Hope Amid the Pain by Leslie L. McKee is a sixty-day devotional journal dedicated to people suffering from chronic pain or illness. The author uses her personal experience with chronic pain and disease to bring comfort and hope to others who are struggling daily. The devotionals are short but packed full of promises from God’s Word to strengthen, comfort, and encourage you in your daily walk with Him. I have a chronic disease that causes me intermittent pain and a lifetime of infertility struggles, and I found the daily reminders in this book to be of great comfort. I thought the Bible verses chosen were perfect, and I loved daily question/reflection time for each entry. This would be a great resource to connect with God first thing in the morning and begin your day with His hope.

Leslie L. McKee has written the book that anyone who's been surprised by constant pain or illness needs to read. In HOPE Amid the Pain: Hanging On to Positive Expectations When Battling Chronic Pain and Illness, McKee provides 60 daily devotional readings that begin with pertinent Scriptures, talk about particular struggles that chronic pain/illness can bring, then gives hope, truth, and encouragement. It is a fantastic and incredibly useful book, written from a Christian perspective.

Too often, constant pain or illness can sideline a formerly active woman. It can bring hopelessness and despair, in addition to stealing away joy, fellowship, and engagement in a busy life. Friends and family can support that person, but does anyone anywhere understand what it's like to have chronic pain or illness?

Leslie L. McKee does understand. She has suffered from chronic pain and illness for 25 years. And she has learned so much in the process that she shares freely, kindly, and lovingly in this devotional. She understands because she has been there. And, as 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 says: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." Leslie freely shares the truths, the encouragement, and the compassion she's received from God during her years of suffering. It will bless you and truly make a difference for you.

Overview of the devotional

The devotional is geared to those living with chronic illnesses or chronic pain. I have not experienced chronic pain or suffered from a long-term illness. However, I can imagine how hard it would feel for the person and how the thoughts of “why is this happening to me?” or “why is God punishing me?”.

These thoughts often occur to anyone who is going through a difficult time, especially, those that are suffering from actual physical pain. I like that there is a short introduction in the beginning and then the author dives right into the 60-day devotional entries.

Each entry is just a page long and on the back of the page, there are a few lines to reflect on the passage.

Brief Review of a Specific Passage

Day 44 briefly goes over how we should hold onto our faith during this most difficult time. This is a time when we are most vulnerable to stray from God and rely on other means to feel better. I liked that Leslie was simplified the passage and made it easy to understand. It was to the point and she didn’t dabble on. I think this opens the passage to interpretation and allows you to think about how the passage relates to your life.

Is the Devotional Worth It?

At first, I thought that there would only be devotional and no real-world tips on how to deal with chronic pain and illnesses. However, in the back, there are a few appendixes on tips on how to deal with the pain outside of the devotional. I liked that there were meditation tips, how to write a gratitude journal and tips on finding a supportive community.

The only thing I wished she would have included is to let people know that it’s ok to find help therapeutically. Often in Christian environments, it’s not encouraged to seek help and just rely on God. Whenever you are suffering from mental or physical pain I think it’s always ok to seek help and never be ashamed of it. A therapist can help you to navigate the thoughts you have on why you feel God is punishing you or why God is putting you through this experience.

Overall, I think this devotional is a great start to learning how to live with your chronic pain and find hope and happiness again amongst the pain.

Do you have chronic pain or a chronic illness? Or maybe someone close to you shares those struggles. Hope Amid the Pain by Leslie L. McKee is a 60-day devotional journal that is both practical and inspirational.

Hope Amid the Pain has a reading for each of the 60 days that begins with a Bible verse, then has a short, but meaty reading, followed by a brief prayer and then a prompt with space to write following the reading. There is quite a bit of writing space but you could certainly journal in your own empty notebook if you are wanting quite a bit of space.

At the end of the book there are appendixes that offer a lot of good information. Appendix A includes advice for the newly diagnosed that is quite practical and full of wisdom from someone who has been in this place. Appendix B includes tips, helps and hacks for living a better life with the chronic illness. Appendix C includes a lot of good information on gratitude journaling. I thought it was especially helpful that she shares information on gratitude journaling apps. I had no idea they existed, let alone that there were several options. Appendix D includes exercises for deep breathing, which has been shown to help deal with pain and may even lessen it. Leslie then tells her story at the back of the book. There is also an extensive list of online resources that could possibly be helpful to the reader.

All in all, Hope Amid the Pain is a beautiful book that includes both a lot of practical advice but also a lot of inspiration and encouragement for someone dealing with pain and illness of some sort. It would be a nice gift to include in a gift basket of goodies for someone who was newly diagnosed as well as one to purchase for yourself if you need it.

