Turning Point is the fourth book in the Nightfall series of post apocalyptic adventure novels by PA veteran Kevin Partner. This series focuses on the individual stories of ordinary people as they struggle to cope with the most deadly event since the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Themes include EMP, preparedness and an examination of the true nature of humanity when the veneer of civilization is suddenly stripped away.
I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.
Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.
Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.
There are so many twists in this startling storyline it would put to shame the most elaborate roller coaster! It kept me up very late and reading as quickly as possible. Then I was sad because it was over until the next installment. I love the characters and their often chaotic lives. I highly recommend this entire series but you definitely need to begin with book one to avoid mass confusion.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest and unsolicited opinion.
Turning Point finds our friends from the last Nightfall book in even deeper danger. Detective Elijah Wade and his companion, Becky, are nearly killed in an ambush on Mr. Gerber's farm.
Sadly, Ruth, Mr. Gerber's wife, is killed and things fall apart at the farm. Elijah and Becky decide to move on towards New York and finding his daughter, Kelly.
Ella and Rae experience a devastating setback when looters burn down their house. Even though the supplies are still accessible in the bunker underneath, they no longer have a home, and Grey in wounded in the battle.
The crew of scientists at the Mauna Loa Observatory draw very near to solving the pattern of the waves of the toxic Auroras when a government agent shows up and disaster strikes.
Things go from bad to catastrophic for all parties involved as the plot literally thickens. Will anyone be able to pull themselves out of the metaphorical mud that threatens to suck them down? It's a good thing that Nightfall: Book 5 is already available.
This is becoming a really good, and fascinating series. There are several different points of view, but his author does a very helpful thing of giving a short 'The Story So Far' before the beginning of the new story, so that we can remember what has happened to each of the different sets of people. During the earlier books I did find some of the people more interesting than others, but I must say that by now, they are all fascinating! There is a wonderful mix of easy-to-understand science, explaining what is happening, and well drawn characters that make you really care what happens to them. I particularly like that the large amount of research that the author has done fits into the story as well as the backstory, so that it is not intrusive, and the story just flows along really easily. It is part of a series and the author would be the first to say that you do need to have read the previous ones first, but I can highly recommend this gripping series!
Turning Point is Book 4 in the Nightfall series by the amazing Kevin Partner.
Main protagonist Elijah Wade's hoping against hope that his daughter's still alive, as he strives to cross over a thousand miles between them. Whole countries have become devastated by the EMP event - and hostile - as society breaks down after loss of technology and rogue citizens, who are determined to survive at any cost riot, loot and rampage, while authorities are powerless to stop them. Astronomer Hannah Redman seeks to predict how the ongoing effects of the EMP's aurora will change humanity for ever...undoubtedly for the worse! We follow Elijah, Hannah and other characters' adventures and the dangers they must face, in a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, right to the very end. This latest episode in the Nightfall series follows all the major story arcs from the three previous stories and further explores the relationships between the various characters. To be honest, I thought I had a truly clear idea as to what direction this series was headed and how things might play out, but Mr. Partner proved to be not as predictable as I had assumed. I’m now hoping book 5 will be released very soon (Hint-Hint) because the story went from action-packed to throwing in an equal amount of unanswered intrigue. I received an advance reader copy from the author and chose to provide this review.
This heats up with an apparent conspiracy in the government, both hiding the original impact and wanting to prevent information getting out about an approaching one. I did not like the slag on the DIA, however. I am also not a fan of the serial killer; I had rather hoped he might have been caught in one of the auroras.
Another great part to this exciting end of the world series! Really well written & good plot - storyline progression, interesting ideas & always something to keep you interested! A great read! I do recommend!
It gets better as the story goes on ( bad guy/good guy thing). I just hope they can warn everyone before the next wave and expose the corrupt politicians. Elijah is the best of the best.
Book four doesn’t disappoint. My eyes were glued and now I’m on my way to book six. If you like post apocalyptic stories, this one grabs you from the first words and doesn’t let go.
