and walk alongside those He has placed in my life! I have found my voice y'all!
One last thing, Kay and Lisa shared their stories in this book, but it was not to have me look at them, but to point me to Jesus, who could make me find my voice, and help me to roar again, and then help my sisters whom God has placed in my life to do the same! Oh what joy has filled my heart, mind and soul! So I highly, highly, highly recommend this book, and give it 5 stars out of 5, and will look for opportunities to use my story to point my sisters to the Savior Jesus Christ, who will help heal and restore them, and help them find their own voices, and proclaim sisters, let's roar!!
In Sister Roar, Kay and Lisa Robertson have teamed up to help women reclaim their voice and to embrace sisterhood and to support one another. Like a lion we are created to roar. They begin the book by sharing the story of Phil Robertson and how he founded Duck Commander. He made the legendary duck call. This turned into them obtaining their own TV show on A&E Network entitled, Duck Dynasty. It became the number on reality show for 5 years. This show features all of their family members and offered watchers with a family friendly show. Kay is the wife of Phil Robertson and has a couple of cookbooks. Lisa is the wife of Alan and he’s the oldest and he’s known as the beardless brother.
In the book, Lisa opened up about her past and how our past doesn’t determine our future. Her and Kay have a special place in their hearts about unplanned pregnancies. Both of them became pregnant when they were in their teens. Both of them were unmarried. Lisa chose to have an abortion. The doctor described it as a tissue that was inside her and she reassure her that she could recover from this and move on with her life. She shared how she had to learn with her shame and guilt everyday of her life. She explained how Jesus forgave her and helped to redeem her. This is why they are so big on reaching out to unwed mothers and teach them about the love of Christ. She also wants to help people who had an abortion to forgive themselves and to receive grace. In the book, she also discussed her past with having an affair that did become sexual and how this affected her marriage.
Another big part of the book was the story from Phil’s past. This part of the book is written by a special guest, Phyllis. Readers are probably wondering who this new person in the Robertson is. It started with a DNA test her oldest son did to learn more about his family. It was revealed that Phyllis and her sister didn’t share the same dad. Her mother didn’t confess until pressured and it turned out Phil was her dad. She admitted to not knowing much about the family since she was living in Nicaragua. In the book, we hear from Kay and Lisa’s side of the story and how she met Phil and the family in 2020.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is ready to join the sisterhood and they want to learn to soar together. The messages in this book will encourage readers to learn to lean on others and embracing others. The stories from both ladies really brought the book to life and it was inspiring to read about their life and their personal struggles. This book enclosed your turn section and it included questions and a prayer at the end of each chapter.
This book introduction set me up for great things. I loved the message, “Healthy community will be born when you express your roar and hear the roars of others.” I wanted to understand this roar. I also liked these other quotes:
“We watch in awe when lonesomeness is defeated, replaced with holy sisterhood, and a mighty roar emerges.”
“Maybe your roar will be loud and confident, or it may be soft and sweet, depending on your personality. It might have the sound of spoken words, or maybe it will be expressed in some other way—through what you paint; how you love your family; the way you sing, dance, do people’s taxes, or host a terrific party. Your roar will laugh sometimes and cry like a baby other times. It can comfort, it can correct, and it can communicate healthy choices and boundaries as needed. It will cheer from the stands or speak boldly when you’re standing up for yourself or someone else. Sometimes it will cry out to God in desperation and other times in ecstatic praise. With the passing of years, with God’s grace, your roar will become a trusted source of wisdom, experience, and love for other sisters.”
I thought, how beautiful, so our experiences and interactions, create our roars. Depending on who we are, our roars are expressed differently. Our roar could be expressed in our passions (in painting, the written words or how we’ve raised our families). This piqued my interest. I saw these words as motivators or maybe inspiration for all and maybe an audience of younger women like Miri. So, I expected great things.
The introduction presented a great enticing setup for what was to come. Unfortunately, for me the book really fell short. The way the book was written was confusing. The beginning almost read like a memoir. As the chapters progressed, the self-help questions seemed out of place. I think the questions at the end of the paragraphs could have been placed in an appendix, if the authors really wanted to set this book up as a “how to book on setting up women’s spiritual groups”. The lists also seemed odd, like lists of important things to consider when you set up a group (honesty, flexibility, fierce attitude, consistency and persistent prayer). This felt like a how to book.
I also felt the book had too much redundacies. Trust the readers, if you tell your personal story and provide its impacts, readers will carry that forward without having to repeat the story multiple times.