Anyone who is living with chronic pain or illness knows that there are moments, days, weeks that you feel absolutely defeated. It is easy to question why this has happened to you, why life has to be like this and just desperately hopeless. However, as a Christian, this is not a battle that is fought and lived alone. Knowing that Jesus is with you is one thing, remembering this and holding onto that promise is another and can be more difficult.

Leslie L. McKeesport book, "Hope Amid the Pain: hanging on to positive expectations when battling chronic pain and illness," is a 60-day devotional journal that is an excellent resource and help. Each day features a verse from the Bible and then a reading to go along with it. Also there are several lines for the reader to journal her own thoughts and reflections.

I love that the readings are short and specific in focus for each day as it doesn't feel overwhelming or time consuming.  However, it is a verse and reading that will leave you thinking about it for the day (or longer) and away to start out each day with a positive mindset. Also, it is a quick read before bed to help calm any anxiety one may feel as well.

I don’t suffer from chronic pain so I wasn’t sure I was a good fit for the book but the title “Hope Amid the Pain” spoke to me. I found this devotional book very relatable despite the fact our circumstances are not the same. I have experienced an emotional pain not physical. Anyone experiencing a “Why is this happening, God?” experience will find the 60 daily devotions relatable as well inspiring. Each daily entry begins with a scripture and ends with a warm-hearted prayer.

What I think my favorite part of the book is that the author recognizes the healing that journaling can bring emotionally, so there are thoughtful journal prompts provided after each entry. The author also provided a space right after the question for you to pause, reflect and jot down your though.

Let me start by saying I am blessed to not have chronic pain. But I know a couple someone who do deal with it, and as Leslie L. McKee states in Hope Amid the Pain, those of us who can only see the outside of a person sometimes never know what’s going on inside their bodies or their minds.

In this 60-day devotional, McKee shares her own struggles in her journey with chronic pain while encouraging others to HOPE (Hang On to Positive Expectations) through it all. It’s a book that will uplift and encourage women struggling with chronic pain and illness and open the eyes and hearts of those in their lives who maybe just don’t understand.

The paperback offers plenty of room to journal your thoughts and prayers, and if you’re reading the e-book, you’re going to want to keep a notebook or journal close by. The scripture passages went well with each of the short (less than five minutes of reading) devotionals. If you deal with chronic pain or have someone in your life who does, this book will assure you/them that you/they are not alone.

HOPE AMID THE PAIN by Leslie L. McKee

I have really enjoyed the Introduction to this book. It made me think of my own pains and those I love. Make sure to read My Story. It was interesting as the author tells us her story. This 60 day devotional journal aims to aid in having a positive mindset, hope and comfort despite all the pain. Each day starts with a bible verse, topic of the day, a short prayer and an ample space to write a personal reflection. The reflection part has daily questions that can help in the thinking process. The appendices were nice.

This is a good devotional to read. It’s short and enlightening. It can be done in a few minutes daily. It’s meant for those with a physical or mental chronic illness, but I think it is still applicable to most people. All of us experience a certain issue or concern. It’s relatable.

It also leads the reader to keep on trusting God in all the pain. This is also a good gift to someone who needs some encouragement.

Thank you Ambassador International for the complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

When I worked as a nurse, it was hard to see my patients in pain, and I did everything I could to relieve it. But what if the pain becomes chronic? What if you’re the one hurting? Leslie McKee knows that situation all too well and understands the importance of HOPE (Hanging On to Positive Expectations).

Though the nurse in me would have liked more specifics on her particular chronic illness, Leslie kept the details a little vague. Instead, she focused on God’s sustaining hand throughout these sixty devotions to help readers experiencing diverse types of chronic pain. Anyone who has had to sit on the sidelines of life or be told they just need to buck up because their chronic illness is “invisible” to others will find comfort and hope in this book.

Whether it's for yourself or a loved one, we can probably all think of someone after reading just the title of this book. For me, the person who instantly came to my mind is my Aunt, who has been in and out of the hospital more times than I can count in the past twelve years or so, dealing with autoimmune disease that has robbed her of her health and stacked mounting diagnoses to her already overwhelming plate of medical issues. Yet despite all she's gone through and how difficult life is for her, she's still the strongest person I know. It's devastating to see someone you love so much battling with such intense pain and illness. So needless to say, reading through these devotions I couldn't help but think of her and the hope and peace I'd love to speak into her. So not only did I purchase a copy for myself, I purchased one for her, and my hope is that it can be a real blessing to her. The thing is, the false teachings of "health and wealth" sound great, but are not Biblical. Yet in a world where "thinking positive" is considered the ultimate healing tool and that if people just "believe" they can be healed,  there's a whole lot of already discouraged people who then find themselves wrestling over their own eternal security because the miraculous healing they hope for simply doesn't happen. This devotional journal is SOOO needed as a biblical encouragement to those who suffer from chronic pain and illness. It not only maintains an eternal perspective, but provides tools for "living your best life" despite the limitations that pain and illness have thrown on you. God can use you no matter where you are at. You don't have to be healed and able to run a marathon in order for the light of the God to shine in and through you. God loves and values you regardless of your physical conditions and limitations. This book is such a hug for people who desperately need it. If you or someone you love deals with chronic pain and illness, I absolutely couldn't recommend this one enough!

