Mark Himebaugh, the red headed boy with freckles, was abducted 30 years ago from Del Haven, New Jersey. We have not given up the hunt for him. The new book by Detective Rich McHale (Ret.) reveals new information about the abduction of Mark Himebaugh, and he makes an appeal for anyone with additional information to come forward and help us get final closure for Mark’s family.
Mark was a wonderful young man—a good friend, brother and son. He harbored a secret, however. It had festered for years, and was about to boil over, just as Mark’s young life was forever disrupted. That secret is about to come to light, and those involved are about to be exposed. Where Is Mark? is the culmination of 30 years of investigative effort by police, detectives and those on the Himebaugh Task Force, and provides a deep dive into the tortured life of a seemingly typical American boy, who came to be forever known as that kid with red hair and freckles.
On the day that Mark went missing, hundreds of neighbors, police and firefighters volunteered to search the marshes and surrounds for him. For the next several days volunteers were joined by canine units and Coast Guard helicopters, scouring the entire town of Middle Township and beyond, for any sign of young Mark Himebaugh. The only sign of him was a shoe — Mark’s Shoe — left behind on a dry beach only a stone’s throw from his house. What happened to Mark on that cold, windy day in November of 1991? The new book Where Is Mark? traces the details of his last 90 minutes in Del Haven, Middle township, New Jersey.
I’ve been following the story of Mark since the day he went missing. It was an awful time for our small community. So when this book was published I purchased it right away. For me, knowing about Mark’s disappearance and seeing his mother who was in obvious constant pain, I just had to read. I found the story so difficult and distressing. The author shed so much light behind the scenes. I’m my opinion the book was riveting; however I was extremely distressed to the point of tears and nightmares over the final chapters. Perhaps a less graphic ending would have been a better choice. In fiction, it may not have affected me so badly. I still pray…. Where is the justice?!
Being from the Jersey shore area, I was really looking forward to reading this book. While the story is riveting, the writing is dreadful. The lack of editing is evident. Some things were brought up (the bloody blanket in a bag) that the writer failed to explain. My conclusion from this book, is that the case was mishandled by the small town, understaffed, police force, that was in way over their heads. So many people should be in prison, today, but are not, especially Jody Himebaugh and his cohorts. This leads me to believe that some of this narrative is either, incorrect, or made up.
Although I was a small child when this happened, it is an event I will never forget. Having family in Cape May County this story hit too close to home. The summer after Mark’s disappearance my family drove across country with flyers on the window of our minivan in the hopes someone would recognize Mark and call in with a tip. I shudder to think of those flyers being printed by his father in that print shop. Reading this story shed so much light on this tragic event and I hope it yields more information that will lead to answers for the family.
True Crime that takes place down the street from you is unsettling at best but when the community also fails? Terrifying. I couldn’t get past the fact that everyone was aware that the father was molesting the nieces and the mother, aunt, and therapist all told the cops about it and the dad wasn’t arrested ??? That was truly my burning question regarding this book. Why were the police not yanking in Jody.

I was ten when Mark disappeared. I lived in the county but didn't know him. I always think of him from time to time especially around Thanksgiving. This book is definitely a must read. There is a special place in hell for what that "man" did to that boy and his friend. Please read this book and spread the word. Let's find Mark.
For those who lived here and saw the sorrow of this abduction, and hoped and prayed along with the community for closure in this case, this is a must read! Some of it may be hard to read, but the family deserves for the facts to be known and maybe, just maybe more information will come forward from this book being published! We can only hope...for Mark!
A must read for anyone concerned with missing and exploited children.
This book is a very quick read but a concise summary of how a community responded to the Mark Himebaugh mystery. Parts are very graphic and difficult to absorb, but necessary to understand what happens in the dark corners of our world.
Details that are hard to read but harder to think that these the kids that went through this. I hope the right person reads this that can help solve this case.
I feel sick to my stomach after reading that. I remember when this happened, I was still in high school. I pray they find Mark or his remains so his mother has closure. If what I read is true about the father, may he rot in Hell.
