Meg just wants to keep her family together. Her mother is desperately ill and her sister is still in school so it is up to her to support them.   All Meg knows to do is bake and desperation leads her to Ted Lund, the miserly owner of a local bakery. In a moment of uncharacteristic kindness, he takes pity on Meg and offers her a job.   But Ted’s charity ends there. He’ll save money at any costs, cutting corners by using sawdust in his bread, ignoring vermin in his flour, and paying Meg a pittance.  But despite her mistreatment, Meg can see what the bakery might yet be. Using her baking skills, can she turn the shop around?

I really liked all the characters, even Ted Lund as I just felt so sorry for him.
Meg was lovely...I kind of was surprised by the racy gossip.
Sometimes the storytelling was dialectical in quite a subtle way, which meant I had to keep rereading the sentence then realized it was Syntax or a different pattern of speech. I think there must be so many accents in England and the author is so clever to do this especially using old fashioned words or Victorian elements.
Loved that she made Victoria sponge and spoke about the queen.
My second Gracie Hart, my mum loves Diane Allen books, Harts other books.

Curently reading again, year 2025. DUE TO THE BOOK now having a second book in the series.

Really enjoyed this book, it's one of those stories that you can just lose yourself in.
We meet Meg, a young girl who is determined to provide for her family , her mother is dying from cancer, and her younger sister is determined not to attend school. Megs passion is for baking, so when the opportunity to help out at a small back street bakers comes up, she jumps at the chance, but things don't go to plan. The owner will do anything to cut corners, and Meg is determined to turn the shop around, but will she?
This is the first book I have read by Gracie Hart, and it definitely won't be the last.

Slow burn but nice historical fiction read. Poverty stricken Meg accepts a bakers girl position from a curmudgeonly grumpy old man who lost his wife and daughter many years ago. He’s set in his ways and uses sawdust in his bread making. Through his depression and negativity he can’t see that providing healthy bread will bring customers and a profit. Meg changes his bakery while he’s away to a clean, profitable popular bakery with many sidelines of sweet treats. However upon Ted Lunds return, her efforts were not appreciated and Meg realizes that she’s made a mistake in adding to the simple bread lines whilst taking care of her dying mother and wayward sister. However not all is lost and a good ending although very abrupt and some issues seem left to ponder about.

Brilliant book

Gracie is one of the best authors for the olden
days,you can almost feel you are in the streets along with th characters,beautifully written,I've read most of gracie Harts books and every one keeps me enthralled ,captivated,always disappointed to finish the book ,worth the read

Um...it was an easy read and quite entertaining in parts, but I just thought the end felt a bit rushed and I wasn't entirely satisfied with how each character's story was wrapped up...

Just to let everyone know
There is a follow up to this book
A number 2! I didn't know and ended up reading number 3 instead !!
I thought this story is really odd
Make sure you find a number 2 book.
I couldn't go back to that as I already knew what had happened ! Disappointed 😞