HOPE Amid the Pain: Hanging On to Positive Expectations When Battling Chronic Pain and Illness by Leslie L. McKee is the latest book I have had the pleasure of reading. Leslie L. McKee is a "new to me author". The Title really intrigued me!

Chronic Illness is unfortunately all too familiar to so many in today's society, especially amongst Women. Christian women are not exempt from Chronic Illness. Many times those who suffer from Chronic Illness wondering if God is punishing them and cannot understand why they suffer so greatly. Those who suffer from Chronic Illness also feel that they have no purpose in life. How can Women with Chronic Illness find their Purpose or HOPE in this world?

WOW, just WOW! I have recently been diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, Major Anxiety and Type 2 Diabetes. I have my "low days" when I have to take a "Recliner Day" and just rest. I often feel like I am not accomplishing my daily tasks and tending to my Husband and 3 Teenage boys properly. This 60 day Devotional has given me HOPE and Encouragement that God is doing a good work and he has a plan for me, throughout the Illness and all. I really appreciate Leslie sharing her 25yr journey through Chronic Illness. I really like the layout and format of this Devotional. Each Devotional has a Scripture Passage, a Devotional to read that corresponds to the Scripture, a prayer and a reflection. I HIGHLY recommend this Devotional to anyone who struggles with finding Encouragement through their Chronic Illness! VERY Encouraging BOOK!

From the moment I picked up Hope Amid the Pain I knew I had found something special. A few paragraphs in I was already tearing up, the thoughts and feelings that I have struggled with for so long staring back at me, a literary voice whispering in black and white, “I see you! I understand! You are not alone.”.

I have felt detached for so long and for the first time in a very long time I am feeling a connection, a thread of hope. I know there are many others who struggle with pain like I do, some better, some worse, but one thing we all have in common is the utter helplessness and isolation, and the fear that you’ve lost the essence of who you really are.

I have struggled with an autoimmune disease since I was five years old, and have continued to be diagnosed with three more since then. I also have three different types of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and have cysts all over my brain and all along my spine on my neck, causing tremendous pain. Like most people I have my good days and I have my bad days, and my bad days are bleak. I am only 40 years old! I shouldn’t be going through this! Why is this happening to me? Who am I anymore?

Hopelessness is a feeling I wallow in more than I care to admit, but reading Hope Amid the Pain has shown me that “you can hold onto hope because you know Jesus.”

God does have a purpose and a plan for each and every one of us. He loves us and we are never truly alone. This devotion is a great reminder of that fact. It shifts the focus off what I am going through, and puts my eyes where they belong: on the never-changing Jesus.

Each day there is a verse to focus on, a quick prayer, as well as a place for your own personal reflection. Each days entry is short, yet packs a powerful punch, leaving you pondering those words, and their application, much later after they were read.

Hope Amid the Pain is a treasure, and one devotional that truly speaks to my heart. It can benefit all who use it, but for those of us that deal with chronic pain it is a salve to a wound that might not heal on this earth, but gives hope that one day healing will come.

Leslie McKee's gently encouraging devotional, Hope Amid the Pain: Hanging On to Positive Expectations When Battling Chronic Pain and Illness, is a book I will read and re-read. Each short devotion weaves story and scripture together and concludes with a reflection question. Space is provided to journal a response.

Ms. McKee addresses such struggles as feeling "less than", taking fear and worry to the foot of the cross, and learning to grow through suffering.

If you or someone you know deals with chronic pain and illness, I highly recommend this book.

Favorite quote: "People dealing with chronic pain and illness already have a limited energy supply. Don’t waste that energy on lies. Use your energy to build up your faith."

HOPE Amid the Pain should be prescribed to anyone suffering with a health condition. It is the kind of book that makes you want to holler out “AMEN!” after each day’s devotion. Unexpected health concerns sweep the rug right out from under the patient and their families. They need compassion and understanding, and Leslie L. McKee provides that. She also shares her own experiences, adding validity to the daily encouragement. HOPE Amid the Pain reminds the reader they are not alone, and most of all, there is hope that God will use the time of suffering for His glory.

I Honestly know SO many people that this book would benefit! I myself have experienced pain, and while this book doesn't make it go away, it did give me a new way of looking at it.

Leslie L. McKee has such a wonderful way with words. And I loved the 60 days of devotions (I have 7 more days until I am completely finished). It has been a refreshing journey for me and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to read this book.