I also had this overarching question throughout the book, what is the real intent, what’s the real message? Was it evangelism? I had hoped it was more about, accepting your voice and using the experiences to live a life that we model after God's teachings.
I would love the authors to take the introduction and bring the language to life. Speak about the women's voices they have unveiled, uncovered, given back.
Let me start by saying that Sister Roar is not the type of book I would typically reach for, but I enjoy branching out now and then, and this is one of those hidden gems you can discover when you step outside your comfort zone. While this book is primarily geared toward Christian women seeking to find their voice, build friendships, and strengthen their faith, it holds value for anyone looking to cultivate a sense of community, whether by joining or building one.
At its core, Sister Roar is a powerful tool for personal growth, guiding you to find yourself, discover your voice, and achieve peace through faith, all while connecting with like-minded individuals. It’s a compelling reminder that, as women, we should support and uplift one another, working together to build solid and meaningful relationships. The message is one of encouragement, empowerment, and finding inner peace through faith in God, but it also offers insights that anyone, regardless of faith, can appreciate.
Ultimately, this book inspires readers to embrace sisterhood and live authentically in the company of others. If you’re searching for a deeper connection with yourself and those around you, this could be the book you’ve been looking for.
Thank you to NetGalley and Nelson Books | Thomas Nelson for gifting me the e-book ARC of Sister Roar in exchange for my honest review.
out on April 19. 2022. i won it in a Goodreads giveaway. Christian Families. Women's Christian Living. Personal Growth & Christianity. i guess my 2 cent are ...that women learn to encourage one another. i have truly find or found it in my growing up journey that so much of our lives we ladies are kind of against each other ...that we are extremely critical of one another ...when instead we need to lift each other up and encourage each other ... push each other on ...lift up ... cheer on ...give help of emotional support, laughter, laughs, whatever kind of party you wish to join in on ...and help each other ...each of our journeys is so different .... each path ... each walk is so different ...why be jealous? why be unkind ... smile ... give her some companion, some help, a push on to the next step .... help her on up and let her shine and because she shines you know that you help her out ... don't be unkind and thing whatever thoughts ...know we are all in it together and if we help each other know that in the times you need help they will help you out ...and it is a cycle that keep on giving ... keep helping, keep encouraging and so on ...
I won this book through GoodReads First Read program.
I am not a Sister, nor do I identify as a Sister. However, this book is very good and should be read by all Sisters and Brothers also.
Kay and Lisa Robertson open up about their personal lives and how mistakes they made and trouble they faced were, and are, used by God to bring Him glory. Unmarried pregnancy, abortion, affairs, and other sins were used by God to bring good to many through their testimony. God also used the platform of Duck Dynasty, and their connection to it to amplify their message.
The book also promotes small groups for women. Kay created the Muffins and talks about how that group was a blessing for her. I can identify. I hosted a men's group for over 18 years and it was one of the best things that have ever happened to me. Like the Muffins, the Word Warriors lasted for a season and were eventually dissolved due to people moving out of state. I would like to get back into a men's small group. They are fantastic.
I have never watched Duck Dynasty, but I did hear about it. When I started reading the book, it took me a little while to connect the authors to the family. I did enjoy reading the personal testimonies and appreciated the openness of the ladies who wrote this book. And while I found a lot of gems about sisterhood and the beautiful relationship between mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law, I am not sure I like the idea of "the roar". Somehow it seems to go against the beauty of feminine expression that I feel God calls us women to. Not that we should be timid or weak, but for me personally the lion's roar is not a metaphor I found appealing. But all the suggestions for building sisterhood were very useful and I appreciated them.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with the book. It did make me rethink some ideas and I found it useful.
Reading this book was like having an intimate conversation with my closest friends. It conveys a tranquil and empowering message that emboldens women on their quest for authenticity and purpose in life. Brimming with gentle and empathetic guidance, engaging dialogues, and personal anecdotes from both authors, it provides a genuine insight into their journeys as Christian women.
Before winning this book through Goodreads, I had limited knowledge of the Robertson women. Despite having heard of the Duck Dynasty show, I had never actually watched it. However, delving into the pages of this book revealed the profound wisdom embodied by Kay Robertson and Lisa Robertson. They skillfully interweave their life experiences into the narrative, serving as a potent source of inspiration for women seeking honesty, authenticity, and a deeper connection with biblical scripture. Their passionate advocacy encourages women to express their truths, expect to be heard, and live with unwavering integrity, using their past mistakes as valuable teaching moments for their audience.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wholeheartedly recommend it.