Overall, I think this book is very effective, written in a helpful manner, and one that truly does give you HOPE Amid the Pain.

Hope Amid the Pain is a must-have devotional for individuals living with chronic pain and illness. There are 60 devotionals that begin with a Bible verse. Next, Leslie shares an anecdote and lesson before ending with a short prayer. At the end of each devotion, there is a question prompt and space to reflect.

One of the best things about this devotional journal is that you can repeat it, gaining insights the second and even third time you didn't in your first study. It's a tool to spend time reflecting on your circumstances framed by biblical truth AND also the strength and grace God provides. Naturally, He can speak to your heart and life situations through your work here in this journal because you are taking time to learn from Him as shared by the author.

Additionally, Leslie has included many appendices at the end of the book including her own story, advice for newly diagnosed individuals, tips for those living with chronic pain and illness, a how-to for creating and using a gratitude journal, a list of resources that can be beneficial for a wide-range of people, and a list of all the scriptures used throughout the devotional.

Overall, this is MUST have in one's chronic illness warrior toolbox! It also may provide insight for family members of those battling chronic pain and illness. I plan to gift this book to a few individuals this Christmas season.

Hope Amid the Pain is a book that far too many of us can benefit from. (Now that’s an unusual way to start a review, isn’t it?) But in this case, it’s fitting. It’s a shame that chronic illnesses and pain touch so many of us. Since a back operation with complications in 2016, I’ve lived with chronic pain. So, I feel like I know a little bit about WISHING this book wouldn’t find a place in today’s world and KNOWING there is a very important place for it.

For those of us who do suffer, McKee has created a devotional that is perfect for starting each day. The book is broken into 60-day helps. The front of the page is a short story or thought, and on the back, there are a few blank lines to write your response to a daily question.

Does it make the pain go away? Certainly not. But, meanwhile, we have the opportunity to experience a short devotional that can start each day with hope and a positive attitude. And we all know how helpful that can be to our health and attitude

Do you have struggles with chronic pain or illness? What do you do to remain positive?

This 60-day devotional journal would make a nice gift for someone needing encouragement.

As a reader with chronic illness, I am always on the lookout for books to encourage or help me in my journey. When I came across Hope Amid the Pain, the title struck me as a book that is a must read. I am so glad I got it.
Leslie McKee understands chronic pain and chronic illness, she herself struggles. These 60 devotionals are spot on. I loved the scriptures she chose and her devotionals spoke to me. Each entry has a scripture passage, a devotional that helps the reader apply the verse, a prayer and a reflection making this the perfect book to start or end your day. I don’t think it matters what your chronic illness is, Leslie McKee’s words will speak to your heart.
The appendices are also useful - Advice for the Newly Diagnosed, Tips and Hacks, Gratitude Journaling, and Deep Breathing. McKee also includes resources for a variety of chronic illnesses. I highly recommend Hope Amid the Pain to anyone who has a chronic illness - it could also be a great gift.

4.5 stars. I am so glad books like this exist — written by a believer in Christ, by a person with chronic illness/pain. I can only imagine the toll & sacrifice it took to write the book and I appreciate that so much.

The book consists of 60 short devotionals, each with a Bible verse, short prayer, and reflective question with lots of room to write. But what I liked the most were the appendixes. I found them very practical and helpful. Don’t skip them!

The only reason I took off 1/2 a star is because the author tends to write a fair bit about her tendency to try to do a lot, be a perfectionist, be a controller, etc. I found this topic to be separate from the topic of the book, and could’ve been in a different themed book instead.

I know it is hard to find books like this written for men, so if you are looking for such, I didn’t find this one particularly geared toward women. Also, there was nothing in there about being a mom. I really appreciated that, as for a lot of us women, chronic illness/pain has ruled out that option.

With an understanding heart born of years of her own experience fighting chronic pain, Leslie L. McKee encourages readers with sixty beautiful, biblical devotions that will inspire, encourage, and help those of us suffering with illness to glimpse an eternal perspective and hope not of this world. Saturated in truth, HOPE Amid the Pain helps readers silence the lies of fear and doubt by practicing gratitude and reminding themselves of their true identity in Christ. I highly recommend this devotional for anyone who has felt the frustration of chronic pain.

I'm always on the lookout for a good devotional, and I found one here. Even though I don't battle chronic pain, I do have one of the "invisible illnesses": anxiety, depression, probably ADHD. A lot of what McKee has to say about being enough in spite of these things resonated with me.

In addition to the 60 readings complete with space for reflection, McKee includes helpful appendices about being diagnosed with chronic pain/illness, breathing exercises, helpful hacks, and how to make a gratitude journal.

Well written and uplifting, this has been a great way to start my day.