I love Sister Roar by Kay and Lisa Robertson! I’m a big fan of the family and appreciate how they do not back down from God’s Truth, no matter what life throws at them. I love the testimonies of Lisa, Kay, and one of the newest members of the Robertson clan, Phylis. I love the story of forgiveness and acceptance from their testimonies. Their testimonies are proof that God truly forgives and redeems and uses all things for good. I praise God and thank God for this book. I highly recommend this book! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.
Sister Roar by Kay Robertson and Lisa N. Robertson, is like sitting and having a conversation with Ms Kay and Lisa. The content is very encouraging for all women who want to live an honest and meaningful life. There is kindly advice, fun conversations, and past experiences by both women. The book is written as each woman speaks her truth from life experiences as a Christian woman. They motivate women to live, speak, and seek truth from biblical scripture. The message of this book is to Speak your voice, Expect to be heard, and Live in honesty. Thank you to NetGalley, the authors, and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
This book was very thought provoking. Typically, these types of books get boring to me or I can only take them in small doses. I actually caught myself not wanting to put it down. Also, I want to start a muffin club, but have no idea how to go about it.
This book is hilarious and thought provoking. It will guide you in ways you didn't know you needed guided. It brought up old pains and helped me think and work through them. It also helped me focus on the future and how to show love. Great read
This was an interesting read. You will get a glimpse into the lives of Kay and Lisa Roberston ... wives of the infamous Duck Dynasty dudes. It serves as a book of encouragement, devotions, and a message of forgiveness. You will learn how much the sense of community and support matter in the lives of women.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a very encouraging read. I loved learning more about the Robertson family while also learning about the importance of community. I knew that community was important but the book really delved deep into how to make it a priority no matter the stage of life you're currently in. The ladies gave examples from their own lives and they asked the reader questions to apply what they learned. I'd recommend it!
I really enjoyed this book. It has some great ideas for gathering with other women, and there is a lot of scripture included. It was interesting to learn more of Lisa's story.
I was part of a church women's group for 10 years before we moved out of state. I miss those Sisters so much. This book has made me realize I need to find/start another group.
I won a free copy of this book as a Goodreads first-reads giveaway.
Amazing how a book just seems to come to you when you need it the most. A very positive book about while chances are we have gone through some tough times we don’t have to carry that as a burden. Give our troubles to the Lord and then we are able to use our darkest of times to bring light to those that are hidden in darkness themselves. I was so thankful that this book reached my hands to renew my faith in the Lord. I look forward to brighter days ahead.
Male, queer, non-Christian, hated Duck Dynasty: I am definitely not the Robertsons' target demographic. And self-help books generally assume that what worked for the author will work for everyone.
I want to give props to the ghost-writer, Ami McDonnell. (Maybe King James, too -- lots of Bible quotes!) The book is well-organized and a quick read. The "Your Turn" questions at the end of each chapter would help in a book discussion or Bible study. Still, just not for me.
A copy of this book was provided free through Goodreads.
It shares tips and encouragement on how to be better sisters to other sisters in Christ. Shares their own personal testimonies and how God turned their struggles and obstacles into redemption stories that other women can benefit from. It gives inspiration to ways you can share Jesus with other people, either it be subtle or bold ways (one on one conversations to big host gatherings) but overall to find your voice "roar" for Christ

Two science problems. Introduction page xix: “All big cats roar — lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, lynx, and cheetahs.” Cheetahs don’t roar. Page 3: “Where we live (in Louisiana) by the Onacheta River, a sound lifts up to the sky around sunset… You might hear an armadillo rustling through the leaves on the ground, a wolf howling, or squirrels running in the trees overhead.” Wolves don’t live by the Onacheta River in Louisiana.
This is a really great book, it’s easy to read and follow. I enjoyed reading their testimonies and even more so the scripture that was included. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter are helpful to tie together what you read to your own life, even if you don’t answer all of them it’s still nice to have to come back to or to ask others.
Just finished this book. It had me crying, smiling, reflecting, meditating etc. such a good book. If you are looking for a good Study for a Woman’s group this already has questions at the end of each chapter.
The Robertson’s are truly Godly women that have shared the good and the bad in their lives. Their testimonies touch me deeply. This book is one you can read over and over again This is a book I will cherish always!
When I first started this book, I was expecting more about sisterhood and community. Instead, this book focuses largely on telling our stories and embracing who God has made us to be, despite our past. It was good book, and I enjoyed learning more about the Robertsons.
Loved this book. Beautiful testimonies, and scripture filled from start to finish. So much about the grace of God, and how loving he is. Couldn’t put it down…
